Our guest speaker was former student Mr Peter Read. Peter served for over 30 years in the Australian Army including three tours of duty in Iraq, two peacekeeping missions in Bougainville, tours of duty in Malaysia and East Timor and a tour of duty in Afghanistan. His insights to the students in terms of leadership were exceptional. I would also like to thank Fr Gerard Keith for his role in the ceremony.
Invitations are extended to all parents to attend the opening of the Joseph Innovation Trade Training Centre on 22 November at 5pm. For catering purposes please RSVP via the College website http://www.sjc.vic.edu.au/upcoming-events

Year 8-10 exams
Year 7-10 students finish - end Term 4
Year 7 2014 Orientation Day College Office closes for Term break

From the Deputies
The end of year is fast approaching and spring seems to have arrived! End of Year exams are underway. Year 12 students are already in the middle of their exams and we wish them well during this period. Year 11 exams will be held from 15 - 22 November. Pathways exams will run from 2 - 5 December. Exam redemptions will be held for students deemed not to have made sufficient effort. Students and parents will be notified about these in due course.
We hope that students will not slacken off in their efforts to prepare for the end of year exams. It’s always disappointing to realise that your results reflect your effort rather than your ability. Please take the time to read the exam preparation advice in the Curriculum news section.

Getting ready for Work Experience
Work Experience takes place during Activities Week at the College. It is compulsory for all Year 10 students. Activities Week in 2014 is planned to take place from 5 – 9 May.
Year 9 students will be participating in a Work Experience Preparation Day on Wednesday 13 November. Letters have been sent home to parents alerting them to the work experience program.
It is acknowledged that finding work experience places can be difficult. And unfortunately, it is not possible to get work experience in all career areas. Here are some suggestions for how to get started:
My Son does know where he can do work experience…
• Do you know somebody that works in this industry that he could approach for work experience?
• If no, you can start a google/yellow pages search.
• The students’ Work Experience booklet has templates of commentary students can use when contacting employers, as well as a list of previous work experience placements.
My Son can’t get work experience in the career he is interested in…or he doesn’t know what he wants to do
• Is there a similar career option/work experience he could seek? ie. For those interested in medicine, a Vet practice might be interesting.
• Is there something else he would be happy to do for the week?
• Is there a member of the family or network who may be able to offer an interesting work experience?
• Has he completed the ‘Work Experience Help With the Choice’ task in the Work Experience book?
If a student is stuck and can’t find a place, and/or is very worried and stressed about work experience he should come and see Karen Shum, the Careers Coordinator at the Careers Office for help, as soon as possible. Likewise, parents are welcome to contact Karen on 5226 8143. Parents can also ask questions via the Careers Blog or email.
It is helpful to review the students’ Work Experience booklet. A copy of this booklet can be found on the Careers Blog at: http://blogs.sjcgeelong.catholic.edu.au/ careers/2013/10/18/2727/
When students have found a work experience place, they need to obtain information from the employer. The required information needed is filled in on a yellow form called the Work Experience Return Slip. This form will be given to students on the Work Experience Preparation Day. This information is then returned to the Careers Room to enable the required information to be filled into the Work Experience Form 328. The process for completion of activities is provided in the Work Experience book. The Careers Office transfers the information supplied onto the Form 382 which is the official work experience form.
The Form 382 will be returned to students, both in hard copy and via email. Students must then organise to take it to the employer for signature. Students must sign the form 382, as well as parent/guardians. The original form is then returned to school. Mr Tobias, the Principal, signs the form last. The Careers Office obtains the Principal’s signature. Once all signatures are on the form, it is copied. Students receive a copy, as to does the employer. The school keeps the original.
Students will not be permitted to do work experience unless they have returned the work experience form, with all signatures, to the school prior to the commencement of the placement.
If students intend to take work experience in the construction industry, they must have a CI Card (Construction Induction Training). Students must inform the careers office that they will need to undertake CI Card Training. They do this by circling Yes on their Year 10 Work Experience Return Slip. CI Card training will be provided to students at school in early 2014.
Karen Shum - Careers Coordinator

Curriculum News
Exams are looming for all students in Years 8 to 11. Many students in Year 11 have already undertaken a Year 12 subject and have completed or will be completing that exam soon. This can be a busy time and students should work together with their teachers and parents to ensure they are well prepared.
The exams are designed to assess a student’s understanding of the semester’s work. In classes students will be given help with revision and guidelines from their teachers. At home, it is important that students have a quiet space in their home for study. Commitments in the week prior to the exam and during the exam period should be minimised. If students are feeling anxious about exams they should discuss their concerns with their subject teacher or homeroom teacher. Conversely if students are not studying or prioritising their exams, parents are encouraged to email their teachers so that the teacher is able to help set priorities and schedule study time.
Students should plan their study time and make the most of study periods. Year 11 exams commence on Friday15 November and conclude on Friday 22 November. This will be followed by four days of Year 12 classes from Monday 25 November to Thursday 28 November. Year 8-10 exams start in the following week on Monday 2 December to Thursday 5 December. Students in Year 8-10 are required to attend school for the whole day. Students in Year 11 are only required to attend for examinations. Supervised study exists for those students who are at school at other times.
Good luck to all our students as they prepare for the end of year.
YEAR 12 ORIENTATION CLASSES FOR CURRENT YEAR 11S
2014 Year 12 Orientation classes will commence at the conclusion of the Year 11 exams. It is compulsory for current Year 11 students to attend these classes as they mark the official commencement of their Year 12 classes. These classes will not be repeated at the beginning of next year so nonattendance would mean that a student will already be behind when he returns next February. Some subjects will also be making a start on important SAC tasks.

to St Vinnies
Charlie Bowman from St Vinnies came out to the junior school assembly on Monday 28 October to accept a cheque for $2724. This cheque was presented by Jake McCorkell of Year 7 on behalf of the 38 Year 7 & 8 boys who participated in the SJC Sleep Out on Thursday 12 September. Charlie explained to the boys that this money would go into the education assistance program which helps support families of children that require assistance with education expenses such as books and uniform. Thank you to all the boys and those people within our community who donated money towards this appeal. A big thank you also goes to the entire St Joseph’s community for their donations of clothing and blankets that were collected on Friday 13 September. Between collection and 4 October the donations helped over 400 adults and children with their requests for clothing. Your participation in this event displayed an outstanding contribution to St Vinnies assisting them in their efforts to help those less fortunate in our local community.

Presentation
2013 eSmart Parent Survey Report for St Joseph’s College Geelong

Date: October 2013 Responses: 565 parents
DEFINITIONS:
ICT (Information and Communications Technology) – the use of computers and related technologies eSmart – issues surrounding the smart, safe, responsible use of computers in school.
The eSmart Schools curriculum has a strong focus on the right of everyone to be safe and respected, and explicitly teaches about this right and associated responsibilities. The school also teaches explicitly about bullying and its dynamics, including cyberbullying. Students are regularly involved in developing and delivering information on the smart, safe and responsible use of technologies to a variety of audiences and are taught a suite of social and emotional skills. The critical and resourceful use of technology for learning is embedded in the curriculum.
1. PAYMENT FOR LAPTOP REPAIRS
The majority of parents showed a preference to move to a system that reduced the excess for repairs through the payment of a premium.
Parent preferences for payment of accidental damage to laptops
Retain the current system
- pay no premium and pay up to $250 excess for any repair of accidental damage
Pay an extra $30 per year with an excess of $30 for repairs of accidental damage
Pay an extra $40 per year with no excess for repairs of accidental damage

Implications:
• The school will investigate ways to reduce the excess for repairs through the payment of a premium.
2. POLICY DEVELOPMENT
Policy Development

Implications

• We shall consider installing Skype as part of the image with parents being able to request its removal.
• More copyright education will be delivered to students through the eSmart curriculum.
• Although a high percentage of parents believed it was reasonable for students to be allowed to install programs on the laptops, installations will only occur through the ICT Department and the school will require students to provide evidence of licencing. Teacher approval for the program as a requirement for their course will also be needed. From 2014 students will not have admin permissions to the laptops.
• Games will be banned from being installed or saved on laptops or from being accessed at school. Educational games used at school will be only accessed in class under teacher supervision.
• The school internet filter was trialled this year and will be available to parents from the start of 2014.
• We shall continue to provide internet filtering at school.
3. ISSUES REGARDING THE SMART, SAFE RESPONSIBLE USE OF COMPUTERS
Parents were asked to respond to the following issues regarding discussions with their children and their preferred age for a focus on teaching about these issues:
• Cybersafety - keeping safe online
• Cyberbullying issues
• Sexting issues - nude photos sent over the phone
• Privacy - being careful about posting personal information online
• E-security - guarding against identity theft
• Guarding against viruses and other malware
• Copyright responsibilities
• Backup of data
• Online communication etiquette
68% - 85% of parents responded that the home discussion and the teaching of the issues should occur across all Year Levels.
Year 7 and Year 8 were seen as the most important years for all issues apart from Sexting which was seen as being discussed more appropriately at Year 9.
Years 10, 11 and 12 will focus more deeply on Cybercitizenship issues such as illegal downloading, online behaviour, pornography and the implications of raunch culture in the media.
Implications
• From 2014 a formal eSmart Curriculum will be taught across all Year Levels with greater emphasis on education at Years 7 – 9.
• Education on sexting will form part of the Year 9 Well Being course focussing on broader aspects of sexual assault on women.
4. CYBERSAFETY EXPERIENCES BY STUDENTS
524 parents responded to this question.
• 80% of parents reported no cybersafety issues.

• 20% of parents reported one or more cybersafety issues
o 6% Being bullied on social networks like Facebook
o 3% Being bullied in an online chat
o 3% Being bullied in text messages on a mobile phone
o 3% Sexting – nude photos sent over the phone
o 2% Grooming from online strangers
o 4% Unauthorised use of their personal information
Implications
• Although individual cases of negative experiences might appear low, the school is concerned that the level of reporting these cases to the staff at the school is even lower.
• The school performs annual surveys of all students to gather information related to all forms of bullying.
• The school has followed through on all cases that have been brought to our attention and we encourage all students and parents to seek assistance in such matters.
• From 2014 a formal eSmart Curriculum will be taught across all Year Levels with greater emphasis on students reporting such incidents.
5. LOCATION OF USEFUL ICT RESOURCES FOR PARENTS
Useful ICT Resources for Parents
Discussions

Other responses from parents indicated that many were able to call upon their own experience and training. A few also noted the usefulness of presentations and programs from other schools their children attended.
Implications
• We shall continue to provide SJC Newsletter articles and presentations to parents on these issues.
• We shall investigate the provision of education evenings for parents to assist them in gaining more skills with computing and more confidence in dealing with these issues.
6. GENERAL CONCERNS REGARDING THE USE OF COMPUTERS
Have your sons displayed any of the following?
Neglecting family and friends in favour of using the computer
Anger/aggression when refused permission to use the computer
Inability/refusal to stop using social networks like facebook
Inability/refusal to stop playing games

Additional comments by parents provided useful feedback on many aspects of the use of laptops by the students, policies implemented by the school and general issues surrounding ICT.
The majority of these comments focussed on the need for a well-developed eSmart Curriculum to help educate the boys in smarter, safer and more responsible uses of computers. While most comments showed satisfaction with the progress at SJC, there was a clear concern about the boys’ personal use of the laptops for games, social networking and movie watching instead of the use of them for school work. The main criticism focussed on the problems associated with the boys playing games both in class and at home. Five comments were critical of the laptops functionality.
Implications
• From 2014 a formal eSmart Curriculum will be taught across all Year Levels to improve the smart, safe, responsible use of ICT.
• Almost all functionality problems have been associated with programs installed by students which have changed configurations or have installed viruses or malware that have rendered the laptops inoperable. The programs on the laptops will be more closely managed by the school. Student laptops will have admin rights removed to prevent installation of programs that are not required by the school.
• A Home Internet Filter will be installed on all student laptops. Parents will have the option to request this be activated by the school. There will be no cost for this service.
• We are currently trialling software to allow teachers to monitor student laptop activity in the school. This software will not work outside the school network.

Years 7 & 8 “Cut the Wrap” day 31 October
This was the first “Cut the Wrap” day where students were simply displaying better sustainable practice, as there was no reward or food incentive offered. Despite overall numbers of participants being lower, 7E rose to the challenge, demonstrating 100% participation on the day. Unknowingly, they will be awarded a free pizza lunch for their effort.
I am keen to obtain parent/guardian feedback on our “Cut the Wrap” events, to ascertain whether level of support is simply incentive driven, or related to the level of advertising. If you would like to provide feedback regarding a sufficient level of advertising for you (i.e. newsletter notification/ text message), that would be appreciated. Please forward your ideas to; kellyj@sjc.vic.edu.au
Kelly Jenkins - Sustainability Coordinator
Toucan Appeal

On 8 November the school will have a casual clothes day to raise awareness and gather food for the 2013 Geelong Food Bank Toucan Appeal.
How would you like to go to school on an empty stomach? If a person has not eaten for a certain period of time it can affect their brain function reducing their learning capabilities. How would it feel after having not eaten for 2-3 days and slowly starving in a first world country whilst most of the people around you have more food than they need? 23% of families in Geelong had to live off an income of $500 or less a week. This is a reality. Poverty isn’t just in third world countries. There are still many people struggling to survive in our own community.
The Geelong Food Bank Toucan Appeal is trying to pool as much food as possible for disadvantaged people within the Geelong community. To help you can bring in cans of food and boxes of cereal as a donation. PLEASE BRING AS MUCH AS YOU… CAN!!! (<–Get it!?!?) Our aim is to put the cans in a line that is long enough to get around Zampatti Oval and make a very large pyramid with the cereal boxes. All of this food will then go to the Geelong Food Relief Centre and the Second Bite Foundation.
Jacob Talbot, Michael Bongiorno & Joe McGivern 8J

The group of students travelling to Uganda late in November are looking for donations of small teddies or soft toys to give to newborn babies at the medical centre in Mannya. The teddies do not have to be new but they need to be clean, in excellent condition and be suitable for newborns. As the boys will be packing the teddies in luggage to take, we are only asking for small sized toys (under 20cm high) to make packing them more practical. Please send any donations to the College office. Carmen Ahearn

Heritage Highlights
Recently I have been hunting for photographs of the Joey’s Cricket Clubrooms during the 60s, and while I did not find any photographs of the clubrooms, I found many photographs of the College buildings and grounds, spread through various boxes and folders. These photographs are tangible evidence of the growth and development of the buildings and grounds from the time St. Augustine’s Boy’s Home occupied the site to 2004. These photographs’ form an important part of records of the College History. I will share them with you in this and future Heritage Highlights. I hope one day to have all photographs of the College buildings and grounds gathered into a comprehensive collection.
The 50th Anniversary of the St Joseph’s Cricket Club will be held in December, and Dom DeGrandi, is looking for good quality photographs of the Cricket Clubrooms, during the 1960s, 1963-64 in particular. Please contact me if you can help.
I hope you find these photographs as interesting as I do. You can contact me by Email susanb@sjc.vic.edu.au
