Throughout the first semester of 2021, the College has managed to host a reasonably full calendar of events and activities. We have certainly been very busy and hopefully (COVID permitting) will continue to be heading into Semester 2.

Thank you to the staff, Old Boys and community members who have contributed to this first edition of Hearts & Minds, which is full of stories we think reflect the breadth of the opportunities at the College and our wonderful community spirit.

As Mr MacMaster states in his welcome; “We have chosen to name this publication, ‘Hearts & Minds’ because that name captures the very essence of our community at St Gregory’s College. Each day, staff, students and parents all work together to shape the talented young people in our care.” This publication was born out of a need to share our stories with not just the current College community, but the wider community; our former students, past parents and future parents. We say it often, St Gregory’s College is a family, so from our family to yours, we present the first issue of Hearts & Minds.

We look forward to sharing all that is St Greg’s again with you in our second edition of Hearts & Minds in November.

From the College Principal We have chosen to name this publication, ‘Hearts & Minds’ because that name captures the very essence of our community at St Gregory’s College.

W

elcome to this first edition of the new St Gregory’s College publication, ‘Hearts & Minds.’ Each semester, the College will publish an edition which will aim to capture many of the events that have taken place throughout the past six months. Each edition will also capture the generous spirit and the warmth of the College community that exists at St Gregory’s.

We have chosen to name this publication, ‘Hearts & Minds’ because that name captures the very essence of our community at St Gregory’s College. Each day, staff, students and parents all work together to shape the talented young people in our care. Our work is collaborative and when our students open their hearts and minds to all the possibilities and opportunities that exist at St Gregory’s, then magic happens, and our students take part in a wonderful journey to becoming agile graduates of the College.

Over the past six months, the College has continued to ‘blossom’ in so many ways. Our Junior School is at capacity in terms of enrolments and the rollout of the Primary Years Program learning framework (as part of the International Baccalaureate) continues to grow in stature. The Senior School certainly has a spring in its step this year following the outstanding Higher School Certificate results from the 2020 cohort.

Learning and teaching are very much at the heart of what we do at St Gregory’s. We are fortunate to have a teaching staff who are committed and dedicated, ensuring our students receive the very best “all round’ education possible.

My hope is that each edition provides insights into the dynamic life of the College at St Gregory’s.

At the heart of the education we offer at St Gregory’s is our determination to pass on to the students we educate,

the dreams and desires of the founder of the Marist Brothers, St Marcellin Champagnat. St Marcellin’s early life provides a wonderful foundation for us to influence our students.

Two people deeply influenced Marcellin’s early religious education: his mother and his aunt, who was a nun. His mother, Marie Thérèse, was a woman of strong personality and religious spirit, both of which she passed on to Marcellin.

His father’s sister Louise, a Sister of St Joseph, was given shelter in their home during the French Revolution and had a deep influence on Marcellin’s religious development.

Because of these strong influences, a deeply traditional spirituality began to take form in Marcellin. His large and very close-knit family led to his developing one of the most attractive personality traits that has come down to us today - his family spirit: an identifying Marist characteristic. His mother’s strong maternal presence led to his view of Mary, the mother of Jesus, as the Good Mother, always near, and full of love and caring.

As members of our Marist family at St Gregory’s, we pray that St Marcellin walks with us each day, showing us the value of hard work, determination and a strong mind. We ask our Good Mother Mary to care and comfort us, giving us her example of a gentle heart at all times.

Success Through Resilience and Agility The College is proud of the HSC academic achievements made by the HSC Class of 2020 but, more importantly, it is proud of the resilient, compassionate and agile young men that they have become.

T

he HSC Class of 2020 epitomised the spirit of resilience in their attitude to their studies. This cohort worked together through the adversities of bushfires, online learning and cancelled co-curricular and sporting fixtures to achieve HSC results that were among the best in the region and among the best that the College has ever achieved.

Earn The Right Congratulations to the 2020 College Dux, David De Vecchis, for achieving an ATAR of 99.85 and leading the 2020 cohort to one of St Gregory’s most successful years ever.

In his signature-style valedictory speech, College Captain and State All-Rounder, David De Vecchis, explained how his HSC 2020 cohort had earned the right to be one of the most successful graduating groups to have graced the grounds of St Gregory’s College.

David’s 2020 HSC cohort had no less than 18 students with an ATAR above 90. There were 84 Band 6 results and two other students – Jackson Skinner and Sanjiv Weerasingham – achieved the coveted status of the State All-Round Excellence Award. David himself was placed 3rd in Geography and is now embarking on Bachelor of Construction Project Management degree at UTS with the Vice-Chancellor’s Outstanding Achievement Scholarship.

So, how did David and the other 123 members of the 2020 team earn the right to perform so well in the HSC?

Relationships At the heart of this group’s success was the family spirit and positive relationships for which St Gregory’s College has become renowned. In his Dux speech, David revealed how “we constantly checked in on our mates. We were able to laugh easily. We were respectful to staff and our families. We appreciated all of their support and were extremely grateful for all of their never-ending belief to achieve our goals.” These words were borne out countless times in 2020 as students bantered with each other during the online Zoom meetings in lockdown, as they prepared to go into their HSC exams, and as they farewelled the school on their graduation day. David identified the respect and the belief that is a hallmark of the working relationships between teachers and students at St Gregory’s College. He also spoke of the importance of the boys’ families as a source of inspiration and consolation during the grueling process of the HSC. In speaking about their results, David indicated that “as much as we would like to believe that the HSC is purely an individual effort, it is also a team effort. Every student, every subject, every mark matters.” He spoke of a collective ownership of the cohort’s achievements in suggesting that “all the recent successes are a credit to all of us, as we have earnt it.”

Responsibility Another key component of their success was this group’s ability to take responsibility for their learning and their future. David suggested that “To earn the right… is about how you take accountability for your actions. It is how you take ownership of your mistakes. It is how you apply yourself, to whatever your goal is and how you complete all the necessary steps required.”

He indicated that part of taking responsibility for learning involves working out your goals and articulating them clearly. He suggested that “if you want to earn the right, you need to ask yourself what do you want; what do you really want.” He went on to indicate that “it doesn’t have to be HSC-related; it could be scoring a try, it could be making the debating team, it could be getting that apprenticeship. Whatever it is, once you decide what you want, write it down. Writing down your goals helps you on that journey to earn the right.”

For David and his 2020 Cohort, responsibility also involved realizing that “there is no substitute for time and effort…The key to any goal is to simply acknowledge what is required, face it and take one step at a time, day by day. In this way, I was able to steadily develop skills which will continue to benefit me in the future.”

Resilience David also spoke of the resilience needed to achieve in the HSC. He suggested that “earning the

right… is a will to make sacrifices. It is a will to work hard and persevere through the difficult times in order to reap the rewards.”

In his Dux speech, David also indicated that resilience involves the honesty to acknowledge your limitations. “If you want to earn the right, you must be honest with yourself… The reality is, there are things we simply do not know, there are things we simply cannot do and there are obstacles which can stop us.”

With all the ambitions of the HSC year ahead of them, David spoke of how COVID-19 hit his cohort “like a ton of bricks… I found myself asking questions”.

We aspire to send our young people out into a fast-changing world equipped to respond to the unexpected with agility. Through this model, we are asserting that the best way to foster that capability is through the cultivation of learner attributes or qualities, concurrent with high-quality teaching pedagogies.

A

t the heart of our model is Spiritually Centred. This recognises the significant role that spirituality; particularly our Marist spirituality; plays in supporting the development of the whole person. Surrounding this are the three other domains in which our young people must develop agility; the Intellectual, the Physical, and the Social-Emotional domains.

Through our model, we aim to recognise that everyone has the capacity to keep on learning, throughout their life. We know that the best learners understand what learning is: it is something they do in order to build knowledge and skill in any given area.

Good learners, quite simply, know how to learn.

Through our Senior School Agile Graduate model, we identify five key qualities or attributes that good learners have.

We have already seen great collaboration between Leaders of Learning, Year Leaders, Academic Care Leaders, teachers, students and their parents, in developing and implementing this model. In Term One this year we focused on developing the ‘Being Responsible’ attribute.

In classes students interrogate what it is to be a responsible learner, and teachers provide opportunities for students to demonstrate responsibility and be recognised for their learning agility. In Term Two, commencing with the ParentTeacher Interviews, we introduced the next

attribute: ‘Being Reflective’. You can see in the posters below what the behaviours and strategies are that contribute to building these two R’s:

College Liturgical Life Mrs Cathie Clarke - Director of Mission

Spirituality is at the centre of the model of the St Gregory’s Agile Graduate, with reflective being one of the key attributes.

I

n 2021 as we explore the theme of Breathe the Spirit of Life, the prayer life of St Gregory’s contributes much to this area of development for our young people. Some examples of these in the first Semester are as follows:.

Ash Wednesday Liturgy 2021 The theme of Breathe the Spirit of Life invites us to look at who we are, the lives we are living, and our place in the world. It has implications for each of us as we explore our personal calling and the choices we make on our human journey.

Every class in the school participated in an Ash Wednesday Liturgy led by a student of Year 12. The symbols of the candle, cross and ashes helped us to focus on our prayer, that with all Christians we may be faithful to the call of God and open to the call of the Spirit Merciful God.

Mums and Sons Liturgies It is always good to honour our mothers and all the important women in our lives and at St Gregory’s we take the opportunity to do this with our Junior School Mums and our Year 7 Mums. This year we also prayed a liturgy with our Year 8 Mums since they had missed out last year.

Throughout the liturgies, we celebrated our Mums as models of God’s unconditional love. We prayed in gratitude for our Mums who respond to God’s call in a positive way like Mary did. Both Year 7 and Year 8 had some special words for their Mums.

Year 7: Advice for Mums Let me know when I make you proud.

Help me to have pride in my own accomplishments.

Let me earn your trust.

Then trust me.

I won’t let you down.

Let me try my wings. If I fail, let me know it’s OK. And encourage me to try again.

Let me know you love me. With a hug. Or a pat on the back, or when I need it, with a firm but gentle “no.”

Let me be. Let me change Let me grow.

Let me tell you when I’m feeling bad... or angry…

Even at you. And let me know even on my worst days, you still like me.

Let me dream. Share my joy when my dreams come true. Share my tears when they don’t.

Let me feel secure in my home. Help me realize that love is always there … that I can depend on you no matter what.

Let me run … let me laugh … let me play.

And most of all, let me be your child!

Year 8: I had the Meanest Mother in the World I have the meanest Mother in the World and I’d like to tell you about her.

While other kids eat cocopops for breakfast, or are allowed to skip breakfast altogether, I have to have weetbix, eggs or toast. When others buy whatever they want for lunch, I have to eat a sandwich. As you can guess, my dinner is different too. It’s a bit embarrassing but if there’s not sports training or school event, my Mum makes us sit at the table and eat together.

Sport training, you heard right. At least, I’m not alone in my sufferings My siblings have the same mean mother and she makes us all play; dragging us around to venues all over the south west! She says something about teaching us teamwork, healthy lifestyles and discipline. Maybe she just likes driving.

My mother insists upon knowing where we are at all times. You’d think we were on a chain gang. She has to know who our friends are and where we’re going. She even insists on meeting the parents if we’re going to an overnight party. Mean!

I am nearly ashamed to admit it, but my Mum has consequences when we break her rules. Not once, but every time we have a mind of our own and do as we please. Can you imagine someone actually depriving a child of access to social media just because he was on tic toc when he was supposed to be doing an assessment task for English? Now you can begin to see how mean she really is.

Why, oh why, did I have to have a mother who makes me feel different from my friends?

She makes us work. We have to wash dishes, make beds, learn to cook and all sorts of cruel things.

I think she lays awake at night thinking up mean things for us to do to.

I stand a little taller and I am filled with pride when my children call me mean. Because, you see, I thank God, He gave me the meanest mother in the whole world.

The worst is yet to come. She always insists upon telling the truth. She believes my teachers more than me when they say I forget things. Other mothers bring their stuff up for them, but my mother insists on me taking responsibility. Other mothers allow their kids to lie in bed sick and miss school. Not mine. And our grades have to be good.

When will this talking, demanding and meanness end? I can hear her now. Yes Mum, you’re right, again. It won’t end …. Not until I complete school and maybe attain some higher education at TAFE or uni.

Not until I’ve grown into a spiritually centred, agile graduate. Not until I become a faithful, educated, honest adult, and a good man.

You know what, Mum tells me that one day I might try to raise my own children and that I’ll stand a little taller and be filled with pride when my children call me mean. I guess I will. Thank you, God, Thank you for giving me the meanest mother in the whole world.

As a Marist school we have a special devotion to Mary, who was called to be the mother of Christ. The month of May is set aside by the Catholic Church for all of us to think about Mary and to try to see Jesus’ life and death through her eyes. One way we can do this is by praying the Rosary. At St Gregory’s many staff and students gathered in the Chapel each Monday during May to pray the Rosary. As we repeat the praying of the Hail Mary, we think about particular times in Mary’s life, especially those times when she was present with Jesus.

Champagnat Mass The feast of Saint Marcellin Champagnat celebrates the connection we have here at Saint Gregory’s, to the global Marist family. Saint Marcellin started primary schools in the country areas of France over 200 years ago to give an education to children who

would not normally have received that opportunity.

Today there are Marist schools and other ministries in over 80 countries around the world.

To be Marist is to be a follower of Jesus, and we live this way in the Catholic tradition. Our prayer was that we be enriched by the celebration of Eucharist so that we can continue to breathe the Spirit of life and share the message of Christ with others.

During the Responsorial Psalm as we sang our song of praise asking God to empower us with the Holy Spirit, we welcomed Kindergarten to their first College Mass at St Gregory’s. Each of them was crowned with a symbol of fire, symbolising the Holy Spirit alive in each of them. We prayed that in this community they will be inspired and guided by the Holy Spirit and breathe that same Spirit to others.

Citations for recipients of the 2021 Champagnat Medallions Alexander Sheedy, Year 1 Alexander is a friendly and caring student who, at a young age already exemplifies many of the Marist qualities. With his gentle and caring nature he always looks out for others and constantly offers assistance and encouragement to those in need. Alexander is a very attentive student who gives his best at all times and strives for excellence. His positive disposition and love of learning is recognised and appreciated by staff and students. Alexander is a reliable and responsible student who demonstrates a wonderful sense of pride in being a member of the College and a great passion for family. He is a good role model for all students in the Junior School.

Daniel Poonattu, Year 6 Daniel demonstrates a strong mind and gentle heart in his interactions with his teachers and peers. He models the five characteristics of Marist as follows: Daniel is always present in everything he does, he is welcoming to those in his grade and to others in our community. Daniel displays humility in the way he carries himself and how he approaches life at St Greg’s. He is humble in his class work, always seeking and accepting feedback to further challenge himself.

Daniel can be counted on to see a need within the class and school and use his initiative to do something about it. Daniel works hard in every aspect of school life. He is confident and generous in his actions towards others. Daniel is a kind and attentive big brother to Nathaniel and to his Kindergarten buddy.

Daniel is honest, respectful and can see the beauty and abilities of others. Daniel is a natural leader who other students look up to. His actions are a reflection of him following in the footsteps of Jesus.

William Carter, Year 7 William is determined, committed and dedicated to all he pursues. He is reliable, well-mannered and expresses the Champagnat qualities of a strong mind and gentle heart on a daily basis through his hard work and humility. Through his actions and relationships with staff and peers, William has been described as a young man willing to take on any challenge. William always goes above and beyond and expects only the best from himself. The love of work shown by William is evident in everything from Art to English, his relationship with his peers, commitment to sports or his gift for public speaking.

In summary, William is a happy, cheerful young man who is a great role model for all around him who seek to understand what a fine young man illustrates. He loves to learn, and he loves to chat!

Andrew Nothdurfter, Year 8 Andrew is a respectful and pleasant student who exemplifies the Pillars of Marist Identity. He demonstrates a Love of Work through his engagement and participation in his studies.

He is attentive to the learning intentions of lessons and shows a quiet determination in completing tasks with distinction. Andrew is a dedicated sportsman who has experienced many successes in the sport of Swimming, a sport characterised by many hours of disciplined and dedicated training. Andrew has represented the College in MCS and Combined Catholic Colleges Swim Teams.

Andrew demonstrates Simplicity by ‘doing good quietly’, he is straightforward and genuine. He is humble about his varied achievements, he rarely seeks attention or invites accolade. It is through these qualities that we can say, without hesitation, he has a truly gentle heart. He is a most deserving recipient of this award in recognition of his disciplined and consistent approach to all areas of school life.

Travis Martin, Year 9 Travis is a student who strives to achieve his very best in all endeavours. Travis has the Marist Charism of humility; he quietly contributes to many facets of life at the College without fuss or the need for recognition. Travis is a dedicated student who completes tasks on time and above expectations.

Travis’ modest demeanour is aligned with genuine personal pride and a commitment to excellence.

Travis is always polite and respectful to not only his teachers but to his peers. Travis accepts work gracefully and is keen to challenge himself to be better in all his endeavours. His sense of humour,

humility and compassion is well grounded in the strongest of principles instilled in him from a young age. Travis is always kind and generous to younger children in the school - especially on the bus. Travis is a credit to his school, his family and, most importantly, himself.

Jack Noy, Year 10 Jack is a student who always strives to achieve his best in all endeavours. He is a loyal, generous and humble young man who demonstrates a keen interest to learn. He has a joyful manner and his peers and teachers alike find it a pleasure to interact with him.

Jack is a warm and happy person who can always be relied upon to give his best. He is a credit to his family and the College community. He is mature, reliable and constantly seeks higher standards. Jack clearly exhibits the characteristics of Marcellin Champagnat.

Lucas Bucca, Year 11 Lucas is a selfless, honest and genuine young man with a strong sense of commitment.

His positive nature and genuine presence aligns perfectly with his actions and sense of responsibility. Through this and his sense of compassion, Lucas has gained the respect of all within the St Gregory’s College community, staff and students alike. It has been stated that Lucas has a heart of gold. He is mature, respectful and a positive role model to students of all ages. Lucas’ modest demeanour is on par with a genuine personal pride and determination to achieve his best. He is a friendly and reliable young man who displays a strong sense of community, often willingly volunteering to be involved to support others or simply by ‘checking in’ to see how others are coping with life. Through his involvement in a wide range of co-curricular activities, Lucas aims to capitalise on every opportunity presented to him. As this young man strives to live in the mould of a true member of a Marist community, many would suggest he epitomises the unique spirit that is held by a genuine young man of St Gregory’s.

Joshua Newell, Year 12 Joshua is a true embodiment of all the characteristics of St Marcellin. He is an honourable young man who consistently places the needs of others above his own, he leads not only by example, but more importantly he leads through his service to others. Joshua is indeed a credit to himself, his family, friends and to the College. He has a quiet honour about him.

Joshua truly understands and appreciates the value of dedication and hard work, and these are qualities that are much admired in him by others. Joshua is always working behind the scenes to help others.

He is an excellent example of humility, modesty, and service. He works quietly to help others achieve their best and wants nothing in return, as the hard work is reward enough for this young man. He is incredibly trustworthy, and he is an individual that is always a pleasure to be around, consistently displaying an enthusiasm and joy for all aspects of life that with which he is currently involved. He is a fine role model who gives his all to every endeavour he is involved in.

Joshua is an excellent example of what it truly means to be a fine young Marist.

Mr Edward Stefanski, Community Award This award recognises someone in our St Gregory’s community who makes an exemplary contribution to the life and values of the College. The essential criteria is a person of strong mind and gentle heart. There is no doubt that the recipient of this award for 2021 is one such person. Congratulations Mr Edward Stefanski.

The word humility comes from the Latin humilis meaning of the earth. Like Marcellin, Ed is deeply connected to the country and the land and, as the word suggests, Ed is a man of great humility and simplicity. He is unassuming and delights in the success of others. He is passionate for life and exhibits great compassion for others.

The urban dictionary defines a gentleman as one who does not cower to outside forces and whose character is evident in his presence. People feel comfortable in Ed’s presence. He is a man deeply confident in and comfortable with his faith, yet never pious or arrogant.

Love of work is a core characteristic of the Marist charism, modelled by Marcellin as he established the Little Brothers of Mary and built The Hermitage in Lyon, whilst running his Parish of LaValla. Ed too has an incredibly strong work ethic evident in his thorough preparation of lessons, as well as his attention to every detail as he works in the team to organise the many Agricultural shows and opportunities for our students. He is a regular attendee at Retreat and is willing to give of his time and of himself. He loves to learn and has many interests which he shares with our students – he is an avid reader, camper, bushwalker, and loves to tinker with cars and machines as well.

These varied interests and his love of the rural life has allowed Ed to develop empathy with boys from the bush and strong relationships with many young men in the boarding community but he has also inspired many of our day boys and city boys to participate in the Agricultural and other cocurricular programs. He has incredibly high expectations for his students and himself.

Ed’s own philosophy of teaching states, ‘Through fostering a love of learning, positive role modelling and enriching students’ lives, I intend to become a better teacher and person.’ A man, of strong mind and gentle heart, Ed is an ideal role model for our students and many people are better because of him.

The Marist Association of St Marcellin Champagnat This is a faith community of over 800, including Marist Brothers, lay women and men, and clergy.

It is an expression of the wider catholic Church that embraces God’s mission among ourselves as an Association and with the Marist spiritual family around the world. The local branch of St Gregory’s now has over 20 members and at the Champagnat Mass we joined in a moment of renewal: Centre our lives on God who calls us to prayer and action; deepen our experience and communion with each other and with all life. Radiate hope through hospitality, availability, and spiritual liveliness.

St Greg’s Students branch out to connect to Community Students in Year 4 at St Gregory’s College Junior School have been exploring how reaching out in love and service can connect communities; locally and globally. In their Unit of Inquiry, the students have explored and investigated various people and organisations that reach out in love and service to support the wide range of needs present within our community.

Throughout the unit they were exposed to different organisations such as Caritas, Marist Solidarity, Orange Sky, Helping Hands and St Vincent de Paul.

Mr Jordan from St Vincent de Paul Macarthur, visited the classes and shared the vision, mission and numerous day to day services they provide to people in the local area. A panel of students from the school community involved in outreach programs, also shared their work, experiences and motivation.

The staff had recently participated in a Marist Spirituality Day in which they hand-made Rosary beads to send to families in Timor Leste. The families see the Rosary as a form of protection and help guide them in their spiritual and faith journey. Photos of the staff taking action were shown to the students who then further assisted by contributing to the making of more Rosary beads to send overseas. These beads were accompanied by personal letters to those they prayed for as they made the Rosary Beads.

This practical experience further strengthens the spirit of community that exists between the Marist Community here in Australia and our brothers and sisters in Timor Leste.

Learning languages provides the opportunity for students to engage with the linguistic and cultural diversity of the world and its peoples…students develop an intercultural capability and an understanding of the role of language and culture in communication and become more accepting of difference and diversity. They develop understanding of global citizenship, and reflect on their own heritage, values, culture and identity. (NSW Syllabus, Spanish K-10)

S

t Gregory’s Junior School is a PYP Candidate school and the decision was made this year to adopt Spanish as the Language taught from Kindergarten to Year 6. The decision to incorporate Languages Other Than English (LOTE) into the Junior School has been in the planning for the last couple of years and it is wonderful to see this come into fruition. Seeing students authentically engaged in learning the Spanish language and the various cultural aspects has been pleasing to witness.

Spanish was selected as the LOTE language because: • it is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world • it is the official language of more than 20 countries • it is one of the easiest languages to learn • Spanish is spoken across different continents • it provides opportunities for students to gain insights into the contributions that have been made by Spanish speaking communities to Australian society and to the global community.

Mrs Paula Grados was employed as the inaugural Spanish Teacher and has led the implementation

of the Spanish program in the Junior School (K-6) with distinction. She has planned engaging and fun activities to immerse students in the language through literature and music. Within the first few weeks the students were greeting their teachers and engaging in basic dialogue. The dedicated Spanish room is colourful and rich with language – a vibrant learning environment for all students to fall in love with learning Spanish!

The students are open-minded and are learning to be multilingual communicators. The parent community have also embraced the new Language program with enthusiasm. The exploration of the Spanish language has created an organic dialogue about their own cultural backgrounds. Many of the students have gone home to ask about their own heritage and explore similarities to the Spanish language. They come to class with lovely stories about their parents and grandparents’ cultures. The students have also made an effort to ask questions about countries that speak Spanish and where these are located on a map, which has created fun and spontaneous Geography lessons.

The second half of 2021 and throughout 2022 looks rather busy for the College in terms of capital works around the Junior School & Senior School campuses.

I

t is exciting to know that four major projects will be completed as part of the 2021 capital works program. These projects are as follows: Junior School – Undercover Basketball & Netball Court + Outdoor Volleyball Court Senior School – New Undercover Entrance to the College Administration Building and Top Car Park Works Senior School – Four New Basketball Courts Senior School – New Futsal & PDHPE Playing Court 1. Junior School – Undercover Basketball & Netball Court + Outdoor Volleyball Court

The Junior School is in desperate need of additional undercover recreation space for out of class activities, PDHPE classes, IPSSO sport, assemblies, functions, etc. The new undercover court will also have a covered way joining to the main teaching block.

A synthetic grass volleyball court will adjoin the new undercover court.

2. Senior School – New Undercover Entrance to the College Administration Building and Top Car Park Works

Due to the ongoing deterioration of the red brick pavers at the entrance to the Senior School Administration area, near the College Uniform Shop / Brother Luke Hall and moving to and from the Chapel, a new undercover entrance is being constructed linking the Top Car Park outside the Brother Senan Boarding House to the College Administration Building. The new work will incorporate ramps for disabled access, new College signage, new paving, and a second access point from the Top Car Park area.

3. Senior School – Four New Basketball Courts

The four outdoor basketball courts in the Senior School are in need of upgrading and replacement due to ongoing weathering and deterioration of the playing surfaces, goal posts and court perimeter netting. Four new basketball courts will be built in the same precinct as the existing courts.

Two of the new courts will be covered by a high barrel-vault roof for weather protection. These courts will also have the ability to be used for outdoor functions with lighting, sound and video functionality incorporated into the design.

4. Senior School – New Futsal & PDHPE Playing Court

Part of the grassed area outside the Brother Luke Hall overlooking the new basketball courts will give way to a new competition size, artificial grass Futsal court, with surrounding seating in a stadium style design. This additional playing space will benefit our students for their PDHPE classes, during Thursday sport, and at break times.

Our building contractor for these four projects, Reitsma Constructions have vast experience in school capital works, and we look forward over the second half of 2021 to working closely with them to realise these important projects. I take this opportunity to thank Simon and Irene from Bow Goold Architects for their design work on these projects.

STEM facility - Theatre, Music & Food Technology

During the second half of 2021 we will also be working closely with Simon and Irene from Bow Goold Architects as we finalise the design work for our new STEM / Music / Food Technology / 200 seat Theatre building which will be built during 2022 ready for occupation in 2023. The new building will be built on the vacant site at the rear of the Marian Learning Centre, adjoining the Visual Arts and Technologies block.

Initially, we had thought the block would house STEM and a Theatre, but design work has now incorporated news spaces for Music and a Food Technology room.

It certainly is exciting to see how the design of this building is progressing with great input from staff and colleagues from other schools with expertise in these areas. Later in 2021, I will be able to

provide final designs for the new building which will be a great addition to our College.

Finally, work is also underway looking at the renovation of the learning spaces in the lower classrooms of the Heritage (000) Block, and classroom spaces in the 100 Block, 200 Block and 400 Block. These classroom renovations will be to ensure we have contemporary teaching and learning spaces into the future.

Ongoing works on our playing fields and the Boarding Houses are on our agenda also for 2022 and beyond. Certainly, exciting times at St Gregory’s as we witness these works taking place and the facilities for our students, both current and future are greatly enhanced.

ur young people and their families are invited to stop and spend a little time in contemplation or prayer, with Rosary beads, prayer cards and other prayer aids available to assist.

Our Prayer of Mary Loving God, we thank you for the gift of Mary our Good Mother. We are grateful for her gentle protection and her tender care of our Marist family.

National Simultaneous Storytime in Space Mrs Rachael Cosentino - Teacher Librarian/Literacy Specialist

National Simultaneous Storytime is an initiative of the Australian Library and Information Association. This initiative aims to see over one million young people reading the same book, at the same time, throughout the world. On Wednesday 19 May, our students were some of the 1.8 million students in 25,500 locations reading this space themed book.

W

hilst many locations participated by watching an astronaut in space read this year’s book, our Junior School Library was transformed into our very own space pocket satellite for zooming into each of our classrooms.

Teacher Librarian/Literacy Specialist, Mrs Cosentino and Espanol Teacher, Senora Grados together read this year’s text, “Give me some space” by Philip Bunting. With Spanish Language

teaching commencing this year in the Junior School it was a wonderful opportunity to present the book in both English and Spanish and the teachers, along with the Junior School students loved the experience.

We started 2021 with high hopes for a fun-filled production. As last year’s musical was cancelled due to the pandemic, the boys and girls of the Colleges were itching to get back on stage and to be immersed in the world of performing arts.

I

t was decided, with this main intention in mind, that the staff production team from St Patrick’s College wanted to stage “Xanadu”. This year’s production was in collaboration with St Gregory’s College.

Collectively, we wanted to give students the opportunity to simply have fun, develop and “play” with their characters.

In Week 3 of Term 1, the dynamic production team from St Patrick’s College kick-started the audition process. By Week 5, our leads and ensemble members were cast. Many weeks of practice later the singing, dancing and acting all came together neatly on the opening sell-out performance night on Friday 4 June and was backed up by two more performances on Saturday 5 June 2021.

The students and a couple of staff members, Mrs Tweedie and Mr Papadoulous, strapped on their roller skates, pumped up the glitter and brought out the glow sticks and glam 80’s outfits. It was a laugh-out-loud musical production of the 1980 film. The plot of “Xanadu” follows

Clio played by Tavara Sofia, the lovely and talented Greek muse who decided to put on some roller skates, legwarmers, and an Australian accent as Kira to help Sonny Malone played by Jordan-Leigh Estephan, a chalk artist to rediscover his own creativity.

With both help and hindrance from the other muses and their strange magic - but also from the businessman named Danny Maguire played by Elliot Power and the muse of memory, Sophie Martin,they helped Sonny and Kira work to build a roller disco. We mustn’t forget one of our lead vocalists, Leo Malaseilia.

However, without the ensemble, this production would not be complete. Many individuals had their own “big moments” and everyone should be proud of their contribution and performance. It is experiences like these that are offered at the Colleges that stay with the students forever. “Xanadu” was truly the perfect choice of production for our Colleges.

Over the three performances, these young professionals embraced their roles and the positive vibe backstage was contagious. Suddenly, we were all suspended in time. It made the whole cast say (sing), I’m Alive and Don’t Walk Away.

Choreography and tunes collided with excitement as the cast belted out All Over the World, Dancin’ and everyone’s favourite, Xanadu.

Thank you to our supervising team from St Gregory’s College which included Mr Papadoulous, Mrs Dooner, Miss Phillips, Mrs Falas, Mrs Armbruster and Miss Doherty.

Finally, this production could not have been possible without the dedication of the staff production team who were patient and remained passionate throughout the production. This team consisted of Mr Combes, Miss Randell, Mrs Tannous, Ms Glase, Mrs Samyia and Mrs Singles.

We are very thankful to have had the opportunity to work with such a caring and talented group of colleagues. Thank you to the supportive parents of the cast members. Finally, thank you to the College Principals, Mrs Sue Lennox and Mr Lee MacMaster, who continue to foster the collaborative connection between the two Colleges.

St Gregory’s College has been extremely proud of the way the young men in both Year 7 and Year 8 have started the school year.

Year 7 Camp

A

fter spending the first term getting to know each other, the Marist values and ethos of the school, the students eagerly awaited their next challenge. Year 7 Camp provided an opportunity for the young men to continue to develop their relationships with peers and staff, whilst also pushing their understanding of comfort zones. There was an element of anxiety in the lead up to the event about the upcoming days away from home, but this was immediately dissipated upon arrival by the excitement and enthusiasm that new opportunities provided.

At Narrabeen, the students participated in a variety of engaging activities that helped them grow both individually and as a team.

These activities were each designed to cater to every student, keeping them all challenged and motivated to achieve to their best. The water sports were an instant hit with all students, as they fearlessly participated in kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding and raft building. The opportunity for students to put on their bright orange

vests and get into the unknown waters of Narrabeen required no convincing from the team leaders. There was no shortage of fun and excitement outside of the waters, as students were involved in a range of activities such as archery, bush walking, and initiative games. These mentally and physically challenging games kept students busy until the night-time activities and welldeserved dinner breaks.

A focal point of camp was to continue to develop the Agile Learner within each of the young men. The young men were encouraged to ‘make the effort’ with all activities and with supporting each other through the ups and downs, to ensure a grounded and relational approach, which we hope will carry on into their personal lives. After a term of discussing what it means to be responsible, camp allowed a practical approach to put these newly acquired skills into practice. An additional supporting factor was the guidance and support offered by our senior students, who willingly gave up their time to act as role models and mentors to our Year 7

cohort. Tuesday night’s Liturgy was a high point with students exploring the ideas of responsibility and relational development through a spiritually centred approach.

Students were also encouraged to live the values of compassion throughout the camp and staff could not have been more proud of these young men. I hope all the young men came away with a great learning experience and spent some quality time talking to their family about the trip.

Year 8 Camp

T

he impact of the pandemic on 2020 was well documented. The 2020 Year 7 Camp was cancelled and rescheduled for early 2021 with an excited group of boys now in Year 8. The influence of the pandemic continued to interfere with regular camp management.

Restrictions around social distancing and infection control meant that regular and much anticipated camp activities such as High Ropes, Abseiling and the Flying Fox were all unable to go ahead in 2021.

Accommodation requirements saw half the number of boys were assigned to each cabin meaning we effectively had boys sleeping in all three separate accommodation centres at Narrabeen spanning the breadth of the

Sydney Academy Campus. In typical fashion, the students continued to show an admirable level of flexibility in facing these changes.

Activities such as Raft Building, Bushwalking, Damper Making, Stand Up Paddle Boarding and the Escape Room were new activities instituted by the Academy staff which brought a freshness to Camp which was enjoyed by boys and staff alike. Lake Narrabeen provides an impressive backdrop for the many water activities enjoyed by the boys. We enjoyed the best of February’s weather with long days of warm summer sun.

We were fortunate to have a dedicated group of Homeroom staff who showed a great level of dedication to this camp. The staff were presented with many additional challenges when coping with new activities and managing a large group of boys spread over several cabins and activities. Their support of the 2021 Camp was much appreciated by the boys and by me.

Another important addition to the 2021 Camp was a Liturgy that was conducted by the College’s Director of Mission, Mrs Cathie Clarke. The Liturgy focussed on our camp theme of Kindness and encouraged the boys to act with kindness towards each other and to witness acts of

kindness in others. The Liturgy finished late on the second night and gave the Senior students who accompanied staff on camp an opportunity to lead some aspects of the ceremony which they did with distinction.

The camp session finished at lunchtime on Wednesday. There were many boys who, without prompting, approached staff members, and thanked them for their support at camp.

It was pleasing to witness these moments of appreciation and kindness reinforcing the goodness which abounds in the hearts and minds of many of the young men in Year 8.

Junior School Show Team Make History Mrs Diana Ivancic - Assistant Head of Junior School

St Gregory’s College Campbelltown has a long history of competing in various aspects of Agriculture. Up until 1990, it was home to cattle, a piggery, a commercial dairy and a rodeo.

F

or the past 95 years, young men have competed in Cattle and Sheep competitions and programs; including the Royal Easter Show, Camden Show and Dubbo Show.

In 2021, the students made history as the first Girl and Boy Junior School Team in the school’s 95-year history. The College’s very first Junior School team of students, participated in Moss Vale and Hawkesbury shows.

With the opening of a co-educational Junior School in 2018, these eleven-year-olds are the first Junior School students to have joined the St Gregory’s College Show Team. They have been training each week with Miss Hayley Mahoney, Agricultural Leader of Learning.

The students have learned to handle the cattle, groom them and parade them independently. An amazing opportunity for these young girls and boys. It has also been a great opportunity for the senior boys to mentor and support the students during the preparation and showing.

Judging by its success, this promises to continue to become stronger every year!

Br Luke died gently and peacefully at 4:10 am on Friday, 26 February 2021. The Community Leader, Br Bryan Davis, and Br Luke’s two nieces, Gina and Sabine, were with him when he slipped away. His life ended where he wanted it to, at the place he has called home for all but two years of his long Religious Life, St Gregory’s College Campbelltown.

o Brother has been as closely associated or as deeply identified with any one school as Br Luke has been with St Gregory’s, and it is unlikely any other will be.

John Smyth was born on 14 April 1923 to Michael and Josephine Smyth who owned a farm at Dookie in rural Victoria. He was baptised at St Monica’s on 30 April 1923 and confirmed by the Bishop of Sandhurst on 28 May 1933.

He met his first Marist Brother when his mother enrolled him at St Gregory’s College in 1938. Encouraged by Br William Molloy, he left St Gregory’s after only one year to continue his secondary education at the Juniorate at Mittagong. This led to the Novitiate where in July 1943, he received the habit of the Marist Brothers and was given the religious name of Luke.

While most Brothers have a series of appointments to their name, Br Luke’s list is simple and short – one year at Hamilton, one year at Bondi Beach (so he could study Agriculture at Sydney Technical College)

and 75 years at St Gregory’s. There was very little that Br Luke did not know about the College or the Campbelltown-Camden region.

His ministry at Campbelltown was full and busy. Like most Brothers, he taught classes, supervised dorms and boarders’ study, coached sporting teams and was involved in all the aspects of College life. However, there was one major difference. He was a farmer, a man of the land. He taught agriculture, ran the dairy, managed the

Campbelltown farm, (and for 15 years the Mittagong farm as well).

He also established the College Rodeo, which ran for decades, as a way of providing funds for College projects. He was a farmer, through and through. He would read the newspaper, “The Land”, carefully to stay abreast of news and developments. In fact, his outstanding ministry to young people was shaped in a particular way by this single fact. ‘Luke the Farmer’ was down-to-earth and had an innate understanding of seasons and change in young people’s lives as much as in nature. He related well to them.

They admired him. There is a photo in the College Archives that captures that special relationship he had with the boys. It shows a young Luke, dressed in black habit, standing in front of his Under15 Football team. They are looking at him with real admiration and happiness.

Luke’s contribution to the life of young people did not stop at their graduation. Because he was “always there,” he remained a contact and focus for past students. He knew different generations of families as in turn they were educated at St. Greg’s. Ex-students enjoyed returning to the College and meeting up with him. His presence and constancy were great gifts to the College. At the time of his Jubilee one of his former students wrote: “Br Luke, a gentle giant of a man is a role model for what is best in masculinity and commitment”. The naming of the Hall at the College in his honour demonstrated the respect and admiration that the St Gregory’s community had for him.

You can imagine that someone who has been in the one community and school for such an extended period could easily be a naysayer and resister to change. This was never the way Br Luke operated. He may have had his doubts, but he never attempted to use his influence to obstruct. He let every Principal and Community Leader (and there were many in

his time) make their own decisions and take their own path. He adapted to lay Leadership of the College. Even when he was told that most of the farm was to be sold off for an urban development, he did not try to block the move. He knew that change was inevitable, so he decided to start a nursery to provide plants for the new suburb, Gregory Hills.

In Marist circles we talk much about the five characteristics - Presence, Simplicity, Family Spirit and Love of Work. Br Luke lived these, all of them. He was a marvellous role model, not just to the students, but also to staff and Brothers.

He really was a great “community man”. He loved the Brothers. His ready smile, warm personality, willingness to listen and talk to anyone, meant he was always good company, in community as elsewhere. He put everyone at ease and made them feel important and welcome. He also possessed a great sense of humour. He had the ability to see the fun in life. As his friend Br Michael Haynes noted in his Jubilee tribute: “His humour is never hurtful or vindictive. He loves the cut and thrust of repartee with the Brothers and is not averse to the occasional practical joke.”

The Brother Luke Hall was opened on 22 July 2015

T

his Hall is named in honour of one of St Gregory’s most remarkable ex-students. John Smyth was born in the small Victorian town of Dookie in 1923. His first contact with St Gregory’s was when he arrived at the College as a border in 1938.

After just one year he left the College to pursue his vocation as a Marist Brother. Receiving the Marist habit in 1943 he was given the religious name of Brother Luke. In 1946 Br Luke was appointed to join the staff of St Gregory’s. Apart from two short stints at other schools he has been a member of the St Gregory’s community ever since. During his time at the College, Br Luke has filled many positions including teacher, dormitory master, sport’s coach, Brother’s community leader and farm manager. His capacity for hard work, amiable nature and willingness to be of service to others has led to him having a profound and last effect on the lives of many. In recognition of his unique contribution to the College this Hall has been named in his honour.

Boarding Family Weekend Mr Luke Morrissey - Director of Boarding

The St Gregory’s annual Boarding Family Weekend was held on mid-May at the College. Having missed this opportunity in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was wonderful to have the College brimming with families again celebrating their son’s successes.

W

e were also blessed to have many students from the Class of 2020 there to celebrate with them, as they couldn’t do this last year. Having our Old Boys as part of the weekend made the event even more special.

On the Friday, it was encouraging to see many families engaging in the student-parent-teacher interview process and then gathering for dinner in the evening.

The Rugby Gala Day on the Saturday, despite the freezing temperatures, turned out to be a great day with close contests across all age groups and divisions. A highlight for the families was the jersey presentation from Jason Thompson.

Jason spoke so eloquently about his experiences at St Gregory’s, in particular his sense of family, community and mateship whilst a boarder here.

The highlight of the Gala Day is always the tunnel for the 1st XV with parents enjoying welcoming their son onto the ground.

The most significant event of the weekend is the Family Mass on Saturday night with the parents being able to see and hear the talent the boys possess when it comes to singing. Although COVID-19 did place some restrictions on this event, the students showed their parents how passionate they are about their faith through their singing.

The night finished with a Parent Cocktail Evening and sibling dinner for the students. This was a fun night, with all the boarding parents having the opportunity to mingle.

A massive thank you to the Hill, Alcorn, McDonnell, Elworthy and Sherd families for all their donations that made the event possible. We look forward to 2022 being bigger and better!

Year 10 Family Fun Night Mrs Ally Buckley - Parent Engagement Coordinator

At St Gregory’s we see value in our parents sharing the schooling journey with their sons. We invited Year 10 boys and their parents to a fun filled evening of art and sporting activities.

P

arents were led by their sons to the College Visual Art rooms, to engage in a lesson from our Visual Art staff. There was lots of experimenting as families worked together to create an abstract artwork using coloured and iridescent inks. Mini designs were created as families experimented with the colours to then finally join together to design a larger family piece.

There certainly were lots of different techniques as our artists used straws to blow the ink around the page creating unique designs. The evening concluded with dinner in the Boarders’ Dining Hall and the announcement of the winning abstract artwork.

Parent feedback was very positive with comments about how much fun was had and the great idea of mixing sport and art activities. The parents were very appreciative of the time the College staff gave up away from their own families to share in the Year 10 Family Fun Night.

College Trivia Night Ms Melissa Watts - Communication & Community Engagement Coordinator

On Friday 28 May the College hosted its inaugural Years 7-12 Family Trivia Night.

We had a wonderful turnout from families from Years 7-12, along with their sons, friends and family members. In excess of 140 people attended the evening, and by all accounts had a wonderful night!

T

here was some friendly competition on the night and some very unusual team names, but most importantly, everyone had fun. A big thank you to the hosts, Time For Trivia, who ran the evening perfectly and to Santo’s Pizza on Wheels for the delicious wood-fired pizzas.

There were opportunities for guests to make gold coin donations throughout the evening and with their generosity we raised over $400 for Marist Solidarity. The funds will go to support a school in Timor Leste.

The winners on the night were team, ‘St Elmo’s’ and the winners of the Wooden Spoon award were team, ‘Dynamic Duo’. Congratulations to both teams. We look forward to hosting an even bigger and better night in 2022!

To celebrate Mother’s Day 2021, the Junior School had the privilege of having over 150 ‘Mums’ brave the wet weather and attend our Mother’s Day Breakfast and Liturgy with their sons and daughters.

his was our chance as a College, to thank all the mothers from the St Gregory’s community, for all that they do for the students. We thank all who attended the Mother’s Day Breakfast and shared a lovely morning with us.

We trust that all had a wonderful time as a family in the Junior School.

Our Boarding Community has undergone significant change over the history of the College, but at its core is our regional and agricultural heart. We interviewed some of our current College Boarding Leaders asking about their experiences during their time at the College.

Tell us about yourself. Who are you, where are you from and what do your family do?

Jack Rule - from Cronulla, Dad’s a teacher, Mum works for a water company and delivery.

Benjamin Elworthy - from Gundagai NSW and I have one brother and one sister. We have a farm with my Dad David working as an agronomist at Elders and Mum Sharon working at Valmar.

Lachlan McGufficke - I am a Year 12 boarder at St Gregory’s College. I am from a sheep farm outside of Cooma which is located in the Snowy Mountains.

My Mum works for the Snowy Hydro in the HR Department and my Dad is a Farmer.

Sipiliano Vaohea - I am a Year 12 student from Groote Eylandt and my Mum works at a Land Council and Dad is a Tyre Fitter in the mines in Groote.

When did you start Boarding at St Gregory’s College?

Why did you choose to become a Boarder at St Gregory’s?

Jack Rule - My parents thought that it would suit me and I would be able to experience a lot more things, more than I would if I stayed at home.

Benjamin Elworthy - To experience the opportunities through education and sport and develop skills and habits that would benefit me when I leave school and enter the working world.

Lachlan McGufficke - I chose to become a Boarder at St Gregory’s as I knew many people who came to St Gregory’s and they spoke very highly of the College and of the opportunities they were provided.

Sipiliano Vaohea - My three older brothers came before me and I also wanted to come to St Greg’s too.

Whilst Boarding at St Gregory’s how have you contributed to College life?

Jack Rule - I am a Boarding leader and a member of First Grade teams in Basketball, Rugby Union and Rugby League.

Benjamin Elworthy - I have contributed to the College through sporting commitments such as rugby union, league and cricket.

Lachlan McGufficke - Whilst at St Gregory’s, I’ve contributed to the College life through academics, sporting and co-curricular activities. I have been a part of many sporting teams including rugby league, rugby union, cricket, AFL, touch football and basketball. I have also been a part of the Show Team and I took part in the Toastmaster’s Program. I am currently in the 2021 Year 12 leadership team and I have introduced many initiatives throughout the year to hopefully better the College now and into the future.

Sipiliano Vaohea - Sport & Community service. I am part of the Rugby League team here at St Gregory’s.

How has Boarding at St Gregory’s influenced you?

Jack Rule - It has given me new experiences, travelling to different places, a sense of brotherhood, a strong mind and gentle heart, pride in my mates and my school.

Benjamin Elworthy - Boarding at St Greg’s has influenced me to develop many positive qualities in my everyday life.

Lachlan McGufficke - Boarding at St Gregory’s has led me to become a more independent, respectful, and hard-working person. This is largely due to the people I have encountered throughout my time at St Gregory’s including my mates, teachers, boarding staff, and my sporting coaches who have all been role models for me.

Sipiliano Vaohea - It has influenced me by teaching me the values of mateship and brotherhood. Also, that family isn’t just about being blood related, its about the strong relationships built with each other.

What challenges have you overcome during Boarding?

Jack Rule - Not knowing anyone before coming to school.

Benjamin Elworthy - Challenges I have overcome during my time Boarding at St Greg’s are; being away from the everyday life at home and not seeing my parents every day. Also, I have overcome not being able to see my mates from home regularly and doing the everyday activities like fishing and riding motorbikes.

Lachlan McGufficke - Challenges I have had to overcome during Boarding include being away from home and my family, and most recently the impact of COVID-19 which affected my schooling as well as sport and social life throughout 2020.

Sipiliano Vaohea - The big move from such a small school and island was a challenge for me.

Coming to a new school not knowing anyone and being very shy to introduce myself to others.

What advice would you give to families thinking about Boarding at St Gregory’s for their son?

Jack Rule - Have trust in the Collegel, and think of the experiences they might have at a Boarding College.

The advice I would give to future St Gregory’s Boarding students is to get involved and take advantage of the opportunities provided to them.

What will be your favourite memories of Boarding at St Gregory’s?

Jack Rule - Being with my mates, singing, playing sport and the Boarding House environment.

Benjamin Elworthy - My favourites memories of Boarding at St Greg’s would be playing footy with my mates on weekends.

Lachlan McGufficke - My favourite memories of St Gregory’s Boarding will be the time spent with mates on the sporting field, singing together in Mass and just being with each other in the House and in the Dining Hall.

Benjamin Elworthy - I would advise all families to send their boys to St Greg’s as it will allow them to seek new education and sporting opportunities. This experience will allow them to meet boys from all over Australia and from different backgrounds, allowing them to make lifelong friends.

Lachlan McGufficke - Advice I would give to families when considering Boarding for their son is to have trust in the College. When you come here you feel welcomed and a part of something special.

Marist Service Awards 2021 These awards recognise dedicated service by staff members both at St Gregory’s College and in other Marist ministries.

Year Service Awards In appreciation of ten years of committed and dedicated service to Marist ministries, we extend our thanks and congratulations to the following staff:

Mr Brendan O’Flynn Mr Brendan O’Flynn commenced teaching at the College in January 2011. He is a Technologies teacher working with great dedication and commitment to inspire his students. He leads a fantastic team of staff as the Leader of Learning – Technologies. Mr O’Flynn was also a live-in Boarding Supervisor for three years.

Apart from his passion in his teaching area, Mr O’Flynn is actively involved in a wide range of activities beyond the classroom as a sports coach and he is also an avid participant in outdoor education, which makes him very well suited to another one of his roles as the Coordinator of the Duke of Edinburgh program.

Mr Peter Smith Mr Peter Smith commenced at the College in April 2011. Coming to St Greg’s from a management role with a sports equipment company, Mr Smith then joined the Property and Facilities team at St Greg’s. Mr Smith has made a tremendous contribution to the great work of the Facilities Team and his role is integral to keeping the College functioning and always looking fantastic. Peter also plays a vital role in supporting the work of the Technologies Department in maintaining and servicing equipment. Mr Smith is a gentleman and humble man and truly deserving of our recognition.

Mr Edward Stefanski Mr Edward Stefanski commenced at the College in January 2011. Arriving as an inspired and passionate Old Boy of St Greg’s, Mr Stefanski has a particular passion and love for the Sciences, including Agriculture. Mr Stefanski is a teacher that inspires and challenges students to always give their best. He is also an extremely committed and tireless advocate of the College’s Agricultural program, including being a fantastic contributor to the incredibly successful Show Teams, where he has devoted a phenomenal amount of his own time to provide wonderfully enriching experiences for a wide range of students.

Mr Baldino Vetrano Mr Baldino Vetrano commenced at the College in January 2011 as a Languages Teacher and he also held the position of Year Leader. For three years, he took on the role of Executive Assistant to the Deputy Principal, prior to moving into the position of Pastoral Care Coordinator and then to his current role of Director of Students. Mr Vetrano is well known to all members of the College community. He is passionate about student wellbeing and a wonderfully positive mentor to students who may stray and need to be guided back to the righteous path of being good Christians and virtuous citizens.

Mr Paul Fox Mr Paul Fox has been a member of the College’s Boarding community, first as the Boarding Coordinator for Fingal House and also Live-In Supervisor since January 2001. Notably, Mr Fox has never missed a day of work and throughout the last two decades he has been a stalwart for the Boarding program at St Gregory’s College. Mr Fox has been incredibly generous with his time in giving great service to the community, not just in the Boarding program but also being actively involved in sport and other activities, including being the coach of the ISA First Basketball Team for many years.

Miss Karen Kissick (nee Vardy) Miss Karen Kissick (nee Vardy) was first employed at St Gregory’s College on 27 April 2001 and she recently retired from work on 30 April 2021, after giving just over twenty years of extremely dedicated service. Karen was, for two decades, the College’s Print Room Manager, as a very diligent and dedicated employee and someone who always took great pride in her work.

She was always supportive and helpful and unfailingly committed to helping others. We thank and congratulate Karen for her outstanding service and we wish her a happy and fulfilling retirement.

Mrs Michelle Gardiner Mrs Michelle Gardiner commenced at the College in 2005 in the role of Literacy Support Teacher and she is now the College’s Leader of Learning – English, a position she has held since January 2016. Prior to St Greg’s, Mrs Gardiner completed eight years of service from 1993 to 2000 at Mount Carmel Catholic High School. Prior to commencing her teaching career in in 1993, Mrs Gardiner was a media analyst. We acknowledge Mrs Gardiner as an extremely experienced and dedicated teacher who engages her students with her passion for literature. We also acknowledge her extensive contribution to debating and public speaking over an extended period of time.

Mr Lee MacMaster Mr Lee MacMaster commenced as the College Principal at St Gregory’s College in 2019. Prior to St Greg’s he was the Principal at St Andrew’s College Redlynch (Cairns) for seven years. Before this, his work in Marist education included five years at St Joseph’s College Hunters Hill from 2007 to 2011 as the Director of Teaching and Learning and twelve years at Trinity College Lismore from 1995 to 2006 as the Assistant Principal – Dean of Studies. We acknowledge Mr MacMaster as an incredibly enthusiastic and passionate educational leader who gives himself selflessly and wholeheartedly to St Greg’s and who is someone who is always present, fully immersed and engaged with all aspects of the College community.

Mrs Lucy Willoughby Mrs Lucy Willoughby commenced at the College in January 2001 as the College Receptionist, a position she has held continuously for the last two decades. Over the years, Lucy’s role has encompassed a wide range of responsibilities within the broad area of Student Services, including student awards. Mrs Willoughby has been the very friendly, warm, responsive and welcoming first point of contact for the thousands of people who have called or visited the College over all of these years. She is an unassuming and humble person, who always strives to give her best and make you feel valued and respected. Combined 90 Years of Service to St Gregory’s College The next three members of staff have collectively, very faithfully and diligently, served the community of St Gregory’s College for more than ninety years in total. Two of these staff members are being recognised for twenty-five years of service and one for forty years of continuous service. All three are similar in the way they have gone about their work without fanfare or seeking the limelight, working behind the scenes with great dedication and pride in the College whilst serving with great commitment and distinction.

Mrs Anna Blacklow Hundreds if not thousands of students and staff have benefited enormously from the incredibly efficient, committed and extremely gracious and humble Mrs Anna Blacklow. Mrs Blacklow has been the mainstay working behind the scenes without fanfare or expectation of recognition as an incredibly loyal and passionate member of staff. She is a wonderful, faith-filled person. In her current role managing the College Laundry, she has provided wonderful service and always worked for the betterment of the members of this community.

It certainly is not just those in the Boarding community who should be highly appreciative of Mrs Blacklow as she has gone above and beyond to serve all in the community. Having commenced at the College in February 1996, Mrs Blacklow has more than twenty-five years of continuous service to Gregory’s College – an amazing achievement!

Mr David Gray Commencing at St Greg’s on 29 January 1996, Mr David Gray is the Leading Hand for the College Cleaning Team. Mr Gray is a very humble and unassuming man, but he certainly takes great pride in his work by always ensuring that the College is spick and span. Mr Gray works the late shift and he would frequently be the last person on site and awake, often here into the early hours of the morning. Whilst he rightly gets a little frustrated when respect isn’t shown for the work of him and his team, he doggedly goes about his duties because he really does love this place! He is quick-witted and loves a joke, but the maroon and sky blue runs deep in his veins, almost as much as the Myrtle Green and Cardinal Red of his beloved South Sydney Rabbitohs! Our sincere thanks and gratitude are extended to Mr Gray as we acknowledge his outstanding quarter-century of service.

Mrs Sharon Mulholland Mrs Sharon Mulholland commenced her employment at the College in 1981, 24 FEAST OF ST MARCELLIN CHAMPAGNAT four decades ago! Mrs Mulholland is a very dedicated and committed staff member, someone who is highly valued and most definitely very TEMPLATE 2 loyal given her continuous commitment to serving this community. Mrs Mulholland has worked as a Laboratory Assistant and provided outstanding service and support to the Science department. In addition, she has been a valued team member of the College’s Support Staff. Although Mrs Mulholland would not be well known to some members of the College community, she is always there working away with 24 FEAST OF ST MARCELLIN CHAMPAGNAT great tenacity and an enduring commitment to her work, never looking for acknowledgement and always being very humble.

New teachers welcomed to the Senior School in 2021.

This semester St Greg’s Senior School has benefitted from the arrival of several new members to our teaching staff.

Mrs Lauren Armbruster English Teacher Lauren arrived at St Greg’s with a wealth of experience and creativity behind her. In 2015 she completed her Master of Arts (Creative Writing) degree by writing a full-length Young Adult verse novel. Not surprisingly, one of Lauren’s passions is to develop the creative writing skills of her students. She has also had two English study guides published by Five Senses Education. Throughout her career, Lauren has led English and Diverse Learning departments, and at Clancy Catholic College was the Leader of Teaching and Learning, where she established whole-school programs aimed at helping students become stronger learners.

Lauren became a teacher partly because she had great models in her own highschool teachers, but more particularly because she loves writing and creativity.

She says, “I always dreamed of having my own students and my own room and honestly being in the classroom teaching amazing texts is my happy place!”

I asked Lauren what advice she would give to young people today, and she answered,

“To try a little bit of everything and

understand that education and schooling is about creating a whole human being… Life and being human is not just about looking for the relationship between a job and school, because there’s so much more to the full-time apprenticeship of becoming an adult than choosing how to earn money.

”

Mr Craig Ashby Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Liaison (K-12) Craig’s arrival at St Greg’s was much anticipated, for he had made such an impression at his interview with his infectiously positive outlook on the potential for this important role in the College.

Craig is particularly interested in the “reclamation, implementation, and maintenance” of Aboriginal languages in schools, for he sees this has long-term holistic impacts on school, community, culture, and identity. Craig has successfully completed a Master of Indigenous Languages Education degree, and in 2020 was presented an award by the NSW Department of Education for Outstanding Leadership in Aboriginal Languages Education.

When asked why he became a teacher, Craig said, experienced firsthand the failures “of[I]education systems for Indigenous

peoples. I wanted to create positive change for my community and for all First Nations peoples and I believe that the only way to do this is to create change from within. Becoming a teacher was not a career choice but necessity… for my community.

”

“[I was also] strongly influenced by

the Marist Brothers in their care, love of learning, generosity, patience, and compassion. The Marist Brothers were the most positive male role models in my life growing up.

”

Craig has taught in remote and regional NSW, with the large community of St Greg’s no doubt requiring a bit of getting used to!

What has stayed the same for Craig are his beliefs about the role of teachers; that teachers inspire and empower students; that they support learning through partnerships; and that they must believe equally in all students and their capacity to learn.

Mr Glenn Duggan HSIE Teacher When Glenn interviewed by Zoom for this teaching position, he was sitting in his office in a Riverina School where he had been Acting Deputy Principal for some time. He was keen to return to Sydney and resume his passion for HSIE teaching.

Glenn impressed the panel with his presence (even from a distance!) and his knowledge of his subject.

Glenn has had valuable real-world experience in business and economics fields, including in banking, accounting insolvency, and strata management. But Glenn says he moved on to teaching because, I have a strong interest in learning about the “world and have a passion for reading. I [wanted

igniting their passion for learning and developing strong and meaningful relationships with them so that they felt supported in that journey. My path to entering the teaching profession started in my senior years of High School. [But] I had wanted to first gain relevant experience in the corporate field… I feel this lived experience has helped my students with the provision of my practical first-hand examples.

When we found Glenn, he had been busy leading his school, as one of four ‘Early Adopter Schools’ in NSW, in the implementation of the new High Potential and Gifted Education Policy for the Department of Education. This type of work fits with Glenn’s belief in driving forward educational change for the benefit of students, ensuring that “all students are challenged and engaged to achieve their educational potential”.

Mr Prateek Kripal Maths Teacher and Stage 6 Boarding Coordinator Prateek comes to us as a role model for leadership and academic pursuit.

He is well-studied; holding two Bachelor degrees (Mathematics/ Theology and Teaching), a Master’s degree in Education, and a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership. Prior to taking up the position at St Greg’s, Prateek was the Mathematics Coordinator at Mount Carmel Catholic College, where he had a significant impact on the effective learning of his students and his staff. St Greg’s is fortunate to have someone with Prateek’s work and study experience teaching our students how to learn.

Prateek’s reason for teaching is pretty simple – he wants to make a difference in the lives of young people. To this end, he identifies his most important teaching experiences as revolving around “building genuine relationships and supporting students as they achieve their goals.” He sees that his role is to support students to deal with whatever they bring in the moment, while also building foundations for successes in the future. We can see this approach is important in both the classroom, and in the boarding house.

Fitting in with Prateek’s simple philosophy, he is a man of few words, offering two short pieces of advice to young people:

Mr Christian Marchegiani Science Teacher Christian has a wealth of sporting and leadership experience, both in and out of teaching, which we knew would serve our young men well when we brought him on as a Science teacher. His background in Exercise and Sports Science enables Christian to engage with students beyond the classroom, and helps him build positive relationships and serve as a role model for a healthy life.

Christian is one of those people who responds to challenges headon, and with positivity. He really should be writing motivational posters as a side-hustle; he believes that “Purpose…is not something you find, but something you build”, and “Everyone can follow

but not everyone can lead. All teachers are leaders”. Christian has expressed that his favourite teaching experiences are really simple ones; receiving a ‘thank you’ from a boy as he exits a lesson, or just seeing students learn the basic requirements of a good life: manners, respect and kindness.

Christian believes that central to the role of a teacher is…

“…understanding that not all students will be successful. Not all will be academic and not all will be athletic, but all have the ability to turn up and have a go; to show up with intent and purpose. Our job is not to tell students what to think, who to be or how to behave. Our role is to inspire them to just be authentic and be the best version of themselves.

Mr Myron Papadopoulos Science Teacher Though we all consider ourselves interesting in some way or other, I think Myron’s educational and early career experiences take the cake. His accent alone hints of a South African upbringing, yet he is worldly beyond this. With undergraduate Science and Teaching qualifications from Sydney University, a Master of Science degree in Marine Biology from Stockholm University, and publication of his thesis titled “Local Ecological Knowledge on the Connectivity of the Tropical Seascape in Zanzibar”, Myron’s world-traveller status is a little more firmedup. Finally, prepare to feel jealous when you read that Myron also recently worked as a research assistant on the IDP Dolphin Project in Greece, analysing and observing

the behaviour and population numbers of dolphins in the Ambracian Gulf.

How lucky are we that Myron decided to become a teacher! His reason for becoming a teacher is to “make a difference”. He seeks to inspire our next generations to become environmentally conscious and thereby contribute to the betterment of society.

When asked what advice he would love our young people to heed, he replied, Socrates once said, “Wisdom begins in “wonder”.

Wonder is the enjoyment, curiosity, and excitement that one brings to life and to work or study. Without wonder, life becomes more difficult, and tasks become more challenging. So my advice would be find something you love and work towards it, even if in time your interests change. If you do what you love, then it will never feel like work even when things become difficult.

”

Ms Raquel Russo HSIE Teacher There could be no better start for a student than to know that his teacher is passionate about their subject, and our St Greg’s students get this with Raquel, who loves Geography and loves to talk about Geography! Her passion was recognised by the Department of Education when she was awarded the Executive Director’s Teaching Scholarship upon commencing her teaching studies. Throughout her career, Raquel has passed on her enthusiasm to countless students. In 2018, Raquel’s Geography students at Good Samaritan Catholic College won the First Place prize for the NSWGTA’s Geographical Fieldwork and Research Award, something which brings her immense pride.

Asked about her philosophy regarding the important role of the teacher, Raquel outlined, I believe that a teacher should be a role model for “students to look up to. This is so they can be seen as a source of guidance, knowledge, support, and encouragement for students, so that they grow as learners as well as unique individuals.

”

Whilst Raquel loves her subject, she also sees its potential as a window into understanding contemporary events and societies. She encourages students to be aware of issues in the world today, advising them to …showcase your talents to the school and wider “community; don’t be afraid to speak up, because there is always someone who will listen to you.

Don’t be afraid of change; embrace it and stay up to date with world events.

Farewell to Staff Mrs Daniela Romeo Daniela commenced her employment in April 2013 as the Professional Assistant to the Headmaster and then took on the dual roles of Professional Assistant and College Registrar from 2015 to 2016. During this period she dedicated her time to building the enrolments of the College and supporting boarding families and day boys. Daniela then returned to her role as Personal Assistant to the Headmaster until the end of 2017.

In 2018, Daniela started the exciting venture of building the culture of the Junior School Administration Team in her role as the Personal Assistant to the Head of Junior School. Throughout the ensuing years, Daniela has been a great asset to the College

as the Junior School has grown. Daniela’s attention to detail has ensured the efficiency in administration, communication and events are executed in the most professional manner possible. Her commitment and dedication to the College has not gone unnoticed and we applaud her for her tremendously efficient and consistent high standard of work.

Daniela is a kind natured, approachable and professional person, alongside being a wonderful colleague and friend to many.

A large part of Daniela’s role has been in her support of others, and we as a College community are certainly fortunate for having her presence in our community.

We wish Daniela God’s blessings for the next stage of her life and we sincerely thank her for the outstanding contributions she has made to St Gregory’s College over the last nine years.

Mrs Louise Millar Mrs Louise Millar leaves St Gregory’s College to take up the position of Director of Teaching and Learning at OLMC Parramatta.

Mrs Millar commenced her employment at St Gregory’s College in 2006, working as a Boarding Coordinator for two years before moving into the role of Literacy Support Teacher and Senior English Teacher from 2008 to 2013. From 2014 to 2016, Louise held the positions of Coordinator of Professional Learning and Teacher Development and Staff Mentoring Facilitator. In 2015 she also held the role of Assistant English Coordinator. In 2017, Louise was appointed to her current position of Director of Teaching and Learning.

Throughout all of this time and in all of these different roles, Louise has been a remarkably effective, committed and dedicated teacher, colleague and mentor to so many staff and students.

Louise is a remarkable educational leader.

She has been a wonderfully caring and compassionate colleague to all staff members, a dedicated and inspiring teacher and a commensurate professional in all of her dealings and interactions with staff, students

and families. Her passion for education and lifelong learning, her engaging and entertaining presentations to groups of staff, students and parents and her incredibly positive and enthusiastic approach to getting the best out of all situations will be among the many fond memories that will remain after Louise finishes her time at St Greg’s.

As a College, we sincerely thank Louise for the outstanding contribution, service and commitment that she has consistently displayed throughout her sixteen years at St Gregory’s College. We take this opportunity to extend our best wishes to Louise as she embarks on her new role and we wish Louise and her family God’s blessing for the future.

Ms Carmela Veron A long-standing member of the Support Staff at the College, concludes her employment on Friday 11 June to take up the position of Human Resources Manager at Sydney Grammar School.

Ms Carmela Veron has provided outstanding service to the College over the last seventeen years. In her time at St Gregory’s College, Carmela has held a range of roles. She commenced her employment in April 2004 as an Accounts Payable Officer and later that year, the role changed to Senior Accounts Officer. In October 2010, when Carmela returned from Maternity Leave part-time, she took on the roles of Senior Accounts Officer and Return to Work Coordinator.

In December 2013, Carmela was appointed to the position of PA to the Deputy Headmaster / Senior Accounts Officer / Return to Work Coordinator.

After completing further studies

and upgrading her qualifications, Carmela commenced in her most recent position of PA to the Head of Senior School / Payroll Officer / Human Resources Coordinator.

In listing the different roles held by Carmela, highlight needs to be made of her incredible work ethic, her passion for the College and her unwavering commitment to do her absolute best at all times. It would be practically impossible and also immeasurable to identify the countless members of the College community who have benefited greatly from the support and assistance provided to them

Carmela has certainly given great service to St Gregory’s College.

Mr David Clarke After a very significant and dedicated career at St Gregory’s College, Mr David Clarke concluded his employment on Friday 4 June to take up a position at Trinity Lutheran College, Molendinar on the Gold Coast.

Mr Clarke commenced his employment at St Gregory’s College in 2002 as a Science teacher and he was then appointed to the role of Science Coordinator in 2005, a position that he has held substantively since that time. In 2017 David was appointed to the position of Acting Director of Administration and he remained in this role up until the end of 2019 after which he returned to his role as Leader of Learning - Science. David has also worked in the Boarding community for several years in his time at the College.

Throughout his teaching career at St Greg’s David has taught Science across Stages 4, 5 and 6 with his specialty being Chemistry. David is to be acknowledged for his commitment, drive and energy as an educator who is able to motivate and engage students. He has been a fantastic teacher, inspiring students to develop a passion and love of learning. Over the years he has attained considerable success as a teacher, including achieving some excellent results with numerous HSC classes.

David has also been a big supporter and heavily involved in a wide range of activities beyond the classroom, including camps and retreats as well as having a long involvement in the College’s co-curricular program, including coaching sporting teams. He coached the First XI Football team for three seasons and celebrated winning the premiership on one occasion. He also coached Year 10 and then B grade soccer continuously since 2008, including five more MCS premierships. Aside from his involvement in sport, David has participated in many camps and retreats over the years, including the seven-day Murrumbidgee Paddle. In addition, he accompanied students on the Vietnam Study Tour in 2019 and has been involved in supporting students in a range of other ways beyond the classroom.

David is a wonderful faith-filled person, devoted to his calling as an educator and family man. He has always given extremely generously of his time and he has been an exceptionally committed and dedicated member of staff in this community for almost twenty years. We sincerely thank him for his magnificent service to the College community of St Gregory’s College.

We offer our congratulations and best wishes to David for a successful transition to the new school and the move interstate with his family.

Nada Simich In February this year, Nada finished her tenure at St Gregory’s to commence her retirement, having faithfully and diligently served the College community for twenty three years.

Nada commenced her employment at St Gregory’s College in August 1998, initially working in the Library, both as a volunteer and paid employee, and progressively increasing her workload in subsequent years. In 2000, she was appointed as a permanent fulltime member of staff and since that time Nada has worked across the Library, Print room, Clothing Pool and Book Hire.

Nada’s work in the Library and with Book Hire has been a labour of love for her. These are places where her own love of reading has supported the work of many different teachers and students over the years. It would not be surprising if we found out that Nada had read just about every one of the books in the Book Room! Her work has been detailed and thorough, and teachers have been able to rely on Nada to ensure that our students are well-resourced.

Throughout her long tenure at the College, Nada has proved to be flexible and multiskilled as she has moved about the College into different roles and different locations over the years. From manning the library-to-classroom VHS tape system, to working with the Print Room machinery, Nada has seen much change at the College, and has adapted along with it.

We keep Nada in our thoughts and prayers and we offer her our very best wishes and God’s blessings as she commences her retirement.

Karen Kissick (nee Vardy) Karen also left St Gregory’s to commence her retirement, which will include relocating to Goulburn to build a new house overlooking the Wollondilly River and surrounding hills. Karen is very excited about her new plans, but has indicated she will greatly miss working at St Greg’s.

Karen commenced her employment with the College on 27 April 2001 in her current role operating and managing the Print Room.

Through her 20 years of dedicated service, Karen has quietly supported the College community from the buzzing space of the Print Room. From there, she has been responsible for the print production of student resources, teaching documentation and College publications. Her attention to detail has ensured that our work leaves her space in the most professional condition possible.

During some of the most important times in the College’s recent history, Karen has worked tirelessly to look after others; producing funeral booklets until late into the evening, or staying back to ensure important information can be published for sharing.

Although we can laud Karen for her tremendously efficient and consistently high quality work, we must also acknowledge the very good person that Karen is, being a wonderful colleague and friend. Even through her own difficult times, Karen has been a great support to others and we as a College community are certainly the luckier for her presence in our community.

We wish Karen God’s blessings for the next stage of her life and we sincerely thank her for the outstanding contributions she has made to St Gregory’s College over the last two decades.

Karen has steered a straight course in the print room, having produced exacting printing guidelines for quality control, and having been a key person in the development of a College Style Guide. She has taught many a teacher how to tidy up their messy documents and rejuvenate old resources. It has not been

Mrs Deborah Monte Deb and Darren Monte are very pleased to announce the birth of Reggie William Monte who was born on Tuesday, 2 February at 3:45am, weighing 3.6kg. Deb and Reggie are doing very well and all of the family are very excited about the new addition to their family.

Congratulations to Deb and Darren on this fantastic news!! Reggie is now the fourth boy in the Monte family, joining older brothers Harvey, Fletcher and Mac.

The College Foundation was formed in 1983 with the purpose of establishing a fund to assist the College in the development and improvement of facilities to enable the best possible physical and educational environment for the education of all students.

C

ontributions to the Building Fund of by parents over the many years have contributed to the excellent facilities that the students now enjoy at the College. In these very difficult times, the Foundation has gratefully received every dollar from contributions made by parents with the clear knowledge and deep appreciation that the contribution was an important choice in a year with so many competing financial demands.

The College Foundation is managed by a Board of Directors consisting of a team of professional people from the St. Gregory’s Community. The Board supports the College Strategic Plan and the scholarship programs to ensure that contributions made by parents are used for the maximum benefit and assistance to the College.

In addition to the Building Fund, the Foundation also conducts a number of functions during the year which include the Welcome Cocktail Evening for new parents and the, We’re Halfway There cocktail evening for parents of Year 10 students. Our major fundraising event each year is the Celebrity Sports Dinner. Whilst we were not able to host our 26th Celebrity Sports Dinner last year, plans are now well under way for the dinner this year to be held at the College on Friday 12 November.

Not only were Foundation events unable to be held over the last year because of COVID-19, our Old Boys Community has also been prevented from holding a number of fund-raising events. However, despite this, the Old Boys have continued to make valuable contributions to the Foundation.

Despite the current difficulties, the College Foundation remains committed to continuing to provide ongoing assistance to the College to provide the best possible facilities for students and we are most grateful for the continuing support of the College Community.

From the President Old Boys Union Mr Stephen Bullock

Dear Old Boys, I write to you whilst in the midst of the seemingly never ending COVID pandemic, which has unfortunately played havoc with our Old Boy events planned for 2021. My wish for the next issue of Hearts & Minds, is to be reporting on many more successfully held events in the second half of the year.

The first half of 2021 has flown past, and whilst we have needed to postpone our planned reunions for the year groups of 1970, 1971, 1980, 1981, 1990, 1991 which was due to be held on Friday 25 June, and 2000, 2001, 2010, 2011 which was scheduled for Saturday 26 of June, we were lucky enough to be able to host our Vintage Old Boys Luncheon earlier in the week before the NSW Government announced a further tightening on restrictions.

The Vintage Luncheon is held each year as an open invitation to all Old Boys who completed their studies over 50 years ago, and this year we were joined by a number of regular faces, along with some new faces to catch up, reminisce and enjoy a beautiful lunch at the College. After a Liturgy held in the College Chapel shared with the Year 8 cohort, stories were shared over lunch which ended with a tribute to Br Luke which was also shown at his funeral, most attendees knew Br Luke well and he is sorely missed by all who met him.

The College was also lucky to have Old Boy Sergei Sergienko (Class of 2000) who spoke to the Years 11 and 12 cohorts at the College recently. Sergei is an Australian entrepreneur, CEO and leading expert on the blockchain and recruitment industries. He is also the founder and CEO of Chrono.tech, a global blockchain

startup headquartered in Sydney. And, co-founder and Director of Edway Group, one of Australia’s biggest recruitment companies. His important and timely messages of self-belief and the need to stay dedicated and committed to achieving goals were very well received. Thanks again, Sergei and we hope to see you again soon.

Our next planned event for 2021 will be the Old Boy’s Trots evening held at Menangle Raceway, for those interested in organising a table (COVID restrictions pending) please contact Mary Stepien at the College at mary.stepien@stgregs.nsw.edu.au or phone 02 4629 4132. Following this is the annual Marshall Rogers Golf Day to be held at Camden Lakeside. The day is held each year to raise funds to support a student in need at the College, this will be held on Thursday 18 November, so if you feel like a fun day of golf and catching up with some old friends for a wonderful cause, please also contact Mary Stepien for information.

There are also sponsorship opportunities available for this event.

The Committee will meet shortly to discuss the possible new dates for the cancelled reunions, so please look out for some communication with regard to these and we hope to see those Old Boys up at the College again very shortly.

Finally, we are always looking for stories to celebrate the success of our Old Boys, so if you know of, are, or able to direct us to someone in the community who has done, or is doing great things, please get in touch!

Vintage Luncheon Ms Melissa Watts - Communication & Community Engagement Coordinator

It is always a special day when we welcome back our Old Boys from the 1940’s to 1970’s, and yesterday we did just that.

H

aving missed the Old Boys Vintage Luncheon last year due to COVID, many a story was shared between friends. For some, this is the only opportunity they have to catch up with old schoolmates and share stories of the past.

46th wedding anniversary on Sunday 27 June, and they were married in the College Chapel – The Chapel of Annunciation! So, it was an extra-special morning for them both reminiscing about their special day all those years ago.

Thank you to Peter Longhurst (Class of 1967) for sharing his stories with our Year 8 cohort and other guests during the Liturgy. His stories of ‘never giving up’, were inspiring. We had Old Boys; Gary Beard (Class of 1973) and Michael Moroney (Class of 1971) attend their very first Vintage Luncheon and also our regular attendees. Tony Tesoriero (Class of 1964), who is 74 this year, cycled all the way from Epping and say’s, “this is a day he would never miss, rain hail or shine”.

To add to this, we also learnt that Stephen’s mother, Pat Benoit, was the St Greg’s College Librarian for 15 years!

Thomas Andersen (Year 10) a current Boarder from Yass, shared what his day as a Boarder looks like and why he cherishes his time at St Greg’s. The story he shared was heart-felt and resonated with the Old Boys in the room. However, there were some shocked guests when he mentioned that his day doesn’t begin with milking cows! His message to the Old Boys was one of change and how he can only imagine how the College has changed over all these years for those who were in the room.

However, the one thing they all have in common, was what St Greg’s has given them; mateship, a

love of learning and a lifelong bond to St Greg’s and its community.

We look forward to hosting our Vintage Old Boys again next year.

Grateful for Greg’s Old Boys’ stories Chad Henney - Class of 2007

A

fter graduating in 2007, I completed a Bachelor of Arts in Media and Communications at the University of New South Wales.

I now work as a television producer currently at Network Ten. Throughout my High School years and beyond, St Gregory’s taught me the value of working hard to achieve your goals - Quae Seminaveris Metes - and this has certainly helped me excel in my life and career.

My favourite part of my work is telling human stories and I have been given the opportunity to do this travelling around the world. St Greg’s always promoted its students to be active and responsible members of society and throughout my career, I have been able to give a voice to people, and their stories, who are often not heard. One of the proudest projects I have worked on was when I partnered

with an Australian charity, Midwife Vision, and filmed the work they do in cooperation with Tanzanian midwives, doctors and mothers in a public hospital in Dar es Salaam. We are aiming to enter the currently untitled film to film festivals later in the year.

I look forward to what the future holds and producing more human-centred stories.

Later in the year, I am excited to be getting married to my partner Joel. Almost 15 years after graduating I am thankful for my experience at St Greg’s that has allowed me to reach my potential in all aspects of life.

Jared Dawson - Class of 2001

M

y name is Jared Dawson one of four Dawson ‘old boys’ (originally) from Bradbury.

Our family were day boys and were represented at the College as a family from 1987 through to 2002. I attended the school from 1996 - 2001. I was selected based on my academic performance into a selective school at Hurlstone, but I accepted the position at St Gregory’s. I was fortunate enough to be granted an English scholarship which covered my tuition fees through to the end of Year 10.

What I loved about the scholarship and the College more broadly, was I was forced out of my comfort zone into public speaking and debating. Mr Peter Baz (Debating and Public Speak leader at the time) did a magnificent job of bringing this into the College against a reasonably masculine background of rugby league and other athletic/sporting pursuits.

He deserves a lot of praise for his persistence and hard work in this area.

One of the great things about St Greg’s was the melting pot aspect. Lots of different young men from a variety of different backgrounds (city/country, day boys/boarders, sporting/nonsporting, European/other ancestries etc). were all challenged to bring the best out of ourselves, and this was a strong point of the College. It was an environment free of distraction and full of small groups of boys interacting/comingling with a strong, shared common interest in bettering themselves. There were multiple areas to try out such as music, sportis, academia, public speaking and more.

I studied hard at school and achieved 94.40 in my HSC. Since I finished at the end of 2001, I completed a double degree in Law and Business (Marketing) at Western Sydney University. I married Natalie Novak in 2009 and we now have three children Marisa (born 2011), Markus (born 2013) and Matias (born 2020). In the intervening years since I left the College, I have built a successful career in business-to-business marketing roles working for some of the world’s biggest industrial companies such as Italy’s CNH Industrial and the USA’s Genuine Parts Company. I have been very fortunate to travel around the world for work including to Russia, China, Japan, Italy, and Turkey.

Outside of my corporate career, I have assisted my wife to build her copywriting business Elite Words (www.elitewords.com.au) since 2017 and as of July 2021, I have launched another business and I have left my full-time corporate job to go it alone. My company is called Brainiact (www.brainiact.com.au) and my vision is a world where everybody has access to great ideas.

Brainiact offers affordable growth, marketing, and strategy advice to mid-sized business owners across Australia. In total we now have six staff working for our family businesses and we are rapidly growing. My passion has always been to help others and I am now able to do this with Brainiact. I am proud to say we already have several Old Boys as customers, too! A big shout out to Nathan Hanna (Hanna Bros) and Anthony

Sergei Sergienko - Class of 2000

W

here do I start? St Gregory’s was more than just a school for me. It was my microsociety, a place where I felt at home and where I belonged. When I came to the College, I was put in a year below the year I was supposed to be in because there were no places in the correct year and because my English was not up to the expected level. I was moved up to the correct year, a month later because of my academic achievement in other subjects, including Maths.

This little hiccup has taught me one of the most valuable lessons in my life and that lesson that is still current. If there is no direct way to achieve what you need, then there is most certainly an indirect one, you just need to find it.

I came to Australia at the age of 14 and by 15 I was enrolled into St Greg’s. At the time, the name and the status of the College seemed on par with Oxford as far as I was concerned. It was my “gold medal” just to be at the College, proudly wearing that maroon blazer. Over my school years, the best friends I had were all from school. We were a team, we were a bunch of guys that in my eyes, everyone else aspired to be. The sense of community at the College was epic, especially for a first-generation immigrant like me. I remember my school years fondly and in my darkest moments, I refer to those happy memories to help me through.

Since leaving school, I completed a B Comm Degree at UNSW, and I have gone on to start numerous businesses, some of which have failed, but the ones that haven’t have done well. I have starred in a reality show in Russia, became famous there and have been featured in Forbes magazine and alike in many countries. I am recognised as a world expert in the fields that I work in and recently, I have climbed to the top of Australian business, where I now call icons of Australian business my friends and partners. I have a wife, Elena and two children, a girl and a boy, and I am proud to say that I have been married for 17 years.

Some say that I have done alright after leaving school.

I can honestly say that in part, I have achieved and keep achieving all that I have because of my teen years at St Greg’s. The boys on the rugby field at the time, have shown me to always strive for perfection and to always be number one. The guys on the debating team have taught me how to

speak well. The guys at soccer and other sports have shown me the importance of respect to your opposition and the list goes on. I am forever grateful to the teachers and in particular Brother Richard Benett, for teaching me and giving me the academic base that I have built upon since school.

St Greg’s is unique in its culture and history and I am thrilled to be offered an opportunity to tell my story and wish everyone who has any association with the College, great happiness, prosperity and luck.

Throughout the first semester of 2021, the College has managed to host a reasonably full calendar of events and activities. We have certainly been very busy and hopefully (COVID permitting) will continue to be heading into Semester 2.

Thank you to the staff, Old Boys and community members who have contributed to this first edition of Hearts & Minds, which is full of stories we think reflect the breadth of the opportunities at the College and our wonderful community spirit.

As Mr MacMaster states in his welcome; “We have chosen to name this publication, ‘Hearts & Minds’ because that name captures the very essence of our community at St Gregory’s College. Each day, staff, students and parents all work together to shape the talented young people in our care.” This publication was born out of a need to share our stories with not just the current College community, but the wider community; our former students, past parents and future parents. We say it often, St Gregory’s College is a family, so from our family to yours, we present the first issue of Hearts & Minds.
