Minister’s letter
September 2020
Hello, I am Brenton. Some people call me Brent. Some people have been known to call me Ben – there’s a story behind that, but I’ll save it for another time. The surname is a bit trickier: Prigge. It’s originally German, so the final ‘e’ is pronounced. I suppose if you imagined the final letter as an ‘a’ you would probably say it correctly – or pretty close. I’m quite used to it being said wrongly anway! Right, that’s the name out of the way. A bit of background: I was born in South Africa, the eldest of four boys, and had a very happy early childhood growing up in a very small village in the hills of Kwazulu Natal. We then moved to Port Shepstone 3
on the East coast of Kwazulu Natal for my high school years, and that too was a very happy time – and the beginning of my love for the sea. I left school wanting to be an Archaeologist, and actually completed a Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. However, by the time I graduated, God’s call on my life had become so persistent and relentless that I could no longer hide or run - and believe me I had been digging in my heels for some time. That’s a long story in itself, and again I hope to get the opportunity to tell it some time. Alongside Archaeology, I had done three years of Biblical and Religious Studies as my other major, and so I decided to do an honours degree in Biblical Studies instead of continuing with Archaeology. After university I had to complete a year of compulsory military training. Most South African males at the time were conscripted straight out of school, but I had deferred this for my studies. I was sent to Oudtshoorn to complete six months of officers training with the infantry, and after graduating as a Second Lieutenant, was posted to a command post in Durban. It was here that I met Ann (another great story waiting to be told), who had just qualified as an Enrolled Nurse. Ann and I went on to get married, and we have two daughters, Carla and Kristin, who are now in their twenties and continue to live in Perth, Australia. They each have their own wonderful stories, and my own story is of course full of stories of them! But back to the short version of my story… 4
As I began the process of candidating for the Methodist Ministry, beginning with Local Preachers’ Training and Studies, I took up a job as a full time Youth Pastor at Westville Methodist Church, near Durban (Carla was born during my first year here). Three years later I was stationed as a Probationer Minister at Valley Methodist in Pretoria (where Kristin was born), and three years later again I was sent to Lichtenburg, a small rural town in the North West Province. I was ordained on 13 August 2000, and a few years later was stationed at the Discovery Methodist Church in Roodepoort, Johannesburg for five years before moving to Sea Point Methodist Church in Cape Town for two years. Throughout my ministry, I have always maintained a particular passion for ministry with children, young people and families, and in latter years this focus has developed into a desire to facilitate better intergenerational connection and relationship in churches – not only in the way we worship together, but more fully in the way we ‘do church’ and ‘do life’ together as faith communities within our wider communities. So when a colleague in Australia told me the Uniting Church in Western Australia was forming a specialist team to intentionally resource and equip congregations to be more inclusive of young people and children – not as a ‘side’ activity of the congregation, but as an integrated part of the whole of the life of the congregation – I sent in an application, and a year later, on 17 March 2009, my family and I emigrate to Australia. We spent 9 years in Busselton, Western Australia, 5
before that particular role ended, after which Ann and I moved to Brisbane, Queensland, on the other side of the continent for two years. During that time my ministry with children and families was deepened through the use of Messy Church and Godly Play, and I have become very passionate about both. I have served a number of years as a Messy Church regional coordinator and have qualified as a Godly Play Trainer and hope to continue to be engaged in both these areas here in the UK. But how did we end up in the UK, you might well ask! In February last year, Ann came to visit her sister and mother in Minehead, Somerset, and there began to new adventure as Ann began to realise that she really wanted to live closer to family again. For 28 years, she has moved wherever my ministry took us. She was asking me whether it might be her turn for a change! So here we are. I have been accepted to serve as a ‘Recognised and Regarded’ Minister in the Methodist Church from 1 September and am really looking forward to ministry in the Plymouth and Devonport circuit. I have actually been in the UK since 7 March, serving half time with the West Somerset Circuit Staff in Minehead, which has proved very interesting given that lockdown began at the end of my very first week on the team! Zoom and YouTube instead of services in church buildings, staff meetings and circuit meetings by zoom, and hundreds of hours on the telephone to members instead of home visits. It has been a time of learning new things! What else can I tell you about myself? I love reading. I also really, really love reading. I normally have three 6
or four books on the go at any given time. When I am not reading in my spare time, you would be likely to find me playing my guitar and writing songs – my guitar is in a box in storage after having travelled over in a sea container, and I am really looking forward to unpacking it and putting it to use soon. I also love nature, and in particular bird watching. Ann and I have already been exploring the Somerset area, and have been expanding our birding ‘life list’ and can’t wait to do the same in Devon. Other hobbies include Scuba Diving (a huge passion), photography (including underwater photography) and Sea Kayaking. I have also been known to tread the boards in amateur dramatics, so who knows? Perhaps post-Covid-19, coming to a stage near you…. I look forward to meeting you, whether that be in person, or if that is not possible, by phone or Zoom! Ann and I are really excited about starting this new chapter in Plymouth. May God bless you, hold you, keep you and smile on you. COMPTON METHODIST CHURCH REOPENING FOR MORNING SERVICES = SEPTEMBER 2020 1)
Following a meeting of the Compton Church Council and completion of a risk assessment by our COVID 19 team, we now feel it is appropriate to re-open for services in September 2020.

Due to social distancing we can only accommodate 30 people, and we would ask that you attend church on the following alternate Sunday’s during September. Please let me know if you WILL NOT be attending (Tel: 01752 318511) so a slot can be offered to another person:Sunday 6th September ; Sunday 20th September (At present we have only included September dates, as the situation might change in the future)

We regret we are unable to hold Sunday evening services at the present time as the building needs to be quarantined for 72 hours, before it can be used again.

Following advice from the Government and the Methodist Church, the following will apply when attending church services until further notice:COMPTON METHODIST CHURCH COVID 19 GUIDE FOR ATTENDANCE a)
You should not attend if you feel personally at risk and certainly not if you are showing signs of the virus, however mild.
b) Services will last no longer than 30 minutes c) No singing will be undertaken

Entry and exit from the church will be segregated (please enter via the main entrance and exit via the front side door I.e. nearest the hall)
e) Face coverings must be worn whilst inside the church f)
Hand sanitiser to be applied upon entry and exit

Upon entry Individuals to record their initial surname and telephone number for ‘Test & Trace’ purposes (please bring your own pen)
h)
Offertory to be placed in the plate on the table at the back of the church

Church bibles will not be available, we suggest you bring one from home

If you need to use the toilet please use the disinfectant wipe (provided) to wipe surfaces after use

Stewards will be on hand to ensure social distancing is adhered to at all times

Please remain in your seat at the end of the service, and await the steward’s guidance on how to exit the church safely

Sunday at 6.30pm Rev. Terry Higgins will be taking an evening service on the lawn at the bottom of the church. Bring a deck chair (and an umbrella!! - though the present forecast is good); and if you want a flask of coffee or whatever just for yourself. (If you have seen the new plan you will see that it was supposed to be Delarre Irving on this Sunday, but she will be taking - if it happens - the service on the 13th). At present it is not possible to hold evening services inside the church in accordance with Government and Methodist Church guidelines. The church needs to be quarantined for 72 hours after every time it is used.

A message from Phil I hope everyone is keeping safe and well and that you are coping with all the restrictions that we have to adhere to as we go about are daily lives in this post COVID world. It is hard to believe that we have been away from church for nearly 6 months, during which time we have a new minister (welcome Brenton) and a new roof ! On behalf of the church family at Compton I would like to extend a warm welcome to Brenton (and Ann) and look forward to his ministry as we continue our walk with the Lord. I would like to thank Nigel for his overseeing of the roof project during the last 2 months, and I must say the wait has been worth it. A very professional job and a big thank you to the contractor for adhering to the prescribed completion date. Thanks go to all the stewards and church council who have been working hard behind the scenes to prepare for the possible re-opening of the church in September (e risk assessments; building checks; attendance guide; revised worship area layout just to name a few !) Hopefully by the time you read this we will have had our first service since lockdown (albeit in a different format) I would ask everyone to take time and read the article ‘Precautions for Opening the Church’ contained in this magazine, so you are familiar of what to expect prior to you future attendance at church. I have tried to keep in contact with most of you during the lockdown period but please accept my apologies if I have missed anyone. Thank you also to all our pastoral visitors and everyone else who has contacted members of the church family whilst we have been closed and has ensured Compton’s love and fellowship has shone through. Precautions for opening the Church in September 2020 If you have any Covid-19 symptoms, or suspect you have been in contact with anyone who has the virus, PLEASE DO NOT COME TO THE CHURCH, and inform Phil or Lesley as soon as possible. What you need to bring: Face mask, own drink if needed, own bible, own pen to sign attendance sheet. (We must keep a record of all who attend.) We are required to wear face masks in the building. What to expect: A very warm welcome, but sadly no handshakes or hugs. The vestibule sectioned off to make an entrance and an exit. Hand sanitising points on entry and exit. Register of people attending the service. A one way system operating around the Church. Limited number of chairs arranged, socially distanced. If you are a couple, please draw 2 chairs together. 14
Sadly, there will be no hymn singing. Prayers should be spoken quietly. It will be a short service. At the end of the service, exit the building follow the signs, using the gel on leaving.
Lunch Club: I have really missed cooking for you all. At the start of 2020 I planned a VE Day tea party and a dinner for Donna, but sadly it wasn’t to be. I hope that by next we year the restrictions will be eased and we will be able to resume the Lunch Club, and plan some sort of celebration when the whole Church can gather together. Lesley
Pigeon Holes: Would you check your “pigeon holes’ at the back of the Church - there are various bits and pieces that have been uncollected since lockdown.
Church Cleaning: We no longer have a Church or Hall cleaner. The Church Council is considering employing someone, but until the appointment has been filled I am looking for volunteers to clean the Church once a week. I have approached several people who have agreed to help, but a few more willing helpers would be most appreciated. You will work in two’s, following a cleaning schedule, paying particular attention to wiping surfaces/door handles etc and all materials will be supplied. If you think you could spare 2 hours, mid week every other month please see me and I can give you more details. CONT… 15
CONT/. Email addresses Do we have your email address? If at all possible we would prefer to contact you by email, especially as we start the slow process of opening up the Church again this September. If you haven’t given us your email address please contact Phil Lemin (phillemin@blueyonder.co.uk) We will of course continue to contact those who do not have email by phone or letter. Covenant Service Sadly there will be no covenant service at the start of this month. We will keep the government guidance under review and have this special service when we can all worship together. Harvest Festival This year to accommodate the whole church, there will be 2 Harvest Festival services. The first will be on Sun 27th Sept and the second on Thursday 1st October, for the other half of the fellowship both at 10.30 am when we hope to be collecting as usual for Shekinah, the Food Bank and the Methodist Charity “All we can”. More details about how we can safely donate later this month. Jam’s and Pickles I have been busy during lockdown making all the usual preserves. Obviously we wont be able to socialise after worship for some time, so if you want any bits and pieces let me know and I will get them to you. I have made Loganberry Jam, the 3 sorts of chutney/pickle - Marrow, Runner Bean, and Green Tomato. Any donations as usual for Church Funds. Thank you. Lesley 16
Update from Monica As the lockdown progressed a few of us have continued meeting for a walk, originally on an impromptu basis. We started with Widey Woods and around Crownhill Fort. It was a good way around the outside and a huge construction, you can’t help marvelling at all the time and effort it must have taken. A quicker walk was taking a little pathway at the bottom of Blandford Road (opposite Spire Court) that led to the bottom of Efford Lane, partly through Channel Park Avenue where I noticed some beautiful specimen of Echeum (very tall blue flowered spike often seen in Cornwall) in a particular garden. We continued through Trefusis Park, back up past the church for tea and biscuits in the garden when two other members happened to join us. Another area visited was Central Park where I had not been for years and was pleasantly surprised and especially with the unusual selection of trees. On the walk old memories were reawakened as we passed certain buildings or a particular road. Now that things have moved on it has generated into a weekly walk and can usually find a little café to have some lunch, so it has developed into an all day event. There are now four of us most times. After a walk at Wembury, we sat at the little café outdoors for lunch. A wren was feeding its young and had to fly right past us and into a hole in the wall, something you don’t always get to see. Other walks have included Yelverton Airfield, Cawsand to Cremyll and a small section of the coastal path from Hannafore to Polperro. While walking the weather was good and the views were beautiful, but it absolutely poured with rain on returning to Hannafore. We eventually found shelter in the Hotel and enjoyed a nice meal. It didn’t really clear after that so we caught the bus to Polperro for a rather exciting journey in the front, up the top hitting all the low branches 17
and rounding down into fields with long drops int the fields. The most recent walk was from Yelverton to Long Ash Garden Centre where they were only serving cakes and drinks but enjoyable all the same. On returning to Yelverton we decided to hop on the bus to Tavistock and enjoyed another pleasant hour in a café before returning home. It’s good to be walking but it is the opportunity to see and experience all the things along the way and the chance to have time for conversation where we learn about each other and even about ourselves! Scout’s Update Over the last three months all sections have been meeting on Zoom, Activities have been the following:- Quizzes, cooking, model making games, weekly challenge, We held a sleep out in the young peoples gardens, this was a sponsored sleep out and raised £1,300 for the homeless people in Plymouth. There have been over 500 badges gained by the young people since the lock down. The last night of term all sections met together for a rely good knees up evening, the highlight of the night when Tim Kidd the Chief commissioner for Scouts from H/Q paid us a visit on Zoom and presented the young people with their Awards. Looking to the future we have now gone from red to Amber meaning that we can meet outdoors in pods of ten with a leader, it will be great to be able to use our camp site at Shaugh Bridge again. Duke of Edinburgh's Award group we congratulate Kirsty Wates on gaining her Gold Award. Nigel Norris. GSL. and DofE leader.

A message from Ken Greetings, I hope everyone is well and keeping safe at this time. I think we can see the end of the tunnel at last, but I think it will be a long time before it’s back to the way things used to be. It is good we can get back to our church service, albeit to be a shortened version. The thing during this time that I found most heart-warming is the way people have been helping in so many ways. From our wonderful N.H.S; the volunteers who have been looking after those who could not leave their homes, and food banks that have been run off their feet. It’s also wonderful how people have been turning to the Bible and turning to church services on the internet. When this is all over, may we see our church filled with people all praising the Lord. I think my faith is so much stronger for having been through this time. To God be the glory. God bless you all. A personal message from Karen It is good to be able to communicate with you all as one again. It has been a long six months, what with watching the Covid-19 figures rise and fall back, self-isolating; shielding; home deliveries and lock-down along with the loneliness and loss of fellowship, it has been a difficult time for many. Praise God for the means of communication we have in place: the telephone; letter-writing; texting; email and all the internet has to offer through on-line services: Zoom; Facebook and YouTube, for example. I think lock-down would have been so much more difficult just 10 - 20 years ago. In many ways God had prepared us for this time. Can you imagine relying solely on letters, telephone calls and the generosity of friends and neighbours, many of whom like you were shielding or self-isolating? An unpleasant time in many ways but a time of blessing; God lived it with us, never leaving us alone or in need. He rearranged our lives so we would be able to cope, He ensured everything we needed was in place and friends and neighbours were close at hand. I feel for the families who have suffered bereavement through Covid=19; the front-line workers who have kept services running, the food and retail industry workers who continued throughout lock-down, I praise God for their training, ability and determination to bring people through this pandemic, often at cost to their own families. You see, I believe God did not leave us to fend for ourselves, he has been with us in every situation we faced, constant, even in our darkest times. 21
Now, almost six months since churches were told to close, we are beginning to find a new normality. At the time of writing, services are being planned, they will be shorter with limited congregations, no singing, set guidelines to follow about distancing and sanitizing. This is a positive move looking to the future and towards complete re-opening. Our decision about returning to fellowship is a personal one. We all have different circumstances to take into account. You may have to look out for other family members, need to shield them or yourself due to age and/or medical conditions. I personally have chosen not to return straight away, I am anticipating January. This is due to my Grandson having major facial surgery (14/9/20) in Bristol. My mother, lives in a Care Home where visiting is by appointment with only one visitor a week to each resident allowed, (I recently saw Mum in an open doorway, two metres apart where she became chilled), also there is still no visiting at the hospital, taking these factors into account, I do not feel that it is right in my circumstance to attend church at this time. I will continue with the notices and Compton News, articles would be appreciated for the November/December edition. The last date for submission is 18th October, details as to how to get them to me are inside the front cover of this magazine. Meanwhile, I pray you will all stay safe, keep well and if appropriate for you, enjoy returning to Sunday Services 22
at Compton and although strictly distanced, some sort of fellowship together. Remember, whatever your situation, God is with you, He loves you and knows everything about you. He is your helper, provider and refuge. Lean on Him, rest, knowing His peace. May God bless and keep you in His love. Karen

Time for a heart to heart talk with Jesus? 28
Prayer Pointers Praise and thank God for bringing us safely through the Covid-19 pandemic, thus far, that we might re-unite with friends and family, albeit socially distanced and wearing masks. Praise and thank God for all those who gave of themselves and continue to look after others throughout these testing times: NHS staff; Key workers; Emergency staff; Carers; Job Centre staff dealing with new Benefit claims, Teachers and Admin. Staff; local voluntary workers involved with shopping, deliveries, prescription collecting; friends, neighbours and the Government having the huge responsibility of our welfare to carry. I am sure there will be many others to add to our list of prayers. Thank God for the provision made for the homeless and pray the positive action of Councils will develop further to save more lives throughout the coming winter. Praise and thank God for the completion of the new Church roof and safe arrival of our new Minister, Rev. Brenton Priggge. Pray for those who are currently unwell and/or shielding to protect themselves or family members. Pray they will feel loved and supported during this time of uncertainty and the love of the Lord will help them overcome their fears; depression/anxiety and lonliness etc. Pray regarding the USA election, countries overwhelmed by Covid-19, areas of the world in lock-down, both at home and abroard. Keep in mind the schools re-opening, ofiices and businesses adjusting to new working guideliness; the newly unemployed, those struggling with young families and debt. Pray for peace and order in all countries of our world. Continue to pray for the Church activities that have been suspended during Covid-19; think of those who joined us in 29
fellowship through the Short Mat Bowls, Coffee and Craft, Film Club and the Lunch Club. Pray for people who show a new interest in their local church having been tested by the last six months of self-isolating; shielding; loss of employment and/or family members etc. For Compton to be a place of refuge for those seeking to experience JESUS, his love and grace for themselves, that we will be ready and able to support them in their time of need. The church is in need of people to take on some challenging roles as we move forward. People are needed for the IT and sound desk; someone to be responsible for advertising, another to manage the website; musicians. Within the church there is a role for everybody, from Prayer Warrior to welcoming people and being a friendly face. Some jobs can be very much hands-on, whilst others can be managed from the comfort of your own home. Please pray asking God what your role may be. God could be calling you out of your comfort zone, He has a ministry for all of us, seek Him and His will for you.
