WEBER COUNTY HISTORIC TIMELINE Marshes along the shoreline of the Great Salt Lake and two local rivers draw trappers, including John Henry Weber and Peter Skene Ogden, hunting beaver and muskrat.

Weber Stake Academy opens (forerunner to Weber State University).

The trains of Union Pacific, Central Pacific and Utah Central begin using a “Union” depot in Ogden.

Ogden-Weber Chamber of Commerce is founded.

Fifty miles to the northwest of Ogden at Promontory Summit, the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads meet to create the first transcontinental railroad.

Miles Goodyear builds Fort Buenaventura on a bend of the Weber River. Sold to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the fort grows to become Ogden City.

Utah’s first telephones are installed in Ogden businesses.

Ogden Arsenal is completed by the United States Army Ordnance Department and used to store munitions.

Ogden High School is completed as the United States’ first million-dollar high school.

Weber County’s population reaches 52,000.

Construction begins on the Utah General Depot.

It would later be renamed Defense Depot Ogden and serve as one of the largest supply depots in the nation.

Weber Stake Academy becomes a state junior college.

Construction begins on the Hill Field air base, which would be renamed Hill Air Force Base in 1948.

The Ogden Utah Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints opens. It is the church’s first temple built in the state of Utah as its four previous temples built in Utah were dedicated while Utah was still a territory.

The Ogden Utah Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is rededicated following a more than three-year renovation that completely changed the exterior look of the structure.

The Ogden City Mall is demolished.

Weber State College awards its first baccalaureate degree.

Weber State College is renamed Weber State University.

The Ogden Raptors baseball team is launched as an independent team playing in the Pioneer League.

The Junction, a 20-acre entertainment, retail, office, and residential complex is built on the site of the former Ogden City Mall.

Defense Depot Ogden is closed; the land and buildings are sectionalized and deeded to Ogden City.

Later, the Boyer Company enters into a long-term agreement with the city to manage and develop the facility, now known as Business Depot Ogden.

The Nine Rails Creative District Master Plan is established to propose an epicenter for art and culture.

Ogden was originally named Brownsville. Captain James Brown, a soldier in the Mormon Battalion of the U.S. Army during the Mexican War in the 1840s, purchased all of the land now comprising Weber County from trapper Miles Goodyear. Ogden has carried the nickname “Junction City” due to its railroad history.

With the establishment of the transcontinental railroad in 1869, Ogden Union Depot Ogden circa 1896 became the location of Used by permission, Utah State Historical Society a junction between the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroads. This meant all passengers, baggage and shipping went through the city as it traveled east or west, and later north or south, across the nation. There are more examples of Art Deco architecture in Ogden than any other Utah city. Ogden High School, the U.S. Forest Service Regional Headquarters and the Ogden Municipal Building were all built using Art Deco building style. (visitogden.com) A popular resort known as Utah Hot Springs operated near Pleasant View beginning in the late 1880s. Guests flocked to the resort from surrounding areas and other states. In 1927, a fire destroyed its buildings; the resort was rebuilt and it was a popular swimming destination for families. Its popularity waned over the years as other attractions drew visitors away, and the land was sold to a private company in 1970. (northogdenconnection.com) Ogden native and National Inventors Hall of Fame inductee Rodney D. Bagley invented the method for making the cellular ceramic heart of the catalytic converter used in cars. His colleagues Ron Lewis and Irv Lachman invented the ceramic substrate. His process is still used 50 years later and has reduced Rodney D. Bagley pollution from emissions and lead (because it led to removing lead from gas), going far to fulfill the aim of the 1970 U.S. Clean Air Act. He is a named inventor on 17 patents and received many awards. Since the 1970s, vehicles equipped with advanced emission controls have reduced pollutants by over 3 billion tons worldwide. With 8,484 acres of skiable terrain, Powder Mountain is North America´s largest ski area. Even on the busiest day, you will only find one skier per two acres of terrain. (utah.com) Two ships in the United States Navy have been named after the city of Ogden. The USS Ogden (PF-39), a Tacoma-class frigate, The USS Ogden (LPD-5) in 2003 was launched June 23, 1943. During World War II, she took part in operations in New Guinea and the Philippines. At one point, while the ship was at Leyte, Philippines, a bomb missed it by only 50 yards. The USS Ogden (LPD-5), an Austin-class amphibious transport dock, was launched on June 27, 1964.

It supported operations during the Vietnam War, Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom and the global war on terrorism. Decommissioned in 2007, the second USS Ogden was sunk during a sinking exercise in 2014 northwest of Kauai, Hawaii.(history.uscg.mil, uscarriers.net) In 2002, the world’s attention turned to Weber County as it hosted several events during the 2002 Winter Olympic Games. The Ogden Ice Sheet hosted both the men’s and women’s curling competitions. Snowbasin Resort was the ski venue for the Downhill, Combined and Super G events. (uen.org) Built in 1937, Ogden High School was the first in the nation to have a construction cost of more than $1 million. It was listed on the National Register of Ogden High School Used by permission, Utah State Historical Society Historic Places in 1983.

Ogden High School was the setting of fictional Weaver High School in the 1987 film “Three O’Clock High.” In the mid 2000s, the school underwent substantial renovations to restore its grandeur. (ogdensd.org)

COUNTY COMMISSION

Weber County is governed by the Weber County Commission. Currently, the commission’s three elected members are Sharon Arrington Bolos, James H. “Jim” Harvey and Gage Froerer. This form of government is somewhat unique as the commissioners fulfill both legislative and administrative functions. The commissioners develop policies for the county, then work to carry out those policies.

Several communities within Weber County are unincorporated, meaning services such as policing are provided by the county. While often small from a population standpoint and farther away from the center of activity, these communities can offer impressive amenities. Weber County’s unincorporated areas are Eden, Liberty, Nordic Valley, Reese, Taylor, Warren and West Weber.

HARRISVILLE

Named after former resident Lorin Farr, Farr West features rural open spaces with working farms and dairies while also offering easy access to the I-15 freeway, which runs through the center of the city.

It’s a great location for both businesses and residents; young families are abundant here.

Harrisville is a tightknit, caring community located 2 miles northwest of downtown Ogden. A rich historic heritage and quality of life is found here. City amenities include a fishing pond stocked with rainbow trout and a splash pad open throughout the summer.

Marriott-Slaterville is located west of Ogden and made up of a generous amount of farmland and occasional small subdivisions. The Utah House of Representatives adopted a resolution designating Marriott-Slaterville as Utah’s Model Open Space City; the community promotes local agriculture and sustainability.

PLEASANT VIEW

North Ogden rests at the base of Ben Lomond Peak, a prominent mountain on the Wasatch Front. Residents have easy access to North Ogden Canyon and Nordic Valley Ski Resort. It’s a family-oriented community where walking, hiking and mountain biking trails as well as other public amenities are plentiful.

Pleasant View is a beautiful bedroom community with a strong sense of heritage and belonging.

Located at the base of Ben Lomond Peak, the city has large residential lots in the foothills and a commercial corridor located mainly along SR-89 and 2700 North that is steadily growing.

ROY

Riverdale is known for its bustling commercial district, but it also has a vibrant residential community. It offers the convenience of countless business and dining options along with freeway access, and its southern border is adjacent to Hill Air Force Base.

Roy is situated just west of the northern area of Hill Air Force Base. The city is home to a FrontRunner commuter rail station, and residents enjoy the Roy City Recreation Complex, which includes a swimming pool, basketball courts, a weight room and an indoor track, as well as the outdoor Roy Aquatic Center.

SOUTH OGDEN

Population: 17,716 southogdencity.com Annual city celebration: South Ogden Days, mid-June Modern historical development of South Ogden as a suburban community was spurred by its easy access to major employment centers including Hill Air Force Base and Ogden City. Today, it remains a beautiful place to work and live with its diverse neighborhoods and excellent commercial districts.

WASHINGTON TERRACE

Uintah is located at the mouth of Weber Canyon and is bordered by the Weber River on the south and west. The town largely serves as a bedroom community for Ogden and Salt Lake City. It is a tradition for the town to turn out each spring on “U-Day” to whitewash the big block letter “U” on the mountain east of town.

Washington Terrace has all the advantages of a smaller community while being in close proximity to the goods, services, educational, professional and cultural opportunities of larger metropolitan areas. With a high school, junior high and multiple elementary schools, it’s perfect for families of school-aged children.

BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF WEBER-DAVIS Since its founding in 2000, Boys and Girls Clubs of Weber-Davis has provided thousands of local youth with high-quality after-school programs that teach them how to lead productive, successful lives.

Now, that influence is being expanded with the addition of more club locations in the Weber County area. At the beginning of the 2023-24 school year, Boys and Girls Clubs of Weber-Davis opened two new teen clubs — one at Ogden High School and the second at Ben Lomond High School.

BGCWD already operated six clubs in local elementary schools as well as an elementary club and teen club at the Roy Hope Community Center. These two new teen clubs are BGCWD’s first to be located within high schools.

BGCWD also opened a new elementary club this school year at Roosevelt Elementary School in Washington Terrace.

Boys & Girls Clubs offers a place where students receive help with homework and other academic issues. “We work directly with the principals to provide a continuation of the school day,” said James Ebert, executive director of Boys & Girls Clubs of Weber-Davis.

However, while academics are an important emphasis of the club, students gain much more through participation

in Boys & Girls Clubs. They are taught leadership and character-building skills, they learn about cooking and how to live a healthy lifestyle, they enjoy STEM and art activities, and they play sports together.

Opening these new clubs makes these programs available to more area students. Schools serve as an excellent location for them as BGC site directors work directly with school teachers and principals to address individual students needs and concerns.

“There’s just such a huge need, and we’ve been very fortunate to have such a great relationship with the school districts,” Ebert said.

As part of its effort to expand its offerings, BGCWD is working with Roy City and the Weber School District to create a club location in the old Roy Junior High School. That location is anticipated to include an academic center, a recreational center and an area for culinary classes. Funds are currently being raised to help complete this new location.

Each school club is open to the students who attend that school. The Roy Hope site is open to all area youth.

Enrollment in all clubs is limited; parents wishing to enroll their children in a club can inquire at their school’s office or contact Boys & Girls Clubs of Weber-Davis at 801-627-2071.

With the new club sites up and running, the next goal is to enhance the clubs’ career development offerings, Ebert said. This would include partnering with local businesses and industries to place students in job internships so they can experience career possibilities first-hand.

Two public school districts along with private and charter schools serve younger students while a state university offers associate, baccalaureate and graduate degrees. A state-funded technology college provides certificate programs and continuing education courses.

STATE-OF-THE-ART HEALTHCARE JUST MINUTES AWAY

No matter what Weber County city you call home, you are located within minutes of state-of-the-art hospitals and a wide variety of healthcare clinics with a full spectrum of specialty physicians. Multiple rehabilitation centers are available locally and nearly every community has a senior citizen center or programming for seniors.

McKAY-DEE HOSPITAL

McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden is part of Intermountain Healthcare, a nonprofit healthcare system based in Salt Lake City that meets the healthcare needs of people throughout the Intermountain West. It includes hospitals, clinics, affiliate networks, homecare, telehealth and other services.

Founded in 1910 as a small community hospital, McKay-Dee has grown into a world-class, full-service regional hospital. Its open-air levels, breathtaking views of the mountains and large patient rooms provide a calm, healing environment.

Currently, the hospital offers 63 specialties and 319 patient beds and serves as a Level II Trauma Center.

McKay-Dee offers nationally ranked programs, including the Heart and Vascular Institute, Newborn ICU, the

Cancer Center, McKay-Dee Spine Institute, emergency and trauma services and the McKay-Dee Surgery Center and Orthopedics. Additional services include neurosurgery, women and newborn, pediatrics, surgical, a family practice residency, behavioral

health services and more.

In 2020, McKay-Dee was named to the IBM Watson Health’s Top 100 hospitals list, a listing based on an annual study of the nation’s top performing hospitals for quality care and patient satisfaction.

OGDEN CLINIC

Not all health issues or treatments require a hospital visit, and Weber County offers a full spectrum of care through clinics providing the latest in healthcare technology.

For example, Ogden Clinic, a physician-owned organization, has more than 10 locations inside Weber County and more in its surrounding area. It offers specialized care in a long list of areas ranging from family medicine to cancer treatment, general surgery, laboratory services, neurology, women’s health, pediatrics and physical therapy.

SNOWBASIN RESORT Snowbasin Resort is an all-season recreation resort with championship-level skiing. OGDEN CITY ARTS Few cities are as forward-thinking as Ogden when it comes to the arts. Art creation and art access are priorities here, and Ogden City commits funding and staff to support both.

The Ogden City Arts Advisory Committee, a group of volunteers, is a city-run committee that oversees Ogden arts programs and efforts with assistance from the city’s arts administrator. One of the committee’s annual responsibilities is distributing grant funds. Anything or anyone in the arts — from large performing organizations to individual artists — can apply for these grants.

In addition to the grant program, the Ogden City Arts Advisory Committee oversees the operation of a wide variety of venues and programs, including the following:

NINE RAILS CREATIVE DISTRICT:

In 2018, the Ogden City Council approved a master plan for the Nine Rails Creative District. Defined as the area between Grant and Madison Avenues from 24th to 26th Streets, this district is designed to create new opportunities for the community to engage with art while supporting creative places, programs and people. The name Nine Rails refers to Ogden’s history as a railroad town that served as a hub for nine different rail lines during World War II. It is also symbolic of the Nine Muses from Greek mythology.

DUMKE ARTS PLAZA:

This plaza is the newest addition to the Nine Rails Creative District. This flexible public area provides space for smaller festivals and performances as well as art installations. Film and video art can be shown on the plaza’s large LED screen. Through an endowment, Weber State University provides a rotating sculpture exhibit at the plaza, bringing international-quality art to residents.

FIRST FRIDAY ART STROLL:

On the first Friday of each month, various businesses in Ogden’s downtown area host an artist for the evening. The public is invited to visit the businesses, meet the artists and watch them work. While these are mainly visual artists, musicians and poets participate as well.

GRANT AVENUE MURALS:

These murals were created as part of Ogden’s robust public arts program.

In 2020, artist Don Rimx of Puerto Rico painted five 40-foot by 50-foot murals along Ogden’s Grant Avenue depicting important moments and people in Ogden’s history.

LOCAL ARTIST DATABASE: The Local Artist Database lists artists of any type (musicians, woodworkers, sculptors, etc.) along with their contact information. This provides the Ogden community with a central location where they can find craftspeople and artists of different genres for projects, commissions and collaborations. TRAIL TO PIONEER DAYS Each summer, a herd of life-sized fiberglass horses appears on the streets of downtown Ogden as part of the excitement leading up to the annual Pioneer Days Rodeo at Ogden’s Pioneer Stadium. Known as the “Trail to Pioneer Days,” this horse project is one of the largest public arts projects of its kind in Utah.

The more than 60 horses designed and painted by talented area artists are displayed on Historic 25th Street and Washington Boulevard and at The Junction, a recreation and entertainment district. The horses are sponsored by individuals and businesses.

Pioneer Days is Ogden’s annual city celebration and commemorates the settlement of the city.

Malan’s Falls is the most well-known area for ice climbing in the wintertime, although there are a number of other locations popular with climbers.

The Weber State University Wildcats compete in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision and are a member of the Big Sky Conference. With more than 13,000 seats, Stewart Stadium at WSU serves as the venue for home games. The Weber Wildcats men’s basketball team is also classified as NCAA Division I and part of the Big Sky Conference. This team’s home is the Dee Events Center, an 11,500seat indoor arena at WSU.

This Junior A hockey team plays at The Ice Sheet and is part of the United States Premier Hockey League.

OGDEN RAPTORS:

The Ogden Raptors are an independent baseball team of the Pioneer League, which is an MLB Partner League. The Raptors play at Lindquist Field in downtown Ogden. With the Wasatch Mountains as a backdrop, Lindquist Field has been rated as possessing the “Best View” in all of professional baseball.

The alliance supports and promotes many activities and programs downtown including arts performances and events, Farmers Market Ogden, Spring Beer Fest and the Urban Adventure Festival. The event brings regional artists and entertainers to the historic Union Station in Ogden.

OGDEN MUSIC FESTIVAL: Attendees listen to live music and children are invited to participate in crafts and activities.

UNION STATION The Ogden Union Station was dedicated on Nov. 22, 1924. For nearly 40 years, this train station was a bustling focal point of northern Utah. However, by the 1960s, the use of trains for passenger travel had decreased dramatically. Ogden City eventually obtained the station and remodeled it using local, state and federal funding. It has served as a museum since 1978.

Ogden’s Union Station now houses four museums: the Utah State Railroad Museum, the John M. Browning Firearms Museum, the Browning–Kimball Classic Car Museum, and the Utah Cowboy Western Heritage Museum.

FARMERS MARKET OGDEN Every Saturday morning from late June through late September, farmfresh produce takes center stage on Ogden’s Historic 25th Street. Vendors with everything from peaches and pears to corn, lettuce and tomatoes set up shop and exhibit their wares to the public. Visitors can also find locally roasted coffee and baked goods as well as arts and crafts items. Live musicians and activities for the kids give the weekly event a festival-like atmosphere.

Later in the season, a slimmed-down version of the event known as the Fall Market is held on Saturday mornings through October. Held at the Ogden Amphitheater, the Fall Market features a wide array of produce and specialty artisan goods as well as warm seasonal beverages. Those attending can enjoy live music, yoga and other activities.

OGDEN UTAH TEMPLE Located in The Junction area of downtown Ogden is the Ogden Utah Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This beautiful stoneclad building with art glass windows underwent a major renovation that was completed in 2014; this effort encouraged more redevelopment and beautification in The Junction area. Visitors can enjoy the impeccably landscaped grounds of the temple or go across the street to the Ogden FamilySearch Center where they can obtain assistance in learning more about the genealogy of their family.

THE WONDERBLOCK After several years of planning, including extensive public input, Ogden City’s Make Ogden Downtown Master Plan was adopted in 2020, establishing a 25-year vision to guide the growth and development of downtown Ogden.

Ogden holds within its downtown core a collection of historic, cultural, recreational and natural assets that is unmatched along the Wasatch Front.

Make Ogden is a master plan that envisions capitalizing on these assets through transformative infill of vacant and underutilized parcels to build a thriving downtown that improves the lives of residents and bolsters the city’s financial health and prosperity.

The Make Ogden plan establishes its vision through a series of catalytic projects in key locations around the city’s Central Business District that will occur in “episodes” or phases in which the city investment in the public realm, coupled with developer incentives, will attract private investment to increase land values, density and walkability.

In Episode 1 of Make Ogden, there is a strong emphasis on increasing the supply and variety of housing types in downtown Ogden – within easy walking distance to Historic 25th Street – to appeal to a diversity of residents. A project called the WonderBlock will help fulfill a portion of that emphasis.

The WonderBlock area, former home to a Hostess production plant, is a vacant parcel off the north side of 26th Street between Grant and Lincoln avenues, just south of Historic 25th Street.

The WonderBlock development will be a combination of residential dwellings, retail, offices services and food and beverage as well as hospitality.

All of the project elements will be connected via attractive public spaces that will support special events, creating a unique sense of place that will draw people throughout the region to Ogden’s

BUSINESS DEPOT OGDEN Business Depot Ogden (BDO) is a premier industrial business park situated on 1,118 acres with excellent access to Interstate 15 and Interstate 84 with easy access to the Western United States.

BDO has more than 13.4 million square feet of warehousing, manufacturing and office space and an additional 225 acres of ground available for new development. More than 130 unique businesses and 6,500 employees have made BDO their home.

The area was formerly known as the Defense Depot Ogden, a military hub for supplies and transport that operated for 54 years. In 1940, the U.S. Army requested the War Department establish a depot for distribution of equipment to field a force of 500,000 men. In under 48 hours, the citizens of Ogden rallied together to raise nearly $100,000 to purchase land and ensure the War Department selected their city as the site. Within months, 41 buildings were under construction. On Sept. 15, 1941, the new Defense Depot Ogden officially opened.

For the next 55 years, Defense Depot Ogden continued to be an important asset to the U.S. military, providing supplies for engagements such as the Korean, Vietnam and Desert Storm conflicts.

In 1995, Defense Depot Ogden was closed, and during the next few years, the land and buildings were sectionalized and deeded to Ogden City.

In 1999, the Boyer Company entered into a long-term agreement with the city to manage and develop the facility into the future, creating what is today Business Depot Ogden.

OGDEN BUS RAPID TRANSIT Weber County’s newest transportation option is the Ogden Express, also known as OGX. After more than 20 years of planning and two years of construction, this bus rapid transit system opened to the public in August of 2023.

Utilizing a fleet of electric buses and dedicated bus lanes, OGX connects the Ogden Central FrontRunner light rail station to Weber State University and McKay-Dee Hospital. Along the way, the buses transport riders through downtown Ogden with stops at or near The Junction entertainment complex, Peery’s Egyptian Theater, the David Eccles Conference Center, the Ogden Amphitheater, historic 25th Street, the Weber County Library, Ogden High School, Mount Ogden Junior High School and the Dee Events Center.

Riders can catch the bus every 10 to 15 minutes on weekdays and 15 to 30 minutes on weekends, and the service is available for free for three years. The system is faster than traditional UTA bus service thanks in part to technology on the OGX buses that will coordinate traffic light changes with bus flow along the route.

“Bus rapid transit is truly a faster way

of travel,” said Federal Transit Administration Administrator Nuria Fernandez during the grand opening ceremony for OGX. “It is light rail on rubber tires, and the ability to put that system in the median as you’re traversing through it and also having the technology, the innovation, the signal priority — that’s going to give that sense of movement that you’re going to be able to get where you want to go safe, fast, frequent and reliably.”

There are a total of 11 stations between the FrontRunner Ogden Central Station on one end of the route and McKay-Dee Hospital on the other end.

Once OGX riders have reached the FrontRunner station, they can take that light rail train into Salt Lake City and as far south as Provo.

OGX service runs on the following schedule: • Every 10 minutes on weekdays (4:30 a.m. to midnight) and every 5 minutes between the Weber State Central and Dee Events Center stations in conjunction with the OGX Wildcat Shuttle • Every 15 minutes on Saturdays (9 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.)

• Every 30 minutes on Sundays (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.)

OUR WELL-CONNECTED PUBLIC TRANSIT SYSTEM BUS SERVICE

Utah Transit Authority (UTA) provides bus routes throughout Weber County, including routes to some of the area’s major employment centers. Bus service is available to surrounding communities, including Brigham City and Salt Lake City. During the winter, UTA offers bus service to Snowbasin and Powder Mountain ski resorts. In downtown Ogden, UTA operates a free trolley service that transports visitors to popular shopping, dining and entertainment areas.

LIGHT RAIL

The bus service ties into UTA’s commuter rail service, FrontRunner, at stations in both Ogden and Roy. FrontRunner connects Weber County to many other communities along the Wasatch Range, including Salt Lake City and Provo. Riders can easily transfer from FrontRunner to the TRAX light rail system in Salt Lake City and ride to communities throughout the Salt Lake Valley, the University of Utah and the Salt Lake City International Airport.

5600 S. INTERCHANGE RECONSTRUCTION Construction began in June of 2023 on a massive project that will reconstruct the 5600 South interchange on Interstate 15 in Weber County.

The project will also widen 5600 South from three lanes to five lanes between 1900 West and 3500 West as well as build a new trail system for pedestrians and cyclists.

This project will reduce congestion and improve safety and mobility on 5600 South, allowing residents to get around more easily whether they are walking, biking or driving.

It is anticipated to be completed in the fall of 2026. Cost of the project has been estimated at $238 million.

The interchange is located in Roy on the northwestern border of Hill Air Force Base near the Hill AFB Roy Gate.
