Their album Turn Back The Clock entered the UK charts at number one and went double platinum. In 2010, original members Clark Datchler and Mike Nocito decided to come back together to write, record and produce a brand new Johnny Hates Jazz album for the modern era. Maggie Bell (Stone the Crows) and Dave Kelly (The Blues Band) renewed their partnership last year after a two year lay-off and are now touring the UK in 2016. Their on-stage chemistry is immediately apparent and stems from their love and respect for the music they play. Although both coming originally out of the blues/soul explosion of the late 1960s, their repertoire is far broader than just that. Kelly Oliver made a life-changing decision to pursue a career performing her own material while travelling in Rio in 2013. On her return she explored local singer-songwriter opportunities and was immediately offered a slot at Hitchin Folk Club and soon after, a place in their club tent at Cambridge Folk Festival. The Telegraph gave Kelly’s debut album, This Land, a four-star review and included it on their top folk albums of 2014. Kelly also won Solo Singer of the Year at the NMG Awards kellyoliver.co.uk
Hailing from the US, guitarist and vocalist Hitman is the real deal and has a strikingly charismatic personality. A very special opportunity for emerging and developing singer-songwriters. As well as being a successful performer, songwriter and teacher, Joanna Eden mentored the young Sam Smith for nine years and learned much about the emergence of an artist in that time. In this session Joanna will explore what it means to be an artist, what does it mean to live a life of joyful music making and can an artist’s struggle to emerge and be appreciated by music lovers and by the music industry sometimes mean a loss of creative identity. For Joanna music is much more than a career; it’s a way of life, and she hopes to encourage singers to face their fears and see themselves not just as singers but as true artists! Joanna believes we all need mentors and we can all become mentors, and when we find and make friends with our true inner-artist we become a bigger, fuller and better person. All these philosophies will be explored in a mix of presentation, talk, discussion, vocal warm ups and – of course – in song! Participants should have some solo performance experience, some songwriting experience and be familiar with harmonising. Some preparation material will be sent out prior to the workshop. Please note this is not a songwriting workshop or singing technique workshop as such, and is not suitable for absolute beginners, but is an opportunity for those who have already begun to explore their own performing and songwriting identity. We’ll look at the nature of musical sound and tone, tuning, temperament, transposing between keys, different clefs and time signatures, more complex harmony and chords as well as arranging for different instruments. It is strongly recommended that you attend Part 1 before attending this workshop. Please note this day is more of a tutorial than a hands-on workshop, and includes supporting notes. Saxophone from Scratch Adult/15+ Workshop

Do you want to try it for the first time or have a go before buying one? Starting with the absolute basics, this workshop takes you on a on a step-by-step approach to making your first sounds, breathing tips, exercises, learning fingerings and scale patterns and playing simple melodies from those scales. No previous musical experience is required. You’ll be in a small group of beginners and in a friendly and supportive learning environment. Instruments are provided for use in the workshop, but if you have your own you are welcome to bring it along for advice and comparison, especially if it is one you may be practicing on after the workshop. Date: Sunday 17 April, 10am-3pm Workshop fee: £36 The mandolin is a popular instrument used in a range of styles including country, bluegrass, traditional folk and Irish music. It is great as a melody or rhythm instrument and this workshop will introduce both styles of playing. It will look at basic technique, simple tunes, chord shapes and progressions, and playing as a group and is suitable for those who have some basic experience of stringed instruments (such as guitar, ukulele, banjo, bazouki, violin) and who can play basic open chords and a few scales or tunes. Fingerpicking Country Blues Guitar with Michael Roach Adult/age 15+ Workshop
Date: Saturday 30 April, 1-4pm Workshop fee: £25 A chance to develop your fingerpicking skills to play country blues and ragtime guitar, looking at chords used in a blues song form and techniques for developing rhythm. Players will learn how to pick out the melody lines with your finger while your thumb is
alternating the bass line. The workshop if suitable for guitarists with some experience of playing and who are beginning to fingerpick. You should know the chords in the key of C (C, F and G ) and key of E (E, A, and B7) and be able to change confidently between the chord shapes. You do not need to be able to read music as all learning will be by ear, but some written notes in the form of tab will be given to help. You will need to bring a 6 string acoustic guitar. Michael Roach is the Founder/Director of Blues Week (now in its 16th year) held at the University of Northampton. Date: Saturday 11 June, 10am- 4pm Workshop fee: £32 This fast-paced workshop is designed to de-mystify the process of making up the chords to a song and to help you learn how chords are made up and put together in a sequence. You will look at examples of popular songs in different styles in both major and minor keys, starting with simple chord sequences and then progressing to more advanced ones, exploring how these can add extra colour and depth to your music-making. Suitable for guitarists, keyboard players and anyone else wanting to make up chords to songs, the workshop includes a hands-on opportunity to try out the techniques you need to make up your own chord progressions. Gypsy Jazz Guitar Adult/15+ Workshop
15–24 July 10 amazing days
Date: Saturday 25 June, 10am-4pm Workshop fee: £34 Gypsy jazz guitar is the swing style of jazz guitar often associated with its most famous player Django Reinhardt. This workshop will introduce some of the fundamentals of this unique and enjoyable style of guitar and will focus on technique of rhythm playing, known as ‘La Pompe’, and particularly the right-hand technique based around the use of a very heavy pick. It is suitable for beginners and intermediate players who can play basic bar, triad and dominant chords and are comfortable understanding basic chord progression and theory. Learning will be by ear and there is no need to read music, though notes will be given to take away after the workshop. You will need to bring a steel-strung acoustic guitar and heavy/hard pick (some picks will be available to buy at the workshop). Tutor Will Ballard has been performing and playing guitar for 40 years, and in recent years has been playing and studying in Europe with Fapy Lafertin who teaches in the ‘manouche’ gypsy jazz guitar tradition. Tickets are sold by The Stables Theatre Ltd subject to the following terms and conditions: 1) Tickets are sold on behalf of The Stables Theatre Ltd for itself or as agent for other promoters. 2) Tickets cannot be refunded except on the cancellation or substantial alteration of the performance. The Stables may be able to resell tickets when shows are sold out – a charge of £2.80 will apply (charge waived for Stables Founders and Friends only where The Stables Theatre Ltd is the promoter. 3) The Promoter reserves the right to refuse admission to any venue if it reasonably considers such refusal to be necessary for the safety and convenience of other customers or for the proper running of the venues and events. 4) Latecomers cannot be admitted until a suitable break or interval in the performance. 5) Smoking is not permitted in any part of a venue unless designated as a smoking area. 6) Every effort is made to present shows at suitable sound levels, however levels may vary according to artists’ requirements, over which the Promoter has no control and concerts may be loud. Refunds will not be given on a matter of personal taste or noise level experienced. 7) The Promoter presents a range of seated and standing events and cannot always guarantee uninterrupted views as the stage setup, as determined by the artist, may vary and some people may stand around you. 8) Some performances may have a support artist before the main act and the Promoter may not know this in advance. 9) Some artists may use strong language. The Promoter has no control over this. 10) Internet ticket sales are subject to booking fees and transaction charges which are levied to cover the cost of third party web/financial service providers and as such cannot be refunded. 11) By purchasing and/or using a ticket you consent for yourself and for any person using a ticket purchased by you to being photographed, filmed or recorded as an audience member when official photography, filming or audio recording is taking place.
