OUR ROOTS

I

n the 1820s, the abundant marshes stretching along the shoreline of the Great Salt Lake and the two rivers flowing from the Wasatch Mountains drew trappers hunting for beaver and muskrat.

One of those trappers was John Henry Weber, who spent nearly five years in the Rocky Mountain fur trade, much of it in northern Utah.

Today, Weber’s contribution to the early economics of the area now known as We-

ber County is memorialized in the county name as well as in the names of Weber Canyon, the Weber River, Weber State University and more. The tenacity and determination of Weber County’s first Native American residents, early fur traders and eventual settlers continued as communities were built, industries established and technologies of the future developed.

Early Native Americans who lived in the area had an advantage: plentiful water,

Weber County encompasses 644 square miles extending from the scenic Ogden Valley perched in the Wasatch Mountains at nearly 5,000 feet to the Great Salt Lake approximately 1,000 feet below. The variety of its scenic vistas is remarkable, ranging from rocky cliffs and high alpine meadows to flowing rivers, wetlands, tree-lined city streets and open farmland.

along with the animals and plants that flourished near it. These early residents included the Fremont, Shoshone and Ute people. Peter Skene Ogden — a trapper, and the namesake of the Ogden River and Ogden City — worked in the area with a trapping party in the 1820s. In 1845-46, mountain man and trapper Miles Goodyear built a fort on a large westward bend of the Weber River that served as a base for trapping and trading. Known as Fort Buenaventura, the fort and its outbuildings

were sold to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1847, and the settlement grew to become Ogden City.

On May 10, 1869, 50 miles to the northwest of Ogden at Promontory Summit, the Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads met to create the first transcontinental railroad.

This achievement brought on Weber County’s first growth spurt as Ogden became a major junction for transferring railroad cars, passengers and freight.

Other industries began to grow in the area, including woolen mills, canneries, livestock yards, banks, hotels and utility companies. The county truly served, and continues to serve, as a crossroads of the West.

Another population explosion occurred before and during World War II when Defense Depot Ogden, Hill Air Force Base and the Naval Supply Depot were created in the area. The war effort brought hundreds of trains per week through Ogden’s Union Station.

OUR GROWING, VIBRANT COMMUNITY A

s Weber County has grown to a population of more than 262,000, the community has managed to hold to its historic past while at the same time reach out to an exciting and prosperous future.

Both businesses and residents have seemingly found the area’s charm and are moving here to enjoy one of the West’s sparkling gems for quality of life. In Ogden’s downtown area, carefully renovated historic buildings are being transformed by incoming and growing businesses and residential units alike; in the business community, companies are starting up and relocating – attracted to the area’s skilled workforce; people are working together to volunteer and make a difference at nonprofit organizations and churches; and residents are enjoying the charm of the county’s individual cities where they come together to live life and build community.

Spurring much of the growth is the county’s leadership in state-of-the-art business development in the aerospace industry; Weber County serves as a base for companies like Barnes Aerospace, Boeing, Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman. Added to its aerospace strength is its world-class production and service in the manufacturing, transportation and finance industries.

While major corporations have chosen Weber County as their preferred location to do business, the area continues to maintain its agricultural roots. The U.S. Department of Agriculture reported that in 2017, the county was home to 1,260 farms producing $49.44 million in agricultural goods.

For those seeking urban living, it can be found in Ogden’s central downtown district where a growing number of housing options are available. The arts and cultural scene is alive, and Ogden is known for its selection of independently owned and award-winning restaurants.

No matter who you are or how you like to live, there is a place for you in Weber County.

Currently, the commission’s three elected members are Gage Froerer, James H. “Jim” Harvey and Scott Jenkins. This form of government is unique as the commissioners fulfill both legislative and administrative functions.

T

he heart of city life in Weber County is Ogden, the county seat and the county’s largest city.

As the second-largest metropolitan area in the state, the city serves as the economic core of northern Utah, and with about 60 percent of Weber County’s goods and services produced in Ogden, it’s also the county’s employment center.

Beyond its job opportunities, Ogden offers a quality of life that is unparalleled. The city’s dynamic downtown business district is a hub for cultural activities and entertainment venues. Take a casual stroll through Ogden’s downtown area and you’ll find yourself surrounded by an extraordinary selection of stores, coffee shops, art galleries, nightclubs and dining options. Each year, nearly 600 events are held in the downtown area ranging from concerts and arts festivals to athletic events and farmers’ markets.

The central business district is attracting a new generation of home buyers who are looking to be in the center of the action while spending less time commuting and more time enjoying a quality lifestyle. It’s also attracting older couples looking for a home base with less yard maintenance.

Students are moving to the area as well since downtown is located near both Weber State University and Ogden-Weber Technical College.

In recent years, new multi-family and single-family housing options have been developed in the downtown area; there are currently about 800 units either in the planning stage or under construction.

“You can do about anything you want to do within walking distance” in the downtown area, said Tom Christopulos, director of community and economic development for Ogden City.

Perhaps most uniquely, downtown residents can step outside their doors and enjoy outdoor recreational opportunities rarely found within a metro area. A network of walking, bicycling and hiking trails runs through and around the city. Residents can even go fishing after work as the city sits at the confluence of the Ogden and Weber rivers, both considered premier trout fisheries.

W

eber County’s suburban communities offer a residential lifestyle while being situated close to major transportation corridors and communities outside the Weber County area.

The housing options in these communities vary widely, ranging from new housing developments to historic neighborhoods filled with architectural charm.

Each of these cities has its own unique identity and offers amenities such as parks, community centers and city recreation programs.

Residents of the gateway communities are often drawn there to take full advantage of the short drive to Ogden’s downtown area while having easy access to surrounding cities, counties and states.

For example, Riverdale has two interstate highways within its city limits: I-15 and I-84. Anyone driving on I-84 in Riverdale can reach a full array of outdoor recreational opportunities within 20 to 30 minutes and even get to Wyoming in under two hours or Idaho within an hour.

The northern communities have quick access to the Ogden Valley through the North Ogden Divide and can easily access Brigham City and the Cache Valley area via I-15. Southern communities can head into the mountains on I-84 through Weber Canyon while also having easy access to downtown Ogden on US-89.

As Utah’s primary transportation corridor, I-15 runs north and south through the center of Weber County, giving Weber County’s central communities convenient access to other areas of the county and beyond.

Farr West is located on the north edge of Weber County with the I-15 freeway running conveniently through the middle of the city.

Formerly part of Harrisville, the city was renamed Farr West in 1890 after Lorin Farr, a leader in the local congregation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The city hosts an annual Freedom Festival to celebrate the Fourth of July with a parade, fireworks and other events.

Harrisville is located two miles northwest of downtown Ogden. Its first log house was built in 1850 just three years after the pioneers entered the Salt Lake Valley. The city was incorporated in 1962 with a population of 867. Today, city residents enjoy a community fishing pond that is stocked with rainbow trout and a splash pad open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. A unique perk of living in Harrisville is the ability to rent the Bowery, a large park pavilion, and the Martin Henderson Harris Bicentennial Cabin, a historic multi-purpose and recreational building.

North Ogden rests at the base of Ben Lomond Peak, a prominent mountain on the Wasatch Front. Residents have easy access to North Ogden Canyon leading to the array of recreation amenities in Ogden Valley. Since it was officially proclaimed a city in 1950, North Ogden’s city council members and residents have actively pursued the goals of encouraging family-oriented living. Municipal buildings and facilities have been constructed and improved including a library, swimming pool, parks, senior center, museum and nature trails. A landmark spring in Centennial Park known as “The Stump” offers free, refreshing, artesian well water for all to enjoy.

Annual city celebration: Founder’s Day, late June

Pleasant View lies on the northern edge of Weber County at the base of Ben Lomond mountain. The city enjoys spectacular mountain views, with many portions of the city overlooking the northern portion of the Salt Lake Valley. The town was named by Wilford Cragun, the first child born to pioneers who settled the area in the 1850s. It is said that Cragun looked over the community and remarked that it had a “pleasant view.” Each year in June, Pleasant View celebrates Founder’s Day with a variety of events including fireworks.

Known as Utah’s Open Space City, Marriott-Slaterville is located west of Ogden and is made up of a generous amount of farmland and occasional small subdivisions. However, residents are still close to Interstate 15, making transportation access easy. Marriott-Slaterville was incorporated in July of 1999, merging the formerly unincorporated communities of Marriott and Slaterville. The city’s history goes back much further, however; the area was settled in the 1850s.

Roy, considered a suburb of Ogden, is situated just west of the northern area of Hill Air Force Base. The base is easily accessed from Roy via State Route 97, a major transportation artery running through the city. Roy is also home to a FrontRunner commuter rail station. Residents enjoy the Roy City Recreation Complex, which includes a swimming pool, basketball courts, a weight room and an indoor track, as well as the outdoor Roy Aquatic Center.

Modern historical development of South Ogden as a suburban community was spurred by FHA-approved housing in 1949 and its easy access to major employment centers including Hill Air Force Base and Ogden City. Commercial development grew as well, with many of the current businesses locating in the city’s major business district after 1960. The southern part of the city developed during the late ’90s and early 2000s; large areas in the city’s southwest section were annexed into the city and another large business district was created there.

Uintah is located at the mouth of Weber Canyon five miles south of Ogden. It is bordered by the Weber River on the south and west and the Wasatch Mountains on the east. The town largely serves as a bedroom community for Ogden. With help from the community, a Boy Scout troop organized in 1923 built the big block letter “U” on the mountain east of town. It is a tradition for the town to turn out each spring on “U-Day” to whitewash the “U.”

he clear air, the acres of farmland, the wide-open spaces — it’s all found on the west side of Weber County. For those looking for a rural lifestyle, the west corridor is far enough away from the hustle and bustle of the big city for residents to enjoy the quiet and peace of the country, but only a 20-minute drive to the restaurants, shopping and activities of Ogden City. It’s the perfect balance of rural living and urban center amenities.

Of course, the open land is attractive to homebuilders as well as those seeking newer subdivisions and larger lots. Western Weber County is one of the fastest-growing areas in the state of Utah.

Plain City has gained more than 2,000 residents in the last decade, going from 5,483 people in 2010 to 7,669 in the 2019 U.S. Census Bureau estimate. Hooper is up 28 percent from its 2010 population of 7,147.

The biggest driver in population growth, however, is West Haven, which saw its population soar 56.6 percent from 2010 to 2019. Weber School District plans to build new schools in this area in the coming years to accommodate the growth.

New subdivisions are sprouting up fast, but they are still surrounded by acres of farmland, and West Corridor residents enjoy a panoramic view of the Wasatch Front mountains to the east. Growth is unavoidable, but cities here are actively working to maintain a quiet, rural lifestyle.

In 1991, the two unincorporated communities of Kanesville and Wilson were combined to create the new city of West Haven.

The city is located in southern Weber County, and the confluence of the Weber and Ogden rivers is located in its northeastern section.

Serving as a hub of activity is the 40-acre West Haven City Park where activities include rodeos, riding club practices, playground areas and sporting events including baseball, soccer and football. The city is also home to the West Haven River Parkway Trail, a multiuse, non-motorized recreational trail.

W

hen Weber County residents want to “get away from it all” or visitors want to find something “off the beaten path,” they often head to Ogden Valley, a center for recreational activities located in the mountains east of Ogden. Some call the valley home all year long, and it’s easy to see why. The views are spectacular, and the entire area is considered a sports enthusiasts’ playground.

Ogden Valley is home to Weber’s three ski resorts: Snowbasin, Powder Mountain and Nordic Valley.

Each resort provides a unique and complimentary skiing and outdoor experience. The Monte Cristo Mountains on the valley’s east side feature an extensive network of snowmobile trails that double as excellent horseback riding and four-wheeler trails in the summer. These mountains are also a favorite area for backcountry camping, hiking and snowshoeing.

Added to these activities is Causey Reservoir, which attracts anglers, cliff jumpers, stand-up paddleboarders and kayakers. The Ogden River provides Blue Ribbon trout fishing stretching from the reservoir down through Ogden Canyon and into Ogden City. The South Fork of the Ogden River, located above the reservoir, is equally attractive for fly fishing.

At the heart of the valley is Huntsville, a small town that lies on a peninsula jutting out into Pineview Reservoir, a body of water created by a dam that controls and stores Ogden River flood waters. Sheltered by the mountains, the reservoir’s water is generally calm and ideal for boating, water skiing, wakeboarding and fishing.

“The valley is really known for being a recreational mecca, and there’s a lot of people seeking its relaxing and rejuvenating lifestyle,” said Huntsville Mayor Jim Truett. “There’s not a day that goes by that I don’t cherish what I share here with my family and friends.”

The historic community of Huntsville is home to unique small businesses like the Shooting Star Saloon, the oldest continuously operating saloon west of the Mississippi River, and the Compass Rose Lodge, a newly built hotel in the heart of the city that includes an observatory where guests can view the constellations in an area free of artificial city lights.

Beyond the character and beauty of the area is the sense of community, Truett said. The valley is a wonderful place to raise a family; neighbors watch out for each other and are eager to help one another. “You cannot drive or walk down the street without someone waving at you,” he said. “It gives you a feeling you just can’t describe.”

WORLD CLASS SKI RESORTS Weber County may be best known for its collection of world-class ski resorts.

Powder Mountain Resort, Snowbasin Resort and Nordic Valley Ski Resort are all located in the Ogden Valley area — a high mountain valley cradled by the peaks of the Wasatch Mountains — and can be reached in 40 minutes or less from downtown Ogden.

There are 154 runs available ranging from beginner to advanced as well as two terrain parks, six lifts and three tows. The resort also offers a wide range of skiing lessons as well as backcountry experiences.

Snowbasin offers championship-level skiing and was selected to host the 2002 Winter Olympic downhill and giant slalom events. With nearly 3,000 skiable acres and 11 lifts, the resort is best known for wideopen bowls, graded runs, powder stashes days after a storm, and its four terrain parks. Snowbasin has world-class snowmaking capabilities and one of the most advanced lift systems in the West.

Guests can take a scenic gondola ride to Needles Lodge or a chair lift to John Paul Lodge, both of which offer fine dining.

From John Paul Lodge, foot passengers can also ride the Allen Peak Tram to the top of the mountain for expansive views of Ogden, Ogden Valley, the Great Salt Lake, Ben Lomond Peak and the 2002 Winter Olympics Downhill course.

Nordic Valley is a 140-acre boutique ski hill offering terrain for all skill levels and both skiers and snowboarders. There are three aerial lifts, one surface lift, 23 runs and the best night skiing in Utah. Famous for its ski school and family-friendly atmosphere, Nordic Valley attracted worldwide attention as one of the best downhill training ski areas for the 2002 Winter Olympics.

During the 2020-2021 winter season, Nordic Valley opened a new lift – the resort’s first high-speed detachable chairlift — as well as additional trails and snowmaking infrastructure. This is part of an expansion plan that will eventually more than triple Nordic Valley’s skiable areas.

WINTER FUN OFF THE SLOPES In Weber County, downhill skiing is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to winter recreation. Cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, fat biking and snowshoeing happen here on hundreds of miles of trails.

The Ogden Nordic Center, for example, has 15 and a half miles of groomed trails for skate and classic cross-country skiing and an additional 10 miles of snowshoeing trails at North Fork Park, northern Utah’s premier cross-country skiing destination.

Experience snowshoeing closer to the city by following the Bonneville Shoreline Trail in the winter. This trail runs along the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains above Ogden and those using it can snowshoe for miles in either direction. In the summer, it’s a great hiking destination.

For the ultimate in snow tubing, check out Wasatch Parc Snow Tubing at Nordic Valley where designers have engineered the fastest and steepest hill possible while still providing a safe, family-friendly experience.

Ice skating can be enjoyed outdoors on Pineview Reservoir in the Ogden Valley or indoors at The Ice Sheet in downtown Ogden, a 2002 Winter Olympics venue.

WALKING, HIKING, CYCLING, CLIMBING Hundreds of miles of trails run around and through Ogden City and up into the mountains as part of the Ogden Trails Network. The trail options range from easily navigated paved pathways to challenging routes that take hikers far above the valley floor. One of the most popular trails is the Ogden River Parkway, a 9.6-mile paved parkway that begins at the mouth of Ogden Canyon and follows the river through the downtown area.

The trails continue into the foothills and up the slopes of the Wasatch Mountains, with options available for beginner to expert-level hikers. Some trailheads are accessible before you leave the city limits.

Many of these trails are also open to road bike cyclists and mountain bikers.

Mountain bikers can also enjoy the Ogden Bike Park, a facility offering more than 30 acres of mountain bike and BMX trails and jumps. Created with funds raised by volunteers, the bike park features more than

10 trails ranging from beginner to expert.

Ranked by Rock & Ice Magazine as a top 10 climbing town, Ogden is a destination spot for climbers. A variety of challenges can be found in the rocky cliffs near the city’s eastern edge and in Ogden Canyon, including areas for sport climbing, top rope climbing and more. At the Ogden Boulder Field, climbers can test themselves by facing a variety of ascension difficulties.

Those who want to learn how to climb or practice their skills can utilize several privately owned climbing facilities in the area. The public can also access the Weber Rocks Climbing Wall at Weber State University, which offers drop-in recreation hours as well as training and equipment.

Each year, climbers can participate in the Ogden Climbing Festival, the premier climbing event in the region. There are also a number of ice climbing locations that form in the wintertime, with Malan’s Falls as the most well-known ice wall.

ATTRACTIONS Dinosaurs, gardens, airplanes and museums – they’re all found in Weber County, and they can be enjoyed for an hour or an entire day.

Residents can gain inspiration for beautifying their own homes at the Ogden Botanical Gardens. Located on 11 acres of land next to the Ogden River, the gardens feature hundreds of varieties of annuals, perennials and trees. Visitors can enjoy a walk or picnic and obtain information about plant selection and environmentally sound gardening methods.

Also helping residents learn more about the outdoors is the Ogden Nature Center, a

152-acre preserve that brings in more than 50,000 youth and adults each year to observe and learn about plants and animals up close. Various community programs are offered on topics such as birding, photography and outdoor recreation.

History comes to life at locations such as the Hill Aerospace Museum, which exhibits historic airplanes and attracts more than 300,000 visitors a year, and Fort Buenaventura, which hosts festivals and activities centered on the history of the Ogden area and offers a new 18-hole disc golf course.

Bird lovers can view a wide range of species at the Ogden Bay Waterfowl Management Area, a 20,000-acre wetland area located adjacent to the Great Salt Lake. The roads through this area are open to hikers year-round.

In the spring and summer, the powder of Utah’s ski slopes melts into clear mountain lakes and streams. This leads to loads of summer fun for Weber residents as they enjoy the county’s more than 13,000 acres of freshwater lakes and rivers.

Pineview Reservoir and Causey Reservoir, both located in the Ogden Valley, are popular locations for those looking to spend a day on the water. Pineview Reservoir is perfect for boating, windsurfing and fishing, and three swim areas with sandy beaches make it a great place for swimming.

Causey Reservoir is motor-free, making it attractive to paddle boarders and kayakers. The reservoir is also a popular swimming, cliff jumping and fishing spot.

Flowing out of Causey Reservoir is the South Fork of the Ogden River, which is a renowned trout fishery.

DOWNTOWN OGDEN The most famous section of Ogden’s downtown area is Historic 25th Street, a hot spot during the age when Ogden served as a major railroad and transportation hub.

Lined with historic buildings lovingly renovated to exhibit their unique architecture, 25th Street now attracts fans of art, fine food, unique shopping opportunities and an exciting nightlife.

Just north of 25th Street is The Junction, an entertainment and recreation district full of activities for all ages such as movie theaters, restaurants and shops. Central

SPORTING EVENTS As a college town, Ogden offers the excitement and rivalry of college sports. The Weber State University Wildcats compete in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision and are a member of the Big Sky Conference. With more than 17,000 seats, Stewart Stadium at WSU serves as the venue for home games.

The men’s basketball team is also classified as NCAA Division I and part of the Big Sky Conference. The team’s home is the Dee Events Center, an 11,500-seat indoor arena at WSU. Ogden City is home base for the Ogden Raptors. Raptors action can be seen at Lindquist Field, a high-tech outdoor facility located in downtown Ogden. With the Wasatch Mountains as a backdrop, Lindquist Field has been rated as having the “Best View” in all of professional baseball.

For hockey fans, there’s the Ogden Mustangs, a Tier 3, Level A Western States Hockey League team that plays at The Ice Sheet.

PERFORMING AND VISUAL ARTS Arts and culture are highly valued in the Weber area, as is shown by the long list of arts- and culture-related events held here every year. One of the foremost of these events is the First Friday Art Stroll, which takes place in Ogden’s downtown area on the first Friday of every month. This event brings people out to visit local galleries, view new exhibit openings, meet the artists and enjoy live music as they stroll along the city streets.

The festivities continue throughout the year, including the Ogden Arts Festival, which brings regional artists and entertainers to the historic Union Station, and the Ogden Music Festival, where attendees

listen to live music and children are invited to participate in crafts and activities. The outdoor Ogden Amphitheater hosts the popular Ogden Twilight concert series each summer, which features a variety of musical artists who perform for thousands of attendees.

Additionally, several theaters operate in the Ogden area, including the landmark Peery’s Egyptian Theater. This 800-seat performing arts venue presents live theatrical and musical events as well as films.

OGDEN’S UNION STATION Ogden’s Union Station was dedicated on Nov. 22, 1924. For nearly 40 years, the train station was a bustling focal point of northern Utah. However, by the 1960s, the use of trains for passenger travel had decreased dramatically.

tion and remodeled it using local, state and federal funding. It has served as a museum since 1978.

OGDEN UTAH TEMPLE Located in The Junction area of downtown Ogden is the Ogden Utah Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This beautiful stone-clad building with art glass windows underwent a major renovation that was completed in 2014; this effort has been a driving force in encouraging more redevelopment and beautification in The Junction area.

OGDEN FARMERS MARKET Every Saturday morning from late June through late September, farm-fresh produce takes center stage on Ogden’s Historic 25th Street. Vendors with everything from peaches and pears to corn, lettuce and tomatoes set up shop and exhibit their wares to the public.

Visitors can also find locally roasted coffee and baked goods as well as arts and crafts items. Live musicians and activities for the kids give the weekly event a festival-like atmosphere.

Later in the season, a slimmed-down version of the event known as the Fall

SERVING TOGETHER FOR A STRONG COMMUNITY Weber residents invest their time, talents and funds to improve their community. In 2019, Ogden City was ranked as the number one “Most Charitable Place in America” by Magnify Money/Lending Tree.

Weber County is known for the close working relationship that exists between all sectors of the community: social service providers, nonprofit organizations, government leaders, businesses and local residents.

When a call for volunteers goes out in Weber County, residents respond in a dramatic way. During the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, when the Ogden area hosted several Olympic events, community volunteers stepped up in such an impressive way that a group of local residents decided to capture that volunteer spirit and keep it going. The result is what is now one of the area’s stand-out nonprofit organiza-

tions: the GOAL Foundation.

With its message of “Get Out And Live,” GOAL encourages residents and area visitors to participate in and volunteer at recreational events, programs and activities, helping to create a healthier community economically and in mind, body and spirit.

The GOAL Foundation’s signature event is the annual Ogden Marathon, the 75th largest marathon in the nation in 2019 and a qualifying race for the Boston Marathon.

GOAL has also helped organize volunteer efforts for many major events including the USA Cycling Masters Championships, the Archery World Cup and the XTERRA USA Championships. Thousands of volunteers work together to make these events successful.

County residents are also ready to invest financially in their community, as shown nearly 20 years ago when voters approved

the establishment of a RAMP tax. The RAMP (Recreation, Arts, Museums and Parks) program collects one penny on every $10 of non-food purchases in the county. The money supports local organizations, facilities and events.

Since its inception, the RAMP program has helped build soccer fields, parks, pickleball courts, splash pads and community centers as well as funded hundreds of other projects.

As one of its largest projects, RAMP provided $2 million toward building a $9.2 million, 73,000-square-foot expansion to The Ice Sheet, which served as a venue for the 2002 Winter Olympics. The addition to the facility, now known as the Weber County Sports Complex, added a National Hockey League-sized hockey rink and an indoor practice field.

HONORING WEBER COUNTY MILITARY VETERANS Weber County residents support military veterans. In the summer of 2021, a groundbreaking ceremony was held in Pleasant View city where a veterans monument is being constructed with the goal of honoring former, current and future service members from the area.

The monument will include representation of each branch of the military with names listed of men and women from

Pleasant View who have served, and will serve, in the military in the future.

The project is representative of the collaborative nature of the community with financial participation from government, a non-profit foundation and generous donations, contributions and efforts of area residents and businesses. It is anticipated that the monument will be dedicated by Veterans Day of 2022.

EDUCATION FOR LIFE From preschool to doctoral degrees, from language immersion programs to technical certifications, Weber County has a comprehensive educational system serving all ages and needs. KINDERGARTEN TO 12TH GRADE INSTRUCTION PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICTS The Ogden School District serves the city of Ogden and approximately 11,500 students. It consists of 13 neighborhood elementary schools (K-6), three junior high schools (7-9), two comprehensive high schools (10-12), one alternative high school and one youth in care school.

Two of the district’s elementary schools serve as magnet schools: New Bridge School as a STEM school and Taylor Canyon Elementary with its Advanced Learning Academy. Bonneville Elementary and T.O. Elementary host dual language immersion programs in Spanish. Two other elementary schools house specialty programs: Odyssey Elementary is home to Astro Camp Utah while Shadow Valley Elementary focuses on environmental science.

The district’s two high schools, Ben Lomond High and Ogden High, have a rich tradition of athletic success with a combined

96 state championships across 18 sports.

Weber School District (WSD) covers all of Weber County with the exception of Ogden City. With about 33,000 students, it is the fifth-largest school district in Utah and consists of 30 elementary schools (K-6), 10 junior high schools (7-9) and seven high schools (10-12). WSD has an 89.3 percent graduation rate in 2020.

CHARTER & PRIVATE SCHOOLS In Utah, charter schools are tuition-free and open to any Utah student. They are publicly funded and accountable to the Utah State Board of Education. Charter schools serve students from kindergarten through 12th grade, but not all grades are offered at all charter schools. Enrollment is capped at a certain number at each school; if too many students apply for admission, the school holds a lottery to determine

which students will be admitted.

Some charter schools place an emphasis on a specific subject matter area (such as science) or on a certain instructional methodology. There are charter schools operating in several Weber County cities.

There are also private schools available in the area, both religious and secular in nature, that offer instruction for students from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade.

WEBER STATE UNIVERSITY Located in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains in east Ogden overlooking the Weber Valley and the Great Salt Lake is Weber State University, one of Utah’s premier state universities. Founded as Weber Stake Academy in 1889, the school grew to become a state college, awarding its first baccalaureate degree in 1964. In 1991, the college became Weber State University.

The college offers certificate programs through which students can earn certifications demanded by employers; continuing education courses to help increase job skills; and individualized courses designed to match local business needs with student career aspirations.

McKAY-DEE HOSPITAL McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden is part of Intermountain Healthcare, a nonprofit healthcare system based in Salt Lake City that meets the healthcare needs of people throughout the Intermountain West, primarily in Utah, southern Idaho and southern Nevada. It includes hospitals, clinics, affiliate networks, homecare, telehealth and other services.

Founded in 1910 as a small community hospital, McKay Dee has grown into a

world-class, full-service regional hospital.

SENIOR CITIZEN SERVICES Senior citizens receive a wealth of support through Weber Human Services.

WHS’s Aging Services provides help to seniors like home-delivered meals (otherwise known as “Meals on Wheels”), the Senior Companion Program and preventative health programs.

Seniors can also be connected with service opportunities such as the Retired Senior Volunteer Program or the Foster Grandparent Program. Many Weber County communities also offer programs and facilities where seniors can enjoy classes and special events.

BUSINESS DEPOT OGDEN Business Depot Ogden (BDO) is a premier industrial business park situated on 1,118 acres with excellent access to Interstate 15 and Interstate 84 with easy access to the Western United States.

BDO has more than 12.5 million square feet of warehousing, manufacturing and office space and an additional 225 acres of ground available for new development.

More than 130 unique businesses and 6,500 employees have made BDO their home.

The area was formerly known as the Defense Depot Ogden, a military hub for supplies and transport that operated for 54 years. In 1940, the U.S. Army requested the War Department establish a depot for distribution of equipment to field a force of 500,000 men. Ogden was considered a prime location because of its existing rail infrastructure and its centrality to Pacific, Mexican and Canadian ports.

In under 48 hours, the citizens of Ogden rallied together to raise nearly $100,000 to purchase land and assure the War Department selected their city as the site.

Within months, 41 buildings were under construction. On September 15, 1941, the new Defense Depot Ogden officially opened.

For the next 55 years, Defense Depot Ogden continued to be an important asset to the U.S. military, providing supplies for engagements such as the Korean, Vietnam and Desert Storm conflicts. In 1995, Defense Depot Ogden was closed, and during the next few years, the land and buildings were sectionalized and deeded to Ogden City.

In 1999, the Boyer Company entered into a long-term agreement with the city to manage and develop the facility into the future, creating what is today Business Depot Ogden.

A major economic and quality of life benefit for residents and businesses is easy access between the county and the region’s major cities and surrounding states. Ogden has long been known as the “Crossroads of the West.”

Several major highways converge in the Ogden area and a well-planned transportation grid make Weber County an attractive option for doing business and living near work.

The main transportation corridor along Utah’s Wasatch Front is Interstate 15, which runs through Utah from Idaho to Arizona. Driving time on I-15 from Ogden to Salt Lake City, Utah’s capital and largest city, is 40 minutes.

A notable intersection in Weber County is the junction of I-15 and Interstate 84, an important connector for travelers headed east toward Wyoming and northwest toward Idaho. Heading east on I-84 takes drivers to Interstate 80, a major national east-west artery.

Through the air, Ogden-Hinckley Airport provides commercial flights and aviation services. It is Utah’s busiest municipal airport for private planes, and Allegiant Air offers commercial service from Ogden

As Ogden City looks to the future of its downtown area, it has partnered with UTA, Weber State University and McKay-Dee Hospital to create a Bus Rapid Transit system that will connect the FrontRunner commuter rail system to the university and the hospital.

The 5.3-mile project will enable riders to get to their destinations faster as dedicated lanes for buses are created and buses are given traffic signal priority. Scheduled completion is set for 2022 with the new line expected to spur $550 million in economic development by 2040.

LETTER FROM 2021 CHAIR, KIMBERLI GREEN The idea of people working together for the common good and supporting business success is at the core of credit union heritage. The Ogden-Weber Chamber of Commerce provides organizations like America First Credit Union the ability to engage on many levels. I’m proud to represent AFCU as a Cornerstone Partner within the Chamber and serve as the 2021 Chamber Chair. We’re also proud to have been a Chamber member for 61 years!

Serving these two organizations that I love so much has been a wonderful journey.

We are a large, diverse and dynamic Chamber that continues to experience growth with members representing a wide variety of types and sizes of businesses.

The Chamber provides resources to serve these organizations by reaching potential

customers, providing opportunities to invest in employees through professional development and leadership opportunities, and improving the community through engaging in critical initiatives and legislative activity.

ABOUT THE CHAMBER Founded in 1887, the Ogden-Weber Chamber of Commerce is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing business and community prosperity in northern Utah.

Based in Ogden, the largest metropolitan

area north of Salt Lake City, the Chamber represents 775+ organizations in 15 cities and several unincorporated areas in Weber County.
