So, this is the beginning - the start of another New Year at Stable View!

First we would like to welcome you, second, we’d like to wish you a very successful 2020.

As with the Roaring [19]20’s, in the 2020’s, things are pretty “hot” at Stable View as well.

We’ve a record entry of 280 for the Opener, and when you think that we ran this event for the first time in 2018, it goes to show what can be achieved with some new thinking, a little risk taking, plus some good planning.

Another “hot” area for Stable View in 2020 should be the Designer Builders CCI-S 1*,2*,3* and 4* at the end of March. This is a new event for us and will be the first time that Stable View has been able to run FEI Divisions during the Aiken “Season”. We hope that we’ll generate significant interest in the 1* which has FITS sponsoring $100 gift vouchers that are to be presented to all riders who complete the Division.

Our Dressage shows are knocking the ball out of the park, and with our newly announced Hunter Jumper Shows, we feel that we are doing the right things for Aiken and for the Riders who come here.

As with Eventing and Dressage, we are going to progress slowly with H/J’s.

Taking advice from our Event Organizer, Brian Lookabill who has lots of experience in H/J’s, we are going to gradually learn our way into this area. We believe that we have the right facilities in place to do a good job, also the right people in place.

Depending on the availability of suitable “dates,” our intention is to offer A shows as soon as possible.

In terms of today’s event, Mogie has designed an inviting Cross Country Course. As you’d expect at the beginning of the year, it’s not too testing! Please note that all Dressage will take place in the Grass Dressage Field, also, all show jumping will take place in the Main Arena, with show jump warm up in the Covered Arena.

Between the Stalls that are in use today you’ll notice that there is some new construction.

This is the last of four Rider Lounges. Contained within will be toilets, a stove, a refrigerator, and storage, along with tables and chairs. The inside will be for meeting and relaxing.

Outside will be additional toilets, showers, a washing machine and dryer, also an ice machine. Over the years, we’ve learnt a lot about Rider requirements. We believe that this facility incorporates all of our experience to-date.

We all hope that you enjoy yourself today, and don’t forget to visit one of the other Rider Lounges. The Competitors Party will start at 5:30 on Saturday. All Riders plus 1 are welcome.

The Competitors Party will be held in the upstairs of the Pavilion.

What is Eventing?

Also known as "Horse Trials", this demanding sport is comprised of 3 phases: dressage, cross country, and show jumping. The same rider and horse must compete in all 3 phases. Scores from the phases are combined so the winner is the rider with the best overall score.

Dressage: The first phase is always dressage, a series of suppling and strengthening exercises performed in a flat, enclosed arena.

Dressage develops the horse’s submission and responsiveness to perform a pattern of intricate movements. This is the fundamental training of the sport upon which the two jumping phases are built.

Cross-Country: Cross-country is the cornerstone of Eventing, and tests the speed, endurance, boldness and jumping ability of the horse over varied terrain and solid obstacles. The jumps may be natural obstacles such as water, banks, ditches and drops. Cross-country is ridden at a gallop with speed requirements dependent upon the level of difficulty of the division.

Show Jumping: This phase tests the same horse and rider’s precision over a course of brightly painted fences with rails that can easily be knocked down. Show jumping tests the stamina, precision, and recovery of the horse.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Kristin Matthews I fell in love with horses during a trip to Iceland in the summer of 2016. In the fall of 2018, I was able to attend the FEI World Equestrian Games in Tryon, NC to watch the Para-Dressage competition. Last summer, my husband and I made the decision to move to Aiken for family and careers. Having had no experience with horses and knowing that I wanted to continue my passion for volunteering in the community, I researched opportunities to learn about horses. My research led me to Stable View where I volunteered for my first event in May 2019, and I have been a part of every Eventing Academy or Horse Trial since then.

View are absolutely amazing. I now have the opportunity to be part of the First Annual Artisan Fair to be held in conjunction with the March “Designer Builders Spring” CCI-S 1/2/3/4* Event. This will be a fabulous addition to the Stable View calendar of events, and will feature local crafters and artisans sharing their unique handcrafted products chosen for the equestrian competitors, supporters, and spectators.

As of this past Thanksgiving, I have started horse riding lessons with the goal of competing in Eventing by next year. Keep an eye out for me on the Sprouts course in January 2021!
