From the President The new year is the perfect time to reflect on the past and look forward to what lies ahead for 2019. As I take stock of how the first semester at St. Xavier went, I am energized by the many blessings and opportunities I witness each week. Of course, our greatest blessings are the young men in the building. This opportunity, this responsibility, to help these young men find and develop their talents intellectually, spiritually, socially, morally and physically are why faculty, staff, alumni and friends of St. Xavier work tirelessly for continuous improvement in effectiveness and efficiency. We do this to create the best environment for our students. This is quite an amazing place full of inspiring people and programs.
This opportunity, this responsibility, to help these young men find and develop their talents intellectually, spiritually, socially, morally and physically are why faculty, staff, alumni and friends of St. Xavier work tirelessly for continuous improvement in effectiveness and efficiency. One of the most exciting things about being in education, and especially at a school like St. Xavier, is the endless opportunities and blessings that are constantly evolving. In many ways, this is the same St. Xavier I experienced in the 1970s: Academic rigor, interscholastic athletic and cocurricular excellence, impactful service and brotherhood. But, it is obvious it is NOT the seventies!
Tim Reilly ’76
Many in our own community may be surprised to learn that more than 600 of our nearly 1500 students receive tuition assistance and 119 of our current students can qualify for free and reduced lunch prices. We serve nearly 20 students with individual education plans (IEPs) and 180 students with learning accommodations. Our student body is 18 percent multiculturally diverse. All of this broadened diversity deeply enriches the St. Xavier experience for everyone. It is no surprise to me that it also coincides with our students collecting more than 70,000 pounds of food, raising more than $119,000 through the Walk for X and producing the highest test scores in school history. In this edition of St. Xavier Magazine you will meet some faculty, students, staff and alumni who invest their talent, passion and resources to make sure that St. X is not coasting. I like to say that you can only coast downhill, and downhill is not an option when we are dealing with young men and their futures. As we invite the Class of 2023 to join the Long Blue Line, we know we need to share with them all of these great blessings and opportunities to maintain the excellence that is our storied tradition. Your support makes that happen. Thank you for your continued prayers, financial support and volunteering that makes all of these amazing things happen.
My Best,

Heart to Home Canned Food Drive Helps Many 2
St. Xavier High School Magazine Winter 2019
We celebrated another great canned food drive this year with freshman and sophomore homerooms bringing in over 70,000 pounds of food that was donated to 30 food banks. Junior and senior homerooms participated in our Heart to Home program where they provided food for 354 local families. Alumni and friends of St. Xavier also participated in Heart to Home by providing for 187 families. A special thank you to the Mothers’ Club who donated Kroger gift cards to give to Heart to Home families. Along with this year’s Canned Food Drive our Community Service Department educated students on the issue of food insecurity and hunger in our city by holding school-wide activities that helped students understand why it’s so important to go door to door and collect food.
Men for Others and the Environment Recently several new water stations have been installed around the building, replacing many of the outdated and inadequate ceramic fountains. These units help students hydrate, and they support our current school-wide OCSAA (Ohio Catholic Schools Accrediting Association) religious goal to be good stewards of our environment. With that, we are encouraging each student to bring to school a durable water container to fill at these water stations to help reduce plastic waste.

Vice President’s Message Tony Schad ’81
I heard my son say something recently that made me smile and think. Please let me give you the backstory first. You see, I am an avid Notre Dame fan. I was introduced to Notre Dame football by fellow St. X classmate and longtime friend Mike Moellering and his father, Tom. We went to a night game in Notre Dame Stadium in September of 1988 as the Irish played Michigan (a 19-17 Irish win on the way to the National Championship) and I have cheered for the Irish ever since. My son, Andrew, is a St. X alumnus, class of 2013, and an officer in the United States Army. He graduated from St. Louis University. He was home for Thanksgiving and we were reveling in the fact that Notre Dame football was having such a fantastic season. (Please note that I am writing this prior to the bowl season!) Andrew mentioned that his girlfriend had asked him why he was such a big Notre Dame fan since he had no connection to the school. His answer made me pause, smile and think. He said he told her, “Because my dad loves Notre Dame.” A First Lieutenant and Army Ranger saying he has been a lifelong fan of something because he watched his dad. How cool is that? The same is true of passion for St. Xavier High School. Our kids and our students watch us. They see how we act. They see what we do. They see what we love. It sinks in. We set examples, both good and bad, that make a difference in the lives of the young people around us. Recently, when one of our students was writing a thank-you letter to a St. X benefactor, the student approached St. 10

X Gift Officer Ed Franchi and wanted to learn more about the donor to whom he was writing. He was looking forward to possibly meeting the donor to say thank you in person. As supporters of the mission of St. Xavier High School, we are all setting an example for our own children and for our students. And they are watching us. It is one of the

Our students see how people they never met support St. X and make an education here possible for generations of Bombers to come. I think it is one of the reasons that giving has been so continuous and strong here at St. Xavier. Our alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty, staff and friends set an example of giving back each and every year. They set a wonderful example of supporting our mission of educating and providing personal formation that continues for our students’ entire lives. So if you ever wonder if your continued giving to St. Xavier makes a difference, I can assure you that it does. What happens here with our students is incredible and it happens because of your support. So thank you for your gifts each year. Like my son, our students are watching us. I am confident that down the road they will join us by supporting their alma mater because what happens here each and every day cannot be replaced. And by the way, my son was a fan of St. Xavier before he ever walked our halls because he watched his dad. However, he loves St. X because he lived and experienced what it is all about. That is pretty cool too!
Class of 1971
Gives A Gift of Service to St. Xavier
The Long Blue Line gives back in a variety of ways. Many classes make class gifts to help support their fellow brothers. The Class of 1971 continues to pay it forward to the next generation of Bombers in a unique way. Several years ago, the Class of 1971 became the first class in St. Xavier history to establish a special fund to benefit St. Xavier students going on Summer Mission Trips. To date, classmates have contributed more than $90,000 to help those students who cannot afford the full cost of a trip. Gifts continue to come in as the class works to reach the ultimate goal of $100,000. Students benefitting from this class gift have the opportunity to broaden their understanding of cultural differences. Servant leadership is embedded in these trips as evidenced by letter from student Gavin Vargas ’19.
If your class is interested in making a gift to better the future of the your fellow brothers in the Long Blue Line, please contact Tony Schad, Vice President of Advancement at 513.618.3228 or tschad@stxavier.org
Dear Class of 1971, I had the amazing opportunity to go to Los Angeles for my mission trip and it was honestly life changing. I have always been a person who loved to help others who are in need, so when I first heard about the chance to go on a mission trip, I was all for it. I naturally gravitated to the L.A. trip after I heard what we would be doing there. It was a trip that would focus on working with the homeless in soup kitchens, shelters and other social agencies. I have multiple family members who have been homeless for a while so I thought it would be a great experience for me to try and help the homeless in L.A. However, there was a minor setback due to the cost of the mission trip. It was too much for my family to afford but with the generous help of donors and St. X, I was able to go. When I arrived, it was nothing that I expected. Little did I know that we were going to be helping in the homeless capital of the entire United States, Skid Row. Skid Row was shocking for many reasons. We saw miles and miles of tents set up on the streets, people stripping in public, drug deals and even the use of drugs. As we went to soup kitchens, it was very eye opening to find out that many of these people just needed someone to talk to them. I was fortunate enough to sit down and talk with some of the homeless. I found myself engaged in so many different conversations with them and they expressed their gratitude to us for helping make their meal for the day. This experience helped me realize how lucky of a person I truly am. I have so much in my life to be thankful for, like clean clothes, fresh food, a home and even a family that loves me. I would highly encourage every underclassmen to participate in a mission trip because not only will it open their eyes to a new side of the world, but also will broaden their perspectives on global issues. Thank you again for this opportunity. Sincerely, Gavin Vargas ’19

Career ConneXions
Summer interns impress sponsor Mike Prus ’93 Mike Prus, class of 1993, wanted to re-engage with his alma mater and give back to St. Xavier, so he became one of the first people to sponsor interns last summer. Mike, vice president of Prus Construction, stepped up and took three St. X students under his wings as part of the Career ConneXions program. It was a rewarding experience for both the boys and the company. Prus Construction is a family-owned and family-run company in Cincinnati, founded in 1887. It’s run by Mike, his father and his uncle. It’s focused on infrastructure – “We’re known for curbs, pavement and sidewalks,” he said. “We focus mainly on concrete work, but we’re pushing beyond that with site preparation and underground work.” His company had key roles in the building of the Cincinnati streetcar system, Smale Park, and the renovation of the Museum Center at Union Terminal. “We want to experience the excitement of building our community,” he said. In addition to the three St. X students, Prus Construction employed an intern from Loveland High School. The company had no previous experience with high school interns, so taking them on board was a risk – a risk that paid off.
Mike wanted to give teens the opportunity to see what working for a company entailed, an experience that provides insight and guidance for their future academic and career choices, and a competitive edge at a time when colleges and employers are increasingly looking for real-world experience in their applicants. Mike took an indirect path to his career, which he implied he hoped an internship could help others avoid. After graduating from St. X, he went to the University of Tennessee to study business, but he saw that it wasn’t for him. He returned to his home town and studied construction management at the Ohio College of Applied Science, part of the University of Cincinnati. He joined his family firm, later earning his MBA at UC. At some companies and organizations, interns might spend their time acting as vacation relief or doing clerical tasks. Not so at Prus Construction. “We were in a position where we could give them something to do.” The interns worked with professional staff and were assigned hands-on responsibilities. Mike admits they had to do some menial tasks, like shredding documents, “but they saw that the full-time staff had to shred papers, too. They saw that everyone does everything.” “We tried hard to get the boys to understand why they were doing what we assigned,” he said. “Once we did, they picked it up fast.” Mike was very impressed with last summer’s interns. “I can’t say enough about them – their level of engagement, how quickly they learned, the questions they asked.” In addition to real-life tasks, Mike said, it’s important for young men to learn some of the unwritten protocols of the working world, even if it’s the hard way. Early

St. Xavier High School Magazine Winter 2019
in the summer, for example, an intern parked his car in the president’s spot. It happened only once, but the lesson likely won’t be forgotten. Mike learned something, too, from working with the teens. He wanted to make training videos, but didn’t want to go full-bore at first. He hired a St. X Mike Prus ’93 student and they created a video about decorative concrete, all shot on an iPhone. Mike gained knowledge about video; the boy learned about corporate training. Mike shows his commitment to Career ConneXions not only by sponsoring internships; he also sits on the program’s steering committee as its internship program leader. He has some advice for anyone eager to sponsor an intern: “Understand that someone in the organization has to spend time with the interns. There has to be a high level of engagement.” Career ConneXions has tagged growing the number of internships as its highest priority this year. As of this writing, about 110 students have expressed interest. The goal is to offer 30 or more positions, more than twice last year’s number.
If you, too, or someone you know would like to reengage with or give back to St. X and help young men envision their future, please think about sponsoring an internship this summer. For more information, visit Career ConneXions on the Web at www.stxavier. org/careerconnexions or contact Christine Dauenhauer (program director) at stxcareerconnexions@gmail.com
A Man for Others: T Courtney Roberts, MD ’80
Please enjoy this conversation with esteemed alumnus, Dr. T. Courtney Roberts. He describes how being a Man for Others transcends time and place. Dr. Courtney Roberts ’80 joined Crossroad Health Center in Over-the-Rhine as a volunteer in 1995, and was one of Crossroad’s f irst medical providers. He graduated from Ohio State University College of Medicine, and completed his residency in family medicine at the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Roberts was drawn to Crossroad’s faith-based mission, and appreciates its dedicated, caring staff. He feels it is the ideal setting to provide health care to those most in need. His particular interests include pediatrics and diabetes care. In his spare time, he enjoys working out, cooking, reading and playing the guitar. Dr. Roberts took some time to reflect on his time at St. Xavier and share advice for current students.
You have been described as a ‘Man for Others’. How has this St. Xavier and Jesuit teaching shaped your personal and professional life? First, it has helped me feel connected to the St. Xavier community. I remember being in college 900 miles away, and coming across a St. X alum on campus (there were 4-5 Bombers in each class there) and either thinking to myself or saying to them as we conversed, “men for others.” Seeing my fellow classmates involved in community service while at St X, watching my brothers (Matt ’79, Mike ’82, and Jim ’83) be loving husbands and fathers while having careers that serve others, and seeing my friends from St X be givers to those around them has helped me see the motto lived out. That motto planted a seed that was watered in my classes in college about people living in poverty, then fertilized in med school and residency when I saw people were sick and didn’t have a lot of material things. It continues to inspire me to be the best brother, uncle, friend, and doctor I can be.
From your days at St. Xavier, was there any particular teacher, coach or staff member who was instrumental in your education? My first coaches in swimming, Mike Arata ’65 and Tom Keefe ’68, were wonderful role models before we started at St X and still are today. They taught us about being a team first, aiming for your best, and having fun while doing it. Fr. Pigott was a wise and kind guidance counselor for me in school. His listening ear and gentle advice helped me begin to believe that Jesus was real and was continually asking me to “abide” in Him.
How would you describe the St. Xavier Advantage? It is a privilege to go to St. Xavier. It has a strong reputation not just in this city but beyond. And that provides a definite advantage in life. It provides a tremendous opportunity to get the best out of yourself academically, athletically, and spiritually. But the ultimate Advantage, in my opinion, is that everything is done as a community, both new and old, in the light of faith seeking to be of service to others and to give glory to God. Is there any advice you would give current students? Appreciate your time at St. Xavier. There’s a good chance friends now will most likely be your friends for life. You will always be a St. Xavier man. Strive to live up to that. Remember your namesake, St. Francis Xavier, and the life he led. Courageous. Generous. A man for others.

Alumni Reflections Going about their everyday work, faculty and staff may underestimate the transformative power of their words and example. In this new feature, we will highlight a few of the alumni who have had positive pivotal experiences with faculty or staff. We asked a few St. Xavier graduates to reflect on their time at St. Xavier and identify faculty and staff who made a memorable impact on their lives. One may never know the impact they s/he has had on students. Let this feature inspire you to be your very best in case a student is able to learn from that example to become more…
Steve Hils ’71 (Coach Sam Ionna) The person who had the most positive effect on my St X career was Junior Varsity Head Basketball Coach Sam Ionna ’64. He took over a team that only won three games as freshmen. But in our sophomore year we rebounded and won the GCL title. Coach Ionna instilled confidence and spirit in our approach to the season. He did not tolerate lack of effort on any day of practice or on game day. He was a fierce competitor and our young team responded to that approach. I have enjoyed seeing him over the years as he became a Head Coach at Aiken High School. The St. Xavier Advantage is a two-edged instrument. On one side is the feeling that everything good will come our way because of the St. X diploma. That is very narrow perspective as no one holds the door open for you or asks for your autograph because you graduated from St. X. The fuller view calls us to walk the path of life with each other and to share the load regardless of school pedigree. To become Men for Others is really the advantage we seek. We must remain open to the call of Magis that invitation to lead a life filled with “more“ service and love to each other. Oscar Romero, the slain Archbishop of El Salvador says it best: “We aspire not to have “more” but to be “more.” I served nine years on St X Board of Trustees, holding the position of Board Chairman in 2005 and 2006. I am currently President of the Kneflin, Dillhoff, Hils & Kruse Insurance Agency in Cincinnati. Coach Ionna

Tim Mooney ’65 (Fr. Joe Walsh, SJ) Definitely Fr. Walsh, my sophomore Latin teacher. As a result of Fr. Walsh’s intervention, my educational path was on a completely different trajectory for which I have always been very thankful. Following my sophomore year, I had a choice as to which language course (Latin, French or Spanish) I would take for my junior and senior years. Having survived two grueling years of Latin, I opted for French with the idea that it would free up some time for me to focus on expanding my horizons, otherwise known as my social life. I was all set until one day during the summer preceding my junior year Fr. Walsh called my parents and informed them that there was no way I was going to take French, but that I would be taking Latin for all four years. As if that wasn’t bad enough, when I arrived for the first day of school I found out that I was in the second highest academic class. I knew all the guys in the class and immediately realized that I was way out of my league. My budding social life quickly became nearly non-existent as I was confronted with an avalanche of schoolwork which consumed almost all of my previously planned free time. It eventually led to having Mr. Emmett as my senior year Latin teacher. As I have told him on many occasions, he was the best teacher I had throughout my four years at St. X. Obviously, Fr. Walsh was right and I am so grateful that he took the time and interest to see that I received the most beneficial education I could from St. X. Regardless of how you describe it, “You’re jugged” was always very impactful. I must add that I was jugged only one time in my four years and was able to talk my way out of it thanks to a very understanding Fr. McKenna. Mr. Parmantie thought that wearing the same tie every day for four years was a sufficient reason to jug me (yes, it was a little grimy), but I stood my ground. Fortunately, Fr. McKenna agreed with me and he excused me from the jug.

Being a member of the Long Blue Line has more advantages than I can enumerate. The educational, spiritual and personal growth that I experienced while at St. X has been a guiding influence throughout my life and I continue to benefit from it to this very day.
Student Spotlight Cameron Frueh ’19
Senior Cameron Frueh knew early on that St. X would be the place he wanted to attend to become the person he was meant to be in the world. He has embraced every opportunity to become just that person. Cameron is a Student Development Chairman, runs Cross Country and is part of the Steering Committee for Career ConneXions as well as serving on its Mentorship Program. He is a Peer Tutor, a Navigator Junior Homeroom Leader and Co-Founder of the Art of Manliness Club. Cameron is heavily involved in community service working with Cincinnati Parks Saturday Morning Service, Big Brothers, Night for the Fight Student Leadership Team, Matthew 25 Ministries, Habitat for Humanity, People Working Cooperatively as well as being a Student Advocate for Social Justice at IFTJ and a member of Social Justice Club. He is also a member of the Fair Trade Club and the National Honor Society. Cameron also is a gifted artist and created one of the official St. Xavier Christmas cards this year.
Why did you choose to attend St. X? Do you have any relatives that are members of the Long Blue Line? Before coming to St. X, I had no relatives as part of the Long Blue Line. A handful of family-friends recommended the school to my parents, but they ultimately gave me the freedom to make the decision. I shadowed three or four schools as an eighth grader and felt that only two gave me a sense of belonging. Oddly enough, these two were Moeller and St. X. I considered the benefits of each, visited them again, and consulted my friends and family. I reflected on who I was, what I wanted to be, and which school I thought could help me best become that person. Looking back now, it was a much simpler decision than I made it out to be. Those around me who had gone through or been impacted by St. X were and are the people I want to be. I chose St. X because I could feel comfortable with who I am and be challenged to become the person that I want to be. You are involved in a variety of activities at St. X. What have you learned through all of your experiences? Throughout all of my experiences and activities, the element of community has been present time and time again. Whether it is during a cross country meet in which every member of the 100+ person team cheers on the last runner, during a Big Brothers event at Winton Woods, or in simply organizing the next Career ConneXions event with parents and alumni, a community is ever-present. The bonds between the Long Blue Line, faculty, students, and parents is indescribable. No matter the differences 16
St. Xavier High School Magazine Winter 2019
between people, St. X has impacted the lives and characters of each. This can be taken one step further and applied to every person. The realization of community between all people is often overlooked, yet pivotal in the growth and appreciation of others.
What are your plans for the future? Next year I intend on studying Environmental Architecture at the Knowlton School of Architecture at The Ohio State University. With a degree and license as an architect, I would like to better integrate environmentalism into architecture and help combat climate change with architectural sustainability. What words of wisdom do you have for future members of the Long Blue Line? The best advice that I could give to coming members of the Long Blue Line is to get involved. I acknowledge that this advice may appear as a cliché, but it is one of the greatest realizations in my time at St. X. Before junior year, for instance, I had only joined a few extracurriculars. I realized this lack of involvement and looked for as many opportunities to get involved as possible. I started new clubs, joined existing ones, and worked to develop myself and the extracurriculars, which I became part of. In these last two years, I have been able to contribute to the making of a better place for future members of the Long Blue Line. Describe what the St. Xavier Advantage means to you. The St. Xavier Advantage is the opportunity for students to grow to be responsible men in a community of leaders. Every teacher, coach, parent, and member of the Long Blue Line demonstrates St. Xavier’s impact. Whether in the classroom, on the field, or at community service, every person involved at St. X works to mold future members of the Long Blue Line into strong and principled members of society. This is all encompassed in the collection of traits with which every student is believed to graduate— The Graduate at Graduation.
Faculty Focus Nancy Klas
Faculty member Nancy Klas exemplifies what it means to be Men and Women for Others, not only in the classroom but in life as well. Nancy is a 1988 graduate of McAuley High School. She earned a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Dayton in 1992 and a Masters in Secondary Education from Xavier while working at Procter & Gamble from 1992-1995. She began her career at St. Xavier in 1997. Since that time she has served on the St. Xavier Ignatian Summit committee and the Healthy Behaviors committee. She is a past representative for the St. Xavier Faculty Association for Faculty Life and serves as X-Travaganza Student Volunteer Organizer. She is a lifelong member of St. James White Oak Parish. Nancy and her husband, Kyle, have two sons, Alex ’18 and Drew ’20. Her father John Stubenrauch was a member of the Class of 1954.
What is most rewarding about being a part of the St. Xavier community? The St. Xavier community covers the entire Cincinnati area and the school is so well respected. I love being in different parts of town and running into past and current students. I wear my spirit wear often and many people comment positively about the school and share how they are connected to it. Even when bike riding on vacation, people have yelled “Go Bombers!” as I pass. What has been the constant in the St. X educational experience? Year after year I have been impressed by the level of excellence that goes into every educational and extracurricular activity at this school. Dedicated teachers, students, and coaches spend countless hours before and after school preparing for their classes, sports and activities. Involvement and striving for success is a constant at St. Xavier. That is why you rarely see an empty parking lot at school! You recently donated a kidney. Why did you make this decision? A couple of years ago I applied to be a donor for the mother of a past student. Since that time I have been blessed with good health. I felt the call to help someone out who has not been so lucky. While I ultimately was
not needed for that donation, the hospital asked if I would be interested in being matched with another local recipient. After reflecting on that decision for about a year, I decided to move forward with the process. When I learned that someone from my parish was in need of a kidney transplant, I asked to be tested to see if I was a match and I was! Most staff and students have been surprised by the decision and they have expressed both their admiration of and concern for me. I know a lot of prayers were sent my way! The administration was very supportive of my decision and didn’t hesitate to approve my required time off.
How would you describe St. Xavier from the eyes of a parent? I have seen both of my sons be challenged by the high academic standards and challenging athletic programs at the school. They have developed a strong desire to be successful and matured significantly during their time here. I can’t say enough about the leadership of the cross country and football programs. The coaches’ concern for teaching life lessons through hard work and commitment has impressed me and helped my boys grow into men. How would you describe the St. Xavier Advantage? Students and their parents remain part of the community after graduation and so many of them give their time and talents back to the school. There are many past students and parents in our administration, faculty and staff. As a result of having a positive experience here, they have returned to continue the mission. We also have very strong educational leadership, many donors to support our impressive facilities, and countless dedicated volunteers that support our activities. Winter 2019

What’s In Your Attic? Help Wanted!
Under the leadership of archivists Karl Hauck and Nicholas Kemper, and in cooperation with Xavier University, the St. Xavier archives is currently updating and expanding. We surprisingly have very few artifacts from our history, especially from our years downtown. We are sending out a call to the Long Blue Line for donations: knick-knacks, collectibles, sports memorabilia, clothing, literature, photographs—no item is too small or insignificant! As you do your spring-cleaning, please consider donating anything you might have that will help us tell our story to future generations. All donations will be carefully preserved in our archives and will help celebrate our long and storied history. Please send all donations, including name, graduating year, and any relevant information to: St. Xavier High School Archives 600 West North Bend Road, Cincinnati, OH 45224
