// from the Editor

Deborah Hood, PhD Editor-In-Chief I remember the first time I heard about STAND...it was a Facebook post by Sharon Wright (STAND’s original creator) introducing the magazine. It was to be a “lookbook designed for the contemporary doll collector”--an art book that celebrated not only incredible artistry in dollmaking, but also the artistry captured through the lens of a camera. As an avid doll collector and a subscriber to any and all doll magazines that were out there, I was sold from the very beginning. I bought each and every issue and carefully poured through each page, mesmerized by the art in front of me. I had never seen anything like it in my life! As a photographer, I had begun to experiment with taking photos of my collection, but they were nothing like what I saw in the pages of STAND. This magazine literally opened up an entire new world to me. I looked forward to every issue and through the magazine I drew inspiration to work on my own photographic skills. Eventually, to my delight, I became a contributing photographer to the magazine.

Sharon sold the magazine to the marvelous Dorothy Drake back in the Summer of 2017 with Issue 9. I continued to contribute my work each issue and thoroughly enjoyed seeing the magazine evolve under Dorothy’s leadership. In the Fall of 2018, Dorothy asked me if I would be interested in being her co-editor, and without hesitation I said, “absolutely!”. Working with Dorothy since Issue 21, I have had the chance to not only learn about the mechanics of putting a magazine together, but also to get to know Dorothy as a consummate professional and good friend. Fast forward to today....with Issue 30, I find myself the new owner of this incredible publication after Dorothy offered me the opportunity to purchase STAND. Seeing the magazine through her “lens”, learning about the business of publishing, and just chatting about dolls has been something I will be forever grateful to her for. I thank Dorothy for growing STAND to where it is today and trusting me with the incredible opportunity to be the new steward of this magazine I have loved since its inception. So what’s ahead? I endeavor to carry on the legacies started by Sharon and Dorothy in keeping this magazine a premiere art book for contemporary doll collectors. My goal is to celebrate doll artistry with stunning photography that tells you a story and makes you believe, even if just for a moment, that the dolls pictured are real and the scenes captured are a look into their magical lives. Personally, I am ecstatic for the road ahead and am committed to bring you a publication that “STANDs” out in the industry (pun intended!) For Issue 30, I was trying to think of a theme that fit the timing of the magazine launching in early September....then I remembered then infamous September issue put out by Vogue each year....and thought, what better theme for the September issue than “The September Issue”! Thus came the challenge for photographers to capture their interpretations of cutting-edge fashion, art and culture through the lens of their cameras...and boy, did they step up to the challenge! I thank our contributors for their stunning images which will be sure to wow you as you read this issue. And a special thanks to Liane Laughlin for her gorgeous Sybarite photos that fit the theme perfectly. I hope you enjoy this issue and the impressive work done by our photographers. As it was in the beginning, I continue to be inspired by their incredible artistry. doll: Kabuki by Danny Choo photographer: Deborah Hood
