The St Gregory's Agile Graduate

We aspire to send our young people out into a fast-changing world equipped to respond to the unexpected with agility. Through this model, we are asserting that the best way to foster that capability is through the cultivation of learner attributes or qualities, concurrent with high-quality teaching pedagogies.

At the heart of our model is Spiritually Centred. This recognises the significant role that spirituality; particularly our Marist spirituality; plays in supporting the development of the whole person. Surrounding this are the three other domains in which our young people must develop agility; the Intellectual, the Physical, and the Social-Emotional domains.

Through our model, we aim to recognise that everyone has the capacity to keep on learning, throughout their life. We know that the best learners understand what learning is: it is something they do in order to build knowledge and skill in any given area.

Through our Senior School Agile Graduate model, we identify five key qualities or attributes that good learners have - Good learners are Resilient, Relational, Reflective, Resourceful and Responsible.

We have already seen great collaboration between Leaders of Learning, Year Leaders, Academic Care Leaders, teachers, students and their parents, in developing and implementing this model. In Term One this year we focused on developing the ‘Being Responsible’ attribute. In classes, students interrogate what it is to be a responsible learner, and teachers provide opportunities for students to demonstrate responsibility and be recognised for their learning agility. In Term Two, commencing with the Parent-Teacher Interviews, we introduced the next attribute: ‘Being Reflective’. You can see in the posters below what the behaviours and strategies are that contribute to building these two R’s:

Agile Learners are RESPONSIBLE

They:

• Arrive at class ready to learn

• Have all equipment on hand

• Do some extra preparation for their lesson

• Show initiative in doing more than they must

• Regulate their own behaviour

• Participate actively

• Listen respectfully

• Ask clarifying questions

• Take turns talking

• Get into the ‘flow’ of learning (maintain focus)

• Keep trying, even when it’s difficult

Agile Learners are REFLECTIVE

They:

• Always look to improve in and out of school

• Pay attention to their thoughts and actions

• Accept and apply feedback for improvement

• Know effort is required to build more skills

• Continue fine-tuning how they do things

• Set SMART goals and adjust them as they go

• Make plans for improvement

• Use Learning Intentions and Success Criteria to guide their work

• Know their own strengths and weaknesses

• Ask questions for clarification
