From the President To say I was deeply moved by this year’s Mass of the Holy Spirit is an understatement. Nearly 400 freshmen were enthusiastically cheered into our community by upperclassmen, parents, faculty and local clergy as they filed into the Berning Gymnasium to become official members of the Long Blue Line. The reverent participation students exhibited during the Mass was a sight to behold. After the Mass, students shared their Bomber pride with the singing of the Alma Mater. A chorus of 1,500 young men singing with full voice is awe-inspiring!

A chorus of 1,500 young men singing with full voice is awe-inspiring! In his homily, Fr. Walter Deye SJ, current Rector for the Jesuits in Cincinnati and the 39th President of St. Xavier, asked all of us “Did you notice; did you see? What will you choose to do?” He challenged our community to see the spirit of the Lord and use it to our best. That spirit is evident here and makes St. Xavier a remarkable place. As you read through this issue of St. Xavier Magazine,

Tim Reilly ’76

you will find a long list of people who have given their treasure to support the mission of St. Xavier. Many of your names are on these lists, so thank you! Those who pray for us, volunteer their time and talent, we thank you as well! Two months into my “freshman year” as president, I can see your generosity in all these ways being put to good use. These three components, prayers, time and gifts, are critical to our mission to put forth virtuous young Men for Others. These investments las a lifetime for the student and alumni of St. Xavier. During the Mass of the Holy Spirit I was also officially installed as the 41st President of St. Xavier High School. Fr. Deye declared, “We call upon him and entrust him to honor St. Xavier High School’s 187-year history, guide its present and secure its future as the 41st President of St. Xavier High School.” I share that commission with all of you, and on behalf of the entire St. Xavier community and those intertwined in the Long Blue Line, thank you. My Best,

Timothy Reilly ’76

Vice President’s Message Tony Schad ’81

The 2018-19 school year will be my 18th year at St. Xavier. That includes my four years as a student that concluded in 1981. So have it be told, this is my 14th year as an employee and my 4th as Vice President for Advancement. Time goes so fast. St. X, even after all those years, has been and continues to be a very inspirational place to call home each day. St. Xavier High School has such a rich and storied tradition. One of the great traditions is that this wonderful place is continually changing. Case in point, our new president, Tim Reilly will bring his style and viewpoints to the position of President. Change continues to happen because we continue to strive for the Magis. Our inspiration is to strive to get better. Sometimes that inspiration happens by creating better learning environments. As an example over the summer our Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs, Jen Ziebol-Williams, and Major Gift Officer, Ralph Nardini, worked hand in hand to improve the learning environment in each of our classrooms by solidifying funding for and replacing all the desks in the school. This project gives our students and teachers the opportunity for a better learning environment than we have had in the past. Jen and Ralph had a lot of help. Just as an example, Star Vondrell, our Facilities Director, and her staff did an incredible job with this immense project. Ever try moving and putting together 1,600 desks? Were the old desks providing a poor learning environment? No. There were challenges with the old desks. Balancing a laptop on them was one example. The size and comfort of the desks was another. And there were more challenges. But there was an inspiration to make it better. That is what we ask of our students. Strive to be better. Strive to be the best student. Strive to be the best brother, son or person you can be. Strive to improve your spiritual life. Strive to be inspired and to be a leader and man for others.

10

St. Xavier High School Magazine Fall 2018

This project is just one example of how we strive to provide the best education and Catholic, Jesuit formation possible. It might not be the most exciting project that you have ever heard us discuss. “Oh boy… new desks!” But there is inspiration in creating comfortable and more effective learning environments. It is student and learning centered. It is change and it holds true as St. X tradition. There are many more examples. Let me mention two more. If you get a chance, ask us about our Career ConneXions Program and Entrepreneurship Club. Both are incredibly unique and link our students with the Long Blue Line. I know there are so many different things going on and I talk to you about desks! Sorry, the project inspired me!

Another tradition that continues to serve as an inspiration is the generosity of so many of you. The financial support of our mission here at St. X is truly inspirational. I have used the word inspired several times in this article. Another tradition that continues to serve as an inspiration is the generosity of so many of you. The financial support of our mission here at St. X is truly inspirational. So as you look at all the names on the honor roll of donors of those that have supported our efforts here at St. X, please know how grateful we (our students, faculty and staff ) are that you have chosen to support the wonderful things going on here at St. Xavier. I hope that you are inspired by what happens here and that you continue to support the wonderful mission of this incredible school.

Financial Report Invest in the Inspiration of Men For Others The generosity of the benefactors on the following pages makes a difference in the lives of our students and provides a foundation for our young men which empowers them to make a difference in our world. The generosity of our benefactors makes sure that any academically qualified young man can attend St. X regardless of his economic means. This year more than 600 young men qualify for need-based tuition assistance. That’s more than 41% of our student body! This year more than $6.1 million is needed to cover tuition assistance for our students. That includes the $1,000 gap support (difference between what we charge in tuition and the actual cost to educate) that each of our students receives, plus what we allocate in need-based tuition assistance. We ask our current parents to try to cover that gap through our Parent Pledge Program. This year that gap is $1.5 million. Our endowment, thanks to the generosity of so many, will contribute $2.1 million and we will be asking our alumni and friends for a gift to help with the additional $2.5 million needed this year.

What are some of the results of the support received by so many? • More than 85% of our students performed thousands of hours of service working with dozens of agencies supporting hundreds of children and adults in need in our community. • The highest ACT average in the history of the school (29.2) was achieved and that included five students with perfect scores. • 328 seniors received more than $59 Million in academic or athletic scholarships. • Nationally recognized Fine Arts programing • In just the last four years our students garnered eleven state championships in multiple sports and the athletic program has been honored seven years in a row as the best in the GCL. • Fifteen hundred young men received a formative, Catholic, Jesuit education. Thank you for your support! Your investment in the young men of St. Xavier High School is truly inspirational.

I came into the internship thinking I would go into engineering, but ended up doing a lot of business things and that helped me possibly think about pursuing my MBA.

Our thanks to the companies who shared their knowledge with the summer interns including: Prus Construction, The Talent Chain, 10XTS, Evers Steel, the Thunderdome Restaurant Group, Pink Ribbon Girls, Judge Dale Stalf, and Campus Suite. Cameron Frueh ’19, Joel Engelhardt ’19 and Vikram Meyer ’20 spoke to the St. Xavier Board of Trustees about the new Career ConneXions program and it’s impact on our students.

The demand for speakers, mentors, job-shadow hosts and internship placements continues to grow as students participate in inspiring and resume-building activities. Teaming up with alumni and non-alumni business leaders in the community, the students are finding opportunities for learning in a variety of industries.

We are looking for industry leaders to double the number of opportunities for internships for 2019. You can make a difference in the Long Blue Line and become a speaker, mentor, job-shadow host, site leader or to sponsor any of these opportunities to nurture current students. Generosity fills the air at St. Xavier Scoreboard The Boosters and one anonymous donor generously filled the need for a new scoreboard at the football stadium. The scoreboard is also a learning tool for students studying media, broadcasting and marketing and will be utilized by the ESPX members. The scoreboard not only showcases the school and the achievements of the students but also allows for sponsorship opportunities. In between plays, the scoreboard introduces the student athletes, informs the spectators on upcoming sport and artistic events and thanks sponsors with logos. This is a dynamic and exciting addition to Ballaban Field that will enhance the student, player and spectator experience!

Desks Under the leadership of Ralph Nardini of the Advancement Office, Star Vondrell, Facilities Director, and Jen Ziebol-Williams, Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs, the students now have new desks that accommodate the tools of today’s classroom. Generous donations were received to help buy desks that fit the tasks and environment of the St. X classrooms and allow for more movement and active participation. Sophomore, Patrick Gormley states, “The old desks didn’t have enough room for computers and a book or notebook. The new desks have bigger tabletops so there is now room for both.” Ms. Vondrell was instrumental in finding the right style of desks that would fit the classrooms, accommodate right and left handed students,

St. Xavier passed the kindness forward by donating over 800 used desks to various schools in Cincinnati and Indiana including: Finneytown

Young Alumni Basketball League 102 Alumni, assembled into 9 teams, are participating in the Young Alumni Basketball league. The league plays Wednesday nights in the fall for 12 weeks culminating in a 3-week play off in mid-November. The league fills a need for alumni who would like to play basketball while staying in connection with their Bomber brothers. This season, players from class years from 2001-2013 are competing including St. X Athletic Hall of Famer Mike Hurley ’02. The Class of 2008, led by Walt Gibler, Nate Bowman, and Danny Whelan, have won two years in a row. The 2017 MVP was Joe Ries ’06. “I had to check myself out 3 minutes into the game due to exhaustion and my only shot attempt was an air balled layup, but reconnecting with old high school friends made all that embarrassment worth it” – Tom Muething ’09 “It’s an awesome feeling to be able to play in highly competitive games alongside fellow bombers with real refs in historic Berning Gymnasium

Golf Outing The annual Young Alumni Golf Outing was held this past August at the Glenview Golf Course. This is the 3rd year for the Blue Blazer first place award. The losing foursome generally wins the coveted honor of leftover Walk4X or Music Fest T-shirts. Held on the 3rd Sunday in August each year, the 2018 event hosted 135 young alumni from classes 2002 through 2013. Pictured below, the Blue Blazer winners for 2018 with a score of 16 under par: Mark Veith ’06, Brendan Fey ’06, John Torbeck ’06 & Mike Aluise ’06. Faculty Focus Brian Reinhart Brian Reinhart grew up just outside the small town of Bucyrus, Ohio and is a die-hard Buckeye having graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in Public Relations. Sports have always been a part of his life having played football and a thrower in track in high school and active in just about every sport since. Brian has also coached football, wrestling, and track during his 15 years in Catholic Secondary Education. He has served as a Theology teacher, Campus Minister, Associate Athletic Director, Athletic Director, Student Activities Director and Assistant Principal at schools in Ohio, Philadelphia and Maryland. His Jesuit background includes being taught by the Jesuits while at the University of Toronto and working at St. Joe’s Prep, Philadelphia’s Jesuit high school. Brian loves to travel and has spent part of his summers the last 18 years doing mission trips around the world.

Why did you choose to make the move to St. Xavier High School? Ever since I was educated by the Jesuits I always had a strong connection with their spirituality and approach to education. This was re-enforced when I worked at St. Joe’s Prep where I quickly got involved in a variety of aspects of the school and experienced first-hand Jesuit education at work. When I saw the posting for the job at St. X I saw it as a great opportunity to bring together my background, passion and spirituality to one of the best schools and athletic programs in the country. What is your philosophy on Athletics? I believe Athletics is truly a co-curricular aspect of a school. Students tend to spend just as much if not more time training, practicing, and preparing for their particular sport which involves a tremendous amount of teaching, character building, and dedication by adults that have been there themselves. Not only is it an extension of the classroom, but a whole new way to learn to push oneself and grow in ways that they often don’t even realize. What are you most looking forward to as the Athletic Director? To be honest I am most looking forward to being a part of a state championship at St. X and celebrating it as a community. You have been here a few months, what has made the biggest impact on you so far? A couple things but the one that comes to mind the most is the passion of St. X by the students, alumni, coaches, families, and adults in the building. Whether they went to school here, sent their kids here or work here, there is a genuine love of what St. X is all about and a strong desire to keep it

16

St. Xavier High School Magazine Fall 2018

going and take it to the next level. The other impact was the first 2 football games. Being able to play in Paul Brown Stadium and then host Colerain really showed with the spirit of St. X is all about.

Anything else you would like to share with the Long Blue Line? It is truly an honor to be a part of the St. X community and to be a part of such an important part of the school. I look forward to building on the traditions of St. X and helping our coaches, staff and student-athletes strive for the “magis” in all they do. Having played and coached sports and having been a member of The Ohio State University Marching Band, I learned first-hand what it means to be a part of a tradition larger than myself, strive for excellence in everything, and not settle for anything average or basic. I have high expectations of myself, the athletic program, and all our sports and will work hard to meet and exceed these expectations. Please know that my door is always open as we all work together to continue and enhance the great Bomber tradition.

X-Peditions On the globe, the long blue line is the equator. In St. X parlance, the Long Blue Line of alumni and student body appears all over the globe. Bomber blue turns up all over the map and we want the evidence. Send us your pictures wearing St. Xavier High School gear or hoisting a copy of St. Xavier magazine at an exotic locale or local landmark. Maybe a picture of Bombers at the Pyramids of Egypt or posing at a Reds game. Either way, let us know where you’ve been displaying your X pride. Send your high-resolution digital images to egormley@stxavier.org or mail prints to Ellen Gormley c/o St. Xavier magazine, 600 W. North Bend Road, Cincinnati, Ohio 45224.
