Did You Know? Hummingbirds do not just drink nectar. They eat bugs and small spiders to get protein.

Barry’s August Letter

At long last (by the time you read this) we are able to rent out the five Tiny Homes!! Named Badminton, Burleigh, Bicton, Bromont and Blenheim, this project has taken over a year with some twists and turns. It was a year ago that I said they were ready for rental! Little did we know that new rules would get in the way of the electricity and our ambitions. As this saga closes, we’re hopeful that our next significant project will be easier.

As I write, the topsoil has been removed, a sand clay base leveled and rolled for the latest addition to Stable View’s facilities. The new Office Complex will, apart from providing our colleagues with much needed space, also provide room for merchandise and a meetings space. This space will also double as a show office. As recent visitors will be aware, the present Pavilion space has become very crowded. For the Bistro and Ollie’s Inn to develop, they need their separate space from volunteers, runners, and officials. Once the building is completed, they will all be housed in the new Office complex. Positioned between the Work Shed and the Main Barn, our hope is that in a couple of years, it will look as if it’s been there forever. Completion is expected to be in around a year. I’m hoping that next time I write, it will be getting a little cooler!! With best wishes from the Stable View Team

Rider Spotlight: Jake Tessler

Eventer Jake Tessler has been a familiar face at Stable View for several years at horse trials such as the Interscholastic Championships. Tessler also attends events at Stable View such as the GDCTA Summer Camp and the United States Eventing Association’s Emerging Athletes Under 21 Clinic. Jake has been competitively riding since his early teenage years therefore, his mother, Jana, is also a familiar face at events. As Jake begins his senior year of high school, he spared some time for this Q&A.

Q. What first made you fall in love with eventing, and what keeps you excited about the sport today? A. As a child, I always loved horses. When I first began to take lessons at age 8, I fell in love with riding as well. Soon after, I took my favorite pony XC schooling and felt that I had found my passion that day. Today, I continue to be excited about the sport because I feel it is an incredible way to build a partnership with horses, which I really enjoy doing.

Q. As a young rider, what has been the biggest lesson you've learned from competing? A. The biggest lesson I’ve learned from competing is how important it is to focus on your personal growth with the horses you are riding instead of focusing on the results of the competition. I have learned to set personal goals for myself to achieve each time I compete, as I have found this is the best way to measure my personal growth throughout my riding. Q. How has your mom, Jana, been a big part of your eventing journey? If so, what's the best piece of advice she's given you, and how has it helped you as a rider? A. My mom has been heavily involved in my eventing journey. Neither of my parents have ever been around horses in their lives until I started riding. The best piece of advice that my mom has given me is that if at first I don’t succeed, then to keep trying until I do. This has helped me as a rider because it has taught me how important it is to not give up when things get difficult, which can often happen with horses.

Q. Eventing requires dressage, show jumping, and crosscountry—do you have a favorite phase, and which one challenges you the most? A. My favorite phase in eventing is cross country because I find it very exciting and I am the happiest while on course. I believe cross country is one of the best ways to challenge my partnerships with the horses I ride, and I enjoy seeing how I can overcome the challenges on the course. I would say dressage currently challenges me the most because I often have a difficult time focusing and showcasing my horses’ best abilities in the show arena. It is one of my goals to improve this part of my riding in the future.

Stable View Partnerships: StableFeed

StableFeed began in the kitchen of founder Mary Hartman, who was searching for a way to restore the health of her own horse. That journey led beyond traditional nutrition and into a deeper exploration of the relationship between plants, the equine microbiome, and systemic health. Along the way, StableFeed established the U.S. commercial sainfoin forage market, introducing horse owners to a forage that became the foundation of the company's nutritional philosophy.

While modern equine nutrition has traditionally focused on balancing protein, fat, fiber, vitamins, and minerals, StableFeed recognizes another important layer of biology. Every mouthful of food enters the horse's hindgut microbiome, where trillions of microorganisms respond not to ingredient names such as oats, timothy hay, beet pulp, or sainfoin, but to the chemistry those plants contain. Through microbial transformation, that chemistry becomes part of a complex biological conversation that can influence the horse's physiological systems. Guided by this systems-based approach, StableFeed develops functional food supplements, sainfoin feeds, and seasonal botanical formulations designed to support the dynamic relationship between diet, the microbiome, microbial metabolites, and the horse. At StableFeed, food is more than fuel, it is biological information. In November 2020, Hartman contacted Stable View to inquire about vendor opportunities to introduce sainfoin to the equestrian community. What she discovered was far more than a premier equestrian venue. Stable View had cultivated a culture that valued innovation, education, environmental stewardship, and meaningful partnerships, principles that closely mirrored StableFeed's own philosophy. Barry Olliff responded personally, welcoming this small, emerging company, and provided an opportunity to present sainfoin at a private event attended by some of the nation's leading riders. What initially seemed like an extraordinary act of generosity soon revealed itself to be characteristic of both Barry and Cyndy Olliff, whose commitment to supporting new ideas and the people behind them is part of the Stable View experience.

More than five years later, that first conversation has grown into a lasting partnership rooted in a shared belief that caring for horses also means caring for the land, the science, and the entire community that supports equestrian sports.
