Cellist Matthew Barley has enjoyed a unique international career full of improvisation, new music, cutting-edge computer technology, collaboration with jazz and Indian musicians, education and arranging –but always with cello playing at the heart.
Of his latest project, he says: “Light Stories was born from a wish to tell a personal story in sound and image: the tale of a near-tragic event in my teenage years. I had been wanting to compose for many years and this presented itself as an ideal vehicle for this new aspect of being a musician. The music is almost all for multi-tracked cellos, but there are also synthesiser sounds, percussion, keyboards and a collection of Brazilian birdcall pipes.”
This performance will be followed by a free, post-concert discussion.

Following the smash-hit success of his Silver Jubilee show, Luke Wright returns with a new set of poems that get to grips with the idea of joy. Is it possible, as a 42-year-old, to feel pure unbridled happiness, and, if so, what does it look like? With a mix of the comic and the wistful, Joy takes in consumerism, boozing, cancer scares, abseiling vicars and the joy of language itself. We might have to go down to come up, but we’ll get there in the end.

The Rock Experience is for aspiring rock and pop musicians who would like to take their first steps into playing in a band, and learning with other musicians by playing covers of some classic rock and pop tracks.
Open to guitarists, bassists, drummers, keyboards, singers, saxophones and other instruments. (For other instruments check with us at education@stables.org before booking.)
You need to have some experience of playing your instrument and be confident enough to have a go playing alongside other people, but no previous band experience is necessary. Players who have some previous band experiences are welcome but must join the course as an individual and be prepared to play with new people. Unfortunately we can’t take pre-existing bands on to the course. Everyone will need to be willing to have a go at different rock and pop styles. At the beginning
you’ll learn and play some classic songs that we’ve selected which are designed to ease you into playing as a group, but we’ll also ask you to suggest songs to cover later in the course.
At the first session we’ll help organize you into groups so that each group has all the main instrument parts covered. Some players may get the chance to play with more than one group if a ‘guest’ musician is needed to help cover a song.
As well as being in one main band there will opportunities for breakout sessions to look at different instrument roles, how to work with a PA and a sound engineer, how to develop rehearsal and performance skills.
If you’d like further information or advice about joining this course, contact The Stables Learning and Participation Department at education@stables.org
