This Christmas, Proteus Theatre Company cordially invites you to follow them down the rabbit hole to The Stables for some amazing adventures in Wonderland – oh, and tea, of course.

No storm in a teacup, this show promises to provide all your six impossible things a day, so whatever you do – don’t be late! And if you stick around after the performance then you may also get the chance to meet the cast and characters at the front of the stage.

From the artistic team behind last year’s popular production of The Secret Garden, Proteus will once again be bringing their trademark fusion of music, physical theatre, circus and puppetry creating an anarchic, magical and mad-as-a-hatter version of Lewis Carroll’s classic tales Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through The Looking Glass.

Stray Brazilian piano star Taubkin has been making waves with his sensual mix of lush traditional arrangements laced with cutting-edge technique and contemporary harmony. Here he teams up with exhilarating and innovative percussionist Adewale, who has shared the stage with Seu Jorge, Oliver Mtukudzi and Jools Holland among others. Their work together evolves around the play of push and pull between two instruments which are often considered the backbone of bossa nova. Stray were originally formed by four schoolfriends back in 1966. In 1970 they released their first album, simply titled Stray, and became a hugely popular act on the club scene in the UK and Europe. With 11 studio albums and three live albums under their belt, the band make a welcome return to The Stables to perform a selection of music from over the years. Founder member Del Bromham on guitar and vocals is joined by Karl Randall on drums and a relatively new boy on bass guitar and vocals, Robbie Stewart-Mathews, who among others has played for Cherry Lee Mewis and her Blues Gems. www.stray-the-band.co.uk

His career spans four decades as a key figure in British music. A fantastic folk-pop songwriter with an interest in jazz, Devon was born on a hippie commune in Ontario in 1982 but soon moved to a Virginia-based commune and ecovillage called Twin Oaks. She’s lived in the area ever since.

Her first UK release (her third in the US), 2007’s Keep Your Silver Shined, proved an indie hit for her Coventry-based label Tin Angel Records, topping year-end lists and landing her a spot on Later... with Jools Holland.

More than 28 years after they were named Brightest Hope and Best New Group by British music publications Melody Maker and Sounds, Wishbone Ash’s following and influence continue unabated. In 2002 founder members Andy Powell and Ted Turner were voted among the top 20 guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone magazine and the group’s albums continue to sell well around the world.

Born in Dungiven in 1975, Cara was brought up in a close musical family immersed in the rich cultural heritage of her native County Derry. She went on to sing with Oige, De Dannan and then Equation. It was in this band that she met her husband and musical collaborator Sam Lakeman. The combination of Cara’s expressive vocals and Lakeman’s rippling piano and fresh production squeezed new life into ancient material. Whether she’s singing her native traditional songs of lost love and emigration or their original compositions, you will be hard pressed to find a more emotive and captivating performer. Her autumn tour will showcase the songs on her new album scheduled for release in October.

Founded by Leee John in the early 1980s Imagination soon became one of the most successful funk bands of the decade. Lead singer Leee John recaptures the spirit of their early success with a special concert celebrating the greatest hits of Imagination. Including the two new singles/ tracks Truth and Krash. The new Greatest Hits album will be released in October via Sony Music.

Andy has enjoyed three sell-out national tours and in 2009 he released his debut DVD Britain’s Got Idiots, which was followed up by Gruntled in 2011. He started in TV on Spitting Image, becoming one of the main writers before embarking on a stand-up career which has led to such shows as BBC Two’s Mock The Week and BBC One’s Live at the Apollo. Transformation is also the theme behind the second work from Music in the Round’s associate composer Charlie Piper, as he uses newly restored archive film from the British Film Institute to explore the process and art of steel-making.

Go West had their first hit We Close Our Eyes in 1985, the first of many including Call Me, Goodbye Girl and Don’t Look Down. They won a BRIT award for Best Newcomer in 1986 and this was followed by tracks on the multi-million selling soundtrack albums - Rocky IV, Nightmare On Elm Street and White Men Can’t Jump. The 90s started with them acquiring the opening track King Of Wishful Thinking on the hugely successful Pretty Woman soundtrack album and this was then followed by three top-five USA hits - Faithful, What You Won’t Do For Love & Still In Love. At the end of 2012 they released their Greatest Hits DVD Frame By Frame which entered the UK DVD charts at No 5.

In the tradition of telling ghost stories at Christmas time, Crows’ Bones is a mesmerising collection of ghost songs old and new, pinpointing the essence of what is most beautiful and unsettling in the folk genre. Led by Lau accordionist Martin Green, it is performed by a specially assembled group of folk luminaries made up of Becky Unthank (The Unthanks), nykelharpist Niklas Roswall and singer Inge Thomson (Karine Polwart band). Drawing together songs of murderous visitations and unnatural happenings, Crows’ Bones takes you deep into a musical hinterland of broken music boxes and twisted gramophones to reveal the dark heart of folk song.

Softly softly is not a maxim that King King are familiar with. Drawing on traditional English dance tunes, the workshop will introduce basic technique, how to play with rhythm and feel and with other musicians. UKE and Sing - Using ukulele and song with children’s groups Adult/15+ Course

Dates: Saturdays 5, 12, 19 & 26 October, 10.30am-12 noon Course fee: £47 for four sessions Suitable for anyone working in education, childcare workers, out-of-school club leaders, parents and grandparents who want to learn how to teach the ukulele and singing to children. Beginning with just one chord and various clapping and action songs and musical games, you will build your confidence to lead a ukulele club or whole class ukulele and singing lesson. Learning will be aural and visual. You do not need to be able to read music but you will look at how to read chord boxes, tablature and how notation works. The course includes a copy of the UKE and Sing book and CD. You will need to bring a soprano or concert-sized ukulele.

Sue Snell is a musician and music educationalist with a wide experience of teaching groups in both singing and instrumental work, and in running training for teachers with or without a music background.

Basic Principles of Music Adult/15+ Workshop

Date: Saturday 12 October, 10am-4pm Workshop fee: £32 An information-packed day aimed at de-mystifying music theory – whether you are a beginner looking for a way into understanding music, or an intermediate or experienced musician looking for a refresher or to fill gaps in your knowledge.

Starting with the most basic terminology and theory, the day covers the nature of sound, how music started, pitch, scales and chords, what the ‘key’ of a song means and how to find it, and what some of the more complicated ideas mean.

The course will be particularly helpful to those taking their first steps in learning to play, whatever the instrument. You do not need to bring your instrument but if you do have an acoustic guitar, please bring it along. This is a fast-paced workshop day, but full supporting notes and resources will be supplied. Course leader Pete Normanton is a highly experienced musician and guitar teacher, specialising in making music accessible to non-musicians.

Drawing on traditional and popular Cuban and Brazilian styles, it will help to increase your confidence in playing congas. Each 75 - minute event gives families the opportunity to hear and play live music, dance and create masks in a relaxed and friendly environment. Concerts are informal with seating around tables with colouring activities.

The music will be performed by talented pianist Derek Paravicini (who is blind and has severe learning difficulties) with The Manchester Reed Quintet, a superb group of professional musicians. Create’s workshop leader will be there to encourage everyone to get involved through singing, dancing and movement.

There is lots of space for movement, and percussion instruments are handed out during the event so that families can join in the music-making and have fun!

Ukulele tutor Sara Spade returns with a chance for ukulele players to develop their playing in this new workshop.

Building on Beginners Part 1, it will help you develop your rhythm and melody playing skills, adding new chords, techniques and combining different strokes for rhythmic effects. Using a mix of contemporary and vintage material, you’ll also have a chance to practice as a ukulele band and take on the different roles of accompanying, melody and adding colour to the musical arrangements.

Today we will go into 12-bar progressions, the blues scale and shuffle rhythms in more depth, through tunes by Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Jimmy Reed and John Lee Hooker. You will need to bring a six-string acoustic guitar. Prior attendance on Beginners Part 1 is recommended. Joff is an accomplished blues player who combines a performing and teaching career in both harmonica and guitar, including leading the highly popular blues harmonica workshops here at The Stables.

The Full English at The Stables The Full English is a major new project from EFDSS (English Folk Dance & Song Society) to create the world’s biggest free digital archive of traditional English folk songs, tunes, dances and customs. A national programme of workshops, lectures, training and community events has been inspired by this new resource.

The Stables is delighted to be working with EFDSS to bring The Full English events to this region.

Folk Song in England Study Day For ages 15+

Date: Saturday 16 November, 10am-4pm Tickets: £10 (includes refreshments and sandwich lunch) A one-day course aimed primarily at people who already have a liking for, or interest in, English folk song and who would like to learn more about its roots, development and the essential part it has played in communities in this country.

Although ideal for those with little or no knowledge of the subject, intermediate students will also find plenty to interest and entertain them. There will be the opportunity to hear rarely played archival field-recordings of singers from up and down the country, as well as the chance to see archival film. There will also be time for questions and discussion.

The focus will be on the historical, social and personal contexts of folk singing rather than its technical musical attributes. No musical ability is necessary, and no singing required. Course leaders Steve Roud and John Howsen are leading collectors, researchers and writers on English folk music and traditions.

How to Make up Chord Sequences Adult/15+ Workshop

Date: Saturday 30 November, 10am-4pm Course fee: £32 Making up the chords to a song is often thought of as complicated. This fast-paced workshop is designed to demystify the process and help you learn how chords are made up and put together in a sequence. It will look at examples of popular songs in different styles in both major and minor keys, starting with simple chord sequences and progressing to more advanced, and looking at when and
