From the artistic team behind last year’s popular production of The Secret Garden, Proteus will once again be bringing their trademark fusion of music, physical theatre, circus and puppetry creating an anarchic, magical and mad-as-a-hatter version of Lewis Carroll’s classic tales Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through The Looking Glass.

No storm in a teacup, this show promises to provide all your six impossible things a day, so whatever you do – don’t be late! And if you stick around after the performance then you may also get the chance to meet the cast and characters at the front of the stage.

The Northern Soul Tour

Jaki Graham is one of the greatest soul singers to emerge from the UK. Hamish Stuart shot to fame in the 1970s as the falsetto voice and guitarist of the Average White Band, his distinctive song-writing and vocal and guitar style helping to pave the way for AWB’s extraordinary worldwide success. Most notably, in the late 80s he joined Paul McCartney’s band as guitarist for six years and several albums. Britten’s Six Metamorphoses after Ovid depicts six short stories of love and transformation and is performed here alongside a specially commissioned film that reflects and responds to the piece. Transformation is also the theme behind the second work from Music in the Round’s Associate Composer Charlie Piper, as he uses newly restored archive film from the British Film Institute to explore the process and art of steel-making.

The concert will be preceded at 7pm by a free screening of The Way to the Sea, a remarkable public information film documenting the building of the London to Portsmouth railway line in the 1930s with music by Britten and words by WH Auden.

The Galleons are a six-piece Indie-Folk band from Brighton.

Their melodic, spell-binding music cuts a dash between traditional British Folk and modern Indie. As at home playing in a candle-lit cellar as they are in a sunny festival field, their music takes the audience from catchy, foot stomping folk-rock, to mellow, mysterious lullabies and back. Eileen Rose is an Irish-American singer-songwriter from Boston. Eileen’s music is versatile to say the least - an Americana singer one minute, a folk singer the next, an old-fashioned rockstar another. Eileen now resides back home in Boston after living life in England for a number of years.

Award-winning Malawian comedian Daliso Chaponda began his career in 2004 headlining the Don’t Let Them Deport Me comedy show as a plea to officials to have his Canadian visa extended. The show was sold out, well reviewed and frenzied letters were written to bureaucrats but he was forced to leave after one final show, 2005’s They’re Deporting Him Anyway.

He has since gone on to work as a writer and comedian in Africa and the UK. A versatile comedian equally comfortable talking politics, romance, filth or religion, he has performed in churches, casinos and strip clubs as well as across the UK comedy circuit.

For aspiring rock and pop musicians who would like the chance to play in a band, meet other musicians and learn from experienced tutors. Whatever your instrument, whether you are a bedroom-guitarist, a budding vocalist or interested in forming a band of your own, The Rock Experience is a great opportunity to take the first steps.

You’ll be supported and coached by our tutors in rehearsal and performance skills, finishing on the final Sunday with a gig on The Stables stage.

You need to have some experience of playing your instrument and to be confident enough to have a go playing alongside other people, but no previous band experience is necessary. Sing and Strum Part 2: Beyond the Basics Adult/15+ Workshop

Dates: Saturdays 15, 22, 29 June & 6 July, 10am-12noon Tickets: course fee £42 for four sessions Judy Barker returns to guide you in developing the skills and confidence to enjoy making music with children.

Building on Sing and Strum Part 1, participants will explore new chords, strumming patterns, songs and harmonies. This course is also suitable for anyone who already knows a few basic chords and strums on the guitar. Teachers, parents and grandparents, other carers and early years workers are all welcome. You don’t need to be able to read music − all you need is enthusiasm and an adult-size nylon strung (Classical) guitar. All participants will receive a CD and song pack. Tea/coffee provided.

TG Collective

Come and take part in the ukulele revival! This fun and accessible instrument is making a comeback for serious musicians as well as in education. Learn the basics of playing, techniques and how to accompany songs.

Tutor Sara Spade is an experienced performer, songwriter and teacher. As well as enjoying a busy performing career, she regularly teaches guitar, ukulele and songwriting to all ages. She brings the ukulele up to date as an instrument to accompany contemporary songs, as well keeping it rooted in a tradition of performing authentic vintage material.

No previous experience necessary but you will need to bring a soprano or concert-sized ukulele. Tea/coffee provided.

Basic Principles of Music Adult/15+ Workshop

Date: Saturday 29 June, 10am−4pm Tickets: course fee £32 An information-packed day that aims to demystify music theory – whether you are a beginner looking for a way into understanding music, or an intermediate or experienced musician looking for a refresher or to fill gaps in your knowledge. Starting with basic terminology and theory, the workshop covers the nature of sound, how music started, pitch, scales and chords, what the key of a song is and how to find it, and what some of the more complicated ideas mean. The day will be particularly helpful to those taking their first steps in learning to play, whatever the instrument. (You don’t need to bring your instrument but if you do have an acoustic guitar, please bring it along).

In this very practical workshop, blues musician Joff Watkins demystifies V-IV-Is, turnarounds, shuffles and basic basslines, and introduces fundamental blues techniques such as finger-picking, hammer-ons and pulloffs, using examples from classic blues recordings. Joff is an accomplished blues player who combines performing and teaching, including leading the highly popular blues harmonica workshops at The Stables. You will need to bring a six-string acoustic guitar. Tea/coffee provided. Snack bar open at lunchtime.

The cajon (wooden box), the smallest drum kit in the world, is the perfect accompanying instrument for any kind of band, be it blues, hip hop, boogie, rock, pop, folk or Latin, providing a full snare and rich bass sound. Cajones come in various shapes, sizes and styles and during this one-day workshop you’ll get hands-on experience to fully discover the range of possibilities this versatile instrument can provide.

Covering tones, exercises and rhythms, this workshop is suitable for kit drummers and hand drummers alike.

Please bring a cajon (with snare) if you have one, or contact education@stables.org if you need to borrow one (limited numbers available).

John Bowman’s popular one-day introduction is ideal for beginners or those who want a refresher. Expert melodeon player Simon Care is back with another chance to try the small but mighty squeezebox, with instruments provided so that beginners can have their first go. Drawing on traditional English dance tunes, the workshop will introduce basic technique, how to play with rhythm and feel and how to play with other musicians.

4) Latecomers cannot be admitted until a suitable break or interval in the performance. 5) Smoking is not permitted in any part of a venue unless designated as a smoking area. 6) Every effort is made to present shows at suitable sound levels, however levels may vary according to artists’ requirements, over which the Promoter has no control and concerts may be loud. Refunds will not be given on a matter of personal taste or noise level experienced. 7) The Promoter presents a range of seated and standing events and cannot always guarantee uninterrupted views as the stage setup, as determined by the artist, may vary and some people may stand around you. 8) Some performances may have a support artist before the main act and the Promoter may not know this in advance. 9) Some artists may use strong language. The Promoter has no control over this. 10) Internet ticket sales are subject to booking fees and transaction charges which are levied to cover the cost of third party web/financial service providers and as such cannot be refunded. 11) By purchasing and/or using a ticket you consent for yourself and for any person using a ticket purchased by you to being photographed, filmed or recorded as an audience member when official photography, filming or audio recording is taking place. The Promoter means The Stables or the promoter of the event for which the ticket is sold, in which case The Stables acts as the agent of that promoter.
