Albert Lee and Hogan’s Heroes Date: Sunday 8 June, 8pm Tickets: £23 Two-time Grammy award-winning kora sensation and arguably Africa’s finest instrumentalist, Toumani Diabaté performs at the Stables alongside his 22-year-old son, rising star Sidiki. The pair have recently recorded a kora duet album together, and they will perform music from the Malian griot tradition of storytelling. Their collaboration fixes and preserves a form of musical experience that’s almost seven centuries old while at the same time renewing and refreshing it.

Having celebrated his 70th birthday at the end of 2013, double Grammy award-winner Albert Lee returns to the Stables with his multi-talented band Hogan’s Heroes (Gerry Hogan, Peter Baron, Brian Hodgson and Gavin Povey).

Albert is without doubt one of the world’s finest guitar players. To quote Eric Clapton: “he is a great, great player, fluid, lyrical and free” and “a truly wonderful singer, soulful and strong”. The Paperboys were formed by Mexican-born Tom Landa in the mid-1990s in Vancouver. In a music scene dominated by flannel and grunge, Tom had a vision of forming a band that fused folk, Celtic and bluegrass music with pop and rock. He was armed with a dozen self-penned tunes and a lot of drive and ambition. The sound of the band has evolved since the early days and it now includes horns and digs deep into Tom’s Mexican heritage by adding Son Jarocho and Afro-Mexican grooves to the mix.

Fresh from sell-out shows at Ronnie Scott’s in London and the Blue Note in Mila, Ray Gelato and his band, The Giants, bring their sensational show to the Stables. In 2009 Sam Sweeney, fiddle player with Bellowhead, bought a violin in Oxford. It had all the appearance of a new instrument but the label inside gave the date 1915 and the name Richard S Howard.

Research revealed that the violin had been made – but never finished – by a luthier and some-time music-hall performer from Leeds called Richard Spencer Howard. He had been conscripted in 1915 at the age of 35 and two years later was killed during the battle of Messines Ridge. His violin had been left unfinished in his workshop and was finally finished by luthier Roger Claridge in 2007. The fiddle was then placed in the window of an Oxford music shop where it was spotted by Sam. Discovery of the history behind the fiddle has inspired Sam to create a multimedia performance telling the incredible story of the fiddle which took nearly 100 years to complete, to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of World War 1. Collaborating with awardwinning story-teller Hugh Lupton, fellow Bellowhead band-mate Paul Sartin and acclaimed concertina player Rob Harbron, Made in the Great War will bring the reality of World War 1 into 2014, as Sam performs the show with the actual fiddle made by non-returning World War 1 soldier Richard Howard.

Working in groups and in pairs, you will explore playing and improvising in different keys, how to accompany soloists and back up and support others in a group, as well as techniques, scales, riffs, licks, fills, melody and bass line playing. How to Make up Chord Sequences

An ideal workshop for anyone new to hand-drumming or interested in finding out more about congadrumming or Latin-American rhythms.

We’ll look at basic techniques, including palm/finger movements and hand-shapes for producing open tones, bass tones and slap, as well as exercises for developing tone, independence and coordination. You will also learn some Brazillian and Cuban rhythms, with parts for one, two and three drums, as well as how the individual lines fit together with bell patterns and the clave rhythm.

Notes will also be provided. Ravin ‘Raz’ Jayasuriya is a professional percussionist and award-winning tutor with more than 20 years’ experience specialising in Cuban and Brazilian music. He runs workshops and courses for all levels of ability throughout the UK.

Making up the chords to a song is often thought of as complicated. This fast-paced workshop is designed to demystify the process and help you learn how chords are made up and put together in a sequence. It will look at examples of popular songs in different styles in both major and minor keys, starting with simple chord sequences and progressing to more advanced, and looking at when and how more complex chords can add colour and depth.

Suitable for guitarists, keyboard players and anyone else wanting to make up chords to songs, the workshop includes a hands-on opportunity to try out the techniques you need to make up your own chord progressions. Full notes will be supplied to take away.

It is recommended that participants have some understanding of scales and chords (eg from our Basic Principles of Music workshop). Guitar players should bring an acoustic guitar and capo (the workshop will also look at how to use a capo to simplify awkward chords by changing key). Some keyboards are available for keyboard players (please advise at time of booking if needed).

Tutor Pete Normanton is an experienced musician and guitar teacher who also presents the popular Basic Principles of Music Workshop at The Stables.

Building on Beginners Part 1, this new workshop will help you to develop your rhythm and melody playing, adding new chords, techniques and combining different strokes for rhythmic effects. Using a mix of contemporary and vintage material, you’ll also get the chance to practice as a ukulele band and try out accompanying, playing the melody and adding colour to the musical arrangements. Tickets are sold by The Stables Theatre Ltd subject to the following terms and conditions: 1) Tickets are sold on behalf of The Stables Theatre Ltd for itself or as agent for other promoters. 2) Tickets cannot be refunded except on the cancellation or substantial alteration of the performance. The Stables may be able to resell tickets when shows are sold out and a charge of £2.80 will apply (charge waived for Stables Founders and Friends only where The Stables Theatre Ltd is the promoter). 3) The Promoter reserves the right to refuse admission to any venue if it reasonably considers such refusal to be necessary for the safety and convenience of other customers or for the proper running of the venues and events.

4) Latecomers cannot be admitted until a suitable break or interval in the performance. 5) Smoking is not permitted in any part of a venue unless designated as a smoking area. 6) Every effort is made to present shows at suitable sound levels, however levels may vary according to artists’ requirements, over which the Promoter has no control and concerts may be loud. Refunds will not be given on a matter of personal taste or noise level experienced. 7) The Promoter presents a range of seated and standing events and cannot always guarantee uninterrupted views as the stage setup, as determined by the artist, may vary and some people may stand around you. 8) Some performances may have a support artist before the main act and the Promoter may not know this in advance. 9) Some artists may use strong language. The Promoter has no control over this. 10) Internet ticket sales are subject to booking fees and transaction charges which are levied to cover the cost of third party web/financial service providers and as such cannot be refunded. 11) By purchasing and/or using a ticket you consent for yourself and for any person using a ticket purchased by you to being photographed, filmed or recorded as an audience member when official photography, filming or audio recording is taking place.
