WRONG PLAY

B

ackstabbing murder, secret affairs, twist endings, and some unintentional demolition were only a few of the special treats I was lucky enough to experience at Ben Lomond High School’s theatrical production of “The Play That Goes Wrong.” Students – both stage crew and cast alike – came together to portray a show within a show that, despite all odds, went perfectly right!

“The Play That Goes Wrong” starts like any other theater production: someone dead, possibly murdered, and everyone else in disarray after the quote-unquote unexpected murder. Not only did the cast portray this scenario perfectly, but this also when we started to get the first glimpses into the disarray that eventually sidetracks the entire show. I couldn’t help but laugh during each glimpse that helped to showcase a multitude of talents of those both “dead” and alive.

As the show continued, so did the mystery of who or who wasn’t a murder. Even in times of supposed seriousness, like a maid suddenly realizing who the true killer is, the humor and chaos continued. Students ran across the stage suddenly posing as coat racks, forgot the character they were playing, and even engaged in a few stage brawls during what was supposed to be a dubious murder.

All in all, what stuck with me the most was the way that students came together to put on a show that they knew was supposed to come crashing down in the end – quite literally, as the walls of the set come crashing down in an unexpected twist ending. The hard work and dedication put into this show is obvious, and I left the show with not only an ache in my side from laughing so much, but feeling very impressed by Ben Lomond’s Theater Department!

SCHOOL BLOOD DRIVE COLLECTS 33 UNITS

he numbers are in from the recent blood drive at Ben Lomond High School, and the results are clear: Our students give life!

cording to Mr. Fox. “It missed taking the record (34 units in 2016) by only two units. I bet BLHS HOSA could set a record at the next blood drive.”

“We use the ‘scholarship’ money to help students attend state competition in the spring and have an end-of-year party,” Ms. Gonzalez said.

The blood drive, organized by the school’s HOSA students, was held Nov. 13 in the gym.

Those 33 units of blood — along with several other performance bonuses awarded — qualifies the school’s HOSA organization for a $530 scholarship.

But the best part, according to Mr. Fox, was that the blood was “being processed into as many as 99 separate blood products for patients at the Huntsman Cancer Institute and the University of Utah hospitals,” adding that the “time, efforts, and donations will be helping to save lives” in the near future.

Rob Fox, community relations for ARUP Blood Services, said his organization registered 40 donors and collected 33 units of blood in all.

espite the challenges that faced the school in Term 1, Ben Lomond ended up with 23 students recording perfect attendance during the first quarter.

“With the challenges we had first quarter, this is a pretty good accomplishment,” said Principal Velden Wardle.

he arts department at Ben Lomond High School is set to present an enchanting performance of “A Christmas Carol.”

This festive evening will be held on Dec. 11 at the school. It will feature a variety of artistic talents from across the school. Enjoy captivating dance routines performed by the

drill and dance company, moving dramatic readings provided by the theatre department, and beautiful, handcrafted backgrounds created by art students. The entire production will be brought to life with the stirring sounds and music of our school orchestra.

The event will take place starting

at 7 p.m., promising an unforgettable experience filled with holiday spirit, creativity, and community.

Whether you come to support your friends or simply to enjoy a magical night out, this show is sure to captivate audiences of all ages.

HOLIDAY TRADITIONS STUDENT SEASONAL CUSTOMS VARY

M

any families have traditions that have been passed down through generations. Around the world, many cultures have traditions that are new, old, and everything in between. Many cultures have traditions that are centered around different holidays. Bigger holidays, like Christmas, have many different traditions.

Students at Ben Lomond have different traditions and cultural backgrounds. Matix Souvannasap said that his family celebrates Christmas by gathering and having parties. He spends Christmas Eve with his dad’s side with his entire family, then on Christmas he goes to his grandma’s house on his mom’s side. Then dinner follows and they open gifts.

By Brooklyn Richey, BL Spirit Staff Abigail Ha’o says that her family does a lot leading up to Christmas.

They do the 12 days of Christmas, but the Hawaiian version. It includes two missionaries, three Kauailber, 5 big fat eggs, hula lessons, dancers, koi fish, and more.

They also read Christmas scriptures in Hawaiian every year leading up to Christmas, and she says they basically have them memorized now.

Some other traditions students observe involve getting things ready for Christmas. Ty Stuart and his family get Christmas trees on Black Friday.

Additionally, they eat a big dinner on Christmas Eve. They also open presents and go to their grandparents’ house.

Kaitlyn Maquin not only celebrates Christmas in December, but in her family there are a lot of birthdays, so they celebrate those in December as well. They gather, and no matter how far they are, they go celebrate.

They have food, catch up, and celebrate.

For Christmas, Kaitlyn’s family celebrates by having a big feast. Her favorite tradition surrounding Christmas is … just Christmas!

While these students have some different traditions, there are some similarities among students.

Christmas is a time of year many spend with their family, which is a great way to spend the winter break.

he ninth annual Fruit and Vegetable Contest was recently held at Ben Lomond High School.

FCCLA SELLING SOCKS TO PROVIDE CLEAN WATER IN AFRICA

America, is selling socks in order to fund water wells and filtration systems for villages in Rwanda, Africa.

The teachers bought a “huge box” of the socks for potential donors to see up close and personal. his month on Hot Takes, we interviewed 40 people on their winter preferences.

Pumpkin spice is a common fall flavor that many people love. It’s the same with peppermint! So which one do students like better?

Throughout all the interviews, the results stayed pretty even, but one came out over the other. Peppermint was the decided favorite with 52.5% of students preferring it, while 47.5% of students picked pumpkin spice as their favorite.

WHICH IS YOUR FAVORITE: HOT CHOCOLATE, APPLE CIDER, COFFEE, OR ENERGY DRINKS?

During the coldest months of the year, hot chocolate and hot apple cider make a comeback as popular drinks to warm up. However, coffee and energy drinks are popular year-round beverages that many students drink. So, what is a fan favorite during cold months? Hot chocolate was the overwhelming winner, with 52.5% of students picking it as their favorite. Next, energy drinks came in with 20% of students picking that as their favorite; then apple cider with 15% of students. Finally, coffee came in last with 12.5% of students choosing it.

With the cold, some fun and popular holidays come! If forced to choose, which day would students rather work on? The majority of students would rather work on New Year’s, with 70% of students choosing this option. 25% of students chose Christmas, and 5% of students picked neither.

Kaitlyn Maquin chose neither and said that, “My family and I are all really closeknit, so we spend the holidays together.”

Edwin Huerta had a strong opinion about this and also chose neither, saying, “I’d rather put in my two weeks’ (notice) before I work either of those holidays.”

Finding the right gift doesn’t need to be stressful. With a little thought and creativity, you can pick something special for everyone on your list.

How do you choose the perfect gift? Start by thinking about the recipient – their hobbies, interests, and what makes them smile. Ask yourself, “What would they find useful, fun, or memorable?” The best gifts are often personal and thoughtful, and they can even be handmade.

We interviewed a cross-section of Ben Lomond High School students, and here were their top gift ideas, by personal interests.

For sports lovers: Consider warm beanies, insulated water bottles, gloves, or maybe even ice rink tickets for a memorable experience.

Consider giving experiences over things. Sometimes, an experience like a trip to the movies, tickets, or a fun outing can mean more than a physical item.

ed Ribbon Week was held the last week in October at Ben Lomond. The week is designed to celebrate and spread the news about being drug free. Throughout the week there were many activities to take part in to spread that awareness.

On Monday, students were invited to dress as their favorite teacher.

The idea was to impress a favorite teacher by being drug-free. Since teachers are drug-free, students were asked to impress teachers by being drug-free.

On Tuesday, students wore den-

Wednesday was jersey day, to team up against drugs. Students wore jerseys in the same way sports teams wear jerseys – to show they are a team.

Thursday was Plaid and Proud to Be Drug-free Flannel Day. On this day everyone wore flannel clothing to show their “Plaid and Proud” promise to be drug free.

Finally, on Friday students were encouraged to scare the drugs away by wearing Halloween costumes. That day was Halloween, so students, teachers and staff wore their costumes to represent drugs away from ourselves. There were also student body officers walking around as the Grim Reaper, marking students that would represent them being people who died in some way involving drugs.

When marked, “victims” got a piece of paper that said how they died. They were not allowed to talk to anyone else – unless they were also marked as a dead person or they were a teacher.

MARSHALL WHITE URBAN STUDENT ALLIANCE TOURS NEW CENTER

O

n Oct. 30, the school’s Urban Student Alliance club went to the new Marshall White Center for a full tour.

The group was shown all the different equipment and rooms in the facility, including the pool and the dedicated room for parties. Center employees

explained how at first there wasn’t going to be a new Marshall White Center, but after some discussions it was agreed that the center was needed and it would be better to rebuild.

The group was treated to an explanation of the history of the center, including how it was named after

an African-American Ogden Police Department officer killed in the line of duty back in 1963.

As it turns out, most employees at the Marshall White Center are returning staff members who worked at the old center and have connections to the building.

DEBATE LIFE A DAY IN THE LIFE OF SPEECH AND DEBATE STUDENTS

magine if you were required to wake up ridiculously early on a Saturday morning. Your alarm goes off before the sun has considered rising. You roll over in bed, longing to go back to sleep while anxiety and anticipation begin taking up space in your waking thoughts. A fleeting moment passes through your mind where you consider going back to sleep, only to have that thought pushed aside with the reminder from the debate coach lighting up your phone.

As early as it is, you can’t help but smile as you walk onto the bus and greet everyone else. You have a bit of a bus ride, but you know – at the end of the day – it’ll all be worth it.

This is the life of a Speech and Debate kid, and it’s pretty similar to how life transpired for 13 of Ben Lomond’s very own. On Saturday, November 15th (at 6:45 a.m.!), the Ben Lomond High School Speech and Debate team met for its third tournament of the season, hosted by Ridgeline High School in Cache Valley. An hour bus ride there gave the students plenty of time to prepare and work through their anxieties.

Anna Bune, a junior varsity debate student and Lincoln-Douglas competitor, said that in order to prepare for the tournament, “I picked off all my nail polish. It was chipped and I wanted my nails to look professional.” She expressed her anxiety, and the bus ride helped her calm down.

Noah Bersamin, one member of the Public Forum debate team, said he “slept on the bus ride so I wouldn’t have to overthink.”

The Speech and Debate team arrived at Ridgeline High School at 8:00 am.

The sun was barely over the mountain range as they excitedly exited the bus. Students claimed a spot together

in the school’s cafeteria, and began preparing for their rounds. Chromebooks came out of backpacks, phones logged into the online platform, and the team waited for their first-round assignments to arrive on their devices.

After the first round, Giovanni Hernandez, who competed in Original Oratory Speech, said he “felt more confident about my speech. I know how to make it better each time.” He joined the Speech & Debate team to “push myself to do something I’ve never done, to get out of my comfort zone, and to express my creativity. I know I can always improve on my speaking skills.”

Isidro Gutierrez Pacheco, who competed in Impromptu Speaking, said he felt “more confident each round, like I can do better, even if I don’t know the topics right away. I like impromptu speaking because you just get up there and yap.” He finished his statement with, “Michael and Gio are warriors!”

Michael Cortright competed in Original Oratory Speaking. Asked why he joined Speech and Debate, he said, “I want to be a lawyer, and this prepares me. I can get better at speaking in public.”

At the end of four long rounds and

many hours of competing, Ben Lomond experienced a win. Jaxton Watkins and Noah Bersamin, the school’s Novice Public Forum team, won first place in their event. Following that success, the Speech and Debate team took group photos, climbed onto the bus, and arrived home later that afternoon.

As with any clan, activity, or sports team, there is a lot of work put in by the students on the Speech and Debate team. They are strong competitors, incredible researchers, and excellent competitors.

Such is the life of a debate team, and dare we say, that is not debatable.

STUDENT BAKERS CROWNED IN CAKES, CUPCAKES COMPETITION

he Great British Bake Off” has nothing on Ben Lomond High School’s Family and Consumer Sciences Department.

In November, FCS classes held not one but two baking contests. Students competed for bragging rights in the school’s kitchens.

On Monday, Nov. 10, all eight classes in the FCS Baking and Pastry Class held their “Cupcake Wars.” Students competed against each other in a contest to bake and decorate the most delicious and best-presented cupcakes. Winners in the competition were Kitchen #8, featuring student bakers Taijanai Staley, Ricardo Escobedo Jr., and Martha Cruz. The students won with a two-tone frosting and extremely moist cupcake.

Judge for the Cupcake Wars contest was SRO Reed Mackley, who, according to FCS teacher Rebecca LeDuc, “survived eating eight sugary, delicious cupcakes.”

Then, on Nov. 24, the FCS Baking and Pastry kitchens competed in a Cake Decorating contest. The week before, each kitchen designed and baked a two-tier cake, complete with the filling of their choice.

The cakes were frozen over the weekend, and then after thawing them student teams assembled and executed their designs on the cake.

Cakes were judged on the technical skill of piping, use of different toppings, and overall presentation.

First-place winners were Bernice Cervantes and Ramon Saavedra (Kitchen #7), second place went to Aaliyah Beausoleil, Jeny Vargas, and Allyson Trujillo Pascasio.

Judges for the cake competition were assistant principals Ben Hamblin and Jeff Martinez, and FCS teacher Makenzie Thompson.

SARAH SPINELLI HERITAGE ESSAY BL CHEERLEADER NAMED ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

en Lomond’s own Sarah Spinelli was named the UHSAA Athlete of the Week for the week of Nov. 2-8.

A senior, Sarah has been a dedicated member of the Ben Lomond High School Cheer team for the past four years. Those around her say this cheer captain leads with “kindness, compassion, and a strong sense of community.”

Sarah has been an inspiration to the entire team. Despite injuries, she continues to persevere with both determination and self-awareness. Sarah maintains a 3.9 GPA, all while balancing school (including college courses), work and family.

“THE CHANGE IN A GENERATION”

I

n this world the generation of these times find a struggle when it comes to stepping up to lead for the next generations. Latinos in Action is the foundation of growth not just to the Latino culture, but to the cultures of this world. Latinos in Action inspires all the youth that aspire to be a leader. Even when this generation doesn’t have the motivation, LIA sparks a motivation of growth inside them. This year’s theme is “You belong.” It’s not just so people hear it, but it sparks a motivation in the generation of the world to step up and lead by example. Hearing “You belong” means no matter where you come from, no matter your culture, you are the future of this world and it’s time for you to know that. That is what LIA stands for, so believe it.

Ben Lomond High School is the home of the Fighting Scots. This school isn’t perfect, but yet again, is any? Ben Lomond is full of students that come from many different cultures, and that’s what makes us different from any other high school. Latinos in Action has become a big part in the Ben Lomond community recently. Latinos in Action has become an example to the students on how to be leaders. In recent years Latinos in Action has been sparking people’s

motivation up at Ben Lomond to step up. But Latinos in Action has picked up such an important role to BL because we have shown that it doesn’t matter what culture you come from, you can still make things happen within your community. LIA isn’t just important because of that, but also because we serve the community around us as Ben Lomond. Latinos in Action shows the leadership potential of Ben Lomond which shows the importance of LIA, especially to the students that come from all these cultures. Latinos in Action isn’t just a clan at Ben Lomond but a representation of leadership here at BL. Latinos in action can be important to many people, no matter what culture they come from. Personally Latinos

in Action has shown me many things that have developed me as a person today. The reason why Latinos in Action is important to me is because LIA is the reason why I became a leader. Latinos in Action has shown me that I can become a leader; I’ve never believed in myself, especially when it came to being a role model for others. Now I have become the LIA president and one of the student body officers at my school. If it wasn’t for Latinos in Action, I wouldn’t have become the leader that I am today.

In the end, Latinos in Action has become the reason why I have grown as a person and as a leader. I am thankful for all the opportunities Latinos in Action has given me; which is the reason why Latinos in Action is of great importance to me.

TEAM HAS A RUNAWAY SUCCESSFUL YEAR

I

t’s been a great year for cross country at Ben Lomond High School.

This year’s Royal Run at Roy High School featured 24 teams, and Ben Lomond was the Top 3A finisher.

Not only did the team beat rival Ogden High, it had a runner finish in the Top 15.

This doesn’t even mention how well the team did at the state competition this year – again beating Ogden High and placing a finisher in the Top 10 who was named All-State.

Observers agree that this is the one of the best performances Ben Lomond cross country has put together in the last 20 years. The BL squad scored 26 | Ben Lomond Spirit Magazine

fewer points this year (low scores win) than it has in the last 25-plus years.

“Everyone had the race that they needed, but I’d probably single out our fifth man, Seamus Butler, for having a step-up performance,” said Coach Bret Ferrier. “He usually finished behind the 7th man of Ogden, but stepped up and was able to run with their back pack of guys 4-7 and beat their 4th place – which ended up putting us soundly ahead of them.”

Ben Lomond’s top runner, Daniel Budge, also ran smart and was able to take third overall, which tied the highest that someone from the school has done in the past couple of decades. Budge is also the team captain and has led the team all year.

The girls cross country team also did well, particularly considering that there are only two girls – both of whom made it to State this year.

Liege Ferrier, a freshman, ran 24:23 and placed 68th, and Makayla Johnson, a senior, ran 24:55 and placed 73rd.

“Both of them had excellent races, beating kids they were behind earlier in the season,” according to Coach Ferrier. Both showed great improvement, and the coach was quite proud of them.

All students are invited to join the cross country teams.

“We want you. Come on out,” Coach Ferrier said.

overnment shutdowns have a strange way of being both distant and deeply personal at the same time. For many people, it’s just something scrolling across the bottom of a news screen. For others, it hits the dinner table, the bills, the job, and the stress levels in very real ways. The recent shutdown was no exception, and the voices of people who lived through it show just how uneven and unpredictable its impact can be.

On one hand, some people hardly felt it.

“It didn’t personally affect me or anyone around me,” said Max Doss, who also expressed his frustration at the political gridlock. “I think

it’s disappointing how they aren’t able to compromise. … It’s terrible it took this long for them to come to a conclusion.”

able to buy anything, and my stepmom had to get two jobs, so we were really stressed out about it,” Rosalie said.

Even though he himself wasn’t directly harmed, Max still recognized the human cost, noting, “It’s sad to see how it affects so many lives when the whole government gets shut down.”

When paychecks stopped, the household had to turn to some help: “We had to get food and such from the bishop’s storehouse.”

But for others, a shutdown doesn’t feel like a distant argument; it feels like survival being put on pause.

Rosalie Johnson explained how deeply it disrupted her family.

“My dad works for the IRS, and we were really worried about not being

And it wasn’t just families relying on paychecks from government jobs; the shutdown trickled into unexpected places. Riley Kingsley pointed out how government support for food and insurance interruptions hit many families hard.

“No, my dad didn’t get paid during the government shutdown,” Rosalie said. “We did have to budget and whatnot, … it didn’t affect us too badly physically, rather mentally.”

“Getting food and stuff was hard to get during the shutdown; government insurance impacted a lot of families,” Riley said, noting that neither political side was blameless: “Trump shouldn’t blame all the politics for what they both did in both parts; they both had wrongs and rights.”

“Other than my mom, it didn’t affect me that much,” he said, but the worry was still real.

Shutdowns also tend to expose a simple truth. One size never fits all. Some people move through it untouched, while others feel the weight of every suspended paycheck, delayed food benefit, grounded flight, or canceled service. And while the political world tends to frame shutdowns as a strategy or leverage, everyday people are just trying to get through the week.

If these voices have one thing in common, it’s this: Not a single person was happy the government shut down, even if some felt it from

This seed plants itself in all the crevices of the heart, and the extent of what that seed can become, the heart never forgets.

This is your School Resource Officer (SRO) Reed Mackley and Police Service Dog (PSD) Piper.

We wanted you all to get to know us a little better. I’ve been a police officer for 24 years. Yes, that means I’m old.

Most of my career has been spent as a robbery/homicide detective for the Ogden Police Department. I’ve also enjoyed opportunities such as Patrol, SWAT, Motors (motorcycles), Community Policing, and Narcotics. Believe it or not, a long time ago I had long hair, earrings, and a big bushy beard. My job was to buy drugs from people. It was a lot of fun.

has been being an SRO at Ben Lomond High School. I get to make fun of kids all day, and that brings me a lot of joy. Seriously … a lot.

I also really like getting to know many of you personally. You all have such amazing stories. I’m constantly impressed by many of our students and how tough and determined they are. One thing I hope to accomplish at BL is to get kids to see that cops are just people like they are, and hopefully they’ll believe that not all cops are jerks – even if they wrote you a ticket.

Piper is a bit younger than me. She’s 3.5 years old and has been a police service dog for 1.5 years. I named her Piper after our amazing Bagpipers!

dous nose to sniff for things that don’t belong at school and help make the campus unsafe. Piper and I also visit other schools in the district, and she does the same thing at those schools.

Piper is usually friendly and loves to be petted. Just don’t try and knock on the windows of our office. She really hates that, as she’s very protective of her space.

Thanks for letting us formally introduce ourselves to you all! Please say “hi” in the hallways and maybe even have a conversation with us.

TURKEY TROT EVENT RAISES FUNDS FOR TOTS

he inaugural 5k Turkey Trot Fun Run Fundraiser was held Nov. 8 at Ben Lomond High School.

The event was a combined effort between the Ben Lomond and Ogden High student government officers.

The fun run raised money for the Ogden School District’s Special Needs Preschool.

Depending upon their abilities, participants could choose between a 5k run or walk. More than 70 runners/ walkers signed up to participate. A pancake breakfast was served after the run.

According to Ms. Emily Child, student government adviser at Ben Lomond, the officers were able to reach their fundraising goal and will be able to provide items to the students at the preschool. In past years, students were able to raise enough money to provide new shoes to each of the preschoolers for Christmas.

LOOKING BACK IF YOU COULD TALK TO YOUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SELF, WHAT WOULD YOU SAY?

L

ooking back at the past, we wish that things could have been different than they were. We wish that we could have been more or less than we were, so today I ask you, if you could talk to your elementary school self, what would you say?

I asked multiple people around Ben Lomond High School, and their answers might surprise you.

Max Doss said, “Things change a lot more than you would think,” and isn’t that the truth.

Looking at the person we were in elementary school and the person we are now, most of us can see a huge difference. I mean I used to be the kid that would wrestle the boys and play kickball or tackle soccer at recess, and now I enjoy writing, spending time with loved ones, and going to church each week.

Some people’s answers still ring true even now. For example, Merik Shupe said, “Do your work, it’s not that hard.”

I think some of us still need to hear this. The school work really isn’t that hard when you do it. So it’s time to lock in and see what we can do. I have a shirt that says 42 | Ben Lomond Spirit Magazine

By Brynlee Richins, BL Spirit staff “The only thing that can stop me, is me” and I think that applies to this. When we actually try we can do a lot, we only fail when we give up.

Another person’s answer that still rings true is Patton Brun. She said, “Don’t make yourself small to fit in. Being extraverted and kind to everyone will get you very far.”

I love how she points out not “[making] yourself small to fit in.”

There is something special about each of us, and so we need to avoid changing ourselves to fit in.

The most important people in our lives, and our true friends, will accept us exactly as we are. Being kind will definitely get you very far in life, and if there is anything this world needs right now, it is kindness.

Kolby Mudrow said, “Have fun, keep your head up, and don’t let the little things get to you, just keep moving.”

He has some great points. Sometimes we let the little things get to us and so we stop having fun and moving forward. If anyone is looking for a good book about learning to not let the little things get

to us, I suggest “Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff – and It’s All Small Stuff” by Richard Carlson. It’s a great book that is very helpful.

Ryan Church, a BLHS wrestler, said, “Eat more. Make sure that you stay focused in class because it’s going to backfire when you get higher (along in your education) if you don’t.”

Staying focused is a huge part of class and if you can manage to stay focused, then all of the work becomes much easier.

Edwin Huerta said, “First thing I would tell my elementary school self is to just go out and be yourself no matter what happens, and to always chase your dreams. I would also tell my younger self to hang around people that influence you in the right way instead of the wrong way, and at the end of the day just have faith in yourself in whatever you do.”

Edwin has some wise words not only for his younger self but for us, too. Going after your dreams is important and will help you to be happier in the future and not have as many regrets when you look back at yourself in 20 years.

Hanging out with people who influence you for the better is so im-

portant and you will be grateful for it later on in your life.

“Have faith in yourself in whatever you do.” How important is that? Very important! Whatever you do in this life you will do much better, you will get a lot farther, and most importantly you will be much happier, if you have faith in yourself and what you do.

When I asked myself this question, many thoughts ran through

my head, like, “Stand up for yourself” and “Be part of more than just your classes.” I was bullied for 10 years and didn’t do anything besides classes until this year – unless choir class counts.

But everything that happened has shaped me into who I am today.

So I would simply say, “Keep going and enjoy it.”

What we can do instead is take the advice we would have told our younger self and tell ourselves now. Whether it’s to “Do your work,” “Keep your head up,” “Don’t make yourself small to fit in,” “Have faith in yourself,” “Don’t do stupid crap,” “Have fun,” or anything else, we can apply that to ourselves now.

Each of us have regrets and we wish we could go back in time and change something, but we can’t. That’s not the way it works.

So I ask you this one question, “If your future self could come back in time and tell you something today, what would they say?”

WINTER SPORTS A NEW SEASON OF SPORTS KICKS OFF

T

ime for another round of hard but fun sports! Here comes winter sports.

DRILL TEAM The Ben Lomond Drill Team is known for its energetic, synchronized routines performed at games and competitions. Members of the team show school pride and dedication, inspiring fans throughout the season.

Kimberly Hopkin, the drill coach, finds joy in “starting each year, seeing the new people learn basics, going from nothing to competing,” and especially in “the success they feel through the hard times, because it’s a hard sport.”

Ms. Hopkin says she loves seeing her students’ growth over time, and that the team’s goals are sportsmanship and constant improvement.

Last year at the state competition, the Lassies won the 2024 sportsmanship award, which Ms. Hopkin called “a big honor.”

The team is co-ed, and Ms. Hopkin encourages anyone curious to “join a clinic to learn what it’s about.”

Group members pour their souls into being a Lassie, and it shows in everything they do, according to Ms. Hopkin.

WRESTLING Wrestling is a sport that blends strength, skill, and perseverance.

Athletes compete individually and as a team, focusing on technique and sportsmanship. The wrestling team trains throughout the winter, learning new moves, building endurance, and supporting each other at every match.

Each match is a test of willpower and determination, as wrestlers strive not only for victory but for personal growth and improvement.

It’s clear the team puts in countless hours both on and off the mat to represent their school.

BOYS BASKETBALL The boys basketball team has taken to the court again, working together to increase their skills, build strong teamwork, and compete in every game. I was fortunate enough to watch some of their practice, they had two teams on either side, both working on their skills and training for their season.

During our conversation with Coach Lyndon Johnson, he reflected on what makes coaching rewarding.

“We want to play hard and have fun,” he explained. “We mold people into people they can be in the future.”

Coach Johnson also explained the feeling and atmosphere of the team.

“It’s going to be a great season, fun to watch,” he said. “If you want to play, watch our games and learn about our spring season.”

Coach Johnson’s words highlight both the excitement of the sport and the focus on personal development for every player.

GIRLS BASKETBALL As I went over to the tryouts, I could see how hard these lady Scots were trying. They were right in the middle of tryouts, and the effort they put in – and the help they got from one of the coaches – showed that this was going to be a strong team later in the year. The girls basketball team also brings energy and determination to the court. Players showcase their talent and perseverance, supporting one another through practices and games.

Coach Jamie Phippen shared her excitement about her first season coaching girls basketball.

“Even though it’s my first season, I’m excited to develop better players,” she said. “The girls are amazing, it’s all about defining their skills.”

The main goal Coach Phippen has for the girls is to help each one grow.

“I hope that each girl has a goal, but I mostly just want to improve their skills,” she explains.

Coach Phippen emphasized how important student support is for the team.

“We would love support,” she said.

“It can be hard to fill stands, especially girls (sports), so we want them to come. We even have things for them if students do come.”

This year is sure to be exciting.

SWIM Make an impact this winter by supporting the swim team as they enter their season with passion and water-splitting techniques. Every meet shows each member’s speed, strength, and heart as they race against different schools – not only for their personal bests, but also for school pride. From things like relays to tough finishes, the energy is electric. So don’t miss out on this school sport, led by coaches Filippo Castronovo and Tim Booth. Support the swim team in their aquatic endeavors.

CHEER Our cheer team flies high and

shines bright each winter, energizing the crowd and supporting every athlete at games and events. Cheerleaders work hard to unite the students and keep the spirit high. Their routines are a highlight at every game, showing off skills in teamwork, athletics, and leadership. Beyond the sidelines, the team spends hours perfecting the routines. Win or lose, their enthusiasm helps make every season memorable for our school.

So come out, share your support for these hard workers, and together we can make a winter sports spirit record.
