From the President Congratulations to Tim Reilly ’76, the next president of St. Xavier High School! I had the privilege of working with Tim when I joined him on our board in 2008, and then in my first years as president. I have always found him to be passionate about St. Xavier and strongly committed to Catholic education in Cincinnati. It is also a relief to be able to tell you where I am going next year: I will be serving as president at Colegio San Ignacio in Puerto Rico. I have already been a member of the board there since the fall of 2016, which is helping to smooth out the learning curve for me. I am getting to know the school and some of the key players before I officially begin on July 1.
While I will miss St. X and my friends in Cincinnati a great deal, I am excited to take on a new challenge and to join another wonderful school community.

St. Xavier has been my home for twelve amazing years of my life, first as a scholastic and now as president. I have learned so much from you, and have been molded into the person I am today by both the challenge and support I have received here. I would also like to say thank you to The Gardner Foundation and all the generous donors who have been building my named scholarship endowment. While I will miss St. X and my friends in Cincinnati a great deal, I am excited to take on a new challenge and to join another wonderful school community. It will be fun to live my life in Spanish again, too. The weather in Puerto Rico is beautiful all year round, so come visit!

Colegio San Ignacio was founded in 1952 and sits on a beautiful campus in the Río Piedras neighborhood of San Juan. Six hundred boys—from 7th to 12th grades—develop into Men for Others as they follow a rigorous, Jesuit, college prep curriculum. They are expected to be academically proficient in both English and Spanish, as about half of the graduates come to the US mainland for college. Hurricanes Irma and María certainly impacted the campus, although the buildings were spared significant structural damage.

Ignatian Family Teach-In From November 4-6, 2017, nearly 2,000 individuals gathered for the 20th annual Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice in Washington, D.C. The yearly gathering addressed timely social justice issues in the context of Catholic faith tradition—this year with a primary focus on racism and immigration. Known as the largest annual Catholic social justice gathering in the U.S., the Teach-In attracts many young people ages 16-22, representing more than 120 Jesuit and other Catholic universities, high schools, and parishes in the U.S., as well as Canada, Mexico, and El Salvador. The 2017 theme, Rowing Into the Deep: Magis Meets Justice, called attendees to explore a more deeply authentic, courageous, generous,

Music Concerts Spread Cheer for the Holidays The St. Xavier Music programs were busy spreading holiday cheer throughout the month of December. The Jazz Band, X-Men, Men in Black, Ensemble X and Chamber Blues entertained crowds during winter concerts as well as a school-wide Christmas assembly. Members of the choral program also hosted beautiful Christmas Dinners for two evenings providing holiday cheer for those in attendance.

Career ConneXtions Program Off to Great Start! An exciting new program has launched this year that will help shape the lives of St. Xavier students. The St. Xavier Experiential Learning Program (newly named Career ConneXtions) is focused on connecting our students more formally with the many accomplished St. X Alumni and parents in industries across the country for career exploration. This program will include a regular cadence of external speakers, mentoring, job-shadow days, a career fair, and summer internship opportunities (paid and un-paid). Additionally, a curriculum to provide job-readiness skills such as interviewing, networking, and resume/cover letter writing will be offered.
There is still time to get involved. Opportunities to get involved include being a speaker, mentoring a student, or hosting a job shadow or summer internship. Please visit stxavier.org/careerconneXtions and let us know where you would like to help. Also, if your son is interested in being part of the program, please have him contact his College Advisor. We believe this program comes at a critical time in our students’ journey to discover their life’s mission with the benefit of learning from those who have experience and wisdom to share.
The program formally launched in November with an educational topic on Networking and Interviewing Tips. Throughout November, we conducted practice interviews for any student interested. We also hosted two fantastic speakers - Scott Green (Andrew ’20) spoke to the Finance and Investing Club about Careers in Finance, and Andy Blankemeyer ’05, CEO of Beacon Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, spoke to 40+ students on the Importance of Networking. In December, the Mentoring Program launched with 40+ mentors across a broad range of industries matched with students to help better understand career and field of study decisions. A heartfelt THANK YOU to the 50+ Alumni and parents who have already signed up to volunteer their time and share their experience. As Men and Women for Others, you are making this program possible and playing a vital role in shaping our next generation of St. Xavier leaders.
Annual Canned Food Helps Those In Need St. X students and the entire community worked hard and helped us collect a total of 164,235 pounds of food for the 2017 Canned Food Drive! Students, parents, and other members of our school community contributed to help 575 families in our community who find themselves in need as well as filling the food pantries of 27 different social service agencies. Deliveries were also made to two Appalachian communities. This is a wonderful testament to our school spirit, and to our school motto of Men for and With Others.

Grandparents’ Breakfast St. Xavier welcomed a record number of Class of 2021 Grandparents to the school to celebrate the 5th Annual Grandparents’ Communion Breakfast! Freshmen students were encouraged to invite their Grandparents to St. X and almost 500 students and Grandparents attended. The morning consisted of Mass celebrated by St. Xavier President Fr. Tim Howe SJ and was followed by a complimentary continental breakfast in the cafeteria. Freshmen then spent time with their Grandparents introducing them to new friends, touring the school and sharing with them their experiences at St. Xavier.
New Crosswalk on Campus If you have been on campus lately you might have noticed a new crosswalk for our students who park on our South campus. This new safety feature is all in thanks to the leadership of parent Chris Jacobs (son Paul ’20.) Chris noticed the need and did research on how to get a permanent crosswalk on North Bend Road for the safety of our students and those driving on the road. In typical Long Blue Line fashion, his search landed him with the name of Jack Pflume who incidentally had a son John ’89 who graduated from St. Xavier. Jack knew just what to do to make the crosswalk happen and did the
necessary study pro-bono. Jack found St. Xavier alum Bill Luttmer ’82 (son William ’10) who was familiar with installation of this safety feature. Bill generously paid for half of the crosswalk while Chris made up the difference and Bill installed everything for free. Thank you to Chris, Jack and Bill for your kindness, generosity and fortitude to make our students safer. The Long Blue Line is truly an amazing thing!
Walk For X Walk for X was once again a huge success! In just two weeks our community raised over $124,000.00, easily eclipsing our goal. More than 1,530 boys and 200 faculty and staff walked, biked or ran 6.2 miles around Finneytown. Thank you to all who contributed to support the Long Blue Line.

Theatre Xavier’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Theatre Xavier wowed audiences this fall with its latest production, A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Audiences were treated to outstanding performances by the actors, beautiful singing by St. X choir members, impressive sets and flawless execution by the crew.

Fall Phonathon Led by 25 Senior Class Chairmen, more than 160 students participated in the fall phonathon. The students were dedicated to staying late to bring in as many donations as possible to raise support for the St. X Annual Fund. The phonathon raised $146,962 in pledges. 2018 -Travaganza X X-Travaganza is an annual St. Xavier High School tradition, bringing together parents, alumni and friends of St. Xavier to enjoy fun events while supporting the students. X-Travaganza proceeds directly benefit all St. Xavier students by funding educational programs and co-curriculars that contribute to the students’ development as Men for Others.

Vice President’s Message Tony Schad ’81
It’s 2018! With the turn to a new year a lot of added focus turns to what will be a magical few days in March. X-Travaganza 2018 will take place on March 9 and 10. This year magical is the right description for what happens each year as our theme is XPerience the Magic!
One of the things that make St. X magical is how our current parents support our mission. The theme was picked by our co-chairs, Michelle and Mark Nagle and Allyson and Mike Schumacher. I remember the discussion about the theme. Sometimes I am asked what makes St. X so special or magical. One of the things that make St. X magical is how our current parents support our
mission. Our current parents see firsthand what happens with their sons on a daily basis. They see the growth and formation that occurs during four years. They see the dedication and leadership of our faculty and staff. They see their sons change. Robel Kidane, Class of 2007, said it best during a talk with incoming parents during his senior year when he said, “I came into St. X a boy for self and now I am leaving a man for others.” The magic is more than the fantastic academics. Yes, that is important. But the magic is the formation our young men get as they discover themselves as a part of the far bigger picture. The magic is the effort our kids put into community service efforts such as the canned food drive. The magic is being just as vital a member of our more than 100 member varsity football team on the sidelines as those on the field. The magic is the dedication and striving for the Magis that each member of our marching band shows. The magic is our faculty’s and staff ’s concern for the whole person when working with our students. The magic is why people like the Nagle’s, Schumacher’s and
more than 800 volunteers give of their time and talent for X-Travaganza. They are here for others… not just themselves. The magic is also why more than 70% of our current parents give back through their gifts to the Parent Pledge Program. Isn’t that amazing? In a school where more than 42% of our families are on need-based tuition assistance to have their sons attend St. X, more than 70% give back financially on top of paying tuition. It is what makes St. X so strong. Our parents have a vested interest in what happens here with their sons. Just like our faculty and staff, our parents have a vested interest in the success of this school. It is not easy, but then again, is anything worthwhile easy? So I encourage you to help us make that “Magic” happen. Please purchase tickets to support the Grand Raffle. Please attend X-Travaganza on at least one of our two nights in March. Alumni Profile Eric Breissinger ’85 Balancing the Rigors of Career, Family and Fun as a Man for Others
Eric Breissinger ’85 attributes his success in life to the values he learned as a St. X ‘Man for Others.’ “St. X formed me into the man I am today and opened doors for me. I graduated with a profound sense of ability to handle anything that was thrown my way.” The St. X Advantage…. Breissinger states, “The St. X Advantage is its values. The values are key. When I graduated from St. X, I felt very prepared for anything that could be thrown at me. I was 16 years old and went to the East Coast for college at Yale and I made it. I attribute that to my family and St. Xavier. I think the academic rigor and the balance of the whole person, Cura Personalis, is really what makes the St. X Advantage special. It’s the intellectually, socially, spiritually, well-rounded person you become at St. X that makes you able to handle any situation.” Eric Breissinger, President, Procter & Gamble Canada, believes his love for swimming and competition has also been a key driver of his success. His weekly schedule is timed like that of a swimmer, down to a hundredth of a second, between Toronto and his family’s home in Cincinnati. For the last four and a half years, Eric has been coaching the St. Xavier swim team and spends much of his weekends working with the athletes. [Only the last one and a half years as a commuter.] “It is an absolute honor to work with the boys and be part of the terrific coaching staff. Swimming has been a big part of my life and I’ve been coaching since graduating from Yale. I love coaching at St. X because it allows me to combine my passions for the sport and the school and demonstrate leadership
When I graduated from St. X, I felt very prepared for anything that could be thrown at me. skills to the young men we’re developing. Last year, we graduated nine seniors who’ve gone on to swim at Division I schools. St. X is very, very special.” Eric began swimming competitively early in life and continued to do so throughout his four years at St. X. It didn’t end there. He was a swimmer and Captain of the swim team at Yale, where he swam together with his two younger brothers, Marc ’86, and Kirc ’88. “Swimming with my brothers for Yale was a great experience, but it was St. X that was the most formative of all my years in school.” Eric and his wife, Ellen, are successfully raising three children. Jack ’15 is a junior at Georgia Tech, Peter ’17 is a freshman swimmer at St. Louis University, and daughter, Bridget, is a sophomore at St. Ursula Academy. Not only do the Breissingers give of their time and talent, but they also support St. Xavier through The Eric and Ellen Breissinger Scholarship Fund. In February, Eric will be speaking to St. Xavier students about leadership in conjunction with the St. X Career ConneXtions program.

Welcome back to St. Xavier, Fr. Terry Baum SJ Twenty-eight years ago, Fr. Baum was the Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs focusing on the well-known academic rigors of a St. Xavier education, specifically scheduling, counseling, tutoring and supervision over the entire student body. Additionally, he assisted with campus ministry and worked with the Kairos retreat program.
Name one highlight of your life you’d like to share.
Today, Fr. Baum rejoins St. Xavier as the Alumni Chaplain and will provide pastoral and sacramental ministry to students, faculty, staff, parents and alumni. Having drawn on his experience over the last 28 years, he will also be assisting the St. Xavier Advancement Department and work with alumni to provide the academic environment that allows St. Xavier students to thrive academically and spiritually.

Fr. Baum reflected on his first assignment at St. Xavier, “I was young and focused on doing the right thing. I was tough and strict. Now, I’m more pastorally oriented and realized long ago that ‘strict’ isn’t always the right path.”
What’s the most rewarding part of being a member of the St. Xavier community? The pride I feel and the commitment to providing an excellent, Catholic, Jesuit education to young men regardless of socio-economic status.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time? I love classical music, especially opera and I love to read. I also have dabbled in calligraphy over the years.

Where did you grow up?
How many siblings do you have? I have two brothers. One is my fraternal twin and he is a civil engineer in Alabama. And, I have a younger brother in Chicago who is an accountant.
When did you know you wanted to become a Jesuit priest? As a sophomore at Xavier University.
What is the definition of Magis and how do you live it? Magis is automatically a part of a Jesuit institution. Often translated as “the more,” Magis also includes going to a greater depth of understanding. This can also be applied to relationships, not only with God, but also with one another. It’s about studying things with a greater intensity or depth of understanding of a topic or spirituality or relationships. It is something that we are called to all of the time in Jesuit work. We welcome Fr. Baum back to Cincinnati and the St. Xavier Community!

IRA Charitable Rollover Impacts Students While Reducing Taxable Income
Ed VonderBrink graduated from St. X in 1962 and went on to a very successful career in public accounting. Joe and Linda Staneck feel proud of the young man that their son, Joe ‘94, has become as a result of his time at St. Xavier. Carolyn Scheve’s late husband, John Scheve ’53, operated a successful business and felt deeply about the impact that St. X had for him and for his two sons, TJ ‘86 and Eric ‘89. What do they have in common? St. Xavier has profoundly impacted their lives and they all make gifts to St. X through their IRAs using a strategy that is available to those 70 ½ and older. When individuals turn 70 ½, they must begin Required Minimum Distribution from their IRA. In December of 2015, the IRA Charitable Rollover was signed into permanent law, allowing taxpayers age 70 ½ or older to transfer up to $100,000 annually from their IRA accounts directly to charity without having to recognize the distribution as income.

I chose to give utilizing the IRA Charitable Rollover because I made a pledge to the Class of 1962 Scholarship and the IRA Rollover makes the most sense for my circumstances.” Carolyn Scheve gives from her IRA to St. Xavier to honor the memory of her late husband, John ’53. “He believed so much in St. Xavier education and the Jesuit philosophy. We really appreciate St. Xavier’s Cura Personalis approach, how they take the time to care for each student in their own way.” Linda Staneck reflects, “It was important for us to send our children to schools that worked in partnership with us. St. Xavier has always owned a piece of our hearts. We wanted our son to be at a place that didn’t just care about grades, but that

“That is when we decided to fund a scholarship at St. Xavier High School,” according to Joe Staneck. “Transferring money directly from our IRA helped us and allowed us to give the school more money than if we took the IRA distribution ourselves and then made a gift.” Staneck adds, “It is really important that the distribution from the IRA go directly to the charity. It can’t hit your account or it is taxable.” The new tax law nearly doubles the standard deduction, so fewer taxpayers will itemize. The IRA Charitable Rollover benefits those who do not itemize, potentially making it even more valuable for those who qualify. Changing of the Guard 20 Questions with the 41st President of St. Xavier High School—Mr. Tim Reilly ’76
Mr. Tim Reilly ’76 will become the 41st President of St. Xavier High School on July 1, 2018. Mr. Reilly joins St. Xavier after serving as the principal of St. Ignatius of Loyola for the past 23 years. He and his wife of 34 years, Becky, have four children, Patrick ’02, Mary Kate Newton, Will ’09 and Anne. For more information on Mr. Reilly, please visit www.stxavier.org/president
1 How do you begin your day? I wake up early and start with 15 minutes of prayer and reflection. Sometimes I use the Examen App, “Reimagining the Ignatian Examen” as a great way to keep life prioritized.
2 Magis is a way of life in the Jesuit community. How do you find it in your daily life? I enjoy reflecting, prioritizing and evaluating to figuring out the path I need to follow to use my time and talent to determine what’s most important every day so I continue to grow and get better.
3 When did you know you wanted to make your life’s focus children and education from a faith-based perspective? In my early teaching years, I felt a strong call to include faith as part of what I was teaching. My wife, Becky and I volunteered as youth ministers at Bellermine Chapel. Things just blossomed from there as we continued to work with youth and the church. When the opportunity to become the principal of St. Catharine was presented, it was an easy “yes.”
4 How do you view technology in education and how it impacts youth today? Technology is powerful when used to cultivate curiosity, solve problems, build relationships, and make learning more effective and efficient (which are my favorite E words.) I remember talking to Fr. Walter Deye SJ, who was president at the time, about the soon to be implemented 1:1 program. He made a comment, “Our 1:1 program at St. X will always be person to person.” I really love that philosophy because technology can help build relationships with knowledge, each other, and with God.
5 How would your former St. Ignatius students describe your personality? The other day a second grader told me I was like her grandpa at school. I believe that was her way of saying she feels loved. I hope they notice that I genuinely love and value each student. I believe in each and every one of them. I am excited for the world and how they will contribute to it in the future. I don’t claim to know all the good they will add, but I am convinced they each have gifts that need to be shared. Each one is a blessing.
6 What is the single, greatest lesson you’ve learned in life? “Love them anyway.”
7 What is the single, most important piece of advice you’ve ever given? “You are enough.” I think our world works very hard to convince people they are inadequate. As if only the highest achievers, the strongest, the holiest, etc., will find happiness and eternal life. At St. Xavier we will accept and love them and encourage them to strive for the Magis to be the best possible version of themselves.
8 What’s your favorite thing about St. X? St. X celebrates the whole person. I believe virtues are celebrated as much, if not more, than achievement levels. I love the five pillars of the Grad at Grad. Loving, Religious, Committed to Doing Justice, Intellectually Competent and Open to growth. To me that is an irresistible mission to promote.
9 What’s your first memory of St. X? I was in 5th or 6th grade. I remember my oldest brother Tom coming home from a snowy St. X- Moeller football game chanting with his buddies, “3-0, in the snow, didn’t go 10 and 0!”

I was fortunate to have Mr. Reilly as my grade school principal at St. Ignatius of Loyola. Not only was Mr. Reilly my principal, but he was someone who inspired me to be a Man for Others before I knew what that really meant. I have no doubt that Mr. Reilly serving as president of St. Xavier High School will only strengthen what the Long Blue Line already has, and he will help us grow as a community. A.J. Wessel ’20

What do you think will change about St. X over the next five to ten years? I think St. X students and all schools have a giant cultural challenge. When the world changes, we have to evolve our programs too. At the risk of sounding dramatic, I see a culture surrounding all of us that would have us buy into priorities that do not lead to happiness. I think the current youth are particularly susceptible. I know there are already many strong mentors, lessons, programs at St. X., but I think it will only help if we can identify and increase the strategies that teach our young men to develop priorities and values that will lead to long-term happiness. For example, I have seen a strong impact by a recent increase in direct evangelization in many schools in the archdiocese and impressive growth in ownership of virtues as a result. It will be informative to discover what the board and staff see as best opportunities to further the mission. How exciting will it be if in the next 5-10 years we can see an even bigger embrace of the Gospel message?
15 What do you like to do in your free time? I love spending time with my family, and most outdoor activities from kayaking to gardening. I like to build furniture and fix things.

Please describe your parents and their influence on your life career? It took a while for my parents to see that my ministry was teaching. I think my dad especially lost some sleep when I broke the news to him that I was changing my major from Botany to Education. It didn’t take long to gain their support of my career. Dad and mom were as careful as you could be to not compare all eight of us to the same standards. Maybe that is at the root of why I try to meet people on their terms.
17 Who is your favorite author? I enjoy anything by James Martin SJ.
11 What one thing do you want the St. X community to know? As has been true for generations, we will continue to invest passion, time, talent and treasure in providing the opportunities for each Bomber to find and develop his talents. Together, we will offer companionship on their journey.
12 What would people be surprised to know? I have seven brothers (all eight of us are St. X grads), seven sisters-in-laws, 45 nephews and nieces, (60 if you count their spouses!), and two grandchildren so far.
13 What is your greatest professional achievement? I have been blessed to be on a pathway that allowed me to champion all learners in Catholic schools. At a time when most Catholic schools faced decline, I am proud to have been on a team that, according to the leadership of the NCEA, grew St. Ignatius to become one of the largest and most effective in the country. I have been blessed as a trustee of the NCEA (National Catholic Educators Association) to support Catholic education across the country.
14 What do you want to be known for? Passionately finding ways to remove barriers to true fulfillment encountered by the students, faculty, staff and all members of the Long Blue Line.
18 Describe the St. Xavier Advantage. No school I know has fully developed the mission and strategically worked to match students with resources like St. Xavier. Parents can confidently share their most valuable possession, their child, with St. X, knowing the vision of the board, faculty, staff and community will be focused on developing the full person, in mind, body and spirit.
19 What are you most looking forward to as the President of St. Xavier High School? I am most looking forward to leading our community. The buck will now stop with me. I will be able to own the good things and figure out how to fix those that may need improvement. I am anxious to help lead our community and figure out where we need to be in the next 10 to 20 years.
20 What will you do the first month you are here? I am excited to get to know our faculty, staff, students, parents and members of the Long Blue Line. In order to lead people, you have to know them. It is the people that make an organization.

Faculty Focus Donald S. DiGiacomo Donald S. DiGiacomo started his career being hired by Coach Steve Rasso as a JV Football coach in 1986. “Coach D” chose St. Xavier because he was ready to compete and coach at the highest level in Cincinnati. Since that time, he has been involved in a laundry list of activities in the classroom and beyond. He doesn’t consider his career a job or work… and when asked how he is he often replies “another day in paradise!”

Through all the things you have been through and seen over the years, what has changed the most and what has stayed the same? In the years I have been here, there has always been an excellence and academic rigor. I have been impressed with the quality of teachers/staff/ administration and the students. With the Grad at Grad as our foundation, I am thrilled to be part of an environment where “Cura Personalis” remains at the heart of how we interact with our students. 16

I have always been happy to be part of a place that has a continued commitment to doing things the “right” way. Over the years the size of the school – its students and facilities- has changed. Things like the Daily Order and technology are different, but one thing has stayed the same, our commitment to students. What is most rewarding about being part of the St. Xavier community? The most rewarding part of my work is my involvement in student formational growth from little boys (as freshmen) to young men (as seniors). I get the added bonus of seeing this formation take place inside the Academic classroom AND outside in the Athletic classroom. Recently, I’ve enjoyed working with students whose fathers I taught/coached when they were St. Xavier students. Your son is a current student. What have you noticed as a parent and faculty member about his experience? For many years I have been witness to many fine, young boys growing and developing during their time at St. X utilizing our Jesuit traditions and values as their guide (ie “Cura Personalis”, Man for Others, Grad at Grad, etc.) Now, as Luke nears the end of his experience as a student at X, I realize how much the entire community has impacted his development. Often, I am fortunate to hear from colleagues about Luke’s academic progress and growth. I have witnessed him interact with his friends and observed his daily unique fashion ‘style’ at school. Previously, I was under the impression that family values and parents do the MOST to form their children into outstanding individuals. But, I now realize that many very loving and caring people at St. X have contributed to the development of
the fine young man Luke has become. It confirms the importance of my work at St. X. As a teacher, coach, and friend to each of these boys, I have the chance (and responsibility) to contribute to their development. Having received much from St. X in terms of Luke’ s outstanding education, I will be reminded to continually give back to all of my students in the same loving and caring manner. How would you describe the St. Xavier Advantage? We do the educational experience as well as the best high schools in the country. Our “Advantage” is rooted in our individual care and concern for each student, it is accentuated in our extracurricular activities, it is formational in our approach to time management, community service and religious formation and it is forward thinking while remaining firmly rooted in our Jesuit tradition. What else do you want to share? I have been blessed to have been found by St. Xavier High School. I owe a tremendous amount of gratitude to Steve Rasso and Mike Trainor for seeing something in me and hiring me (I was an average student with no connection to private education). At the first in-service Mass I attended in the fall of 1988, I was overcome with emotion... I became acutely aware of what a “special” place St. Xavier High School is. I remember thinking to myself, “If I ever have a son, I want him to attend St. X!” I was lucky to share an office with two iconic men, Dick Berning and Steve Rasso, for almost 20 years...a special blessing to learn about the inner-workings and history of St. Xavier High School. I’ve continued to embrace and give thanks for those blessings. I love what I do and the young men I work with. St. X is not “perfect”...but, it is a wonderful place to come to work each day!
Student Spotlight Nicholas J. Reichert ’18 Nicholas J. Reichert ’18 truly reflects what it is to be a St. Xavier student… to be yourself and belong. He reflects the dedication and determination of our students. Nicholas is involved in almost every facet of St. Xavier. He is the captain of Robot-X, organizer and vocalist for Liturgical Music, a member of the X-Men Choir, production manager for ESPX, coordinator for Saturday Morning Service at Finn Meadows Farm, a Bomber Pilot, member of the Piano Club and captain of the Math Club. He created a schedule app for all students so they know the bells each day- the X Schedule App. He excels in the classroom as well taking AP Physics C, AP US Government and Politics, AP Calculus BC and Linear Algebra. He is a National Merit Semifinalist. He has many relatives in the Long Blue Line including his dad Eric ’83, uncle Ron ’87, three great uncles Jim ’62, Richard ’67 and Dave Schwain ’63 as well as many cousins. Why did you decide to attend St. X? I had already been leaning towards St. X because my dad attended, but the decision was up to me. St. X’s fantastic academics and the multitude of extracurriculars made my choice to be a Bomber an easy one.

In every club and activity I participate in, I learn from the students and teachers around me. You are involved in a variety of areas at school. Talk about these experiences and how they have impacted your life. In every club and activity I participate in, I learn from the students and teachers around me. I wasn’t the best pianist or vocalist when I entered St. X, but just seeing how other students in choir and liturgical music perform has helped me become a much better musician. Robot-X has taught me so much—how to work on a team, all parts of the engineering process, and now how to lead and manage our crew. I went into robotics not knowing the difference between a nut and a bolt, and now I’m building a smart walker to help the blind see. I’ve learned so much from my experience here at X. Now as a senior I’m trying to give back to underclassmen and pass on the many things I’ve learned. Cherish every opportunity you have and every person that you meet. Reach out to others and build up your relationships with your friends. Don’t ever be afraid to talk to someone. Whether it’s asking a teacher or friend for help, a coach for a question about a sports team, or a moderator of a club to ask about joining, everyone at St. X wants to make your time here fantastic. There are times when you will make mistakes and mess up, but learn from them and use them to become a better person.
Describe the St. Xavier Advantage and what it means to you. The St. Xavier Advantage is the opportunity to grow in every aspect of life here as a student—as a musician, athlete, engineer, actor, scholar, and more—while at the same time being surrounded by an immensely caring, loving community. Cura Personalis (“care for the whole person”) is real here at St. X, and a vital part of what sets St. X apart from other schools. There’s no place I would’ve rather spent the last four years!

’53 Carey Schulten recently played Maridoe Golf Club in Carrollton, TX, making it the 1000th course that he has played. Carey is a course analyst for Golf Digest and is the Board President of the Texas Golf Association.
’80 Jerry Ellig, PhD was appointed chief economist of the Federal Communications Commission by FCC Chairman Ajit Pai in July 2017. His principal project will be to help set up the FCC’s new Office of Economic Analysis.

’10 Blaise Jones had his first book published. “All About Sharks: A Complete Guide to the World’s Most Misunderstood Predator” is geared toward elementary students (ages 8-14) and is a compilation of the essays that Blaise wrote for the website TheSuperFins.com. It’s structured in a question/answer format, addressing common misunderstandings and curiosities about sharks.

’06 Dr. James Mertens recently made the front page of Physics World for his work modeling the universe using Einstein’s equations of relativity. This is the first time such work has been accomplished using a fully relativistic numerical approach. In 2016 Jim finished his PhD in Astrophysics from Case Western Reserve. He and his wife, Dr. Johanna Nagy, also an astrophysicist, will be moving to Toronto Canada to continue their post-doctoral research. Jim will continue his work in an independent post-doctorate position at York University, the University of Toronto, and the Perimeter Institute.
