Welcome to the Alban Pilgrimage 2024

Join with us for this dramatic re-enactment of Alban’s martyrdom, as we retell the marvellous story that has given our city its name.

Alban is arrested | St Peter’s Roundabout

Here we step back in time 1700 years and to our Roman city of Verulamium. We learn how Alban opened his home to a refugee: a Christian priest fleeing persecution. This generous and risky act of shelter led to Alban’s new faith but also put him in danger with the authorities.

The Trial of Alban | St Albans Museum

From the balcony of our town hall, the Roman magistrate tries Alban for sheltering a stranger and cross examines him. Alban boldy declares his new faith and is sentenced to death. We are then treated to the miraculous spring of water bubbling up at Alban’s feet.

Alban is put to death | West End of St Albans Cathedral

Follow us to the site of Alban’s execution as we witness the beheading of Britain’s first saint and martyr. By making this journey, we continue a long tradition of pilgrimage stretching back well over a thousand years.
