Visitor Highlights St Albans Cathedral is a great place to visit for the whole family – whatever the weather! From the longest nave in England to a jam-packed events programme, there’s plenty to see and do. The Shrine of Saint Alban is a site of national pilgrimage. People have been coming here for over 1700 years and it is used as a place of prayer and stillness by visitors every day. A new shrine was built in 1308 but was destroyed when the Abbey was closed down in 1539. Pieces from this shrine were used to restore the shrine in 1872 and again in 1993.

Anne Frank + You This January, we welcome a truly unique and thought provoking exhibition to the Cathedral which explores Anne Frank, her diary and the Holocaust. Anne Frank + You includes a life-sized replica of Anne’s bedroom in the ‘secret annexe’ of Prinsengracht 263, offering an experience of her life in hiding. Full details of this exhibition can be found on page 8.

The Norman Tower Our Norman Tower is the only 11th Century great crossing tower still standing in England today. It is also the only cathedral tower in England to be built using Roman bricks. You can explore our tower on one of our Tower Tours, see page 22.

The Shrine of Saint Alban

Easter at the Cathedral This year, Easter Sunday takes place on 12 April as we celebrate the joy of resurrection and the promise of eternal life. Special services and events take place throughout the Easter period to mark this wonderful occasion. Full details of Easter and Holy Week can be found on pages 13-15.

Wall Paintings Be transported back in time as you take in the stunning medieval wall paintings - the best preserved collection in any English Cathedral. You can see the wall paintings in the Nave restored to their former glory with unique light projections during Daily Guided Tours and various Weekend Wisdom Tours - a result of our latest National Lottery Heritage funded project. Anne Frank + You Thursday 23 January - Thursday 20 February

Bringing the messages of Anne Frank into the 21st century. 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz II-Birkenau concentration camp, the death of Anne Frank and the end of World War 2. To commemorate these historic events, the Cathedral is hosting the Anne Frank + You Exhibition in partnership with The Anne Frank Trust UK. This thought provoking exhibition explores the life and modern legacy of Anne Frank through artefacts from Anne’s life and the Holocaust. This special exhibition also includes a life-sized replica of Anne’s bedroom in the ‘secret annexe’ of Prinsengracht 263. Exhibition Opening times

Born Survivors: Three Young Mothers Wednesday 12 February, 7.30pm, Nave

Hear from Eva Clarke, born in the death camp of Mauthausen in conversation with award winning author Wendy Holden, as they tell the extraordinary stories of three young women. Separated from their husbands, all three women passed through the gates of Auschwitz II-Birkenau with a secret but were determined to hold onto all they had left – their lives and those of their unborn babies. 8

Music St Albans Symphony Orchestra - New Year’s Day Concert Wednesday 1 January, 7pm Welcome the New Year with St Albans Symphony Orchestra performing favourite classics in the glorious Cathedral surroundings. The brilliant young horn soloist Ben Goldscheider has been acclaimed a ‘Rising Star’ by BBC Music magazine and ‘One to Watch’ by Gramophone magazine. Lunchtime Choral Concert Monday 6 January, 1pm St Peter’s Chorale, Brisbane, Australia, perform a lunchtime concert. St Albans Bach Choir Concert Stabat Mater Saturday 28 March, 7.30pm St Albans Bach Choir performs Rossini’s Stabat Mater and Vaughan Williams Serenade to Music. Joined by Sinfonia Verdi and conducted by Andrew Lucas. The magnificent Stabat Mater, completed in 1841, with its magical fusion of heartfelt solemnity and devotion with theatrical drama and joyous melodies, represents the summation of Rossini’s art. Maundy Thursday Thursday 9 April Chrism Eucharist, 11am A sung Eucharist, gathering together the clergy and lay ministers throughout the diocese for an act of commitment to ministry and the blessing of the holy oils for use throughout the following year. Sung by the Cathedral Choir.

Maundy Eucharist, 8pm This service includes the priest washing the feet of some of the congregation to recall what Jesus did at the Last Supper. After the service there is a watch until midnight to recall the long agony of Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane that night. Sung by the Cathedral Girls Choir and men of the Cathedral Choir.

The Alban Bun – The Original Hot Cross Bun

On Good Friday the Cathedral will hold a children’s event for all primary school aged children. The event will involve a mixture of story-telling, activities and crafts.

For nearly 700 years, the Alban Bun has been a part of the Easter tradition at St Albans Cathedral. This predecessor of the Hot Cross Bun is said to originate in St Albans, where Brother Thomas Rocliffe, a 14th Century monk at St Albans Abbey, developed an original recipe and distributed the bun to the local poor on Good Friday, starting in 1361.

Easter Eve Saturday 11 April Evensong, 4pm Sung by the Cathedral Choir. Easter Vigil, 8pm The first service of Easter begins quietly in darkness but ends in joyful light and noise. Includes baptisms and confirmations from across the diocese.

Easter Day Sunday 12 April On the Sunday Jesus’ disciples found his tomb was empty, then met and ate with the risen Jesus. The Cathedral hosts many special services throughout the year, reflecting the church year and supporting local organisations.

The Power of Pilgrimage Our exhibition area tells a story which is centuries in the making. See the story of St Alban and the rich history of the Cathedral brought to life in displays and stunning audio visuals. Learn about the monastic Abbey and how the monks created beautiful manuscripts, take an exciting digital tour of the Cathedral today, and experience a year in the life at St Albans Cathedral.

The Feast of the Epiphany Sunday 5 January, 9.30am This special service celebrates the arrival of the Magi to visit Jesus with the blessing of chalk.

There’s also plenty on offer for our younger visitors including brass rubbing, dressing up, explorer backpacks and much, much more!

Oaklands College Exhibition Friday 28 February - Wednesday 4 March Oaklands College students in the Art, Fashion and Design department are excited to exhibit in St Albans Cathedral. The students visited the Cathedral and were encouraged to take inspiration from the building and it’s magnificent history and sketch what they saw. The pieces on display are the result of their visit, which will include rarely seen glimpses of the Cathedral’s hidden spaces. We would like to thank The National Lottery Heritage Fund for supporting the above Exhibitions.

Spring! Thursday 16 April, 10am - 12.30pm There’s no better time to explore the Cathedral than during spring, and this wonderful trail brings animals and nature to life! See what you can find before getting creative with Easter activities. Our FREE Family Discovery Mornings are aimed at children aged 3 - 11. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tree Trails Explore the grounds of St Albans Cathedral this spring with our family friendly tree trail! Discover the history of some of the city’s most ancient trees and find out all about their uses and symbolism. Tree Trails are available daily in the Cathedral Shop for £2.

Tours Discover stories from 1700 years of history as you embark upon exciting journeys around the Cathedral on our specialised tours. Daily Guided Tours These tours are a great introduction to the Cathedral, its history and its treasures. Our expert Guides will take you through our rich and varied history, pointing out features such as our stunning medieval wall paintings, spectacular stained glass windows, and the shrine of Alban, Britain’s first saint. Monday to Friday 11.30am and 2.30pm Saturday 11.30am and 2pm; Sunday 2.30pm Short on time? Then why not join one of our 25 minute Highlights Tours which take place every day at 1.05pm. Tower Tours

These candlelit experiences are a rare chance to be transported back in time and explore the stories of the medieval Abbey. During the evening you will meet the men and women, monks and pilgrims to whom this great Abbey was a home and a centre for learning and worship.

Climb the 211 steps up to the top of the oldest Cathedral tower in Britain and experience fantastic views of St Albans. Go behind closed doors and explore the roof spaces and visit the ringing and bell chambers, before the final climb onto the roof of the tower (weather permitting). Saturday 4 April

Weekend Wisdom Tours Explore deeper into a special feature of the Cathedral with an experienced guide. Tours are every second Sunday of the month at 1.30pm and last 30-60 minutes. Simon de Montfort and England’s First Revolution Saturday 8 February, 2.30pm, Alban Room In 1258, a band of nobles seized power from King Henry III (as described by the St Albans chronicler, Matthew Paris), and Simon de Montfort, Earl of Leicester, soon emerged as leader of this radical movement. This talk explores this turbulent period, and how de Montford would transform the revolution into a holy war, fighting and dying on the battlefield as a sworn crusader. T.S. Eliot: Hope in the Wake of Devastation Wednesday 11 March, 7.30pm, Alban Room The senselessness of the First World War had a profound impact on Christianity’s place in western life.
