This has been a tough Oktoberfest!!

Fortunately, having so many committed Stable View colleagues has made a huge difference, but, never the less, this has been the most challenging to-date. At the time of writing we are going to have around 30 Vendors, 200 VIP’s on Saturday and around 350 horses at Stable View for the weekend of Oktoberfest. Entries at c335 will be a record, and very close to our capacity of 350. It’s worth making the point that increasingly, we’re drawing horses and riders (over 200) from out of town and also out of State.

Most challenging has been the weather and with temperatures regularly exceeding 95 degrees (and a heat index of over 100), on many days we’ve had to dig deep to keep preparations on schedule.

With another 16 acres of Bermuda Celebration having been sprigged, our irrigation system has been on 24/7. This has left little time to use it elsewhere.

Rain has not been in the forecast, and what there has been locally seems to have circumnavigated Stable View.

We’d like to thank you for coming to Stable View for what has become our signature event in our Eventing Calendar.

We hope that you will enjoy yourself and, most important, we hope that everyone will be safe.

The FEI Code of Conduct for the Welfare of the Horse The Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) expects all those involved in international equestrian sport to adhere to the FEI’s Code of Conduct and to acknowledge and accept that at all times the welfare of the horse must be paramount and must never be subordinated to competitive or commercial influences.

1. At all stages during the preparation and training of competition horses, welfare must take precedence over all other demands. This includes good horse management, training methods, farriery and tack, and transportation.

2. Horses and Athletes must be fit, competent and in good health before they are allowed to compete. This encompasses medication use, surgical procedures that threaten welfare or safety, pregnancy in mares and the misuse of aids.

3. Events must not prejudice horse welfare. This involves paying careful attention to the competition areas, ground surfaces, weather conditions, stabling, site safety and fitness of the horse for onward travel after the event.

4. Every effort must be made to ensure that horses receive proper attention after they have competed and that they are treated humanely when their competition careers are over. This covers proper veterinary care, competition injuries, euthanasia and retirement.

5. The FEI urges all involved with the sport to attain the highest levels of education in their areas of expertise.

Dr. Debbie Williamson, DVM FEI VETERINARIAN

Dr. Debbie Williamson is a South Carolina native born and raised in Kingstree, SC. She got her ďŹ rst pony at the age of six and has shared a love of horses ever since.

Dr. Williamson is a 1987 graduate from The University of Georgia Veterinary School and has her own mobile equine practice in which her primary focus is on equine lameness. Dr. Williamson now resides in Harwood, Maryland. Dr. Williamson has been working in the sport of Eventing for 27 years and works numerous events per year. She has been a member of the AAEP Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Team, a member of the USEA Safety Committee, and is currently a member of the Maryland Medical First Responders.

What is Eventing?

Also known as "Horse Trials", this demanding sport is comprised of 3 phases: dressage, cross country, and show jumping. The same rider and horse must compete in all 3 phases. Scores from the phases are combined so the winner is the rider with the best overall score.

Dressage: The first phase is always dressage, a series of suppling and strengthening exercises performed in a flat, enclosed arena.

Dressage develops the horse’s submission and responsiveness to perform a pattern of intricate movements. This is the fundamental training of the sport upon which the two jumping phases are built.

Cross-Country: Cross-country is the cornerstone of Eventing, and tests the speed, endurance, boldness and jumping ability of the horse over varied terrain and solid obstacles. The jumps may be natural obstacles such as water, banks, ditches and drops. Cross-country is ridden at a gallop with speed requirements dependent upon the level of difficulty of the division.

Show Jumping: This phase tests the same horse and rider’s precision over a course of brightly painted fences with rails that can easily be knocked down. Show jumping tests the stamina, precision, and recovery of the horse.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Myron Langer My riding career did not start until I was 45 years old. Then after 3 weeks of lessons I purchased my first horse. We started just doing trail rides, but within a year we were going on Hunter Paces and riding 1st Flight with the Windy Hollow Hunt Club in New York. The following year, I spent a week riding with Tony Hill at an eventing clinic in England. The timing was perfect as I got to spend the last few days at the Badminton Horse Trials.

Back home in NY, I started to compete in eventing at the lower levels and then started volunteering at shows. My coaches at the time were Darrah Alexander & Louise Meryman and they helped me realize how crucial it was to volunteer at Events. If there are no volunteers, there will be no Events.

The following years to escape the NY winters, I started spending part of them in Ocala, FL, where I could event every weekend.

On the way back to New York, we always stopped in Aiken to compete at Jumping Branch Farm. After a few years of this it was time to make the move to Aiken.

I moved here in 2014 and shortly after started taking dressage lessons with Amy McElroy. At that time, I was competing at some of the local shows at Jumping Branch Farm, Paradise Farm, Full Gallop and Stable View.

I started volunteering at Jumping Branch (dressage warm-up) and Stable View (fence judge). Last year, I was asked to help setup the dressage arenas at Stable View. Then in the summer, I was asked to be responsible for setting up all the dressage arenas for the FEI Oktoberfest Horse Trials. I accepted and was then asked to ride the CIC 1* Dressage Test ride. Not having a horse that I could ride at this level, Lisi Tibrea graciously offered me her horse, Talisman. In the spring after she had gotten injured and was unable to ride, she had allowed me to have some lessons on him with Amy.

Riding Talisman turned out to be a life-changing event for me because I decided now to focus on dressage.

Don Ducati is a 16 year old Hanoverian that had been put out to pasture for 2 years. Under Amy’s tutelage, I slowly got him back into shape. We started competing at training level in January, got our 1st level scores in February, our 2nd level scores in March and our 3rd level scores to earn the USDF Bronze Medal in July. We’re currently schooling 4th level.

Again this year, I will be setting up the dressage arenas for the 2019 Octoberfest. Then Don Ducati and I will be riding the CCI 2* Dressage Test ride.
