Rootsy singer-songwriter Lilly Hiatt had a lot to live up to when she chose to make music her career – her father is John Hiatt, one of America’s leading songwriters. She made her recording debut in 2008, singing backing vocals on her father’s album Same Old Man and also began playing out with her own band. In 2011, Lilly Hiatt & the Dropped Ponies released their debut album, Let Down. After plenty of touring, Lilly returned in 2015 with her second album, Royal Blue. Learn to Play Day is all about the belief that everyone should have the opportunity to learn to play music. Across the UK, Learn to Play Day offers free taster lessons on a large array of musical instruments – in 2017 more than 12,000 free lessons were given to novices and musicians alike. Many people would love to try out an instrument before committing to buy, and this is where The Stables, in association with renowned musical instrument manufacturer Korg, have come to the rescue! There will be short taster lessons on the day allowing you to try your hand at playing keyboards, drums and guitars. The mandolin is a popular instrument used in a range of styles including country, bluegrass, traditional folk and Irish music. It is great as a melody or rhythm instrument and this workshop will introduce both styles of playing. It will look at basic technique, simple tunes, chord shapes and progressions, and playing as a group and is suitable for those who have some basic experience of stringed instruments (such as guitar, ukulele, banjo, bazouki, violin) and who can play basic open chords and a few scales or tunes. Fingerpicking Country Blues Guitar with Michael Roach Adult/15+ Workshop Date: Saturday 28 April, 1-4pm Workshop fee: £26 A chance to develop your finger-picking skills to play country blues and ragtime guitar, looking at chords used in a blues song form and techniques for developing rhythm. You will learn how to pick out the melody lines with your finger while your thumb is alternating the bass line. Suitable for guitarists with some experience of playing and who are beginning to fingerpick, you should know the chords in the key of C (C, F and G ) and key of E (E, A, and B7) and be able to change confidently between the chord shapes. You do not need to be able to read music as all learning will be by ear, but some written notes in the form of tab will be given to help. Please bring a six-string acoustic guitar along with you. Introduction to Live Sound Engineering Adult/15+ Workshop Date: Saturday 5 May, 10am-4pm Workshop fee: £40 Are you an aspiring sound engineer? Or a musician who wants to understand how to use PA and get a better sound at your gigs? This workshop offers a basic introduction to the world of live sound engineering and will look at different types of microphone and placement, basic parts of a PA and how to use a mixing desk and basic EQ. It is suitable for complete beginners or for those who have gaps in their understanding of live sound.

Beginners Conga Drumming Adult/Age15+ Workshop Date: Sunday 6 May, 2.30-5.30pm Workshop fee: £24 An ideal workshop for anyone new to hand drumming or interested in finding out more about conga drumming or Latin-American rhythms. We’ll look at basic techniques including palm/finger movements and hand shapes for producing open tones, bass tones and slap, as well as exercises for developing tone, independence and coordination. You’ll also learn some Brazilian and Cuban rhythms, with parts for one, two three drums and how the individual lines fit together with bell patterns and the ‘clave’ rhythm.

Basic Principles of Music Adult/15+ Workshop Date: Saturday 12 May, 10am-4pm Workshop fee: £33 Whether you are a beginner looking for a way into understanding music, or an intermediate or experienced musician looking for a refresher or to fill gaps in your knowledge, this information-packed day aims to help you de-mystify music theory. Starting with the most basic terminology and theory, the workshop covers the nature of sound, how music started, what the key of a song is and how to find it and what some of the more complicated ideas mean. The day will be particularly helpful to those taking their first steps in learning to play, whatever the instrument. Please note this day is more of a tutorial than a hands-on workshop, and includes supporting notes.

Unlock your creative potential as a songwriter with a day of inspiring techniques lead by singer-songwriter Sara Spade. Whether you already play an instrument or are just interested in the lyrics, this course aims to give you the tools you need to get started, get crafting and finish your own songs, in a safe and fun atmosphere. In individual and co- writing exercises you will share your songs and begin to develop the openness and ability to give and listen to constructive feedback. We will also analyse some of your favourite songs, their structure, elements and what it is that makes them work for you, so you can think about other approaches to songwriting. You’ll also look at some of the areas where songwriters need help, such as how to ignore ‘the self-critic’, healthy writers’ habits, listening to the inner voice, ‘noticing’ good ideas, throwing ideas away, developing your identity and unblocking a ‘writer’s block’. If you play an instrument please bring it along. Some keyboards are available – contact education@stables.org if you think you may need one.

Have you ever wanted to have a go on the guitar but are not sure where to start? Or maybe you’d like to buy one but you’re not sure what to look for? This workshop aims to give absolute beginners a great starting point, with lots of information and advice, including how to start playing and practicing, and advice on buying a guitar and avoiding costly mistakes. You’ll learn about the different parts of the guitar, tuning, ‘open’ chords, understanding ‘tab’, using a capo, and how to strum to simple songs, as well as useful ‘non-playing exercises’ to help develop playing technique. There will be a small amount of playing on the day at a level suitable for absolute beginners – if you have a guitar, bring it along. Some guitars will be available for you to try on the day.

Ukulele Workshop: Beginners Part 2 Adult/15+ Workshop Date: Saturday 26 May, 10am-3pm Workshop fee: £35 Tutor Sara Spade returns with a chance for ukulele players to improve their skills. Building on Beginners Part1 this workshop will help you to develop your rhythm and melody playing skills, add new chords and combine different strokes for rhythmic effects. Using a mix of contemporary and vintage material, you’ll also get the chance to practice as a ukulele band and try out playing the melody, accompanying and adding colour to the musical arrangements. Previous attendance at Ukulele Beginners Part 1 is recommended and you will need to bring a soprano or concert-sized ukulele.

Join regular blues tutor Joff Watkins plus a guest tutor for this rare opportunity to really get to grips with performing the blues. Working in groups and in pairs you will explore playing blues and improvising in different keys, how to accompany soloists and how to back up and support others in a group, as well as techniques, scales, riffs, licks, fills, melody and bass line playing. Access information The Stables welcomes people with disabilities. For full access information, please visit the information section on our website at www.stables.org The Stables is accessible to wheelchair users and other customers with limited mobility. Facilities for Hearing Impaired Customers The main auditorium is fitted with an Ampetronic system. To use this system you must have a hearing aid with either a switchable or auto-detect T-Setting built in. Stage 2 customers will need to wear a hearing necklace, available from the box office. If you wear a hearing device please inform a member of the box office team when booking your tickets so that they can seat you in the area of the auditorium where the signal is strongest.
