In 1987, as the era of electronic pop and New Romantics was reaching its culmination, Anglo-American group Johnny Hates Jazz were catapulted to success with the release of their single Shattered Dreams. Their album Turn Back The Clock entered the UK charts at number one and went double platinum. In 2010, original members Clark Datchler and Mike Nocito decided to come back together to write, record and produce a brand new Johnny Hates Jazz album for the modern era. Maggie Bell (Stone the Crows) and Dave Kelly (The Blues Band) renewed their partnership last year after a two year lay-off and are now touring the UK in 2016. Their on-stage chemistry is immediately apparent and stems from their love and respect for the music they play. Although both coming originally out of the blues/soul explosion of the late 1960s, their repertoire is far broader than just that. When they first got together they just wanted to sing any song that took their fancy, and so their set includes folk, rock, country, gospel as well as blues and soul.

As well as being a successful performer, songwriter and teacher, Joanna Eden mentored the young Sam Smith for nine years and learned much about the emergence of an artist in that time. In this session Joanna will explore what it means to be an artist, what does it mean to live a life of joyful music making and can an artist’s struggle to emerge and be appreciated by music lovers and by the music industry sometimes mean a loss of creative identity.

For Joanna music is much more than a career; it’s a way of life, and she hopes to encourage singers to face their fears and see themselves not just as singers but as true artists! Joanna believes we all need mentors and we can all become mentors, and when we find and make friends with our true inner-artist we become a bigger, fuller and better person. All these philosophies will be explored in a mix of presentation, talk, discussion, vocal warm ups and – of course – in song!

Participants should have some solo performance experience, some songwriting experience and be familiar with harmonising. Some preparation material will be sent out prior to the workshop. Please note this is not a songwriting workshop or singing technique workshop as such, and is not suitable for absolute beginners, but is an opportunity for those who have already begun to explore their own performing and songwriting identity.

Fingerpicking Country Blues Guitar with Michael Roach Adult/age 15+ Workshop

Date: Saturday 30 April, 1-4pm Workshop fee: £25 A chance to develop your fingerpicking skills to play country blues and ragtime guitar, looking at chords used in a blues song form and techniques for developing rhythm. Players will learn how to pick out the melody lines with your finger while your thumb is

alternating the bass line.

The workshop if suitable for guitarists with some experience of playing and who are beginning to fingerpick. You should know the chords in the key of C (C, F and G ) and key of E (E, A, and B7) and be able to change confidently between the chord shapes. You do not need to be able to read music as all learning will be by ear, but some written notes in the form of tab will be given to help. You will need to bring a 6 string acoustic guitar.

Gypsy Jazz Guitar Adult/15+ Workshop

15–24 July 10 amazing days

Date: Saturday 25 June, 10am-4pm Workshop fee: £34 Gypsy jazz guitar is the swing style of jazz guitar often associated with its most famous player Django Reinhardt. This workshop will introduce some of the fundamentals of this unique and enjoyable style of guitar and will focus on technique of rhythm playing, known as ‘La Pompe’, and particularly the right-hand technique based around the use of a very heavy pick. It is suitable for beginners and intermediate players who can play basic bar, triad and dominant chords and are comfortable understanding basic chord progression and theory. Learning will be by ear and there is no need to read music, though notes will be given to take away after the workshop. You will need to bring a steel-strung acoustic guitar and heavy/hard pick (some picks will be available to buy at the workshop). Tutor Will Ballard has been performing and playing guitar for 40 years, and in recent years has been playing and studying in Europe with Fapy Lafertin who teaches in the ‘manouche’ gypsy jazz guitar tradition.

From orchestral playing to jazz improvisation, from harmonica sessions to steel pan performance, from music theatre production to recorder and rock bands, the National Youth Music Camps has it all.

Tickets are sold by The Stables Theatre Ltd subject to the following terms and conditions: 1) Tickets are sold on behalf of The Stables Theatre Ltd for itself or as agent for other promoters. 2) Tickets cannot be refunded except on the cancellation or substantial alteration of the performance. The Stables may be able to resell tickets when shows are sold out – a charge of £2.80 will apply (charge waived for Stables Founders and Friends only where The Stables Theatre Ltd is the promoter. 3) The Promoter reserves the right to refuse admission to any venue if it reasonably considers such refusal to be necessary for the safety and convenience of other customers or for the proper running of the venues and events.

4) Latecomers cannot be admitted until a suitable break or interval in the performance. 5) Smoking is not permitted in any part of a venue unless designated as a smoking area. 6) Every effort is made to present shows at suitable sound levels, however levels may vary according to artists’ requirements, over which the Promoter has no control and concerts may be loud. The Promoter has no control over this. 10) Internet ticket sales are subject to booking fees and transaction charges which are levied to cover the cost of third party web/financial service providers and as such cannot be refunded. 11) By purchasing and/or using a ticket you consent for yourself and for any person using a ticket purchased by you to being photographed, filmed or recorded as an audience member when official photography, filming or audio recording is taking place.
