E

ach year, as the fall season begins, the number one question I receive is, “How is the year starting off?”

The truth is, the energy and commitment I’ve seen this year are genuinely inspiring.

Our Cadets are impressing me daily with their drive for excellence in every area — academic, spiritual, and personal. It’s their commitment that is the heart of our community.

My favorite part of the day is Formation, the time we come together to pray, say the pledge, and recite the Cadet creed. It’s where we celebrate each other and deal with hardship together. During Formation in the first week of school, I set the tone and culture for the year.

The theme of the year is to “Live with Purpose.” Every school year offers a fresh start, a clear new beginning. But this year, we are challenging our Cadets to do more than just start fresh. We are asking them to make intentional choices every day.

MISSION Our mission — to develop boys into men of character — is our promise to our students, our families, our community and the world.

We accomplish this through the transformative power of an educational and life experience deeply rooted in Catholic faith and traditions, academic excellence, military leadership, and an all-male environment.

• Impact vs. Intent: We’ve discussed that intent matters, but impact matters more. The phrase, “I never meant to hurt you,” never lands well. That’s why I encourage our boys to follow not just the Golden Rule, but what I call the STA Rule: Treat people the way they want to be treated. Living with purpose requires us to constantly think about the effect our words and actions have on others.

• Authenticity & Acceptance: I shared with the boys a simple truth I saw on a t-shirt: “If you live for others’ acceptance, you die with their rejection.” The reality is, your sons are already accepted — by Christ, by me, and by our dedicated faculty and staff. This acceptance, however, is a call to grow, to become stronger, more courageous, and more authentic men of character.

Purposeful living means becoming your true self, anchored in faith and integrity.

This year, our community has also faced moments of challenge and grief, including standing in solidarity with Annunciation Catholic School. Living with purpose means standing together in times of suffering and wonder. We choose compassion over division, and unity over fear.

As we begin this year, I have three simple expectations for your sons, all rooted in purposeful living: 1. Expect the best from yourself. Demand excellence in academics, athletics, faith, and friendships.

2. Listen to those who are here to help you. Teachers, coaches, and parents want you to succeed.

3. Be Kind to one another. Brotherhood begins here. Build it every day.

Purposeful living means knowing that every choice reflects not only on the Cadet, but on their family, their school, their brothers in formation, and everyone who came before them. And this applies to us, alumni, parents, faculty, and staff, as well.

We, too, must act with intentionality and integrity.

n recent years at Saint Thomas Academy, one old local saying particularly rang true: Minnesota’s two seasons are winter and construction. Just consider: • The renovation of grounds and classrooms from 2021 onward (Saber, Fall 2021) • The ice arena overhaul (Saber, Fall 2024) • The baseball program’s new Bennett Kotok Cages (see page 3)

While some projects remain ongoing, the Saint Thomas Academy and Visitation School communities heaved a huge sigh of relief and felt a sense of closure at the August 6 ceremony officially opening the Center.

There could be no more poetic justice than Chip Michel ’67 — who so boldly threw his financial resources and soul into fundraising for the venue — finally throwing his body into the pool!

With roughly 400 people at the ribbon cutting, Michel’s speech captured the spirit of the event: “I am thrilled to see the completion of this beautiful new aquatic center.

While it bears our family’s name, this facility reflects a community that prioritizes opportunities for kids to

build physical, emotional and social skills that will shape their lives for years. My four years on the swim team were the most formidable years of my life and resulted in some of the most profound experiences and friendships of my life.”

Event participants included scores of legendary Cadet swimming figures, including Tom Malchow ’95 (with his Olympic Gold Medal) and Coach John Barnes, recent winner of his 15th State Championship at the Academy. Even Joe Mauer, the Twins Hall of Fame catcher, joined in the celebration, as his father-in-law, John Bisanz ’67, who was a close teammate of Michel’s.

New Batting Cages Honor Bennett Kotok

The tragic passing of Cadet baseball captain and catcher Bennett Kotok ’23 has given rise to the Bennett Kotok Cages. The community that loved Kotok, who also served as Class President, rallied to preserve his memory and inspire others in the most meaningful way possible.

“We wanted to memorialize him,” said Varsity Baseball Head Coach Bobby Thompson ’14, “and one of his favorite things to do was hang out at our old cages and talk with his teammates. It’s special to be able to remember Bennett this way. We see his name every day.”

The cages are double the size of their predecessors, so two or three teams can practice there at once. Moving them up

the hill from the diamond lets more players practice even during games, Thompson said. “This is probably one of the nicest outdoor cages in America.”

Getting the facility built was a labor of love, and among the leaders was Jason Dobis, whose son J.D. ’24 was a pitcher, batterymate, and close friend of Kotok’s. All told, the community raised $236,000. Contractors, moved by the project’s origin story, contributed additional time and materials. Design elements include lights, turf, a plaque honoring Kotok, and a Bible and rosary placed into the cement.

“I think the Twins would like to play here,” said Saint Thomas Academy Director of Facilities Anne McQuillan.

Weeks later, Anne McQuillan, Director of Facilities, reflected on the culmination of her legwork among all the concerned parties, including The OPUS Group (contractors), Fabiano Designs (architect), and ICS (owners’ representative on the project): “Just standing there, seeing this gorgeous building, and seeing Chip dive into the pool gave me the feeling that this was always meant to be. I was so filled with gratitude to have worked side-by-side with OPUS, ICS, and Fabiano.”

The quality of the venue speaks for itself and the values of the community that built it.

While the Center will host both Saint Thomas Academy and Visitation School swimming and diving events in an environment befitting the schools’ glorious histories in the sport, the venue also holds significance for the future of both schools and the community as a whole.

Insofar as the Catholic Athletic Association also uses the pool, it will draw those students and their families as prospective Cadets and Blazers.

The Michel Aquatic Center, 14,000 square feet of sheer beauty, contains all modern conveniences and throwback elements that harken to the Academy’s history in the sport, such as the large banner collection that Coach John Barnes and others accumulated over the decades. The quality of the venue speaks for itself and the values of the community that built it.

McQuillan amplifies that voice: “Saint Thomas Academy continues to keep the traditions we value — the whole student experience — while constantly bringing our facilities to state-of-theart. That sends the message that we keep students and alums engaged. We really care about students, families, and alums and try to see things through their eyes.”

NEW FEATURE!

Highlights from the STA Archives This is the first in a series of articles highlighting STMA & STA history through artifacts. Some of the items are important because they depict unique moments — others represent traditions that have been carried on through generations. Sports artifacts often combine both of these important reasons.

Athletes have signed balls and other contest-used memorabilia for more than a century.

Sometimes they were just an attractive way to feature an autograph, sometimes they were presented to honor a particular individual, and sometimes they commemorated an important victory or achievement. As we conclude the 2025 fall sports season, we chose to feature three signed footballs — separated by ninety years.

1933

The oldest of these treasures was recently donated to the Academy and dates from the 1933 season. It was signed by members of the team immediately after the first game of the season against St. Paul’s Harding High School and was given by the team captain to a girl from Harding. The Cadets won that game and ended the season with a record of 4-3-1. Among the signers were one of the first Jewish students to attend the Academy and four who later joined the Armed Forces and died during World War II. Among these was Bill Tooley, who graduated at the top of his class in 1935.

He joined the STMA faculty in 1940 and soon after entered active military service.

He was captured by the Japanese in the Pacific and spent two and a half years as a POW. Unfortunately he was on a POW transport ship on December 15, 1944 when it was accidentally bombed by American aircraft resulting in his death.

1975

Fifty years ago, in 1975, the separate championships for Catholic schools were ended and Saint Thomas Academy joined the Minnesota State High School League. The team posted an undefeated record on their way to the Class A championship. (There were five classes at the time: labeled AA, A, B, C, and 9-Man.) The ball is not autographed, but was simply painted to celebrate their spectacular entry to the State High School League.

The most recent ball is in the collection of Head Coach Travis Walch and commemorates the Academy’s sixth appearance in the Prep Bowl championship game. The Cadets lost a heartbreaking overtime game to Chanhassen 34-31.

Players signed with a Sharpie marker instead of pen and ink like in 1933, but took similar pride in their accomplishments and being part of the team. Which of these players will make their mark on the community in the years to come?

The Saint Thomas Academy archives are currently under the care of social studies teachers Mr. Hoverson and Mr. Simmons. We are particularly interested in unique items that tell the story of the Academy and its students. Artifacts do not need to be one hundred years old to be interesting — future Cadets and the community will be just as interested in recent decades as we are in the years prior to the move to Mendota Heights. cadets.com

How to Keep Ireland’s Promise

he Ireland’s Promise program, which harkens to the origin of Saint Thomas Academy, recently completed its second year of closing the educational opportunity gap that exists along socioeconomic lines. Open to rising sixth- through ninth-graders, the program named for Archbishop John Ireland promises to deliver on his vision for equality.

“After serving as a chaplain in the Union army during the Civil War, Archbishop Ireland became interested in boys’ education,” explained John Buethe ’05, the Academy’s Vice President, who oversees the program.

“He wanted a school that could draw on the discipline aspect of the military, and when he founded Saint Thomas Military Academy, his focus was on Irish and German immigrant kids. He wanted to provide a rugged experience to build character and prepare them for the professions while their parents were working in the trades.”

In keeping with Ireland’s vision, Buethe said, “We want to be a place to serve all boys. Ireland’s Promise offers middle-school boys from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds the opportunity — free of charge — to take real Saint Thomas Academy classes and have those go onto their transcripts.”

Started with a donor’s $50,000 seed-funding gift, the six-week program comprises three hours daily in academic classrooms (math for the first three weeks and English Composition for the next three weeks). Students earn two semesters of coursework on their transcripts.

One program participant, Ashton Cook, eighth grader at the Twin Cities German Immersion School), explained how all those program components impacted him. “The other students were nice. They are smart and good learners. After the summer, going back to school, what I learned in the program made my regular school feel easier, and I think it will make high school feel easier. I would 100% recommend Ireland’s Promise to others.”

Such impact and the students’ enthusiasm appeal to Academy teachers who work in the program, Buethe said. “Our faculty love teaching these classes. They find it rewarding and enjoy seeing the Academy live out its mission. These students have to apply for the program, and they’re high aptitude students, but their families just don’t have the resources to afford Saint Thomas Academy, and they see it as out of reach.”

The program requires minimal commitment from families to enroll their boys in the Academy. “We don’t want to poach students from our middle-school partners,” Buethe said. “But we do want to provide students with pathways into our high school, and we want to ameliorate learning loss from the pandemic and other factors. We’re fine with these boys going elsewhere. We still will have lived out Archbishop Ireland’s mission.”

One challenge in making the program as robust as possible is recruitment from non-traditional feeder communities for the Academy. To help solve for that, Buethe brought in Jenny Honan Abarquez.

Recently retired from the Marine Corps after 17 years, Honan Abarquez’s credentials include a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Family Studies from Penn State University as well as current work in social services focused on youth development and access with Roots Wellness Center and Canopy Roots.

Her main charge over 18 months as Ireland’s Promise Program Coordinator is identifying feeder schools and youth organizations that are home to likely recruitment candidates. Honan Abarquez estimated that she has worked closely with 25 schools and organizations, including many Catholic schools, The Sanneh Foundation, Beacons, and Denden Youth Development Association of Minnesota, an Eritrean community group.

“I love how accessible this program is to families,” Honan Abarquez said. “Ironically, one of the main obstacles is that some parents are worried that it is too good to be true.”

Of course, funding is also an issue, one that Buethe hopes alumni can help solve. “This doesn’t run if we don’t have the dollars,” he said. “I would love to see us serving 20 students per year. It’s critically important to our mission and what we were put on this Earth to do, and I beseech the community to support it.”

What Master Sergeant Matthew Silsley Did Over Summer Vacation

I

f you think you struggled through the “dog days” of summer last August, just consider what Master Sergeant Matthew Silsley experienced. The Saint Thomas Academy Military Leadership Instructor quite literally endured dog days on August 16 and 17, wearing a 40-pound suit to protect him while provoking and fending off German shepherds and Belgian malinois as part of a Protection Sports Association (PSA) trial conducted at the Academy by the Twin Cities PSA Club.

Silsley is a certified decoy in the PSA, one of the most challenging and fast-growing competitive dog sports in the country. He tests the dogs during unpredictable, real-world scenarios that combine advanced obedience drills with realistic protection situations.

PSA competitions highlight highly-trained, well-controlled working dogs and foster a strong, respectful bond between each dog and its owner/handler. The sport “encourages training rooted in fairness, discipline, and structure,” Silsley said, “values that align closely with Saint Thomas Academy’s own principles.”

The four-day training Silsley took to become a certified decoy helped him become “not just a punching bag” but a skilled tactician in “tricking the dogs into biting us when they are not yet supposed to, and then absorbing the impact, and catching the dog safely.”

According to PSA educational materials, well-trained decoys don’t “just ‘take the hit.’ They control the scene, protect the dog, and set the stage for success. It’s a demanding, athletic role that blends safety, psychology, and precise timing. And it’s what allows PSA to push boundaries while keeping the dogs safe, happy, and thriving.”

The August event drew 20 competitors and about 100 spectators from Minnesota and as far away as Illinois, Wisconsin, and Tennessee. On each day of the event, Silsley spent six hours in his suit. On August 16, it rained heavily, causing many slips and falls, while August 17 was a typically hot, muggy Minnesota summer day. Both the rain on day one and Silsley’s sweat on day two made the suit considerably heavier than its normal 40 pounds.

The early part of competition focuses on obedience, “testing the dog’s will to not bite,” Silsley said. “If they pass, they move on to the protection portion of competition.”

For such a serious and potentially dangerous competition — dogs occasionally pierce the bite suits and can leave decoys bitten and bruised — the sport’s culture cadets.com

embraces humor and humanity. The dogs’ names are over-the-top vicious or frightening (Chaos, Devil) or the exact opposite (Dumpling). To tie into Minnesota as The Land of 10,000 Lakes, winners received a plaque featuring a faux walleye and verbiage alluding to a theme of “10,000 bites.”

Between that camaraderie, the danger, and everyone’s desire to see the dogs and their handlers succeed, “a lot goes through our minds,” Silsley said. “I have to think about how to let the dog catch the bicep of my left arm, unless I’m working with a leg dog. We run at each other, and I have to present the limb, catch the dog’s impact and momentum, run with the dog biting me until I’m told to freeze, and safely lower the dog with vocal pressure and physical pressure.”

The experience also impacts the decoys emotionally.

“If the dog bites when it’s not supposed to, the feels are like, ‘Sorry,’ to the handler, but it’s a great feeling when the dog succeeds, and we do a lot of high-fiving with the handlers.”

In other words, if Silsley has his way, every dog has its day.

The Academy’s Own “Intern John” is Now a Boss

T

eachers and faculty never know when and how they will impact students. Sometimes the smallest off-hand remark makes all the difference.

For John Cerrito ’07 — now known as the award-winning radio personality and best-selling stand-up comedian Intern John — that moment occurred one morning when, “The great Dave Ziebarth stopped me in the hallway and asked me when I was going to stop being average. He and Bill McCarthy helped me understand that at Saint Thomas Academy, I could not fly under the radar.”

These days, Cerrito couldn’t fly under the radar even if he wanted to. In September he had both of the top two rated comedy albums on iTunes: Chuey Forever: The Album (a fresh drop named for his dog who had passed away) and Intern John: The Album (a November 2024 release). Add to that his honors as The Baltimore Sun’s 2023 Best Radio Host, 2024 Best Podcast, and in 2025 both of those honors, plus Best DJ and Best Instagram.

If that sounds like Intern John is giving Howard Stern a run for his “King of All Media” crown, the Cadet goes about his business with much more humility. Regarding his Baltimore Sun honors, Cerrito said that he never set out for awards, “but it is a cool validation, because it means people relate to me.” And, of course, he joked that during the voting, “the Midwesterner in me was not paying attention and was just doing his job.”

But seriously, folks, his first album and supporting standup tour raised more than $100,000 for Fisher House Foundation, a non-profit that funds the pursuit of higher education for children of servicemembers who died in the line of duty. The latest album, in honor of Chuey, supports Warrior Canine Connection, which “enlists recovering Warriors in a therapeutic mission of training service dogs for their fellow Veterans.”

Right down to Cerrito’s role as an assistant hockey coach at Washington, D.C.’s Georgetown Preparatory School, it’s easy to see how the variety of influences at the Academy brought Cerrito to his current level of success.

He lived the Cadet experience fully, playing football, serving on student council and Honor Guard, and working for the Citation. “My senior speech was about how football made me realize I belonged at the Academy,” he said. “Z taking me under his wing was key.”

Others he cited, along with comedic asides, include Tony Kinzley (“Need that man’s skin care routine, because he doesn’t age”), Joe Seidel (“Very positive dude), and Chad Abbott, another of his football coaches and a longtime KFAN executive, who aided Cerrito’s radio career.

Additional highlights included his brother Tom ’09 attending the Academy, and he said, (possibly with tongue-in-cheek) performing a stand-up comedy act for the first time at Formation, “not receiving a single demerit in four years,” and “being in at least one class with every single one of my classmates and still being able to look at a class photo and name all of them and which classes we had together.”

From the Academy, Cerrito started his radio career as an intern at KDWB, showing up at his interview for The Dave Ryan Show in his Cadet uniform. While earning his degree in business administration from Augsburg University, he served as the show’s assistant producer.

From there, he took Des Moines by storm as music director at KKDM. By 2012, Cerrito had moved to the D.C. market to co-host The Kane Show, and has been flying solo in the morning drive-time slot since 2020.

The famed comedian Pete Davidson helped Cerrito launch his stand-up career. His acquaintances include Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber. Roughly 1.2 million listeners daily tune into iHeart Radio’s Hot 99.5 for Cerrito’s format of phone calls, pop culture commentary, and “being a distraction from everyday life.”

Simply, he brightens people’s morning, just like Dave Ziebarth did for him.

Academy News EAGLE SCOUTS SENIOR BENNETT NIENTIMP For his project, Bennett Nientimp built and installed “Bennett Benches” at Our Lady of Grace School. These benches are designed to promote friendship among students by providing a space where children can sit if they are looking for someone to talk to or play with. Similar initiatives have proven successful in other schools, but these benches hold a deeper meaning. Each bench is dedicated to the memory of Bennett Kotok ’23, an alum of Our Lady of Grace and Saint Thomas Academy who passed away suddenly in 2024. Bennett was a remarkable friend known for his kindness and compassion. He was a leader, mentor, and captain who inspired many, including Nientimp. These benches symbolize Bennett’s values of friendship and leadership.

Twelve Cadets helped Nientimp build and install fourteen benches. He raised $15,000, which allowed him to build benches for the entire OLG campus. Nientimp is grateful to the Kotok family for allowing him to complete the project in Bennett’s honor. He is also thankful for the generous donations from OLG and STA community members who donated to help make the project happen.

SENIOR DANIEL “ELI” AMENUVOR For his Eagle Scout project, Daniel “Eli” Amenuvor of Troop 9207 Rosemount spearheaded a comprehensive effort to repair and improve the grounds of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rosemount. Eli organized a team of volunteers to meticulously remove an old, deteriorating retaining wall that needed replacement. Demonstrating commitment to community and sustainability, Eli arranged for the reusable old blocks to be donated to a local resident for their own landscaping needs.

Following the removal, the team successfully constructed a new, durable retaining wall, significantly enhancing the church’s curb appeal and structural integrity. This substantial project demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment, leading to Eli successfully passing his final Eagle Board of Review in August.

NATIONAL MERIT SEMI-FINALISTS The National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) annually recognizes high-achieving high school seniors who have demonstrated exceptional academic ability. Semifinalists are selected based on their scores on the PSAT/NMSQT. This year, seniors Alex Golnik (right) and Adam Remick were named as semi-finalists.

GRANDPARENTS DAY On September 25, we welcomed grandparents to campus to spend the morning with their grandsons.

Grandparents were able to see campus, meet teachers, watch the Crack Drill Squad perform, and listen to a STA History presentation from Mr. Hoverson and Mr. Simmons. Grandparents and grandsons also celebrated Mass, and attended the Upper School Pass in Review. Frank Russomanno served as the guest of honor in the Pass in Review.

MIDDLE SCHOOL HOUSE CAPTAINS House Captains were recently named for the Middle School.

The House System develops leaders among the students, while strengthening bonds between grade levels. There are six houses, made up of students in grades 6, 7, and 8. Each House is guided by two faculty members. Elected student leaders are House Captains, who strive to provide opportunities for all students to lead.

BASEBALL

Cadets Baseball was led this year by captains Charlie Probst ’25, Leighton Gates ’25, Jac Wright ’25 and Head Coach Bobby Thompson ’14.

They had a great year finishing 13-12 on the season with notable wins against Simley and Centennial, and ending the season with a team batting average of .301.

Their season ended in a hard fought loss against Simley in the section 3AAA final.

This was the teams 6th straight section final appearance. However, baseball isn’t over for Seniors Jac Wright ’25 and Andrew Most ’25; Wright will be heading to play at University of Wisconsin - La Crosse, and Most will be heading to play at St. John’s University.

TENNIS

Cadets Tennis had an incredible season and one for the Saint Thomas Academy Tennis record books. They finished 18-4 overall and 8-0 in conference play earning their first outright conference championship and undefeated conference record in 30 years. This year’s success was led by captains Britton Jarpe ’25, Will Bonfe ’25, and Drew Lindstrom ’26. The team’s season ended in the section semifinals where they lost to East Ridge; however, Braxton Spata ’27 and Drew Lindtroms ’26 seasons weren’t over yet. Lindstrom and Spata won the individual Section 3AA tournament for doubles. They went on to play in the Individual State Tournament and finished top 8 in the State. Next year’s team will be led by captains Drew Lindstrom ’26, Finn Ganje ’27, and Braxton Spata ’27.

GOLF

Led by Captains Freddy Walther ’25 and Phillip Ebner ’26, the Cadet Golf team had a great season. The team finished 2nd out of 9 teams in the Metro East Conference and 2nd out of 12 teams in the Section 3AAA. Elliot Stevens ’28 represented the Cadets competing as an individual at the AAA State Tournament.

The Team is very young, and will return all but one starter from this year, so the future is bright for Cadets Golf.

The Cadets Track & Field Team had an excellent season, taking first place in two of their five regular season meets. The team won the Section 3AA title from a field of 12 teams for the fourth consecutive year. From the Section meet the team sent 11 athletes to the State AA Track Meet, competing in a total of eight different events. Cadet Magnus Melhoff ’26 had an impressive PR at the State Meet, throwing the discus to earn a ninth place finish. The 4x400 meter relay team, composed of Kayden Greeley ’26, Grant English ’26, Luke Cierzan ’25, and Grady Junge ’27, also earned their spot on the podium — placing seventh. This year’s team was led by captains Vincent Audette ’25, Luke Cierzan ’25, Kian Farooq ’25, David Ogungbe ’25, Todd Rogalski ’26, and Marshall Wright ’25.

LACROSSE

Cadets Lacrosse had an amazing season closing out with an impressive record of 13-3. Their season came to a close in the Section 3A final, where they fell to East Ridge. This year’s team was led by captains ALL-SECTION 1ST TEAM Max Candon ’25, Mike Kelecic ’25, and • Max Candon ’25 Luke Hudson ’26. Aidan Smith ’25, • Luke Hudson ’26 Liam Gotsch ’26, and Luke Hudson ’26 worked • Luca Pedri ’26 hard on the field, but also in the classroom, earning • JP Marx ’26 the Academic All-State Honors. Some other Notables ALL-SECTION 2ND TEAM on the season include Max Candon ’25 being • Charlie Miesterling ’26 named a Mr. Lacrosse finalist (10th in the state), and Luke Hudson ’26 surpassing 100 career goals and 150 career points. Max Candon ’25 will continue his lacrosse career next year playing Division I lacrosse at St. Joseph’s University. Current Senior Luke Hudson ’26 is also committed to play Division I lacrosse at Bucknell University. The Impact of Your Investment We achieved extraordinary momentum across all fundraising initiatives, culminating in a total fundraising exceeding $6.9 Million for the year. This success was powered by a 10% increase in donors, reaching 2,206 total supporters — a powerful indicator of a community deeply invested in the future of our Cadets.

This incredible total was achieved through $1.3 Million for the Aquinas Annual Fund, over $1.0 Million generated by our 60th Annual Community Gala, and $3.4 Million in vital restricted gifts. Furthermore, we strengthened our future by adding another $1.2 Million to the STA endowment, bolstering our financial bedrock for future generations.

Every type of gift is critical to our mission. While restricted gifts and endowment contributions provide the vital resources for long-term security and major strategic initiatives, it is the power of unrestricted giving — through the Aquinas Annual Fund and our Community Gala — that remains the Cornerstone of our daily operations.

These flexible funds ensure every student experience is fully funded, cover emerging needs, and provide much-needed financial aid scholarships. HAMES ALUMNI AWARD The Hames Alumni Honors Award recognizes alumni who have exemplified the ideals of Saint Thomas Academy while distinguishing themselves in their communities. Honorees are chosen for their advancement of the goals of the Academy and for enriching the lives of those around them through professional and civic leadership, intellectual and cultural pursuits, and human welfare activities. Class Notes 1950s Bridging the years: While working at the Veterans Home for their Senior Service Project, JACKSON SKAGEN ’25, DREW RYAN ’25, and TEDDY KENNEDY ’25 connected with JOHN PAULET ’53.

The boys were able to visit with John and his family.

John shared stories with the boys about his time in the Navy following the Korean War and the fond memories he has of his time at STMA.

1970

CRAIG ANDERSON ’61 is celebrating his 78th year on stage playing President Franklin Roosevelt in the musical Annie at Pequot Lakes Community Theater, beginning September 18.

MIKE O’CONNOR ’53 recently had dinner with his long time grade school and STMA “bestie” DONALD L. PATES, JR. ’53, who was in town from San Diego. They were also joined by Don’s little brother, Archbishop Richard Pates (retired). Everyone is still doing well!

1960s JOHN PALDA, SR. ’60, retired from his business career in 2001 and has been enjoying his freedom in Williams Bay, WI ever since!

Sixty years ago, in March of 1965, as a sophomore at Georgetown University, PETER MATLON ’63 had the honor of participating in the civil rights march from Selma, Alabama, to Montgomery, the state’s capital. The goal was to demand that all citizens, both black and white, could vote freely. It was an unforgettable and transformative several days for Peter. It was also impactful as only five months later the Voting Rights Act was signed into law by LBJ. Last month, Peter was able to return to Selma to celebrate the historic march’s 60th anniversary. Peter stated, “The memories that came back were vivid, inspiring and emotional. God willing, I plan to return for the 70th jubilee.”

JOE FEIDT ’68 is partnering with the Minnesota Historical Society Press to publish a memoir narrative nonfiction book on the early days of disc (frisbee) golf titled, Forrre!.

Joe is working on the manuscript this summer aiming for a fall 2026 publication. Joe played a lot of disc golf with the late DENNIS “DOC” O’CONNELL ’68.

1970s Congratulations to BILL FOUSSARD ’72 and Rudy’s Red Eye Grill at The White Bear Country Inn for being voted this year’s #1 Best Patio by the Saint Paul Pioneer Press readers!

DAVID HOTTINGER ’85, BOB SLATER ’77, and Dave Ziebarth (former STA faculty and coach) got together and went fishing last week. Check out their haul!

It was just announced that TIM MURNANE ’77, President and CEO of Opus Group, will retire in 2026.

1980s Congratulations to JOHN NICHOLS ’80 on being named the 100th President on MDRT!

As Hockey Coach GREG MONAHAN ’81 has been known to say, “at Saint Thomas Academy, Tradition Never Graduates”, and in keeping with that mantra, Mono and MARK MCKASY ’86 continued their summer breakfast tradition with STA Hockey Alumni before they depart to continue their hockey journeys. In attendance were: JACKSON HALLUM ’21 (Vegas Golden Knights camp), JARED WRIGHT ’21 (LA Kings camp), and MAX NAGEL ’22 (Colgate University).

MATTHEW NOVAK ’82 retired from the United States Army Reserves in September 2023 after serving for 26 years! He’s currently a Clinical Psychologist in the Department of Veterans Affairs. Thank you for your service and for all you’re doing to help our Veterans Matthew!

JULIO BONFE ’01 graduated form West Point about 20 years ago and is now living in Forest Lake and working for I Corps as a Senior Planner for IT Network and Services.

MIKE TANGHE ’92 recently visited classmate TONY NICKLOW ’92 at his restaurant in Dinkytown, wrote a recap of the morning and published it on Medium.

Congratulations to CDR BRYAN SWINTEK ’00 on his retirement from the United States Coast Guard after 21 years of service. LUKE CARLSON ’00 was able to attend Luke’s retirement ceremony in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan on July 14.

STOWE KINTZINGER ’07 and Alyssa Rosenow had their dream wedding April 14 at the Chatham Bars Inn, Cape Cod, Mass. In attendance, were Dr. CHRIS KNOEDLER ’07 and NATE UECKER ’07. Stowe is an Adjunct Professor of Political Science and Commercial Pilot.

Alyssa is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). They reside in Minneapolis.

ANDREW RONNFELDT ’08, and his wife, Megan, were recently honored to receive a special marriage blessing from Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican on September 3, 2025.

MICHAEL JANSEN ’08 and Margaryta Riznik were recently engaged during a March sunrise on Cocoa Beach, Florida.

After graduating from Saint Thomas Academy, BLAKE FONFARA ’09 went on to work in public accounting at KPMG and Baker Tilly, where he spent over a decade honing his expertise in finance, audit, and advisory services. In 2020, he launched Dallas Bitcoin ATM as a side hustle to help make Bitcoin more accessible in his community. What started small has since grown into a multi-million dollar operation with consistent double-digit annual growth and a bright future. Today, Dallas Bitcoin ATM operates a network of ATMs across the Dallas/Fort Worth metro and offers a boutique Over-the-Counter (OTC) desk as well as consulting for individuals, family offices, and businesses seeking to put Bitcoin on their balance sheets. They focus on simplicity, education, and excellent customer service.

Blake is proud to be building something meaningful in today’s rapidly evolving financial landscape — and especially grateful for the spark that was lit in Mr. Simmons’ AP Econ class, that set me on this path.
