From the President In the fall magazine each year, you can find the President’s Report: a list of our most generous supporters from the previous year and a financial report to let you know how we are using your investment. This time I’d like to offer you a vision of our finances over time, from 2009 until the present. In 2009, we had been awarding $2.3M in need-based tuition assistance to 28% of our student body. Nine years later, we are granting $4.1M to 42% of our students. Either we’re taking a huge risk or we are right on mission! Poor and middle class students continue to have access to the incomparable St. X experience.
So how do we keep serving poor and middle-class families? Your generosity! Over the years, our tuition has increased from $10,280 in ’09 to $14,425. This has put increased pressure on families who often have a college tuition on one side and a Catholic elementary school tuition or two on the other. Education routinely exceeds the overall rate of inflation due to an economic phenomenon called “Baumol’s cost disease.” Roughly 80% of our annual budget is people: salaries and benefits for the talented men and women who deliver the mission to our students every day. Therefore as long as student/teacher ratio is a measure of school quality, we will never be able to achieve the productivity efficiencies that manufacturers enjoy by making twice as many widgets with half as many employees.

So how do we keep serving poor and middle-class families? Your generosity! In 2009 our scholarship endowment was $17.5M. The 2008 financial crisis had both increased the tuition assistance need and diminished the value of our investments. Thanks to Harry and Linda Fath, and many other selfless donors, today our scholarship endowment stands at $52.2M with an additional $20.1M pledged. Drawing between 4% and 5% each year allows us to strike the right balance between supporting our deserving Bombers and preserving the value of your investment. In addition, more than 100 donors directly support a particular student’s tuition assistance as members of the Loyola Club. Gifts to the Annual Fund, X-Travaganza and other programs make up the rest of the pie. Who are you who support St. X? You are alumni, parents and friends. Last year even 52% of our families on tuition assistance sacrificed out of their need to make a contribution to St. Xavier High School! So what can I say but, “thank you!” And I promise you we are good stewards of your tremendous generosity. Our world needs more Men for Others and you are helping to make that happen.

Mass of the Holy Spirit and Spirit Day On Friday, September 8, St. Xavier Spirit Day 2017 began with the long-standing Jesuit tradition of the Mass of the Holy Spirit.

The entire student body along with faculty, staff and freshman parents gathered in the Berning Gym to welcome the Class of 2021 to the St. X community.
After Mass, students were dismissed to participate in a number of Spirit Day activities positioned around the school.

Overall, the day was a huge success due to our amazing faculty, staff and students.
Students could choose to play basketball in the gyms, tennis on the courts, football on the practice fields, ping pong in the Ellis Gym or numerous video games in the Reynolds Room. Board games, card games and chess matches also challenged our competitive students on Spirit Day. Overall, the day was a huge success due to our amazing faculty, staff and students. Development Chairmen Step Up to Lead Annual Fund Efforts
Twenty-four young men volunteered as the 2017-18 Student Development Chairmen, spending a large portion of their free time to help coordinate the Student Annual Fund Phonathon. These students will assist in organizing the efforts of more than 200 of their fellow classmates and St. Xavier students who will give of their time contacting our alumni on behalf of the annual fund.

St. Xavier Welcomes Students from Barcelona St. Xavier welcomed five exchange students from Barcelona, Spain for three weeks this fall. The students followed their host brothers’ schedules for the duration of their stay learning about the United States, Cincinnati and what it is like to be part of St. Xavier!
42 Annual Big Brothers Car Wash nd
The 42nd annual Big Brothers carwash took place at St. James White Oak, St. Mary’s in Hyde Park, and St. Vivian this fall. Due to the terrific weather, generous patrons, skilled workers, clever advertising and worthy cause, students raised almost $2,000 to help pay for activities with their little brothers this year. Many times, little brothers have shared that attending an event with their big brother was their first time doing such an event like bowling or ice skating. Special thanks go to the student coordinators Michael Callahan ’18, Jack Francy ’18, Jackson Maisel ’18, Max Mahoney ’18, Daniel Roth ’18 and Ross Wiseman ’18.

Golf Outings Alumni were busy on the links this fall. More than 130 St. Xavier Young Alumni from class years 2002 to 2013 hit the links on Sunday, August 21 at the newly renovated Glenview Golf Course to compete for the highly coveted St. X Young Alumni Golf Blue Blazer. The new tradition of the Blue Blazer was established last year by Alumni Director Will Reilly ’09 with the support of Folchi’s and the mystique of the Blue Blazer has only increased, given the record number of Young Alumni participating this year! The winners of the Blue Blazers this year were legends from the Class of 2004. Matt Clarisey, Michael Gillette, Jon Cornette, and Patrick Fleugeman proudly accepted their places in St. X history by donning their Blue Blazers. In keeping with our Men for Others spirit, the worst scoring foursome did not leave empty-handed. They were awarded a past Music Fest t-shirt to ease the loss. The losers/winners of the 2007 Music Fest T-shirts were Class of 2009 members, Kevin Daugherty, Tom Muething, Rob Ortner and Jon Ruther. This was their second year in a row as the bottom scoring foursome. They really love all their Music Fest t-shirts! Thank you to all the alumni who made this the best Young Alumni Golf Outing yet, Berning Printing for sponsoring the outing hats and koozies and Folchi’s for the St. X Blue Blazers.

The Annual Alumni Golf Outing took place on September 11 and was one for the record books. A total of 224 alumni came out to Clovernook Country Club to golf either the morning flight followed by a luncheon or the afternoon flight followed by a dinner. The morning flight champions were Robert Gruber Jr. ’98, Brian Kellett ’98, Bobby Maly ’98 and Eric Goodman ’98. The 2017 AP exam results were the highest ever, with 96% of our students receiving a passing grade (3, 4, or 5.) This past year saw the most AP students and tests taken in the history of St. Xavier.

The St. Xavier Ignatian Summit is a biennial event to engage our students in a common topic. This coming February, in reference to the Pope’s Environmental Encyclical “Laudato Si’,” the theme will focus on the environment Our Home, Our Planet, Our Responsibility.
Ignatian Summits occur at a variety of Jesuit High Schools and serve as an opportunity through which students are asked to reflect on how their faith calls them to respond to a complicated world. The Pope says, “All of us can cooperate as instruments of God for the care of creation, each according to his or her own culture, experience, involvements and talents.” The Ignatian Summit is one way in which St. Xavier seeks to fulfill the Jesuit mission of “providing students with the intellectual, moral and spiritual formation that will enable them to make a commitment to service – that will make them agents of change.” The St. Xavier Ignatian Summit is an intellectual forum that goes beyond the academic requirements for a high school and inspires students for a lifetime. The week-long event is planned by a group of faculty and staff members. “The Ignatian Summit at St. Xavier High School brings the outside world to our students and hopefully inspires them to change the world,” said Matt Kemper, Director of Community Service, who is spearheading the committee. “By exposing students to various experts in their field, we hope to educate and transform our young men to go forth and live justly, as Jesus did.” Ignatian Summits occur at a variety of Jesuit High Schools and serve as an opportunity through which students are asked to reflect on how their faith calls them to respond to a complicated world. Ultimately, St. Xavier hopes to graduate young men who will one day positively influence real change in policy, procedure, and the world in which we live.

Thanks to the St. Xavier Advancement Department, speakers were secured to bring the theme to life. The week will kick off with keynote speaker Mr. Michael (Nick) Nichols. Nick is regarded as one of the world’s best wildlife photographers for his work with the National Geographic Society. On Wednesday of that week students will begin the day with Mass for Ash Wednesday and spend the rest of the day in Ignatian Summit workshops. More than 30 speakers will present on a variety of environmental topics. Two of the primary speakers are David Quammen ‘66, a National Geographic writer and author of many other books as well as Thane Maynard, Director of the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden. “The speakers are storytellers who look at not only wildlife, but how the environment and ecosystems in a particular area can impact the culture and sustainability of its resources,” said Missy Tranter, Director of the Annual Fund. “They are able to see the many different perspectives on an environmental issue and help deliver their observations/facts to the public.” Currently, Darlene and Jeffrey Anderson, Charlene and Bob Shaw and Richard and Nydia Tranter have contributed to help underwrite the majority of the cost of the St. Xavier Ignatian Summit this year. It is the goal to secure three or four more co-chairs to help underwrite the February event. In the future, the school hopes to establish an endowment for the St. Xavier Ignatian Summit. This would allow for this exceptional education program to continue in perpetuity, and will help secure the best speakers possible for our students.

Look at all the names listed in this honor roll magazine. There are stories like Joe and Dottie’s woven all throughout those pages. We are so blessed to have the support from so many. “Because it is what the Long Blue Line is all about.” “Because we can.” “Because we need to make a difference in somebody’s life.” I attribute the aforementioned quotes to Joe and Dottie Kuhr. I was fortunate to spend some time with the two of them at their home. Let me tell you a little about them, knowing that these few words will not do them justice. Married now 52 years, (they chuckled that I was a novice when I mentioned I would be celebrating my 30th wedding anniversary this year), Joe and Dottie grew up on the west side of Cincinnati. They moved to just outside of Louisville, Kentucky 30 years ago. Their combined personality is contagious. I don’t think you can find two more positive, fun loving people. Joe went to grade school at Resurrection. Dottie attended St. Aloysius and then Our Lady of the Visitation. Dottie jokes that Visitation was out in the middle of nowhere back then. Joe graduated from St. X in 1959. They came from families that made them work hard. Joe had to work to pay his $175 tuition to St. X. Joe and Dottie had to work hard together to send Dottie back to Mt. St. Joseph to get her college degree. Joe has wonderful mischievousness about him.
I would have enjoyed going to school with him. Sometimes that mischievousness cause a little heartache at school. When asked who made an impact on him while at St. X, without hesitation, he says Fr. William Fay SJ. Fr. Fay, a teacher and administrator at St. X from 1950 to 1962, gave him a second chance, as he says, and really woke him up and instilled discipline. Joe says it was at St. X where he learned that there were other ways to look at things. There were other ways to get things done. There was creativity of thought.
X grad and faculty member Paul Rieselman, “what happens at St. X is an expensive endeavor, but it is an endeavor that is so worthwhile.” Thank you all for making what happens at St. X possible. We stand on your shoulders. By the way, Joe and Dottie are the proud parents of three children. They love spoiling their 10 grandchildren. Walking away from their home I could not help but feel a little spoiled because I was so fortunate to spend some time with them. When I grow up, if I ever really do, I want to be like Joe and Dottie Kuhr.
Joe and Dottie have supported St. X consistently now for more than 35 years. That gets us back to those quotes above. They make the drive up to Cincinnati from Louisville each year to meet with the student that their support helps. As Joe said, “You meet someone and you want to make a difference in their lives.” Look at all the names listed in this honor roll magazine. Financial Report Our vision is very simply stated, and a major driver in our strategic plan. At St. Xavier High School, a Catholic school in the Jesuit tradition, we are committed to being the rigorous college preparatory school in greater Cincinnati. The school where exceptional boys from diverse backgrounds transform into academically accomplished Men for Others. Young men who are prepared to discern and successfully carry out God’s plan for their lives and to serve as leaders in our rapidly changing world.
High School has that opportunity, regardless of his economic ability to pay tuition. This year we will provide more than $4.1 million in need based financial aid to 42 percent of our student body. That is tuition assistance for 615 young men and their families. That does not include the $1,000 gap between the cost to educate and the actual tuition for every student. You can see the continuing increase in financial aid need graphed below. All of the tuition assis tance granted each year to our students
is hard-funded. While this is an expensive endeavor, it is necessary for the students of St. X. Thank you for your support. Your investment helps us to continue our very important mission of providing the opportunity for our students to receive a Jesuit education. Their spiritual and academic formation will help them to become Men for Others just like previous generations of the Long Blue Line.
This vision, and our mission, is the driving force for everything we do at St. X. That same vision and mission are important to our alumni, parents and friends of the school. This is evident as you look at the extensive list of donors in this magazine. To remain true to our Ignatian mission, we need to be sure that any academically qualified young man who wants to attend St. Xavier

Tennis Court Expansion Special Projects Update: St. Xavier Tennis Courts During the summer months, St. Xavier High School saw a program upgrade for the Tennis Program. After more than a nine-month advancement effort to secure funding for the project, twelve new tennis courts were added to campus. The impact of this project is significant. For years our student athletes in the tennis program were asked to practice away from St. Xavier. The players were getting together in groups and driving around looking for places to practice each day. Sometimes they would find courts and sometimes they wouldn’t be able to find an open court. “This has been a long-time need,” said John Sullivan, Athletic Director. “Our student athletes

have been traveling the city to find practice space and it is long-overdue to offer them the opportunity to practice at home.” Now this storied program will have a permanent facility to practice and enough courts to host home tournaments as well as summer camps. More than $650,000 of the $700,000 cost for the project was raised by individual court sponsorships and from benefactors that support the program. A big thank you goes out to all the supporters of the Tennis Program who made this project possible.
Our student athletes have been traveling the city to find practice space and it is long-overdue to offer them the opportunity to practice at home.
Makerspace Making an Impact The Library Goes Under Dramatic Transformation to Add New Makerspace Pictured are student projects using CAD software to design and then the CNC router to cut the wood to make wooden plaques showing their St. Xavier pride.
Big changes took place over the summer at St. Xavier High School! Our librarian’s office was extended and repurposed as a Makerspace where students can create works of art with 3-D modeling and more. To enable this Makerspace the library was remodeled to maximize seating for the students, new shades added to cut down on lighting issues and the Library staff was relocated to the other side of the Library and now serve as a one-stop help/ circulation desk that responds to questions about both traditional media and digital technology. This was more than just a typical construction project at St. Xavier, because it has involved many different departments of our school—IT, library, art, science, computer science, engineering, administration, maintenance and more—who came together to work passionately on this common project. One of those people to work on the project has a special tie to the Makerspace. 3D modeling and printing. He told us, “In 2016, my son Eli had his second open-heart surgery. In our pre-surgical consult, the surgeon, upon discovering my job in technology, spent fifteen minutes passionately describing how 3D printing had completely changed cardiothoracic surgery. He showed me models of 3D hearts and discussed how Children’s was using 3D printing to print the hearts of the most complex patients. This allowed the surgeons to “practice” their cuts in advance, ultimately leading to better results and less time on bypass for the patient.” He described the Makerspace and its potential for our students stating, “The goal of our Makerspace is to provide a space that challenges students to use their minds to solve problems that might not yet exist. Using the innovative technologies, the students can take an idea from inception through the design and creation phase. In our Makerspace, students have 3D printers, a laser cutter, a CNC router and many microprocessors at their disposal.” He continued, “If you peer into our Makerspace during flex, it might seem like chaos. Students are hovered over the computers, workbenches and printers, actively working on their projects. It’s loud, noisy and filled with energy. However, Makerspaces are built on the constructivist theory, which places
emphasis on hands-on learning through building and creating. Learning how to use the equipment and the programs is as much the focus as is the end result; failure is encouraged. There is a strong spirit of collaboration as the students rely on each other to use the programs and the machines.” You can definitely hear the passion Jim has for our students and the possibilities this new Makerspace brings with it. Our description of the Makerspace would not be complete without introducing Kenny Mumfrey, who is new to St. Xavier the master of the Makerspace. Kenny is a veteran of the United States Army and served four tours of duty: two in Iraq and two in Afghanistan. Kenny instructs the students on how to use the equipment and ensures their projects are on point from start to finish. He has been very busy since 300 students signed up for the first day the Makerspace was ready! Overall, both the new Library and Makerspace have been a huge success. Students are packing both areas and learning new skills daily. Thank you to the many people and departments at St. Xavier who made this transformation of space possible for our students! Fall 2017

St. X National Alumni Chapter Network Members of the Houston chapter have dinner with Fr. Howe and Coach Steve Specht.
St. Xavier alumni chapters have been started all over the country! From the East Coast to the West Coast you can find members of the Long Blue Line with which to connect, network and share memories of St. Xavier High School! Chapters in Boston, Los Angeles, Raleigh, St. Louis, Dallas, Houston, Indianapolis, Phoenix and Washington DC—to name just a few— regularly get together for events like Golf Outings, National Bomber Football Night in America and even service events. New chapters are forming regularly including new Denver and Austin/San Antonio chapters. A great example of Alumni Chapter fun has been the National Bomber Football Nights! On September 29 nine chapters—including Phoenix, Columbus, North and South Houston, Dallas, Boston, St. Louis, Seattle and Austin/San Antonio —watched the defending State Champion Bombers battle the Elder Panthers via live stream and some even were able to have a taste of the Tristate with Skyline chili being served! This was the fourth year for this event and more chapters are expected to participate next year.
One of the most engaged and active chapters is the Indianapolis chapter. Their chapter activities include having pre-game tailgates before St. Xavier vs. Cathedral Football games, Reds Game Outings and Mass/Breakfast meetings. But their latest activity as an Alumni Chapter shows their commitment to the Men for Others spirit of St. Xavier High school. They’ve decided to establish a Loyola Club Student Scholarship from the Indianapolis Alumni Chapter. The Indianapolis Chapter steering committee’s goal is to fund a full scholarship for a student for all four years. They currently have raised $6,000 of their goal. Tom Chastang ’73 says of the Indianapolis chapter scholarship, “I really like the idea of the Indianapolis Alumni Chapter sponsoring a student for the next four years. I’m confident that this will be a successful venture and I hope that other chapters around the country will pick up on the idea.”
Another chapter looking to continue the Jesuit service ideal is the new Austin/San Antonio chapter. They are currently working on a Family Service Day event where chapter members and their families volunteer together. St. Xavier is proud of all the Alumni Chapters and their support of St. Xavier High School! Are you interested in starting an Alumni Chapter in your city? There are a few requirements to start a new St. Xavier alumni chapter—around 100 alumni who would like to participate in activities and 4 to 6 alumni who would like to be the steering committee or leaders of the chapter. Steve and his family were even featured on Good Morning America on November 11, 2016 after he had left 190 Hershey kisses for his son to count down the days until he returned from Kuwait deployment.
’99 St. X’s Oscar winner Patrick Osborne presented at the Marketing Innovation Day at Ford’s corporate headquarters in July. The theme of the event was “story telling.” Patrick was invited to speak by fellow Bomber, Brad Jaeger ’07, who is a Marketing Manager at Ford. 1. While in Montreal for the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Canada, Matthew Green ’03 realized he was on Rue Saint François Xavier. 2. Cousins Jackson Donaldson ’15 and Austin Briggs ’17 hiked Inspiration Point near Jenny Lake in the Grand Tetons. 3. Brandon Cook ’14 took a two week hiking trip to Yosemite National Park in California. One of the hikes was to the top of a peak called “Half-Dome”, a 20 mile hike that climbs 4,800 feet in elevation to the top. 4. Joe Evers ’18 and dad, Ed Evers ’79 visited Western Montana this summer and ran across an interesting Jesuit connection in the town of St. Ignatius, MT. The Jesuits founded a mission there for the Flathead Indians in the1850’s and the town was created afterwards. 5. Dan Cahill ’85 and Adam Coomes ’93 climbed to the summit of Mount Rainier in Washington State in June 2016. 6. Jack ’17 and Ted ’19 Cordonnier enjoyed a 2 week family vacation to Alaska hiking, fishing for salmon and halibut and visiting 3 national parks, displaying their Bomber pride along the way. 7.
