Welcome to the 2019 USEF/USEA Aiken Opener Horse Trials We appreciate you coming out so early in the New Year. Having said that, we were very lucky with the weather last year. Next year this event is being pushed back a week, hopefully we will catch more late-arriving “Snow Birds”?

Stable View has changed significantly over the past year. We have 100 New Stalls, a new Hunter Arena and the Hunt Boxes are finished. This allows for significantly greater flexibility and the ability to develop Stable View into a rounded Equestrian Training Center with an ability to focus on Dressage and Hunter Jumpers as well as Eventing, along with being able to offer Accommodations.

At the core of our plans the Stable View is our Pavilion and to that end, at lunchtime today we will have the Grand Opening. Please stop by and have a look around.

As you are aware, at this event in terms of Cross country, we offer a softer challenge that uses the Eventing Academy area. As with the original course this is irrigated, drained and at present supports Winter Rye. Mogie has designed a Course that’s relevant for early Season Riders – there are few trees and no lanes on this Course.

Major John Clay TECHNICAL DELEGATE

I grew up with horses in Wyoming. I started riding when I was 4 years old on my dad’s QH roping stallion. “Banner” took such good care of me. Dad would saddle him up and throw me on his back and off we would go at the dead walk. This was the routine for several weeks until I began to develop balance and a seat.

Eventually walk turned into jog, then trot and so on. A few months later Dad again saddled Banner up, threw me over his back and off we went, cantering. A few moments later, Banner and I tore through the shed row jumping a stack of hay bales along way. My dad turned to my mom and said, “Well, that Stud has put John in charge and he is too young to be piloting a Stallion.” So, the next thing I knew I was on a Shetland pony named Moccasin. From then I had several other ponies and horses. Mom and Dad continued to trail ride, western ride and basically lived in a world dominated by horses and horse people.

When I was in Junior High School, my mom and I volunteered to work as jump judges at the local horse trails. This was my first introduction to English riding and it was incredible. I loved the speed and the power of the horses flying over the fences. If that wasn’t enough, I noticed a girl riding in the event whom I knew from school and had a sizable crush on. From that moment on I was determined to be an eventer! I grabbed one of our western QHs and started learning to and teaching him to jump. I eventer several summers through Junior and Senior High School until I reached college. I went through college, rode when I could but didn’t compete much. I lost track of the eventer girl and to this day have no idea where she lives or even if she still rides...but I do!

I returned to riding after graduating from the University of Wyoming. I worked with scores of coaches and clinicians; Jack Le Goff, Janet Foy, Eric Smiley, but the one instructor who changed my life was Lynn Klasavage from Parker, Colorado.

She opened my eyes to knowledgeable show jumping and with her help my eventing career took off.

While I was in High School, I decided that I wanted to eventually become a Technical Delegate. A man by the name of Dave Harvey TDd in Area IX for years and he was the kindest most fair minded soul you would ever have the pleasure of knowing. After Dave, I was influenced by Hoot McLean, Deeda Randle, Tom Ordway, Denis Gloccum, Cindy DePorter and Wayne Quarles.

Being a TD is the best job ever, simply because you have the opportunity and responsibility to ensure the health and welfare of the greatest athletes God has placed on this Earth, Horses. I love this sport, I love the competitors who strive and bleed for this sport, but I live to be with event horses...the most noble of creature on this Earth.
