Caulk’s Field House
The Battle of Caulk’s Field On the night of August 30, 1814, this land became part of the American story. Here, on the high ground of Isaac Caulk’s farm, Lt. Col. Philip Reed and Maryland’s 21st Regiment confronted British forces led by Captain Sir Peter Parker during the Chesapeake Campaign of the War of 1812. Despite being outnumbered, the Maryland militia held its position. Parker was mortally wounded and the British withdrew, securing a significant American victory only days after the burning of Washington. More than two centuries later, what makes Caulk’s Field extraordinary is not simply what happened here, but what remains. The battlefield survives as a remarkably intact historic landscape, recognized among Maryland’s bestpreserved War of 1812 sites and included along the Star-Spangled Banner National Historic Trail. The fields, contours and rural setting that shaped the battle remain largely recognizable today, creating an uncommon physical connection between the land and the events that unfolded upon it. Few properties can claim a place in American history. Fewer still preserve the very landscape upon which that history was made. Caulk’s Field is more than acreage. It is an irreplaceable piece of the American landscape; a property whose significance is measured not only by its scale, agricultural productivity and sporting attributes, but also by its enduring place in the history of a nation.
