From the Principal

For more than 96 years, St Aidan’s has stood as a place where young women are nurtured to grow as authentic, caring, confident, creative, connected young women.

We have an ethos which is built on a foundation of faith, care, and belonging, and this continues to shape every aspect of school life.

Recently, our Chaplain, Reverend Sister Gillian Moses, reflected on the many ways St Aidan’s ‘shows up’ as a school. Her words reminded us that we are, above all, a compassionate and caring school family. This is evident not only in the daily interactions within our school but in the enduring impact of generosity that spans almost a century.

One powerful example is the bursary awarded in 1992 to alumna Kirsten Baker (née Chambers), whose story is shared in this edition of Impact of Giving. That single act of giving changed the trajectory of her life and, in turn, has influenced the lives of those around her. Gifts to education extend far beyond the immediate moment; they shape futures, strengthen communities, and inspire generations.

In 2026, we are proud to build on this legacy by introducing new scholarship opportunities across our Junior and Senior Schools. These scholarships will open doors for students to achieve their academic potential, pursue athletic excellence, and harness their music or cultural talents. Importantly, they will also provide access for students from rural and regional areas through the recently announced St Aidan’s Creeth Endowment Scholarship, ensuring that distance and financial

At Foundation, our mission is to encourage a culture of philanthropy, and given our whole school philosophy is based on the values of the Society of the Sacred Advent (SSA), this is where I celebrate the blessing the whole school community receives from the humble, yet generous spirit in which giving occurs.

A Legacy of Learning and Love: Beth Howard’s Enduring Gift to St Aidan’s When Beth Howard graduated from St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School in 1946, she carried with her not only academic excellence but a passion for scientific inquiry that would define her remarkable career. Her journey from the classrooms of St Aidan’s to the research laboratories and remote field stations of Australia stands as a testament to the transformative power of education—a gift she would ultimately return to her old school in extraordinary measure.

From St Aidan’s to Scientific Pioneer Beth Howard thrived during her years at St Aidan’s, excelling in both sciences and the arts. The school’s progressive approach to girls’ education, championed by the Sisters of the Society of the Sacred Advent, encouraged Beth to pursue her intellectual curiosity without limitation. This foundation proved pivotal as she embarked on a distinguished career in scientific research.

Beth’s dedication to scientific research led her to follow Professor of Physiology, Victor Macfarlane to South Australia to continue her studies and research at the University of Adelaide. Conducting vital research on animal physiology with direct applications to understanding how both livestock and humans could survive and function in Australia’s harsh conditions, particularly in central regions. Beth’s research focused

on water and electrolyte balance in sheep, studying the effects of heat and intense solar radiation on animal bodies under extreme environmental stress. During summer vacations, Beth and her colleagues Ron Morris and Victor Macfarlane travelled to Toorak station near Julia Creek in central Australia’s Mitchell grass country, where they conducted groundbreaking field research in one of the continent’s most challenging environments— enduring intense heat and solar radiation while studying how livestock adapted to arid conditions.

Beth’s expertise in body water estimation and animal physiology made her an invaluable mentor to emerging researchers. Her meticulous approach to scientific investigation and generous spirit in training others left a lasting impact on the scientific community. This combination of rigorous intellect and genuine care for others reflected the values instilled during her St Aidan’s

The transformative power of bursaries

A story of Resilience and Gratitude Bursaries and scholarships represent one of the most powerful investments in a young person’s future, delivering benefits that extend far beyond financial assistance, with outcomes that are profound, enduring, and often intergenerational.

St Aidan’s Alumna and bursary recipient, Kirsten Baker (née Chambers, 1994) credits St Aidan’s for inspiring her career in nursing, explaining she entered a profession that requires compassion and support for people, all of which she says she received at St Aidan’s.

“St Aidan’s also gave me a belief that I can achieve anything, anytime,” Kirsten says.

Kirsten joined St Aidan’s in Year 7. Her childhood was typical, until the age of 13, when her family experienced a car accident seriously injuring her father, the sole income earner in their family.

This event led to her father becoming a quadriplegic, and family life changed overnight. Kirsten’s family experienced emotional upheaval, financial strain, and the ongoing navigation of caring responsibilities.

“This was a very difficult time for us; there was a lot of trauma and sadness. Our normal life was gone and there was a new narrative being played out. Dad was in hospital for 12 months.

My mother did her best to provide everything our family needed, but financially it was a real struggle for her.”

Kirsten understood her family could not sustain private education fees, and she remains grateful to have been a recipient of a bursary at St Aidan’s from Years 10-12, and said she is thankful to Headmistress at the time, Ms Trish Evans.

“I felt nurtured at school, and I don’t think I could have completed my education anywhere else. Even though it was difficult to balance the reality of my home life, at school I was allowed to shine and be me. Best of all, I received guidance and direction.”

“My memories of St Aidan’s are happy. They are filled with fun, friendship, and education,” she says. “I remember the Sisters who taught us in my earlier years, my Headmistress and my teachers. I also cherish the friendships I formed and the community who wrapped around me, especially the mothers of my friends.”

As she reflects on her younger years, Kirsten says her feelings about the bursary have matured, and she remains grateful for the effect the St Aidan’s community has had on her life.

“It changed everything for me, and has continued to influence my life, my career, and even my children.”

Kirsten says she has a strong belief in the importance of education. “I have continued to give back not only through nursing, but also by educating our future nurses in their tertiary studies. I have spent time living in Remote Western Australia, assisting our First Nations people to have the skills and training to provide quality care to their communities.”

Kristen added, “I also developed an education program for Aboriginal mothers, assisting in improving outcomes for children from birth to four years, which is still being delivered in the Western Australia Kimberley region.”

“If I could speak to a young person going through hardship, I’d say: Keep going, look for the bright side of things, stay connected with your community, finish your foundation (education) and when you’re ready, you will fly.”

Karen Spiller Fellowship: Empowering Research for Girls’ Education The Karen Spiller Fellowship honours the legacy of Ms Karen Spiller OAM CF, Principal of St Aidan’s from 2000 to 2017, by providing staff with opportunities to undertake research that benefits girls’ education. The Fellowship supports projects aligned with the School’s strategic plan and the ethos of the Society of the Sacred Advent.

Girls’ Empowerment Self-Defence Project inspires St Aidan’s Leadership Program

Indigenous Perspectives in Mathematics Education

As the inaugural recipient, Ms Koh conducted groundbreaking research into empowerment self-defence programs for females. Her study included literature reviews, trials of commercially available programs, and consultation with 53 past students. The research revealed that effective programs integrate physical selfdefence with awareness training, boundary-setting, and verbal strategies as part of a whole-school approach.

With 100% of parents surveyed agreeing the programs were beneficial, Ms Koh’s work has laid the foundation for a school-wide empowerment curriculum and ongoing student leadership programs.

Ms Grant focused on embedding authentic Indigenous perspectives into mathematics education, supporting St Aidan’s Reconciliation Action Plan. The Fellowship funded her attendance at the AITSIMA Mathematics conference in Nhulunbuy NT, strengthening her knowledge and contributing to her Lead Teacher portfolio. Working with Dr Chris Matthews, Ms Grant and four teachers trialled activities incorporating Indigenous understandings— from Year 1 patterning to Year 5 shapes in Indigenous architecture—demonstrating that mathematical knowledge informed by culture enriches learning for all students.

Developing an Independent Study Culture

Finnish Early Childhood Education

Ms Lee addressed the need for enhanced senior student support while fostering independence for external exams and university. Her research explored peer-to-peer learning using the Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire with Years 10 and 11, interviews with graduates, and school visits across Queensland, interstate, and New Zealand. The project incorporated student voice while strengthening inter-year connections and developing independent learning capabilities.

Ms Stanley’s research explored Finland’s renowned education system through a Study Tour of traditional forest schools in Tampere. Observing children learning outdoors in all weather, engaging in play-based learning and risk-taking activities, Ms Stanley discovered an educational model rooted in trust, autonomy, and holistic development. The Finnish approach nurtures curiosity, resilience, and lifelong learning—principles that resonate deeply with St Aidan’s vision. Her work will equip the St Aidan’s community with fresh insights to enhance teaching practice across the community.

Volunteer Program

Building a Culture of Giving: St Aidan’s Year 10 Certificate in Active Volunteering “Volunteerism is the voice of the people put into action. These actions shape and mould the present into a future of which we can all be proud.”

In 2025, the School introduced a Certificate I in Active Volunteering as part of the Year 10 Skills for Learning program, embedding service into the fabric of student life.

The program requires Year 10 students enrolled in the certificate to complete 20 hours of active volunteering, with flexibility to work with community organisations, support local initiatives, or contribute to school events. This breadth ensures every student finds meaningful ways to serve that align with their interests.

The impact extends beyond individual service hours. Students develop empathy through direct exposure to community needs, build leadership skills through real-world experiences, and establish service as a lifelong habit during these formative years. Whether tutoring younger students, supporting environmental causes, or assisting with school initiatives, Year 10 students enrolled in the Certificate are discovering that true education happens when we step outside ourselves to serve others—

Annual Giving

St Aidan’s Annual Giving Overview At St Aidan’s, our annual giving initiatives strengthen our community while enhancing educational opportunities for all students. Through two key fundraising touchpoints, we unite families, alumni, and friends in support of our school’s mission.

Our annual Day of Giving brought our community together for 24 hours under the theme “For Her.” In 2025, we successfully raised $207,461 from 262 generous donors, surpassing our $200,000 goal. Donations on the day were matched by generous community members including Foundation Directors and Staff. Funds raised will support our centenary vision for continued campus development and the growth of our Scholarships Program, ensuring a St Aidan’s education remains accessible to deserving students. The year of 2025 demonstrated the power of collective commitment to our students’ futures.

The Tuition Fee Raffle engages current families through an exciting opportunity to win $32,000 credited toward the following year’s tuition fees. In 2025, we sold 490 tickets, with the draw taking place at our Friends and Futures Lunch. The Boughton family won this year’s coveted prize.

Every dollar raised through these programs has a direct and lasting impact on our students and facilities. We are deeply grateful to all who participate, reflecting our shared commitment to educational excellence at St Aidan’s.

Building Fund As we look ahead to our Centenary in 2029, St Aidan’s is poised at an extraordinary moment, a chance to honour the values that have shaped us while imagining the future for our students. In 2025, much of our work took place quietly in the background: undertaking considered community consultation, engaging specialist consultants, aligning Leadership, Council and Foundation – to ensure the structures are in place to progress our bold Masterplan vision.

These efforts have positioned us to embark on the next phase of our Masterplan, with many exciting plans launching in 2026. Designed with both today’s students and tomorrow’s leaders in mind, the Masterplan reflects our commitment to academic excellence, wellbeing, Extra-Curricular opportunities and our deeply connected community.

We are proud to signal that the groundwork is nearing completion and an exciting new chapter is about to begin.

Sporting Excellence Scholarships support aspiring state and national-level athletes, helping students to balance elite sporting commitments with their studies. These athletes become role models for determination and discipline, while representing St Aidan’s at the highest levels of competition.

Our Creeth Endowment Scholarship provides students from across Queensland access to a St Aidan’s education, removing distance and financial circumstances as a barrier to opportunity. These students bring unique perspectives that broaden horizons and strengthen connections across Queensland communities.

Beth Howard Scholarships provide early support to promising Junior School students at a crucial stage of their educational journey. Whether they have an interest in music or are showing unique potential in science, this scholarship nurtures future leaders during their formative years.

Scholarships don’t just benefit the individual student - they provide lifelong and generational impacts, while also adding value to the St Aidan’s community, with a diverse student body that prepares all students for an interconnected world.
