Your Visit There are many unique sights to take in when you visit St Albans Cathedral, making it a stunning setting for events, tours and concerts.

Opening Times The Cathedral is open all year round 8.30am – 5.30pm.

Entry is FREE. All donations are gratefully received.

Visitor Highlights St Albans Cathedral is a great place to visit for the whole family – whatever the weather! From the longest nave in England to a jam-packed events programme, there is plenty to see and do.

The Shrine of Saint Alban The Shrine of Saint Alban is a site of national pilgrimage. People have been coming here for over 1700 years and it is used as a place of prayer and stillness by visitors every day.

The Shrine of Saint Amphibalus The Shrine of Saint Amphibalus recently underwent a monumental conservation project and is now back in the Cathedral for all to see. St Albans Cathedral is the only cathedral in the country with two restored medieval pedestal shrines.

The Norman Tower

Our Norman Tower is the only 11th Century great crossing tower still standing in England today. It is also the only cathedral tower in England to be built using Roman bricks.

Be transported back in time as you take in the stunning medieval wall paintings - the best preserved collection in any English cathedral. You can see the wall paintings in the Nave restored to their former glory with unique light projections during Daily Guided Tours.

The Longest Nave in England Enjoy walking the longest nave in England, all 85 metres of it! Take in the artchitecture and atmosphere of this vast space.

The Alban Pilgrimage This June, witness the return of our annual Alban Pilgrimage, as the city comes together to celebrate Britain’s first Christian saint.

Enjoy a wonderful spectacle as giant carnival puppets tell the story of the remarkable man who gave the city its name.

Tudor Summer This summer come to the Cathedral to be transported back to Tudor times, with talks, workshops and interactive performances by some of the most famous names from the Tudor period!

Join us to be transported back 400 years for a summer of Tudor-filled events, talks and performances. You won’t want to miss it!

Tudor Day

Friday 10 June Join us for a special Tudor-themed day, when we will be joined by King Henry VIII from Select Society for a special performance of their new play, Conflict Between the Church & State: An Audience with King Henry VIII. This play is perfect for Year 6 and KS3 pupils.

Conflict Between Church & State: An Audience with King Henry VIII

Saturday 11 June, 10am - 11.30am Travel back to 1542 and have an audience with King Henry VIII as he contemplates the events of recent years which have weighted heavily upon him. His majesty will even invite his loyal subjects to question him on any related subject: a lively Q&A is assured!

St Albans Abbey and the Reformation

On display from mid-June As part of our Tudor Summer programme, our cathedral archive team have put together this exhibition exploring the impact of the reformation on St Albans Abbey.

Tudor Trail

Available from mid-June Discover different aspects of the Tudor era through this self-guided trail of St Albans Cathedral. Taking you to many different parts of the cathedral which have links to the Tudor era and Reformation, this trail will demonstrate how the Abbey was changed during the Reformation and unearth some of hidden remnants from that time.

Storytelling with Tales from the Hart

Tuesday 26 July, 10am - 12noon Start the summer holidays off right and join Tales From the Hart for a feast for the eyes and ears. These storytellers will bring the past to life with some Tudor tales.

Tudor Secrets and Seals | Family Workshop

Tuesday 2 and Saturday 13 August, 10am and 11.45am How did the Tudor’s keep their important messages private? With wax seals of course! Join our Summer Artist in Residence, Georgia Holleran, to make a wax seal of your very own.

Thursday 4 August, 7.30pm, Alban Room A talk exploring aspects of the Tudor era through contemporary Hertfordshire documents. Speaker - Hertfordshire Archives and Local Studies.

Tudor Evensong

Sunday 4 September, 6pm Acclaimed vocal group Pro Victoria return to St Albans Cathedral for this special Evensong. In this service, newly discovered settings of psalms, canticles, and anthems, set to music by composers from the 16th century, such as Sheppard, Taverner, Tallis, and Parsons, will open a window on some of the music and worship known by the Tudor church and court.

Music Music has been central to the life of the Cathedral for centuries. Join us this Summer for a magnificent programme of concerts and recitals.

Brass and Organ Spectacular Monday 2 May, 1pm Prime Brass return with a rousing programme of majestic and inspiring music for brass ensemble and organ, including ceremonial works by Bliss, Hakim, Butterworth and Holst. They are joined by Cathedral Organ Scholar, Dewi Rees.

Colours of France | St Albans Symphony Orchestra Saturday 14 May, 7.30pm Debussy’s Nocturnes paints ‘sound portraits’, of clouds, festivals and sirens with a wordless chorus of female voices. Chants d’Auvergne is a collection of folk songs from the Auvergne region of France arranged for soprano and orchestra. Saint-Saëns’ Symphony No.3 features the mighty Cathedral organ in two of its four movements.

International Organ Festival Organ Recital Saturday 21 May, 5.30pm All are welcome to this free Organ Concert, given by Martin Schmeding, Chair of Artistic Organ Playing at the University of Music and Theatre, Leipzig.

Military Wives Choir Concert Saturday 18 June, 7pm The Military Wives Choirs are celebrating their 10th anniversary.

International Organ Festival Platinum Jubilee Celebration Concert Wednesday 6 July, 7.30pm This unique and thrilling concert of popular and ceremonial music from across the Queen’s reign will feature over 250 performers, with special presenter, celebrated choirmaster and broadcaster, Gareth Malone.

Cathedral Music Trust & St Albans Bach Choir Concert Saturday 16 July, 7.30pm Mendelssohn’s oratorio St Paul is performed by the Cathedral Choir, SABC, and Sinfonia Verdi, and conducted by Andrew Lucas. It tells the story of the life of Paul, a Roman citizen, who persecuted the early Christian Church, until his conversion on the road to Damascus when he became a follower of Christ and apostle to the nations.

Sounds Around The Abbey Concert Wednesday 27, Thursday 28, Saturday 30 July, 7pm Presented by Rennie Grove Hospice Care, these shows will provide a mix of performances from The Jupiter Singers and The London Show Choir, and Brilliant Theatre Arts. All proceeds will go towards providing specialist care and support for adults and children with a life-limiting illness.

Talks St Albans Cathedral is pleased to offer a rich programme of adult learning events designed to explore faith, history and culture from many different angles.

An Introduction to Byzantine Art

Thursdays 5, 19 and 9 May, 7.30pm, Alban Room and online via Zoom Join Professor Tim Boatswain as he explores the fascinating world of Byzantine Art. Spread across three lectures, these talks will delve into the turbulent history of Byzantium and question how such a history shaped the aesthetics and function of the art produced during this time.

The Queen and the Mistress: Female Power at Medieval English Court Thursday 16 June, 7.30pm, Alban Room and online via Zoom Medieval England was a man’s world, but women could and did hold their own power and wealth. Two of the most influential women at the court of King Edward III were his wife, Philippa of Hainault, and his mistress, Alice Perrers. Find out how they wielded their power and used their femininity to control those around them.

Library

Open 10am - 2pm Monday - Friday, and 10am - 1pm on the first and third Saturdays of every month The library at St Albans Cathedral is a modern theological lending library which offers members a wide range of resources on topics such as theology, biblical studies, philosophy and ethics. Located above the Welcome Centre, the library is now fully open for browsing, borrowing and returning books, and private study.

Reading Groups Second Tuesdays of each month, 2.30pm or 6pm The Cathedral Book Club meets on the second Tuesday of each month and enjoys a lively and thought-provoking discussion about a range of different texts.

The Alban Pilgrimage Saturday 25 June, 11am - 5.30pm

Join us for this magnificent procession to celebrate St Alban, Britain’s first saint.

Each year, 12ft carnival puppets, portraying characters from the story of St Alban, march through the streets to reenact the historic events leading up to Alban’s execution. The puppets are accompanied by people of all ages, dressed as many characters, creating a spectacular display of colour and celebration.

On the day

11am Join us for the Alban Pilgrimage - a magnificent procession organised by St Albans Cathedral, to celebrate St Alban, Britain’s first saint. Starting from St Peter’s Church.

12noon All are invited to join our choral Eucharist, with preacher Paula Gooder, Chancellor of St Paul’s Cathedral.

4pm Join us for Evensong, with guest preacher Inderjit Bhogal OBE. This service ends with a procession to the shrine of St Alban, where red roses are placed on the shrine in an act of remembrance.

Pilgrimage Puppets Exhibition

21 May - 24 June, 8.30am - 5.30pm A stunning exhibition of the giant puppets used in the Alban Pilgrimage. As you walk around the Cathedral, see many characters from a remarkable moment in history over 1700 years ago.

Pilgrimage Day Tudor Festival

25 June, 12noon - 5pm Continue the Pilgrimage Day celebrations with an afternoon of Tudor-themed fun on the Abbey Orchard. Meet King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn and try your hand at playing Tudor games with re-enactment group Tudor Legacies, as well as lots of other activities fit for the whole family.

June and July Pilgrimage & Transition Days are a special opportunity for all Year 6 pupils making the transition from Primary to Secondary schools to reflect on their educational journey past, present, and future.

Sunday 5 June, 6pm Join us on the official day of the Platinum Jubilee for a traditional Evensong, with music dedicated to Her Majesty the Queen.

Dedication of the Chapel of St Amphibalus

Friday 24 June, 5pm Following the blessing of the newly restored Amphibalus Shrine last year, during this Evensong we will be officially dedicating the chapel to St Amphibalus, and blessing icons and new shrine furniture that are now in place. All are welcome to this important moment in the life of our cathedral.

Family Fun There are plenty of fun activities, events and interactive experiences to keep our young visitors entertained.

YPPT Puppet Performances Wednesday 4 May, 6pm and 7pm Watch your favourite Cathedral characters come to life as marionette puppets. The puppets have been created by Cathedral volunteers and the shows will be performed by Year 5 students from Mandeville Primary School.

6pm | The Crossing Place A re-imagination of the Alban story and how a mysterious stranger helped Alban become Britain’s first Christian martyr.

7pm | A Grim Day Out Tells the story of Lord Grimthorpe, the Cathedral’s eccentric Victorian architect and how two children showed him what really matters.

Family Discovery Mornings Selected Thursdays Family Discovery Mornings are free events aimed at children during school holidays. They typically include an interactive trail, and arts and crafts activities. This summer, meet the Romans, talk to the Victorians, and hear stories from the Tudors. Come along to experience one for yourself!

Poetry Workshops Summer Term We are delighted with the return of our special Poetry Workshops, suitable for KS2 and KS3. Our professional poet, Elle DillonReams, is a talented Edinburgh Festival Award Winner, and will lead a fun, inspiring 90 minute workshop in the Cathedral, sharing ideas and techniques for finding inspiration, idea generation, and ultimately poetry writing.

Cathedral activities Available daily in our exhibition area, young visitors can enjoy interactive screens to take a look behind the scenes, brass rubbing, and have fun dressing up.

Discover stories from 1700 years of history as you embark upon exciting journeys around the Cathedral on our special tours.

Daily Guided Tours These tours are a great introduction to the Cathedral, its history, and its treasures. Our expert Guides will take you through our rich and varied history, exploring features such as our stunning medieval wall paintings, spectacular stained glass windows, and the shrine of Alban, Britain’s first saint.

Tower Tours

Varying days and times Climb the 211 steps up to the top of the oldest Cathedral tower in Britain and experience fantastic views of St Albans. Go behind closed doors and explore the roof spaces and visit the ringing and bell chambers, before the final climb onto the roof of the tower (weather permitting).

Celebrate HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee by exploring the relationship between the Cathedral and Monarchy, from the founding of the Monastery in AD 793 to the four visits by Queen Elizabeth II. Learn about the royal gifts, endowments, images and anecdotes from over 1200 years of history.

150 Years 2022 marks the 150th anniversary of the discovery of our fascinating Alban and Amphibalus Shrines, the latter of which was fully restored last year.

This year we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the first restoration of the shrines of St Alban and St Amphibalus. It is believed the shrines were broken up in 1540 and hidden in the walls to protect them after the Dissolution of the Monasteries.

They stayed undiscovered for nearly 350 years. However, in February 1872, the Clerk of Works, John Chapple, with the help of the foreman, Mr Jackson, and masons Messrs. Smith and Fisher, discovered over 2,000 fragments of these shrines. Reconstruction began on 16 March 1872. In this anniversary year, as well as marking this remarkable act of restoration, we will be celebrating the finishing touches to the Shrine of Amphibalus, in its new worthy setting, and with its beautiful icons and furniture.

The importance of this anniversary should not be underestimated, as it is probably the first major restoration of a shrine in England since the destruction of the Reformation. In this way, it marks a significant revival of pilgrimage in this country, including our own Alban Pilgrimage.

The Friends of St Albans Cathedral is an independent charity providing financial and practical support to the Cathedral.

We commissioned and paid for the beautiful Amphibalus Shrine canopy, as well as funding the restoration of the Alban Shrine canopy.

The Friends play a vital role in enabling the life and work of our glorious building to flourish and thrive as it has done for nearly 1000 years.

Young People We offer an exciting array of clubs for young people at the Cathedral.

Abbey Tots Tuesdays, 10am, Offa Room Meeting on Tuesday mornings, this popular parent and toddler group is open to all. Come along and join these weekly get togethers with toys, drinks and snacks followed by a little singsong for pre-school children and their parents or carers.

Free, tickets available on our website.

Abbey Tots Service Thursdays, 10am, St Michael Chapel This service for pre-school age children includes Bible stories, songs, instruments, music and prayers, as well as a light picnic for children and their teddy bears.

Free, no booking required.

St Albans Young Singers Mondays, 5pm A singing group for young people aged 6-12 which sings many different styles of music. The group is open to anyone who is enthusiastic about music.
