My wife Ellen and I raised four sons. Honestly, it was mostly Ellen as my career in the Coast Guard often took me away from the family, sometimes for extended periods. As we moved around the country to accommodate my assignments, Ellen managed much of our and our sons lives. In particular was her focus on their schooling which started with finding the best programs, participating in school activities and the PTA, and assessing their needs as we transitioned to new areas. I played a supporting, consultative role much of the time.
While my sons are grown men today, I now have the opportunity to help shape the future of the cadets of Saint Thomas Academy as Interim Headmaster. Together, Ellen and I weighed whether I should accept this new assignment. I did my best to articulate what makes Saint Thomas Academy such a special place and why I had a strong desire to give back to the school of my youth. We agreed I should accept but I sensed she had reservations.
Since starting on August 1, my belief and pride in Saint Thomas Academy have grown even more as I reflect on how we successfully carry out our mission.
Our mission is our “true north,” keeping us focused on our highest priority of developing boys into men of character. Our four solid pillars provide structure to our mission while our values — faith, excellence, integrity and respect — define and set the standards for men of character. Faith and excellence are largely individual pursuits; integrity and respect are the glue binding cadets together in brotherhood.
MISSION
Our mission — to develop boys into men of character — is our promise to our students, our families, our community and the world.
We accomplish this through the transformative power of an educational and life experience deeply rooted in Catholic faith and traditions, academic excellence, military leadership, and an all-male environment.
ON THE COVER:
Past and present STA Mothers’ Club Presidents (left to right): Mary Vetscher, Pat Malkerson, Annie DePrey, Anita Hidding, Amy Fafinski, Margaret Gadient, Kris Goldade. Mary Beisse, Liz Neuberger, Judy Weber, Pat Hinz, Sue Davern, Jen Lovegreen, Mary Henderson, Sharon D’Agostino, and Donna McCarthy.
We do not pursue our mission in isolation. The communities that comprise Saint Thomas Academy are among our greatest strengths. Our alumni challenge us to become greater while holding us to the values and traditions that have shaped cadets throughout our history. Recipients of the Edward G. Hames ’36 Alumni Awards, including Dr. Joseph Ignatius Hamel ’39 featured in this issue of Saber, have set a high bar for us and future graduates. Dr. Hamel dedicated his life to God, his patients and to others, and surely heard the words, “Well done,” after his passing on September 15, 2019.
The faculty make a difference in boys’ lives each and every day. They work tirelessly, not just imparting information but teaching boys to think and reason, to question and explore. They care deeply for our students and their success as well as making Saint Thomas Academy its very best.
And lest we forget, we are a community of families and individuals. The Saint Thomas Academy Mothers’ Club, the esteemed 2019 Opus Sancti Thomae Award recipient, and the Saint Thomas Academy Fathers’ Club, have long supported our staff, faculty, boys and teams in countless ways and remind us that we are more than an academic institution and taskmasters. The Alumni Association remains steadfast in support of our mission. They all draw us together and help make the middle and high school years the most memorable for both the boys and their families.
Several months ago, I tried to articulate to Ellen all these factors that differentiate Saint Thomas Academy. I was at least somewhat effective as I’m writing to you today. But it wasn’t until she visited campus and witnessed personally the passion and commitment with which we all pursue our mission that said, “Now I understand.” She and I both thank you for the privilege to serve Saint Thomas Academy.

Mothers’ Club
Throughout the 80-year history of the Saint Thomas Academy Mothers’ Club, the organization has not only been woven into the Academy’s fabric but actually has helped weave the fabric of the Academy’s culture.
Established in 1938, the Mothers’ Club continues adding to its ever-expanding to-do list and continues to get stuff done.
“The Mothers’ Club is the brick and mortar of the community,” said Jodie Whaley, director of events and parent stewardship. “Whatever the task, they come in droves. I can’t say enough good things about them. This award is a long time coming.”
Asked where this ethic comes from, Whaley offers a oneword answer: “Mary.” Then, she adds, “It really is spiritual. It’s in their blood.”
The range of Mothers’ Club activities and sheer number of touchpoints within the Academy tells only part of the story. The rest is all heart and soul as shared in this collection of memories and insights from past Mothers’ Club presidents.
BY DAVID JACOBSON
“BEGINNING AS A GROUP TO OFFER PRAYER AND SOLACE FOR MOTHERS WITH SONS AT WAR, THE MOTHERS’ CLUB CONTINUES TO HELP MOTHERS DEEPEN THEIR FAITH AND SUPPORT EACH OTHER DURING THEIR SONS’ JOURNEYS.”
Liz Boo Neuberger, 2011-2012
The Mothers’ Club is a great partnership between mothers who are delighted to offer ideas, skills and labor to activities that support their sons’ growth and education at an all-male high school that occasionally needs a feminine perspective, strategy or touch to accomplish many projects — large and small — that make life better at Saint Thomas Academy.
The Mothers’ Club fills in many gaps at the Academy for imagining, planning and executing diverse undertakings, events and special occasions that otherwise would be forgotten or not given adequate attention. It is an important source of energy and finesse to give the school a more humanitarian and genteel feel — which rounds out the boys’ experience, enhances their environment at school and helps prepare them for their next chapters.

Beginning as a group to offer prayer and solace for mothers with sons at war, the Mothers’ Club continues to help mothers deepen their faith and support each other during their sons’ journeys. During joyful as well as difficult times, the Mothers’ Club is a beautiful expression of the many dimensions of community at Saint Thomas Academy. It is a great platform for collaboration among the players who significantly shape the lives of cadets.
I was honored to be part of the Mothers’ Club and to lead it for a year. It was an enormous opportunity to meet other women, connect with the Academy and find meaningful ways to engage and inspire our students during their high school years. I am so grateful for the privilege to be fully immersed in such a wonderful tradition at Saint Thomas Academy.
Jen Lovegreen, 2017-2018
My year as president was the first year without a chaplain, and that was my cross to bear. We needed to find different priests for various events, and it was hard because the boys were so attached to Father Gjengdahl. But different mothers knew different priests to ask for help, and it turned out great because the boys got so many different perspectives.
Anita Hidding, 1992-1993
When I was asked to take this role, I considered saying no, because I don’t like to get up in front of people. Then I realized, I wouldn’t be doing this for me, I’d be doing it for my son. It turned out to be a great thing for me and for him. My biggest memory is the Mother-Son Christmas Mass and Brunch. During the review of cadets, the looks on their faces made all our work worth it.

Dana Berg, 2016-2017
My favorite photo from that year was taken during the traditional holiday lunch that the Mothers’ Club helped serve to the boys before Christmas break. The women in photo are Jolene Owens (class rep), Jennifer Rutgers (uniform chair), myself, Julie Card (parent rep), Jennifer Lovegreen (pres-elect), Paula Raarup (past president), and Angela Budzius (vice president).
It was an incredible honor to be asked to be president. I knew that talented and dedicated women were leading all the committees, so it was easy to accept the position. The year begins with uniform sales, and it was great fun welcoming families to Saint Thomas Academy. Colonel DePuglio (now retired) was very grateful to all of the women who assisted, and he appreciated that we provided “a mother’s touch.”
Mothers’ Club supports the Academy’s mission, and behind the scenes graciously works to enrich the experience for all members of our community. We rally to organize, plan, celebrate, and pray together. It was a humbling and hectic year, and I grew to appreciate Saint Thomas Academy and everything it stands for in a whole new light.
Through Mothers’ Club, the relationship between mothers and sons is honored and nurtured, and for that I am forever grateful. I continue to be in awe of this fabulous group of women!

When the JROTC program changed, and we needed to switch out the patches on thousands of shirts, the moms were super into it. We orchestrated meetings to take the patches off and deliver shirts to a tailor we contracted to re-patch and re-package them. Leadership at the Academy asks us to do stuff, and then they step aside, and we run the show.
(Paula also presided over the Mothers’ Club during the devastation wrought by the tragic passing of her dear friend and vice president Monica Strout. Read her tribute at https://bit.ly/2mmFb7b.)
Sue Hayes, 1983-1984
We started to think big about the auction, trying to move it from a $10,000 event to a $100,000 event. It took the courage of Patrick Casey, along with the Mothers’ Club board to make this transition from what the event had been to what it could be. I met warm, smart, generous, dedicated and committed women. It was like a full-time job, and the pay was better education for our sons and lifelong friendships.
“ The Mothers’ Club is a great partnership between mothers who are delighted to offer ideas, skills and labor to activities that support their sons’ growth and education.”

2019 EDWARD G. HAMES ALUMNI HONORS AWARD RECIPIENT
Dr. Joseph Ignatius Hamel ’39
BY DAVID JACOBSON
Joe Hamel ’39, passed away in September at age 97, just days before he was to receive this year’s Hames Award. He may have had more than a million mourners, considering the families of the 10,000-plus babies Dr. Hamel delivered during an OB-GYN career that spanned more than 50 years. Both he and his family are inextricably linked to Saint Thomas Academy and his loss is felt by many in our community.
He was practically born into the medical profession, the son of Dr. Arnold Hamel and his wife, Lucy. He attended Incarnation School in Minneapolis
and then Saint Thomas Academy, where he graduated in 1939, along with his brothers Bob ’41 (also a past Hames Award recipient!), John ’44 , and Arnold ’46. The family’s link to the Academy extends to Dr. Hamel’s sons: Joe, Jr. ’70 ; and Nick ’77, who accepted the Hames Award on their father’s behalf.
During his time at Saint Thomas Academy, Dr. Hamel distinguished himself as a member of the crack drill team and as a tennis and hockey player. “Attending Saint Thomas Academy was a great experience for my father,” said
Nick Hamel. “He really connected with his friends there. He always had good memories, and that’s why he wanted us to go there.”
In his memoir, titled Papa’s Story , Dr. Hamel wrote: “High school days were busy and quite enjoyable. It seemed we spent lots of time polishing shoes and pressing pants. Our day started early as we usually took the street car to the east side of the Lake Street Bridge and walked 6 blocks to school….
— Continued on page 8
“Tennis and hockey were my sports in high school. We used to scrimmage against the St. Thomas College hockey teams, and at 130 lbs. they used to kill us on the boards. I recall many days returning from school with sore hips and legs from practice as I limped to my room to study. Dad always said, ‘If you can’t study, you quit playing hockey.’ ”
After graduating Saint Thomas Academy, Dr. Hamel attended St. Thomas College, followed by medical school at Marquette University. He began an internship in Milwaukee in the summer of 1946, and then, as he wrote in Papa’s Story , “When my father died on July 31, my 24th birthday, I transferred to Minneapolis General Hospital so that I could be home with my mother, as the oldest male of the 10 kids, and offer her my support.”
By 1948, he was in residency at Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital in Jersey City, NJ. His stay was interrupted when pressed into military service, and
he served in the Air Force in New Foundland. There, he met a nurse named Katie Mauel, whom he wed and loved for 68 years of marriage until his passing.
Their military service complete, Dr. Hamel returned to Hague, where he became chief resident, and then to Minnesota to begin his practice in 1955. His return to the Land of 10,000 Lakes brought him back to the lake he knew best, Whitefish Lake, where his family’s cabins constituted a community known as “Hamelot.”
Nick Hamel recalls great joy at spending summers there with many of his 52 cousins, boating, fishing, and playing tennis. In a culmination of sorts, the Hamels last July 4 celebrated their family’s 100 years at Whitefish Lake.
The significance of this cabin community lies in the continuity it provided from Dr. Arnold Hamel to Dr. Joseph Hamel to Dr. Nick Hamel.
As the latter recalls, “My father was quite busy as a physician, but he made time to connect with his children.”
Just as importantly, the lake prompted reflection that reveals Joseph Hamel’s spirituality, as related in Papa’s Story : “I cannot recall even one event in all my years that I enjoy more than sitting on our bank overlooking the gorgeous Whitefish Lake. It is hard to deny a deity when contemplating life on this Earth while viewing it from this vantage point. I would bet all my descendants will agree on this point someday.”
Joseph Hamel’s spirituality, namely Catholicism, infused his everyday life. He was a frequent participant in events at the Demontreville Jesuit Retreat House near Lake Elmo, and his memoir contains this passage: “The rosary that I carry in my pocket, into the delivery room, into the operating room, everywhere I go, is responsible for all that is good in my life.”

EDWARD G. HAMES ’36 ALUMNI HONORS AWARD
Since 1969, the Saint Thomas Academy Alumni Association has honored a leader in our community with the Alumni Honors Award, which was later renamed the Hames Alumni Honors Award in 1971. The award is named for Edward G. Hames ’36. During his days as a student at the Academy, Hames was Cadet Colonel, an Eagle Award Winner and a leader in school activities. He was a teacher and also presided over the STA Alumni Association in 1967-68 and was serving on the STA Board of Directors in 1970 at the time of his death.
The Hames Award seeks to give due recognition to those alumni who have exemplified the ideals of the Academy, and in doing so have distinguished themselves in their communities. Such alumni enrich the lives of those about them through their personal and family lives, their occupations or professions, their civic leadership or human welfare activities, their intellectual or cultural pursuits or their efforts to advance the goals of the Academy.
Recipients of the Edward G. Hames Alumni Honors Award:
1969 – John Lee ’51
1970 – William Fallon ’15
1971 – Patrick Towle ’25
1972 – Alfred Gruenther ’16
Nick Hamel’s reflections confirm this nexus of family, faith and occupation in his father’s life. “I followed in my father’s footsteps as an OB-GYN, and I’ve met a lot of families whose babies my father delivered. I get the sense he was very good at this work. I recall him talking on the phone to his patients. He really cared about them, and he was there for them. He also taught at the University of Minnesota, and passing on knowledge was very important to him.”
It is worth remembering that a great deal of the knowledge that Dr. Joseph Hamel passed on was gained at his alma mater.

Admiral John Crowley Named Interim Headmaster
BY DAVID JACOBSON
John Crowley ’71 is serving as interim headmaster at Saint Thomas Academy, following the resignation of Matthew Mohs ’91. Crowley retired from the U.S. Coast Guard in 2008 with the rank of Rear Admiral. He served 35 years, including a stint as the service’s Judge Advocate General and an assignment to help establish the Department of Homeland Security after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, advising on national maritime security strategy.
Crowley will call upon such leadership experience to navigate the Academy’s transition to a new permanent headmaster by the start of the 2020-2021 school year. “I spent a third of my career at sea, the majority of that time leading young people,” he said. “That may be the experience most relevant to leading a school community.”
“OUR
BOYS LIVE IN A DIFFERENT WORLD AND FACE DIFFERENT CHALLENGES THAN WHAT WE’VE KNOWN IN THE PAST. I WANT TO MAKE SURE WE ARE HELPING FACULTY KEEP UP WITH TECHNOLOGY AND SOME OF THOSE CHALLENGES.”
While keeping faculty and students excited about the current state of the Academy, Crowley said he will not stand pat and plans to lay the groundwork for future enhancements. “The mission of developing boys into men of character is the focus of everything we do on every day of the week. A lot of that has to do with academics, and we are undergoing a review and accreditation process with the Independent Schools Association of the Central States.”
Crowley also looks to enhance professional development opportunities for faculty. “Our boys live in a different world and face different challenges than what we’ve known in the past,” he said. “I want to make sure we are helping faculty keep up with technology and some of those challenges.”
Another area commanding Crowley’s attention is maximizing the strength of the Saint Thomas Academy community. “There are lots of teams and collaborative groups that need to matrix together,” he said. “We need to make sure that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. My goal is to have a really solid roadmap for the next permanent headmaster.”
2019 RAGNAR MINNESOTA
Saint Thomas Academy Road Scholars
BY AMY MURPHY
What does it take to gather a group of highly motivated Saint Thomas Academy alumni, staff, faculty and parents?
You simply have to offer a 205-mile, 33-hour, relay race from St. Paul to Duluth. A team of 12 came together for the inaugural STA RAGNAR Relay. Collectively, these runners have completed 50+ marathons, yet this was the first time they ran as a team. They named themselves the “Road Scholars.”
RAGNAR is the largest relay series in the nation. During its 15-year history, it has spread across the US, Canada, Mexico, Europe and Australia. The name Ragnar comes from a king and hero of early 9th century Scandinavia. This king was a conqueror, a leader, and fearless. The qualities of King Ragnar hold true for the make-up of today’s RAGNAR Relay runners.
It takes grit to run a RAGNAR. Each team member runs 3 legs over the course of 2 days. It takes a strong athlete to meet the physical demands, fatigue and sleep deprivation involved in this event. Yet, when a team completes a RAGNAR, they are often ready to sign up for the following year’s race!
Team members typically travel in large vans. These vans are often decorated with colorful lights, team members’ names, hash marks indicating the number of other teams passed along the way and fun slogans. There is a competition for
the most creatively decorated van. With competitive running often comes competitive decorating!
COL Neil Hetherington brought the idea forward for a STA relay team in Spring 2019. This idea proved to be an engaging prospect. Much interest was spread across the STA community. The relay team was first introduced to faculty and staff. Over the course of the summer, 4 moms and a talented alumnus runner joined in.
The STA team was split into 2 vans; each van had 6 runners. Van 1 kicked off the race at the Capitol at 7:00 AM August 15 with Master Chief Roger Friede. Each team member from Van 1 ran a leg. The team then switched to Van 2 in Stillwater. COL Hetherington kicked off the next team of 6 runners through sunny and 90-degree weather. The vans proceeded to leapfrog from Saint Paul to Duluth, all the while having a continuous runner in place the full 36 legs. The distance of each leg varied from 2.70 miles to 10.70 miles. Each leg was rated easy, moderate, hard and very hard.
Discussions are already underway for RAGNAR 2020. COL Hetherington is anticipating 2 STA teams. We would love to see an all-alumni team. Are you ready for the RAGNAR challenge?

US ARMY DRILL TEAM PERFORMS
The “Soloist” U.S. Army Drill Team performed during Grandparents’ Day in early October.
The U.S. Army Drill Team “soloist” performance involves four of the Drill Team’s senior Soldiers and either the Platoon Leader or the Platoon Sergeant. The smaller performances are usually between five and seven minutes. Through its daring and complex performances, the U.S. Army Drill Team acts as “good-will ambassadors” for the Army, supporting community relations and recruiting efforts on behalf of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard) and the U.S. Army.
NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
Senior Hayden Ousley has been named a semifinalist in the 65th annual National Merit Scholarship Program, which represents less than one percent of the nation’s high school graduating seniors.
High School Skills Challenge
High school football players from six schools across the state were invited to showcase their talents at the High School Skills Challenge hosted by the Minnesota Vikings. In the preliminary round, Bloomington Kennedy and Saint Thomas Academy totaled the most points in events that included the 40-yard dash, QB distance throw, relay race and a QB/receiver accuracy challenge. Cadets Attend Scout Camp in New Mexico
This summer Conor Cooper ’21, Carson Cooper ’23, Cooper Clinton ’23, Liam Harvey ’23, and Adam Roszkowski ’23 went out on a backpacking hike in the mountains of New Mexico at Philmont Scout Ranch. The exploration was led by Colonel Curt S. Cooper and STA Dad Robert Harvey.
Philmont Scout Ranch is the Boy Scouts of America’s largest National High Adventure Base. It covers 140,177 acres of rugged mountain wilderness in the Sangre de Cristo range of the Rocky Mountains in northeastern New Mexico.
GRANDPARENT'S DAY
More than 1 million Scouts, Venturers, and Advisors have experienced the adventure of Philmont since its first camping season in 1939. In addition to providing an unforgettable adventure in backpacking across miles of rugged, rocky trails, Philmont Scout Ranch offers programs that feature the best of the Old West — horseback riding, burrow packing, gold panning, chuckwagon dinners, and interpretive history — with exciting challenges for today such as rock climbing, mountain biking, and sport shooting.
Over 1,200 grandparents celebrated mass, shared fellowship time with their grandsons and watched the Pass & Review on October 2.

CROSS COUNTRY
The team has several young, hard working boys who are hungry to be the next great STA CC team. The varsity team consists of Padon Kinzley ’22 , Teddy Lawder ’21, Jack Sexton ’21, Evan Santrizos ’20, Adam Husaby ’23, Kevin Murphy ’21, Jack Bartlett ’20, and Harvey Holmstadt ’23
Injury and illness has hampered a full team appearance but the full team was able to compete at the Osseo Invite. Varsity placed 3rd of 12 teams and JV placed 7th of 14 teams with some top JV runners sick and injured. Individual awards went to Padon Kinzley who placed 6th and Teddy Lawder who placed 7th.
The team took first place in the Varsity and Junior Varsity Conference Cross Country meet on October 15. Padon Kinzley ’22 finished in second place and Teddy Lawder ’21 finished in third place. Kinzley, Lawder, Jack Sexton ’21 and Evan Santrizos ’20 were named All-Conference. Adam Husaby ’23 was named All-Conference Honorable Mention. Finally, Harvey Holmstadt ’23 finished in first place in the junior varsity race. At the time of press, the team was preparing to participate in the State Section Meet
FOOTBALL
Varsity football is 7-0 going into MEA weekend. The team is ranked #7 overall in the metro area and #2 in Class A. This year’s senior class is a combined 19-1 over the past two seasons. The team has secured a first-round bye and will have its first playoff game at home on October 26.
This year’s sophomore team has worked hard and gotten better every week. They have improved to 5-3 on the season including going 3-1 against 6A schools (defeating Shakopee, Prior Lake, and Minnetonka).
The Freshman football team has had an amazing season this year. With a strong turnout of 54 players to start the season (one got pulled up to Varsity and another to the sophomore team) we came away with some big wins. A couple tough games against Mahtomedi (7-0) and Hastings (20-8) we then earned a come from behind win over Park Cottage Grove 29-22 where our defense stopped Park at the 1-yard line as time expired! The team finished a perfect 8-0.
SOCCER
The Cadet soccer team is under the leadership of first year coach Brian Kallman. They have played a challenging schedule and currently have a record of 5-8-3. Coach Kallman says, “ the varsity team is learning a new system and are peaking at the right time of the year.”
Games against some top 10 teams will prepare the Cadets for a run to a section championship. The Cadets are led by captains Wyatt Isaak ’20, Will Guttery ’21 and Aidan McGill ’21. This year’s team has five seniors including Zach Holper, Wyatt Isaac, Abe Yosef, Sean Nelson, and Garrett Rivers. The lower level teams are doing very well and the future of Cadet Soccer remains bright.

Honoring Our Donors
The 2018-19 Annual Report honors and recognizes hundreds of individuals and organizations who provided financial support to Saint Thomas Academy for the previous fiscal year (July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019). We are grateful to each and every one of you for your expression of support and confidence in the Academy and its tradition of educational excellence.
While compiling these lists, we made every effort to avoid errors. If your name was listed incorrectly or inadvertently omitted, please call the Advancement Office at 651-683-1594.
Your Investment, Our Students, Amazing Results
BY DAVID HOTTINGER ’85 DIRECTOR OF INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT
Thank you for supporting Saint Thomas Academy. Our annual report highlights the commitment to Saint Thomas Academy that so many members of our community share. Our donors directly impact our school and students in so many important ways and we are, as always, humbled and grateful for your thoughtful gifts. Your investment is evident daily at Saint Thomas Academy — from the number of students who gain access to an education at this institution, to the cutting-edge educational spaces, and the outstanding athletic and cocurricular programs — your generosity is witnessed and utilized every single day. Our donors transform young lives and build our vision of excellence in all that is Saint Thomas Academy.
David Hottinger ’85
I am pleased to report some extraordinary outcomes that deserve recognition and should be highlighted. They are the result of your answer and support of our call to action.
Thanks to your generosity, some of our select athletic facilities have received muchneeded face lifts. Within Gerry Brown Stadium the turf was replaced, and the track was resurfaced. Yes, the track is Cadet Blue! (See page 12)
Our Varsity Baseball Stadium, home of our State Champions, has field turf being installed as well as enhancements to our backstop, entrance, dugout, bullpens, batting cages and lighting options.
Athletics is not the only place your generosity has been felt, though. Our focus and efforts toward growth of our endowment and scholarship resources was also positively impacted. The strong support of existing endowed funds and the establishment of new ones meant that we were able to provide tuition assistance to 50% of our students and give out more than $3.1 million in financial aid. These numbers are proof that collectively we can achieve aspirational goals that benefit our great school and the cadets who call it home.
Thank you for investing in Saint Thomas Academy, our mission, our four pillars and our core values. Most importantly, thank you for investing in our students, helping to develop them into men of character. They are the leaders of tomorrow.
See you soon and go cadets!

West St. Paul Native Leaves Marines to Serve the Poor in the Philippines
REPRINTED WITH PERMISSION FROM THE CATHOLIC SPIRIT, SEPTEMBER 19, 2019
When Jeremiah Kraker was in the Marine Corps, he liked being pushed to his limit, even through sleep deprivation, cold and living in the mud.
But two years ago while he was serving in Force Reconnaissance, a special operationscapable force, the West St. Paul native heard an equally radical call from God: to give his life in service to the poor.
Kraker, 24, responded by ending his fouryear military career last year and moving to the Philippines, where he ministers to youth, prostitutes and the poor.
“It doesn’t surprise me when Jeremiah Kraker does something,” said Gene Messing, a leader of Kraker’s high school youth group in the Community of Christ the Redeemer, a West St. Paul-based Catholic charismatic covenant community.
“He didn’t just join the military, he joined the Marines,” said Messing, who attends St. Charles Borromeo. “He didn’t just join the Marines, he went into special operations. He didn’t do one training, he did a lot of training.”
With his all-in determination, Kraker has intercepted passes for the St. Thomas Academy football team, led SWAT-like training for foreign military units and now prays and serves in Asia. After traveling the world and finding renewal in God, his next move might be the priesthood.
The second of four children, Kraker attended the parish and school of St. Michael in West St. Paul and graduated from St. Thomas Academy in Mendota Heights in 2013.
Though involved in the youth group, Kraker said he was apathetic about his faith in high school. But he was excited about joining the Marine Corps.
“I really just wanted to fight against evil,” he said. “I wanted to protect the world against those people who are trying to harm others.”
He enlisted after graduation and trained intensely, completing among other courses the Army Ranger School, a rigorous 61-day program that develops combat and leadership
skills by testing physical and mental stamina. Through training, Kraker formed his will and ability to handle adversity.
Kraker and his team members trained other soldiers and military units in other countries to fight drug cartels and terrorism, but he never lost his desire to serve in a combat zone. As a result, he considered switching to the Army, but decided against that change.
Kraker was restless — a sign God was working in him, he now believes.
At the same time, friends in the military challenged him about his faith, motivating him to do research and decide what he believed.
But even as Kraker learned more about Catholicism, he was frustrated that his abilities weren’t enough to help friends he was working with who were struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts.
“I was very knowledgeable about my faith, but I had absolutely no relationship with Jesus,” he said. “I knew I should. I did stuff that was dangerous like jumping out of planes and I would pray once in a while. I went to Mass every Sunday.”
While serving in the Marine Corps in Japan, Kraker decided to volunteer during his 2017 Christmas break. His sister connected him with a religious community in Cebu City, Philippines. As he prayed and served street children through the Community of St. John, he encountered God and the poor.
“For me to really give myself to the Lord, (he) had to humble me,” Kraker said, including his struggles to help his friends. “I had to see how unbelievably weak and sinful I am for me to turn to God in my weakness and in my sense of hopelessness and brokenness.”
Kraker’s experience convinced him to finish his military service and move into a household of men with the Community of St. John in the Philippines in 2018. His training helped him adapt to the country’s heat and humidity.
“I want to serve God and I want to serve these people who have nothing because God blessed me in so many ways,” he said.
Kraker now helps with retreats and other programs in the Philippines as part of Pure Heart, a ministry rooted in the Corazon Puro program founded in New York City by the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal. The ministry forms youth and young adults in Church teaching on love and sexuality.
A former linebacker with a booming voice, he sometimes intimidates the much shorter youth, but they quickly warm up to him, Kraker said.
One night a week Kraker joins another religious community, Servants of the Plan of God of Lima, Peru, to minister to local prostitutes.
“God has placed in my heart a special place for these women,” he said. “If I can give them hope, if I can give them just a little joy for a day, for me that’s enough.”
As Kraker considers a priestly or religious vocation, he hopes to continue serving the poor.
Kraker loves the poor, Filipinos and what’s radical, said Father Andrew Brinkman, pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe in St. Paul, where Kraker attends Mass when he is in town, as he was in July, visiting family.
“He’s ready to do something bold,” said Father Brinkman, noting Kraker’s joy, gentleness and care for his family.
Kraker’s military career was bold but he’s not sure if it was God’s will. He does believe the Lord used his experiences to help him grow.
There may be more extreme assignments, but for now Kraker finds joy in faith and the poor.
God’s “love and mercy are so incomprehensible,” he said, “that through any personal or cultural struggle or sin, we can hope in the fact that Jesus has won already.”

Congratulations to the 2019 Cadet Baseball Team for winning their first ever MSHSL State Championship! The third-seeded Cadets claimed the state championship with a 1-0 victory following a nearly three-hour delay to start the game because of afternoon rain. The wait didn't matter for either
pitcher, as Saint Thomas Academy’s Duke Coburn pitched a six-hit shutout with nine strikeouts.
