A double-headliner featuring two Stables favourites. Championed by Imelda May, Seasick Steve and Walter Trout, Cherry is a power-house singer-songwriter who, together with her smokin’ hot band, produces a unique sound incorporating dashes of ragtime, country blues, a couple of blades of bluegrass and a pinch of Americana. 2014 marks the release of her fourth studio album. Guitarist, vocalist and songwriter Ben is at the forefront of the European blues/rock/soul movement. He has gone from strength to strength over the past few years and his eagerly awaited, self-released debut album Let’s Go Upstairs caused such a stir that he has become very much in demand on both sides of the Atlantic. www.cherryleemewis.com www.benpooleband.com

The Paperboys were formed by Mexican-born Tom Landa in the mid-1990s in Vancouver. In a music scene dominated by flannel and grunge, Tom had a vision of forming a band that fused folk, Celtic and bluegrass music with pop and rock. He was armed with a dozen self-penned tunes and a lot of drive and ambition. The sound of the band has evolved since the early days and it now includes horns and digs deep into Tom’s Mexican heritage by adding Son Jarocho and Afro-Mexican grooves to the mix.

Fresh from sell-out shows at Ronnie Scott’s in London and the Blue Note in Mila, Ray Gelato and his band, The Giants, bring their sensational show to the Stables. Supercharged swing, rhythm and blues grooves, and jumpin’ jazz will be the order of the evening, which promises to be full of great music to uplift your spirits! The programme will include such classics such as Just a Gigolo, Everybody Loves Somebody, Night Train and My Kinda Girl. www.raygelato.com

Neil Diamond stands in a league of his own. His music and influence span more than five decades – from the 1960s, when he had hit recordings of his own as well as writing hit songs for other artists (such as I’m a Believer for The Monkees), through the Jazz Singer era, and right up to today when Neil is still as popular as ever. The Diamond Decades is a live concert show, reliving and celebrating Neil Diamond’s great music, and features a full band and JJ Jones as Neil Diamond – you will be amazed how his voice and delivery could be so close to the real thing. Come along and enjoy such great favourites as America, Holly Holy, Cherry, Cherry, Love on the Rocks, Sweet Caroline and many more. orever in Blue Jeans F 4 September

In 2009 Sam Sweeney, fiddle player with Bellowhead, bought a violin in Oxford. It had all the appearance of a new instrument but the label inside gave the date 1915 and the name Richard S Howard. Research revealed that the violin had been made – but never finished – by a luthier and some-time music-hall performer from Leeds called Richard Spencer Howard. He had been conscripted in 1915 at the age of 35 and two years later was killed during the battle of Messines Ridge. His violin had been left unfinished in his workshop and was finally finished by luthier Roger Claridge in 2007. The fiddle was then placed in the window of an Oxford music shop where it was spotted by Sam. Discovery of the history behind the fiddle has inspired Sam to create a multimedia performance telling the incredible story of the fiddle which took nearly 100 years to complete, to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of World War 1. Collaborating with awardwinning story-teller Hugh Lupton, fellow Bellowhead band-mate Paul Sartin and acclaimed concertina player Rob Harbron, Made in the Great War will bring the reality of World War 1 into 2014, as Sam performs the show with the actual fiddle made by non-returning World War 1 soldier Richard Howard. Pam Ayres brings her latest show to the Stables following the recent publication of her new book of poetry, You Made Me Late Again! Pam’s work is funny and approachable. It sounds simple, as though dashed off, but this is deceptive. Her hair-trigger timing, her eye for the detail of everyday life, and for the absurdity therein, makes for an art that hides art. Pam has sold millions of books, CDs and DVDs over the years, and she is still a regular on TV and radio, appearing on programmes such as Just A Minute, Ayres On The Air, The Paul O’Grady Show, The Alan Titchmarsh Show, Countdown and The One Show. “Her humour, which verges on the black at times, is contagious and so original” The Telegraph

Led by the irrepressible Ade Edmondson, The Bad Shepherds play punk songs on folk instruments. Not as a gag, but because they really like the noise. They do songs by The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Stranglers, The Jam, Sham 69, The Undertones, The Ramones, The Buzzcocks, The Specials, Talking Heads, Squeeze and others, even Kraftwerk. They’ve mostly given the songs a kind of Celtic feel, and they’ve stuck in the odd reel and jig here and there. But occasionally they just thrash! They’ve always thought the excitement of a reel taking off is the nearest thing to the excitement of watching punk live in the 1970s.

Championed by such high-profile fans as Bob Harris, Danny Thompson, Will Ackerman and Chuck Berry, this Edinburgh-born artist combines introspective lyricism and inventive open tunings. A few years back he was a regular member of the iconic Dougie Maclean band in Scotland, while writing and performing his own songs. Now, he has three albums under his belt, a fourth written, a publisher in Paris and management in Toronto.

It’s been little over a year since singer‐songwriter Stephanie O’Brien took her final bow with Michael Bublé’s go‐to harmony jazz group The Puppini Sisters. Since then she has transformed herself from jazz chanteuse into a fully fledged solo artist and songwriter. Her new EP, Leave Your Heart At The Door, is a four-track testament to her pursuit of a new direction. Stephanie’s music, an elegant blend of jazz and acoustic pop with folk sensibilities, possesses classic undertones evocative of early influences from Carole King to Dusty Springfield. Yet her delivery comes with a refreshingly modern twist through the use of a loop-station on stage to augment her sound, inspired by fellow multiinstrumentalists Bernhoft and Andrew Bird. www.stepahnieobrien.co.uk

Sarah Moule’s fourth CD, Noir, is released this summer. As a lyric-led singer, the main wellspring of material for her recordings has been the songs of the late American beat generation lyricist Fran Landesman and British composer and pianist Simon Wallace who features on the CD along with bassist Mick Hutton. With Wallace’s “stark, minimal arrangements” (New York Times) of classic songs by Johnny Mercer, Harold Arlen, Cole Porter and Bob Dylan radically reimagined to give a contemporary slant to the music, the result is a dynamic set of well-paced, groove-based songs with a contemporary edge.

This fast-paced workshop is designed to demystify the process and help you learn how chords are made up and put together in a sequence. It will look at examples of popular songs in different styles in both major and minor keys, starting with simple chord sequences and progressing to more advanced, and looking at when and how more complex chords can add colour and depth. Suitable for guitarists, keyboard players and anyone else wanting to make up chords to songs, the workshop includes a hands-on opportunity to try out the techniques you need to make up your own chord progressions. Full notes will be supplied to take away. It is recommended that participants have some understanding of scales and chords (eg from our Basic Principles of Music workshop). Guitar players should bring an acoustic guitar and capo (the workshop will also look at how to use a capo to simplify awkward chords by changing key). Drawing on traditional English dance tunes, the workshop will introduce basic technique, how to play with rhythm and feel, and how to play with other musicians. The day is ideal for anyone with an interest in English folk music, folk dance, or trying a squeezebox for the first time. You don’t need to be able to read music notation, and no previous squeezebox or folk music experience is required, but a basic knowledge of music (scales, chords, time signatures) will help. Notes provided. Tea/coffee provided. Snack bar open at lunchtime.
