Academics
Junior Kindergarten & Kindergarten Program The Jr. Kindergarten program focuses on introducing our youngest students to the routine of a structured program while nurturing their social/emotional development. It’s a year to make friends, learn their environment and get exposure to academic concepts like letter sounds, writing, telling stories, and exploring with hands-on arts and crafts. It’s a space for children to discover their love for learning and grow in faith. Students in Kindergarten will receive an academically challenging curriculum in a God-centered, loving environment filled with friendship, learning, and personal growth. The expectations are high, but we believe every child can be successful and grow. Students will experience working as a whole group and independently, rotating through independent and collaborative centers as they grow as readers and writers. There is an emphasis on effective communication skills and in building confidence to speak before an audience. Our Catholic faith and teachings frame all discussions and shape the way the students resolve conflict and care for their classmates. Love is at the center of all things in Kindergarten and the goal is to create an environment that makes the students excited about school and learning.
Intermediate & Middle School The intermediate grades (3-5) are an exciting time for students. Students use the foundational skills they’ve learned in the primary grades and start to discover what they can do independently. They continue their science education with our PlanetBravo partnership in 4th grade, and the 5th graders embark on hands on experiences like their trip to Catalina Island. Their day starts with their homeroom/religion teachers and transition throughout the day to their core academic subjects and electives. Our 1:1 technology program begins in 5th grade as students prepare for the middle school program. At the intermediate level a focus is placed on developing organizational and study skills, working independently and in groups, digital citizenship, and being good stewards of God’s creation. Their faith formation continues with weekly mass attendance and alter service opportunities. Middle School (6-8) is a critical transitional time for our students who are preparing for adolescence. At St. Anastasia a focus is placed on having students gain responsibility for their own success while remaining in a safe close-knit community that fosters self-confidence. Students in middle school are introduced to block scheduling and change classrooms for core subjects. They start the day with their Homeroom/Religion teachers and transition throughout the day to their core academic subjects and their electives. Core subject classes are half-sized to allow for lower student:teacher ratio. Students also have the opportunity to explore algebraic concepts on a standard or accelerated learning track based on readiness. Various electives are offered to our middle school students including, but not limited to: Spirituality, Acting, Study Hall, Sports Conditioning, Art, Writing, etc. Experiential learning opportunities are offered throughout the year with trips such as Astro Camp in 6th grade, Pali and leadership in the 7th and 8th grade, and a capstone trip to Washington DC in the 8th grade. These are only some of the ways that students are given the opportunity to bring their textbook lessons to life.
ATHLETICS St. Anastasia participates in athletics through CYO and FIYA leagues in Grades 3 thru 8. While our teams are competitive, the primary focus is on instruction and teamwork. We offer the following sports throughout the year at St. Anastasia:

SPECIALIZED PROGRAMS PS Science
PS Science is a program that launches elementary students onto the track of inquiry based science learning. It aims to build on young children’s natural curiosity about the world to develop a positive attitude toward science. At St. Anastasia students in grades K-4 receive weekly interactive STEM lessons through PS Science. Some examples of the lessons include building solar cars, designing new inventions through, “upcycling” examining and constructing different biomes, and dissecting various plants and animals.
Technology Program Students at St. Anastasia use various classroom technologies, from document cameras to smart boards and flat screen monitors. St. Anastasia is a participant of the C3 Ignite program that allows each of our students to have iPads loaded with educational apps geared towards math, reading and phonics. These devices are not only used as a classroom tool by students for their projects, research and homework, but can also be used in homes without internet access, as a mobile hotspot and/or a direct connected Sprint network device. In Grades 5-8 students participate in a chromebook program, using G-suite apps and other tools to support and enhance classroom daily instruction.
Writing Workshop St. Anastasia uses an initiative from the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project of Columbia University. This program brings engaging, individualized and innovative small-group instruction in reading and writing to our students. The program is built around the knowledge that young writers need explicit instructions in the practice of writing, including the conventions of style and mechanics of language. They need to be surrounded by a culture where writing is valued and appreciated. It encourages students to write about things they find meaningful and relevant. Students spend a significant amount of time practicing all the stages of the writing process, including brainstorming, drafting, revising and publishing their work.
Social Emotional Learning Program St. Anastasia uses RULER, an evidence-based approach to social and emotional learning (SEL) developed at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence. RULER supports the entire school community: Understanding the value of emotions, Building the skills of emotional intelligence, and Creating and maintaining a positive school climate. Students develop the RULER skills by utilizing four tools: classroom charters, mood meters, meta-moment, and blueprint. RULER is an acronym for the five skills of emotional intelligence: R ecognizing emotions in oneself and others U nderstanding the causes and consequences of emotions L abeling emotions with a nuanced vocabulary E xpressing emotions in accordance with cultural norms and social context R egulating emotions with helpful strategies
