Our Hearts Are Full with 115 Years of Saints Support

Dear Saints,

As we reflect on the 2024-25 school year, we are filled with gratitude for the generosity that shaped a truly remarkable year at St. Anne’sBelfield School. Your support powered celebrations, traditions, and innovations that will be remembered for years to come.

Together, we brought our yearlong Semicentennial Celebration to a joyful close, honoring 50 years of strong bodies, broad minds, tender hearts, and responsive souls. We launched Saints on the Road, a nationwide tour that connected hundreds of alumni to each other and their alma mater. We also celebrated excellence and legacy on campus through the first Athletics Hall of Fame induction and our second Faculty Emeriti induction β€” each strengthened by the establishment of two new endowed funds that will benefit students and teachers for generations to come.

Through your gifts, students experienced an education that stretched

beyond the classroom. Philanthropy supported professional development for faculty, expanded opportunities in athletics and the arts, and helped fuel a robust financial aid program. These collective efforts made St. Anne’s stronger, more vibrant, and more connected.

Looking ahead, we see new opportunities to build on this momentum with new initiatives that reflect the same spirit of community and generosity. Our priorities include growing the school’s endowment to ensure long-term financial sustainability and renovating the K – 4 playground. This new space will support students’ cognitive and physical development while echoing the natural aesthetic of the Early Childhood Program’s nature-inspired classrooms. Each of these efforts will advance the school’s mission and honor the legacy we’ve been entrusted to uphold. And, of course, we will invite continued support for the Fund for St. Anne’s-Belfield, which fuels all

aspects of our program.

Thank you for being part of this shared journey. Your commitment ensures that our school remains a place where every student is known, challenged, and inspired to reach their full potential. We couldn’t do it without you.

With gratitude,

Dear Loyal Supporters,

As chair of the Board of Trustees, I have a unique opportunity to observe firsthand the incredible impact St. Anne’s-Belfield has on all of our students. The School’s mission for our students to become β€œstrong in body, broad of mind, tender of heart, responsive in soul” remains our focus in everything we do. While tuition dollars are an essential resource, fulfilling this mission also depends on the generosity of our community.

Philanthropy from parents/guardians, alumni, grandparents, and friends strengthens our school and allows our students to thrive. All gifts, of all sizes, help us to:

β€’ Sustain excellence in teaching. Your contributions allow us to attract and retain dedicated faculty who inspire our students every day.

β€’ Enhance the student experience. From arts and athletics to technology and innovation, donations enrich every aspect of school life.

β€’ Secure our future. Strategic investments and endowment growth keep St. Anne’s-Belfield strong not only for today’s students, but for generations to come.

When you give to St. Anne’s-Belfield, you are investing in the promise of our young people and the future they will shape as exemplary citizens.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, thank you for believing in our mission and for partnering with us in this vital work. Together, we can ensure that our cherished St. Anne’sBelfield School continues to flourish.

The Vital Role of Philanthropy at St. Anne’s-Belfield

How your generosity sustains today and builds tomorrow

Your gifts are essential to the success and sustainability of our School. Like most independent schools, St. Anne’s-Belfield does not receive funding from state and federal governments, but rather depends on tuition and donations. We are especially grateful for your support, which enables us to fully realize our mission.

Did You Know?

Private philanthropy can be categorized into two main types: budget relieving and budget enhancing.

Budget Relieving

(Short-term Needs)

Example: Fund for St. Anne’s-Belfield

β€’ Covers tuition gap

β€’ Supports operations

β€’ Keeps tuition increases as minimal as possible

β€’ Meets immediate needs

Budget Enhancing (Long-term Growth)

Example: Endowment and capital gifts

β€’ Fuels innovation

β€’ Expands programs/facilities

β€’ Ensures sustainability

β€’ Recruit/retain faculty

β€’ Provides financial aid

Both budget-relieving and budget-enhancing donations play distinct, but critical roles. No matter the size of your gift, and whether you give for budget-relieving purposes, budgetenhancing purposes, or both β€” you are making an impact on St. Anne’s-Belfield.

If you would like to learn more about how your philanthropy can impact the lives of students and faculty, please contact Pam Winthrop or Josh McCoy in the Advancement Office at 434-296-5106.

β€œWhy I Give” β€”Myron Ripley ’86

When Myron Ripley ’86 talks about St. Anne’s-Belfield School, the love he carries for his alma mater is unmistakable. His reason for giving year after year is simple:

β€œSt. Anne’s-Belfield School changed my life.”

When asked what he would say to someone considering their first gift, his advice is heartfelt:

For Mr. Ripley, philanthropy is a family value instilled by his parents, Maxine and Marvin Ripley.

β€œWe’ve all got something that means something to us,” he says. β€œGiving is what we all should do. It doesn’t have to be financial support, but it can be.”

β€œIf the place is special to you and you want to make an impact on a young person’s life, giving to the unrestricted fund [Fund for St. Anne’s-Belfield] allows you to make an impact at any level of the student experience. You can be confident that someone β€” student, teacher, or staff β€” will feel that impact.”

Mr. Ripley transferred into St. Anne’s-Belfield School as a freshman in 1982. The transition wasn’t easy. He missed his friends and even asked Rev. George Conway, then the head of school, if he could return to his old school. Instead, he was encouraged to give it a little more time. Within weeks, Mr. Ripley found his place and, as he recalls, β€œnever looked back.”

He quickly immersed himself in campus life, playing soccer and lacrosse, joining the Gold Key Society, and serving as head of Student Government his senior year. Since graduation, Mr. Ripley’s involvement has only deepened. He served on the Alumni Council and the Board of Trustees. From 1987 to 2000 he coached boys’ soccer before transitioning to boys’ lacrosse, which he has coached since 2001. This spring, he will celebrate his 40th reunion.

Mr. Ripley sees his giving as a way to β€œpay back” the School for the experiences that shaped him β€” and to ensure today’s students can share in those same opportunities. β€œI knew when I left in 1986 that I was going to give back.”

A Golden Milestone:

Founders Day

The 2024-25 school year marked a momentous occasion as we proudly celebrated the 50th anniversary of the merger between St. Anne’s School and Belfield School. The yearlong Semicentennial Celebration honored half a century of unity, tradition, and transformation.

We launched this historic year with the inaugural Founders Day on Sept. 9, commemorating the very first day of classes at the newly merged St. Anne’s-Belfield School in 1974. More than 70 alumni, parents of alumni, and beloved faculty gathered at Common House in Charlottesville to reconnect, share stories, and celebrate the enduring legacy of our school community.

Celebrating 50 Years of St. Anne’s-Belfield School

2024-25 Faculty Emeriti Program Inductees

The Faculty Emeriti program is a way to honor those who have significantly contributed to the St. Anne’s-Belfield community through their professional work. Candidates considered are teachers or staff members who served 10+ years at our School, who have retired from education, and whose influence and presence still reverberates through our classrooms, fields, and offices.

Margaret Grove, P. ’80 (August 26, 1930 – January 12, 2025) Years served: 1974 – 1990

In every school there are people whose talents are broad and love for the school is deep, leading them to serve in a variety of positions over the course of their careers. Margaret Grove was one of those people. Mrs. Grove served the school from 1974 – 1990, and was a steadying presence during the merger of the St. Anne’s and Belfield schools in the mid-1970s. During this time she worked in a variety of administrative capacities: receptionist, leading advancement (working initially from the water heater room!), leading the newly co-ed Alumni Association (this time from an office in Lee-DuVal Hall), academic secretary, and secretary to the head of school. In the words of Kay Butterfield in β€œTeach Me Diligently,” the book detailing the history of St. Anne’s-Belfield, β€œHer bubbly manner and wholehearted devotion to St. Anne’s-Belfield made her a key member of the team and also a good ambassador to the community.” During her time at St. Anne’s-Belfield, Mrs. Grove was awarded the Headmaster’s Award as well as the Alumni Service Award. Mrs. Grove passed away at age 94 earlier this year, surrounded by family and leaving a legacy of love. Her son, alumnus John McLaughlin Grove ’80, accepted the award on her behalf.

Kathy Carpenter,

P. ’07, ’09, & ’12

Years served: 2000 – 2025

Mother of three alumni, Director of the Early Childhood Program Kathy Carpenter has been a trusted advisor to countless parents throughout her nearly 25 years at the School. Sharing wisdom and imparting calm with her refrain, β€œIt’s going to be okay,” Mrs. Carpenter has been an extraordinary educator, leader, and advocate for early childhood education not only at St. Anne’s-Belfield but also in the broader Charlottesville/Albemarle community. Her passion led to the move to outdoor learning for the Early Childhood Program during the pandemic, and the creation of the remarkable natural classrooms. The sensoryrich, thoughtfully-planned spaces are a treasure, offering our youngest students a rich, play-based learning experience, and opportunities for our full age 2 – Grade 12 community to interact, learn from and about each other, and be enriched by the many benefits that nature provides. Known for her warmth, humor, and unwavering commitment to our mission, we are deeply grateful for Mrs. Carpenter’s lasting legacy.

Pearce β€œPJ” Johnson, P. ’05 Years served: 1986 – 2025

After nearly four decades of service to the School, our beloved β€œPJ” stepped away from classroom teaching at the end of this year. During his tenure, Mr. Johnson has taught biology and environmental science to hundreds of teens, guided Capstone studies, served as science department chair, coached lacrosse, advised, served on committees, and mentored new colleagues. He was chosen by senior classes as the recipient of the Jefferson Cup and the yearbook dedication. The 1990 winner of the Diana Smith Mastership award and the 2003 winner of the Malone Prize, Mr. Johnson will remain connected to students and colleagues through a consultancy between St. Anne’s-Belfield School, the Environmental Science Senior Seminar that he launched, and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality. In this way, he will continue to share his passion for environmentalism and lend his expertise to the ongoing work of examining the quality of local watersheds to improve their overall health. We are eternally grateful for his mentorship, leadership, vision, and genuine love for school.

Carpenter Fund for Early Childhood Professional Development

Over her 25-year tenure, Director of the Early Childhood Program Kathy Carpenter, P. ’07, ’09, & ’12 built and led a team of educators who inspired, challenged, and nurtured our youngest learners. From her earliest days as a teacher through her time as director, Mrs. Carpenter sought out excellence by visiting early childhood centers, observing best practices, and continually pursuing the answer to the question, β€œWhat does great early education look like?” Her commitment to lifelong learning and hands-on discovery shaped the spirit of our Early Childhood Program β€” one rooted in curiosity, care, and continuous growth. It was her vision and determination that inspired the development of the Early Childhood natural classrooms that inspire learning. Mrs. Carpenter is beloved by families and children alike for her wisdom and constant reminder that β€œit’s going to be ok.”

In honor of her legacy and retirement in June 2025, we are proud to establish the Carpenter Fund for Early Childhood Professional Development. This fund will ensure that the educators who follow in Mrs. Carpenter’s footsteps continue to have access to the tools, training, and inspiration they need to grow and thrive, enriching the experience of every student they teach. Through professional development, teachers bring the latest research, strategies, and technologies into the classroom, keeping learning dynamic, engaging, and relevant. It also strengthens our ability to attract and retain top talent β€” educators who are eager to learn and committed to excellence. By investing in this fund, we honor Kathy Carpenter’s legacy and uphold the very values we aim to instill in our students: curiosity, growth, and a lifelong love of learning.

We’re grateful for the community members who have supported the fund thus far, and we’re eager to grow the fund with your help. Questions? Please contact Chief Advancement Officer Pam Winthrop at 434-296-5106, or at pwinthrop@stab.org.

Pearce Johnson Science Fund

After 39 years of dedicated service to the school, Pearce β€œPJ” Johnson, P. ’05, retired in June. Throughout his extraordinary tenure, PJ left an indelible mark on our community β€” teaching biology and environmental science to generations of students, guiding Capstone projects, leading as science department chair, coaching lacrosse, advising students, mentoring colleagues, and contributing thoughtfully on numerous committees. His impact has been widely recognized, including being honored with the Jefferson Cup and the dedication of the senior yearbook β€” both tributes selected by the students themselves.

At the Alumni Awards Ceremony in April, he was bestowed the honor of Faculty Emeritus. In honor of his legacy, and with his blessing, we have created the Pearce Johnson Science Fund as a lasting tribute to his impact and passion. All gifts received for this endowed fund will directly support the next generation of young scientists, giving them the tools they need to experiment, discover, and think critically β€” just as PJ taught them to do.

We’re grateful for the community members below who have supported the fund thus far, and we’re just beginning! Please join us in honoring PJ’s legacy and support student-led scientific research in perpetuity. Questions? Please contact Josh McCoy, director of development, at 434-296-5106, or at jmccoy@stab.org.

The Power of Endowments

A group of parents once asked how they could help St. Anne’s-Belfield teachers bring even more creativity into the classroom. Their answer was an endowed fund. They had seen faculty continuously strive to pursue knowledge and meet the changing needs of students, and wanted to support them. With a $50,000 commitment, they created an endowed fund for faculty summer professional development.

Today, that fund is still at work. Each year, teachers apply for summer grants to embrace new methods, expand handson learning opportunities for students, make curricular enhancements, and more. For the past several years, the grants have been fully awarded on the first day applications open.

Because it is an endowment, the families’ original $50,000 gift remains intact, while the earnings (about 5% annually) continue to shape the lives of teachers, and ultimately students, year after year. Their generosity will continue to make a difference long into the future.

How would you like to make a lasting impact in perpetuity?

At the core, endowments are a way for you to make a difference in the areas that matter most to you. Whether that’s retaining the most talented teachers; making it financially possible for more students to experience a St. Anne’s-Belfield education; supporting an academic program, the arts, or athletics; or providing flexibility for the School to fulfill its mission of educating students β€” body, mind, heart, soul β€” we would love to speak with you more about your vision for making an impact.

The initial investment required to establish a new endowment at St. Anne’s-Belfield is $50,000. This amount can be paid outright, pledged over a period of 3 – 5 years, or established through an estate gift. Funds at the School are invested with Spider Management, an investment firm owned by the University of Richmond. Once established, the endowment will remain in perpetuity, and anyone can make additional gifts to the fund. To learn more about endowment opportunities at St. Anne’s, please contact Pam Winthrop or Josh McCoy in the Advancement Office at 434-296-5106.

A planned gift to St. Anne’s can offer benefits such as significant income tax deductions, the avoidance of capital gains tax on appreciated assets, and the ability to reduce potential estate taxes. Most importantly, a planned gift creates a legacy of support that can live on in perpetuity.

Annual Giving

Your yearly gift to the Fund for St. Anne’s-Belfield directly supports the people and programs that make our community extraordinary β€” dedicated teachers, inspiring academics, vibrant arts, and a robust athletics program.

Major Gifts

For those who wish to make a larger, or more targeted impact, major gifts can be a powerful tool for improving our campus, launching innovative programs, or providing new opportunities for students.

Endowment Support

Gifts to the endowment exist in perpetuity, ensuring that generations of students will enjoy the same high-quality education and supportive community that you value today.

Planned Giving: A Legacy that Lasts

St. Anne’s-Belfield School is more than just a place of learning. For many students, families, and alumni, it’s where lifelong friendships were formed, values were shaped, and futures were launched. Planned giving provides a way to extend that impact far into the future.

In early 2025, the School received an estate gift from Jean Robertson ’45, a Charlottesville native who dedicated her life to public service and education. Robertson had worked as a reporter for WCHV, an interpreter for the U.S. Information Service posted in Algeria and Iran, and an educator in the Foreign Language Department at Pace Academy. She was a graduate of St. Anne’s-Belfield, Wellesley College, and Emory University. Her generous gift benefitted the unrestricted Fund for St. Anne’s-Belfield, signalling a tremendous vote of confidence in the leadership and direction of the school. Robertson’s generosity, much like her impact on the lives she touched in her lifetime, will be felt for generations to come.

Planned giving can allow donors to make a larger impact than they may have thought possible, often while providing meaningful financial or tax advantages for themselves and their families. It is a way to align personal financial planning with a cause that matters deeply.

Perhaps most importantly, as demonstrated by Robertson, a planned gift is a statement of belief: belief in the school’s mission, belief in the power of education, and belief in the generations yet to come. By including St. Anne’sBelfield in your estate plans, you weave your story into the fabric of the school’s future β€” ensuring that your legacy of generosity and vision continues for decades to come.

To learn more about how you can support St. Anne’s through planned giving opportunities, please contact Pam Winthrop or Josh McCoy in the Advancement Office at 434-2965106.

Planned Giving

Many alumni and parents choose to include St. Anne’sBelfield in their estate plans as a way of carrying their values forward. Planned gifts are a lasting legacy of love and commitment to our school’s mission.

Corporate Support

Businesses play a powerful role in our community. Corporate sponsorships and matching gifts help strengthen programs while highlighting a company’s commitment to education. Parents and alumni often open the door for these opportunities through their workplaces.

Gifts of Securities

Donating appreciated stocks or other securities can be a tax-savvy way to support the school while making a real difference for students right now.

Matching Gifts

You may be able to multiply your impact! Many employers match charitable contributions. Reach out to our team to potentially double or even triple your generosity.

In-Kind Gifts

Donated goods, services, or other non-monetary support, known as in-kind gifts, also help enrich the life of our school community. Many people choose this option to support our annual Maroon & White celebration.

MAROON & WHITE

As the culmination of the year-long Semicentennial Celebration, on April 5, the Conway Convocation Center (CCC) was transformed into the Las Vegas strip for Maroon & White Casino Night. Guests enjoyed casino games, exclusive prizes, and live music. All the fun had a serious purpose as we raised a net of $124,477 for the Fund for St. Anne’s-Belfield and towards the first phase of the renovation of the Kindergarten – Grade 4 playground.

The Peter V. R. Weeks Award is named in memory of a senior master, Peter Weeks, who served as assistant headmaster, athletic director, coach, teacher, mentor, role model, and counselor for students and teachers alike between 1961–1981. The award recognizes the highest level of giving participation from the classes of the 1970s and 1980s. The winner of the Peter V.R. Weeks Award is the Class of 1984.

The Randolph Murray Bowl honors a dedicated alumna, Bruce Randolph Murray ’65, who with her family, gave generously of her time, talent, and treasures for decades.
