CELEBRATING OUR HSC ACHIEVEMENTS 2021
“The College is proud of the HSC academic achievements made by the HSC Class of 2021 but, more importantly, it is proud of the resilient, compassionate and agile young men that they have become.”
33
FROM THE COLLEGE PRINCIPAL I congratulate the young men in our HSC Class of 2021 for their dedication and desire for success, our dedicated staff for their ability to engage, guide and motivate our students, and our very supportive parents and carers for their wonderful support of their son and our College. Through the challenging times of the last two years when the Class of 2021 had to deal with so much disruption and adversity, the glue that helped them through was their family, friends, and College community. I acknowledge not just the students who attained results to be recognised in this publication, but each member of the Class of 2021 for their resilience and determination to gain the Higher School Certificate in quite unprecedented circumstances. Many students exceeded expectations to achieve personal best performances in one or more subjects and they too can be justly satisfied with their efforts.
Congratulations to Christoper Seton as the College Dux and the twelve students who attained an ATAR over 90. To Riley Anderson for achieving the Premier’s Award for All-Round Excellence, to the thirty students who received one or more Distinguished Achievers awards, to Leo Malaesilia for your Encore nomination and to Sam Corkhill for your selection in Art Express, congratulations. When one considers all aspects of these HSC results it is apparent that there is much to celebrate about the academic successes of the Class of 2021. Almost 40% of all results achieved were in the top two Bands and more than 70% of results were Bands 4, 5 or 6. In addition, a wide breadth of courses across the humanities, sciences, mathematics, technology, and the arts achieved course averages considerably above the State Mean.

The St Gregory’s ‘family’ is very proud of our graduates from the Class of 2021 and the fine young men they have become. We wish them all the very best in their future endeavours and trust they will continue to be fine men of strong minds and gentle hearts.
The young men who have achieved excellent HSC results in 2021 have been the students who have also grasped the many opportunities on offer at the College, and who have involved themselves in leadership, co-curricular activities, and social justice endeavours. Our focus at St Gregory’s encompasses preparation for life in all of its complexity so that student wellbeing complements academic success. At St Gregory’s we immerse our students in a diverse and expansive academic and co-curricular program that fosters their spiritual growth, a growth mindset, builds resilience and grounds students with a strong sense of self. Our unique opportunities empower students to define what success is to them, in preparation for an everevolving future.

CELEBRATING OUR HSC ACHIEVEMENTS 2021
SUCCESS THROUGH RESILIENCE AND AGILITY Our HSC 2021 cohort is the embodiment of the Agile St Greg’s Graduate. In adversity, these gentlemen have demonstrated resilience, they have overcome isolation by forming strong relationships, they have been responsible, resourceful and reflective. It is true that our boys’ achievements were among the best in the region. It is also true that Year 12, 2021 excelled in a wide range of academic pursuits. Their results demonstrate the continuing relevance of boys’ education. However, the real achievement of this group has been its determination, its ability to work together and to not only survive but flourish in adverse conditions. The many achievements we highlight here can only hint at the
tremendous effort, growth and character of our boys and the fine young men they have become. The HSC class of 2021 has excelled in academic, sporting, social justice and co-curricular dimensions of school life. They have exhibited exceptional leadership, supported one another, served the community, worked hard and shown the family spirit that embody St Gregory’s College and Marist education. The College is proud of all the academic achievements of the HSC 2021 cohort, but more importantly, we are proud of the compassionate and agile men they are. We wish them all the best as they make important contributions to our world.

SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENTS RILEY ANDERSON Riley was awarded the NSW Premier’s All Round Achievement Award. Students are presented with this award if they achieve a Band 6 (over 90) in at least 10 units. In achieving this rare distinction, Riley demonstrated both resilience and tenacity in his studies. He was often the last student to leave Homework Help Club on Monday afternoons, he submitted a prodigious number of practice essays to his teachers, and he spent time with his teachers after each assessment discussing how he could improve. In addition to the 2-unit courses listed below, Riley also undertook studies in both English Extension 1 and History Extension to develop his skills. Riley is to be commended on the extensive knowledge and sophisticated skills he demonstrated in:

SAM CORKHILL This year the College was privileged to have Sam Corkhill nominated for Art Express. This prestigious award celebrates the best Visual Arts artworks in the State. Sam’s entry entitled “It doesn’t matter how much milk you add, it’s still tea” featured eight colour photographic representations of Aboriginal male portraits with a centre artwork of three of the males holding cups of tea of different shades. The composition was a subtle but intense statement of Aboriginal heritage and the effects of European colonisation. As part of Art Express, Sam’s artwork is being exhibited around country New South Wales and will also be exhibited in Sydney.
LEO MALAESILIA Leo Malaesilia was nominated for ENCORE which is a program of outstanding performances and compositions by students from the HSC Music course. Leo’s nominated work was a piano solo entitled “Here Comes the Sun,” which was a cover version of his adaption of the Beatles classic. He was commended on his artistic sensitivity of his composition and on the lively dexterity of the performance.

FRIENDSHIP, FAMILY, FAITH The College Celebrates with Christopher Seton as he is announced College Dux for 2021. For Christopher Seton, College Dux with an ATAR of 97.90 and recipient of the Academic Achievement Scholarship at the University of NSW, the most important achievement of his HSC cohort was “the hard work, sacrifice and commitment” that the group demonstrated despite “two years of interruptions and uncertainty”. He acknowledged that “to make it through the HSC in those conditions can be counted as achievement in itself”. It was in the fire of these challenging conditions that the resilience of the 2021 HSC Cohort was forged. This group was graced with 12 students who achieved an ATAR of above 90, 30 students who achieved 53 Band 6 results, 38% of student results in the Band 5 – 6 range and 72% in the Band 4 – 6 range. Despite the extensive periods of lockdown, 61 VET TAFE credentials were also achieved.
FRIENDSHIP The picture that Christopher painted at the beginning of his valedictory College Dux speech was one of reassurance and comfort as he and his classmates faced “heartbreaking, soul crunching, almost impossible exams” and were able “laugh together after it was over”. His overarching realisation was that “the relationships I had formed in my senior years with my classmates were instrumental to my ultimate achievements during the HSC journey”. Christopher observed that “the most valuable contribution to my HSC experience was the relationship I built with my fellow classmates”. His sense of belonging to the group gave him the resilience to thrive despite hardship. In Chris’ words, “with each assignment… my classmates would push each other to be better. The competition was subtle and friendly, helping us to achieve marks that made our teachers proud”. Through the challenges of the classroom and co-curricular activities a strong sense of comradery was established that provided a balance to the pressure and uncertainties of the HSC year. As Chris explained, “co-curricular and sporting opportunities brought students together in unlikely yet rewarding relationships contributing to the overall spirit and heart of the College”.
FAMILY Christopher also credits his success and the success of his year group to the “respectful alliances built with teachers”. In an acknowledgement of the Family Spirit that is central to the Marist charism, Chris recognised that “the dedication and sacrifice I have seen from our teachers to help us not only improve an understanding of a subject but also to become respectful young men is astonishing”. He suggested to future HSC year groups gathered at the HSC High Achievers’ Assembly and those watching the livestream that these alliances with teachers were “a crucial element of an enjoyable and successful schooling experience, particularly in the senior years”. Chris thanked his teachers for “selflessly offering the greatest amount of assistance possible”. He lauded the time spent by teachers outside school time, the passion
88
they showed for their subject areas, the hours of marking practice responses, the sage advice, the relationships formed and the family spirit of tight-knit classes. He expressed that “My Year 12 teachers deserve praise and recognition as I could not have achieved my results without them”. Chris attested to “the support of my family which has been unrelenting and their patience which has been unwavering”. For Chris, his sisters and their “invaluable guidance” was instrumental in his achievement as was the steadfast support of his parents.
FAITH For Christopher, his quiet faith was a guiding light in his HSC journey. Through the years, many students and staff have witnessed the quiet ways in which Christopher put his faith into practice in his work with Year 7, in his social justice endeavours, and in his participation in liturgical celebration; “my faith was integral to my HSC journey as I strived to emulate Jesus in creating positive and constructive friendships. For Christ is worthy of my best effort.”
FUTURE… The final message Christopher delivered in his College Dux address was to the “gentlemen of the College”. He offered a vision of future St Gregory’s students who would continue to “form fellowships, alliances and mateships and make that choice to actively build bonds and connections”. Chris concluded that “relationships take time to develop but can go a long way in helping you through your life”. He left students of the future with the advice that “if you can recognise that the HSC (and life) is very much a team game, then you are setting yourself up for success. This is a victory I have not achieved alone. It is a victory I will share with teachers and my fellow classmates, the St Gregory’s graduating class of 2021”.

Students across the Mathematics courses performed effectively in 2021. Even in Mathematics Extension 2, one of the most challenging HSC courses, 75% of students achieved and E3 or E4 – an outstanding effort. Of special note is Declan Byrum’s achievement. Declan is a Year 11 student completing accelerated Mathematics and his achievement of a high Band 6 is an outstanding result. This group of Mathematics students were challenged and pushed all the way from Year 7. A key factor to their success was the expectations of every student. From the beginning, they were encouraged to understand and visualise rather than simply “do the Math”. This developed their critical thinking and enthusiasm for asking “why?” They understood the importance of “putting in the hard yards” and attended Mathematics Study on a regular basis. The students in the Extension and Advanced groups worked as a team and their willingness to collaborate and share resources was outstanding.

The beauty of a course like Studies of Religion is the increasing sophistication of discussion sparked by the complex considerations of different faiths. In Studies of Religion, boys were encouraged to support their understanding of the dimensions of different faiths with detailed explanation of supporting evidence. In Studies of Religion, students worked together and under the able tutelage of their teachers to shape their awareness and respect for a range of religious perspectives.

At the heart of success in Science courses was the team environment that existed in the classroom. The gentleman worked well supporting, sharing and helping each other with their work. This created a healthy competition in the classes. There was a real passion for experimental process and content. Strategies commonly used across the HSC Science courses in 2021: • Regular completion of past HSC questions throughout the year, as the content is taught • Modelling exam technique – using key verbs sheet regularly in the classroom • Peer marking of exam style questions • Physics - Additional classes after school, holidays • Student accountability – regularly checking student work • Providing regular Feedback -annotating student responses

English is the only compulsory subject area in the HSC and students are to be commended on their achievement and their improvement in English through the course of the HSC. Noteworthy, is the increased number of students obtaining Band 5 in English Standard. 12 students obtained a Band 5 in English Standard and this is an outstanding result. English Extension courses are among the most challenging in the HSC and 100% of students attempting these courses achieved an E3. In the English Studies Exam the College was also 7.1% above state average – a significant achievement and these students are to be commended.

Agriculture was one of the strongest performing courses in the 2021 HSC with students achieving 11.4% above state average and 70% of students in the Band 5 – 6 range. The Agriculture class had been together since Year 9 and was characterised by their hard work. While they had fun during practical lessons, they worked hard every lesson and attended night study sessions before the HSC. These students worked together outside the classroom in the many Agriculture co-curricular activities. There was an amazing class culture that developed in this group. Although the class was competitive, students also helped each other and there was a great “vibe” in the group. The class had high expectations of itself but also had fun, ate a lot of food and supported each other. Course Agriculture

In HSIE, Legal Studies and Ancient History continued their strong HSC results, both achieving results more than 6% above state average. Students in HSIE were strongly represented in students achieving Band 5 and 6 results. HSIE continues to offer the broadest range of HSC courses. There were several factors that “made the difference” in HSIE subjects. The collegial study approach was essential. Students created collaborative study notes and formed study groups both during Homework Help Club and outside of school to prepare for exams. Students shared social media posts that were subject focused as part of building their subject awareness.

Past paper HSC questions were undertaken and submitted to classroom teachers for feedback – also made the difference in HSIE subjects. Given the difficult year that this cohort faced, it must be acknowledged that the determination and resolve all students demonstrated contributed to these results. Subject resources and teacher passion for the subject area helped to drive student engagement and determination to do their best.

Finally, HSIE were fortunate to have attracted students who were suited to these subjects. The ‘right course for the right student’ concept seems to have played a role with these results.

FOCUS: VOCATIONAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING COURSES Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses are an important part of the curriculum offerings at the College. They help many of our students prepare for further education, training, employment and lifelong learning. Some students study VET courses at the College and some attend TAFE or other training providers.

The Vocational Education Frameworks offered at the College in 2021 included: • Certificate II in Construction Pathways • Certificate II in Agriculture (Primary Industries) • Certificate III in Retail Services • Certificate of Attainment for Fitness This year, despite remote learning hampering students’ work placements and completion of competencies, the College registered 61 TAFE Certificates. The College also had students complete School Based Apprenticeships. These are excellent results for these students and for the school. In addition, many VET courses can also contribute to an ATAR if students complete the HSC examination component. Course
