Theatre dramatizes life by compressing time, space, and action.
One of the many reasons Tuesday with Morrie is successful, as both a novel and a play, is its masterful reduction of a 20-year friendship into 90-minutes. The play strips away the mundane of everyday life (all external characters are reduced to offstage references or voiceovers) and exposes those rare moments of connection where love, understanding, and humanity remain central, even transformative.
It is important to understand that Tuesdays with Morrie was not an immediate commercial success. It was rejected by most major publishing houses and its reviews were widely mixed until public opinion and Oprah’s Book Club set it on a record setting course with nearly four years on the New York Times Best Seller list and over 18-million copies sold making it the #1 Best Selling Memoir of all time. Audiences knew what experts didn’t...that a genuine glimpse of human connection would always outweigh commercial success.
The lessons of Morrie Schwartz are universal. “Love is a rational act.” We should all be so lucky to prioritize similarly.
