Individual supporters of the Festival who dare to be di erent:

IF

you want 10 amazing days

IF is back and bigger than ever before with events taking place across Central Milton Keynes and extending out to exciting new locations including the Cathedral of Trees and Willen Lake.

The Festival is under-pinned by an ongoing theme of sound and music, and this year through large-scale spectaculars such as Fous de Bassin on Willen Lake, and intimate experiences including The Cabaret of Ideas, we encourage people to discover what divides us and what unites us.

We present new commissions from our Artist-in-Residence and choreographer Rosemary Lee working with composer Terry Mann, sonic artist Kaffe Matthews, singer Melanie Pappenheim and writer Jackie Kay. The ever-popular Spiegeltent is back and we have also created Family Focus - a series of events for children and families that celebrate the beginning of the summer holidays.

Our thanks go to Arts Council England, Milton Keynes Council and our many corporate partners and generous individual supporters who make IF possible.

I’d also like to extend special thanks to our Creative Director, Bill Gee who has worked tirelessly with us on three editions of IF and now heads off to explore pastures new. We have a fantastic Festival Team including many committed volunteers and together we invite you to enjoy IF: 2014.

Ka e Matthews: The lock shift songs

Friday 18 – Sunday 27 July, 10am – 7pm

Opposite Door 10 of centre:mk (Near the Open Market and TKMaxx)

Award-winning sound artist Kaffe Matthews has created The lock shift songs, a new sonic installation commissioned by the Canal & River Trust and IF: 2014.

In a walk along the Grand Union Canal - which connects London to Milton Keynes - Kaffe has collected sounds (including from under the water) and stories from people who use, live or work on the waterways to inspire songs and a composition that will play through a series of large ‘sonic beds’ that people can lie in for a fully immersive and sensory sound experience.

Kaffe will perform in concerts with Ray Lee inside Architects of Air’s Pentalum on Wednesday 23 July, at 7pm and 8pm - details on page 16.

She is also taking part in two IF: Talks - on Saturday 19 July and Wednesday 23 July - see pages 60 and 61.

Sonic artist Ray Lee – British Composer of the Year for Sonic Art in 2012 –has created the evocative Chorus, a giant sound installation that will be presented at three sites in Central Milton Keynes.

Chorus is an impressive series of huge metal tripods with rotating arms which tower above the audience. At the end of each arm, loudspeakers emit pulsating, harmonic sounds whilst kinetic movement creates the effect of a whirling swarm of fireflies or planets in motion.

These intersecting lights trace rings above the heads of the audience while the combined chorus of the spinning speakers creates a cohesive harmonious whole that is transfixing and uplifting.

Ray will perform in concerts with Kaffe Matthews inside Architects of Air’s Pentalum on Wednesday 23 July, at 7pm and 8pm - details on page 16.

Ray Lee and the Open University will participate in an IF: Talk on Wednesday 23 July, see page 61.

Important Site Information

Further details are on www.ifmiltonkeynes.org

Cathedral of Trees, Newlands for Rosemary Lee’s Under The Vaulted Sky Friday 18 - Sunday 20 July. Event information on pages 6 and 7

This is an outdoor, promenade and standing event - the audience will move around the Cathedral site to follow the performance, covering a distance of just under ½ a mile, including the walk from the Cathedral’s car park.

The terrain in and around the Cathedral is akin to a ‘woodland walk’ - uneven, grassy, with foliage and twigs underfoot. In inclement weather, the ground will be spongy, wet and boggy in places. Some areas may be difficult to access or of steep incline. Every effort will be made to make your visit as easy as possible although the Festival cannot guarantee access to every part of the Cathedral / performance.

If you use a self-propelled or attendant propelled wheelchair, you may require additional assistance. Please contact the Box Office on 01908 280800 so that Festival Stewards can assist if required. If you are unsteady on your feet, a ‘shooting stick’ seat will be permitted (no chairs or stools please).

Caution must be taken on site which may be dark and shaded in places. Please wear sensible shoes or stout footwear with a good undergrip.

The show is suitable for families, though under 16s must be accompanied by an adult and supervised at all times.

Please allow time for ticket purchasing if buying on the night, and allow 15 minutes to get to the assembly point where the production will start. Once the show begins, latecomers will not be admitted.

Willen Lake for Ilotopie’s Fous de Bassin (Water Fools)

Friday 18 and Saturday 19 July, 10pm. Event information on pages 10 and 11

This event takes place on water and uses naked flames and pyrotechnics. Caution must be taken on site which may be dark in places. Please walk slowly. Under16s must be accompanied by an adult and supervised at all times.
