One of the nice things about St Aidan’s, when I went there, was that it was a relatively small school …there were only 50 girls in my year 12…so I had the opportunity to try my hand at many activities- from debating to sports, foreign languages to cooking, and singing the lead (male) role in the school musical- without having to compete against too many other girls. It was great!

By offering this multitude of opportunities for personal development, St Aidan’s helped me build a strong sense of mastery, self-confidence and optimism, and I entered the real world unafraid to give anything a go. I doubt I would have agreed to host a state-wide pharmacy talkback show on ABC radio in my third year out of uni had I not had such a positive sense of infinite possibility from my school days.

Some of my other achievements include: • Launching Australia’s first drug information hotline for the general public in 1995, called The Queensland Medication Helpline (QMH).

• 1990-2006: hosting weekly medication talkback segment on ABC Radio which was broadcast nationally from 1997-99.

• Winning a Churchill Fellowship in 1999, which funded travel to USA, Canada and UK to investigate international trends in consumer drug information services.

• In 2002, transforming QMH into a national service called The Medicines Line, which supports the broader community as well as other services such as the Kids Helpline, Poisons Information and 13Health.

•Winning Australian Pharmacist of the Year in 2002, awarded by the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia •Graduating with my Doctorate in Clinical Pharmacy in 2005, the University of Queensland’s second ever recipient of this degree.

•Since 1990, I have enjoyed appearing on various radio and television stations as a “drug expert”. I currently write for several pharmacy magazines, consult to “Prevention” magazine, host national satellite TV broadcasts for the Rural Health Education Foundation, appear occasionally on ABC Radio, and have a weekly segment on Vision Radio FM. •And of course, having my daughter Rebecca in 2003.

She’ll be going to St Aidan’s.

Violinist Chinese violinist, Nancy Tsung has concertized to much public acclaim in the United States, Taiwan & Australia. Embarking upon the musical scene in Taiwan in the late 1980’s, following the invitation of the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan to hold the concertmaster position, Ms. Tsung has continued to collaborate and tour in the multiple roles of an accomplished soloist, concertmaster and chamber musician, with ensembles, conductors and performing artists from Europe, Asia, Canada and the United States.

Ms. Tsung is a graduate of The Juilliard School, where she received the Doctorate of Musical Arts degree as well as Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in music. Studies at Juilliard were undertaken with Dorothy DeLay and Hyo Kang; chamber music studies were with legendary chamber musicians Felix Galimir, Claus Adam, Lillian Fuchs, the Juilliard String Quartet and Jacob Lateiner. Ms Tsung has performed as soloist on numerous occasions with The National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan, Amadeus Chamber Orchestra of Poland, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra in Australia, Aspen Baroque Orchestra, Aspen Concert Orchestra, Contemporary Chamber Orchestra of Taipei, Kaohsiung City Symphony and Fu-Jen University’s Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Tsung has ongoing solo collaborations

with Yin-Qi Chamber Symphony, the String Chamber Orchestra & Symphony Orchestras of the Taipei National University of the Arts.

Ms. Tsung’s broad musical interests include not only performing the standard repertoire, but also advocacy for the voice and music of past and present. Ms. Tsung has been invited to present world premiere performances of contemporary works for violin & piano, as well as works for violin & orchestra. In October, 2006, Ms. Tsung performed Hsu Po-Yun’s new work “Heart”, at the Shanghai Oriental Arts Center to much acclaim.

Teaching since the late 1980’s, Ms. Tsung is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of musicians. In 2002, Ms. Tsung was honored to have a student invited to participate in the First Perlman Music Program in Shanghai. Many of the graduates of Ms. Tsung’s class are well established members of the symphony orchestras, music school faculty members, and freelance musicians in and around Taiwan. Ms. Tsung currently teaches violin performance & chamber music classes at the Taipei National University of the Arts, and is blessed to be the mother of five young children. In 1997, Ms. Tsung was awarded the 38th Chinese Cultural Medal for Outstanding Performance in Music.

My years at St Aidans had a tremendous influence on me – from kindergarten through to senior school. It was a well rounded education to equip the students to be independent to pursue their dreams. My interest in art was encouraged and I was given a wonderful grounding in art by Mrs Browning.

After leaving school I worked as an interior decorator and colour consultant before marrying and living on a wheat farm at Jimbour.

Moving to Bundaberg with 3 young children, restoring a 100 year old home and running a market garden gave me little time to paint.

After seven years we moved to Brisbane to give the children a good education, booking the girls into St Aidans - of course!

After working as a medical receptionist on Wickham Terrace for four years, it was time to return to my interest in art. In 1979 I established Burwill Gallery and Jindalee Framing & Art Centre. During this time I was commissioned by CSIRO to paint a range of botanical paintings for the covers of their annual reports. The Jindalee business was sold after eleven years and I established Park Road Gallery Milton along with a business called Art Lease.

As I had worked as a gallery director for fifteen years it was time to focus on my own painting career. My first solo exhibition was called “Pumicestone Passage” sponsored by Network 10 at the Brisbane Hilton Hotel, which resulted in a sell out exhibition.

The experience of painting and traveling to outback regions of Australia and being involved in joint exhibitions in Darwin and Katherine led to another solo exhibition “Coast To Coast” at the Riverside Centre Brisbane. Part of the proceeds of these exhibitions went to charities such as The Women’s Hospital and Ronald McDonald House. The works are represented in private and corporate collections throughout Australia and overseas.

Now living on the Sunshine Coast I have been involved with nine other artists in the Sea View Gallery at Moffat Beach and more recently have been painting for my own enjoyment going on location with other artists and working on site.

I now have four lovely grandchildren and love spending time with my family and friends.

The Senior School at St Aidan’s was very small when I was at school, which gave the girls attending opportunities to participate in many different activities, both cultural and sporting. We were always busy.

Scouts, and I am currently a member of the Board of the Olave Baden-Powell Society, which is the philanthropic arm of the World Association.

This active participation has carried with me through my life. I was actively involved in the schools which my children attended as well as in other organisations. I was fortunate during my time at St Aidan’s to be appointed School Captain, which gave me the opportunity to develop leadership skills. These experiences have carried me through my life and are the basis of all I have achieved.

I enjoy the challenges which are presented to me in my current role, especially when it is involved with working with girls and young women in developing countries of the world. We are so fortunate in Australia to have the opportunity for everyone to be educated, and enjoy the basic amenities of life, such as clean water. My work with the Girl Guide Association now gives me the chance to see if we can ensure that every girl in every country of the world gets these same opportunities.

I became involved with the Girl Guide Association because of my daughters’ involvement, and achieved the positions of State Commissioner of the Girl Guide Association of Queensland and then later the Chief Commissioner for the Girls Guides Association of Australia. I have continued my involvement with the Girl Guide Association, becoming a member of the Asia Pacific Committee of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl

In 1992 I was honoured to become a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in recognition of the work I had done in Community Organisations. I am still a regular deliverer of Meals on Wheels, and also I am a member of our local Red Cross Branch.

I believe it was the ethos of “Service to Others” which was instilled to me during my time at St Aidan’s will always be with me.
