ach and every fall as I sit down to write this letter, I spend time looking back over the past year. I look back to review the many things I am thankful for, not only in my own personal life but also in my role as President of St. Xavier High School. St. Ignatius of Loyola considered gratitude so important that he made it the first point of the Examen. He concludes the Spiritual Exercises inviting us to pray for “internal knowledge of the

Mission Trips Put Men for Others in Action

This summer many st. X seniors seized the opportunity to work on mission Trips. Trips to New Orleans, Camden, rosebud indian reservation, Northern Kentucky tornado relief, Chicago, Glenmary Farm, Over-The-rhine, and in other countries like Peru and ecuador encourage leadership, compassion, caring and understanding. mr. matt Kemper (’91), Director of Community service said, “mission Trips are about creating formative experiences where students can live out our motto of ‘men For Others.’ These immersion experiences offer the opportunity for students to be with poor and marginalized people in a genuine manner. students are touched by their work on the trips. ideally, our young men develop a deeper level of empathy with those in need.” Bombers taking part in the summer mission Trips led projects, worked with older adults, played with young children and used their hands to make a difference. This group will share the wisdom, compassion and leadership they gained during the upcoming school year. For more information on the mission Trips and other community service at st. PRINCIPAL’S

MESSAGE BY BILL SANdQUIST

W

ith Dave mueller’s departure from st. Xavier over the summer, Fr. howe called to ask me to assume the position of Principal for one year. it was a bit of a tough decision, you see, because in my mind my plane was landing. i had already announced that 2012-13 would be my last year at st. Xavier, and this was not the way the story was scripted to end in my mind. i had been serving as the assistant Principal for academics for the last 18 years, and one more year at a job with which i had familiarity was the “planned” way to end my career. after praying, talking to my family, and talking to Fr. howe and Dave, i decided to accept. sort of a touch-and-go landing, i guess, and now i serve as the interim Principal, allowing the school ample time to find a Principal for the future. having lived in rome, italy from 1963 to 1966, i could not help recalling that Pope John XXiii was reported to have been an interim Pope, a stopgap in the Papacy, one who would keep things together for a short period and give the Church time to settle on a more longterm Pope, and look at what occurred under his leadership: the second vatican Council. i am not suggesting that i have something of like magnitude in my arsenal for the school. my plan is to lead the school in its relentless pursuit of scholarship and servant leadership, as it always has. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the opening of the

second vatican Council, Pope Benedict Xvi has declared this year from October 11, 2012 to November 24, 2013 as a Year of Faith. in the words of the holy Father, “it will be a moment of grace and commitment to a more complete conversion to God, to strengthen our faith in him and proclaim him with joy to the people of our time.” When you walk through the main door of st. Xavier, one of the first things you will see is a sign which reads: “Be it known to all who enter here that Christ is the reason for this school. He is the unseen but ever present teacher in its classes. He is the model of its faculty and the inspiration of its teachers.” While all of the faculty and staff are in support of that vision, there are departments who have particular responsibilities in that regard. The Religious Education Department passes on the beliefs and traditions of our faith through comprehensive classroom instruction, while working at the same time to form men who are inflamed with love of God and of all God’s creation. Campus Ministry provides opportunities for growth in faith through sacramental celebrations of the eucharist and reconciliation and through other school-wide prayer opportunities. in addition to an optional daily mass, class masses have been added to the schedule in the last two years to bring a targeted focus to the celebration of eucharist. There are retreat programs for all years: Freshman house retreats, sophomore

Knight Watch, Junior retreats at milford, and Kairos retreats for our seniors. in an attempt to meet students where they are, Campus ministry has also launched a program which is called “Contemplatives in action.” This program links a chaplain to a sport or other activity to bring a faith dimension to the activity. lastly Community Service delivers the clear message that men of faith are men concerned about all human beings, with a special commitment to the less fortunate in our society. Weekly mission collections, the famed advent canned-food drive, mission trips for juniors, and a multitude of after-school programs and weekend events attest to the strength of the service program. as i push the throttle forward and guide st. Xavier through this transition year, i am reminded that your support is clearly a response to join in the ministry that is st. Xavier, and for that we are very grateful.

“Now I serve as the Interim Principal, allowing the school ample time to find a Principal for the future.” FALL/WINTEr 2012

Bill is part of the st. Xavier high school long Blue line. his father graduated from st. X in 1930. his uncles, three brothers and his three sons, Charles (’07), Patrick (’11) and Joe (’13) are Bombers as well. Dr. Barrett’s father, Charles m. Barrett (’30) was a radiologist who specialized in both diagnostic and therapeutic radiation for cancer. he had a dream to bring all the specialties in the area of cancer treatment and research together under one roof. he saw the Barrett Center open in January 1989 before passing away from cancer himself in may of the same year. his son was there to take the reins to see his father’s ideas come to fruition. The university of Cincinnati Barrett Cancer Center at university hospital is an integral part of cancer care at uC. The uC Barrett Center is a unique facility offering screening, diagnosis and treatment for all types of cancer at one central, convenient location. The center has a long-standing reputation for providing the most advanced cancer services available in the region. Within the academic setting, the center provides care for those with a more complicated diagnosis, and brings together academics within the university of Cincinnati as well as those doctors with specific expertise in their area. “The city of Cincinnati is blessed to have great hospitals and great oncologists,” said Dr. Barrett. “The goal of the center is to be a resource for the whole community to offer second opinions and reassurance to those with cancer.”

Dr. Barrett’s specialty is radiation oncology and he oversees nine faculty, eight residents and a number of other team members as well as coordinating care between specialties and oversees the nurses, therapists and receptionists at the center to provide the highest quality care to each and every patient that walks through the doors. Walking the halls with Dr. Barrett was evidence enough to see that he values each and every employee that works for the Barrett Center. This team-centered focus is how Dr. Barrett believes a team can come together to beat cancer. “While i was a student at st. Xavier high school i learned the importance of an unselfish attitude, the importance of a strong organization and what it truly means to be a man for Others,” said Barrett. Dr. Barrett believes that in a strong organization, people do more than they have to so success is eminent. everyone at The Barrett Cancer Center has a part in the superb care of each patient and no job is too big or too small. “People here are always asking why and what can we do to get better,” said Barrett. This atmosphere encourages everyone to become smarter and learn more each day. The research infrastructure surrounding the center is what makes it one of the most successful in the region. “The other facilities and physicians in the city are not the competition, the competition is the disease,” said Barrett. “Working together to beat the disease is what is most important and anything that contributes to a good outcome for someone who has cancer is success for us.” The Barrett Center offers education, cancer-centered programming and acts as an education resource to the community as well. Tom young (’57), moderator for the Prostate Cancer Networking Group under the Cancer support Community, and cancer survivor, has worked with the Center and Dr. Barrett to advocate for screenings, provide education and support for those in the community. young said, “as moderator of the PCNG with more than 300 men who have dealt with prostate cancer, we have found Dr. Barrett and the Barrett Cancer Center to be an integral part of the education and treatment options for men considering radiation as a treatment for their disease.” after seeing 70 patients in a day, it is hard to believe that Bill Barrett has any time at all for anything else but work. Barrett played offensive guard at st. X and walked on the football team at virginia. in his free time, he uses these skills to coach football for the Cougars—a grade-school team comprised of Cardinal Pacelli, st. mary’s, st. Francis Desales and st. ursula villa students. Throughout the city more than 25 former Cougars are on varsity football rosters this year and 16 are playing for st. Xavier high school. he currently has no children on the team but believes that giving back brings just as much joy to him as it does to the young men he coaches. “Trying to help people with cancer is obviously very serious work and coaching kids provides a wonderful outlet,” said Barrett. Truly living the magis and giving back, Dr. Bill Barrett is putting all he learned from st. Xavier high school to work for others in his community and beyond.

VICE PRESIDENT

FOR DEVELOPMENT’S

MESSAGE BY rALPh A. NArdINI (’77)

i

think my favorite time of year has to be the beginning of the school year. i enjoy walking the halls the first few days of school, and especially enjoy being in the main hall during the change of classes. The freshmen are obvious to everyone and stand out because of the look on their faces as they try and remember where they need to be. inevitably, i will come across a few who will be in a panic and ask me for directions to their next class, because they don’t want to be late and get that first “JuG”. i feel good about the leadership i see from the upperclassmen. They take these freshmen under their wing and make sure the new “kids” find their way. i don’t see them harassing or making fun of the new members of our st. X community even when they appear lost and confused. in fact, leadership is something our seniors see and experience from our faculty and staff and expect from themselves. That expectation, the leadership our seniors demonstrate, the expectation they have for themselves, is why i find each day so fulfilling. in fact, that is why i consider what i do a mission and not just a job. i want to be sure that the young men who come to st. Xavier high school

have the opportunity to not only benefit academically from a Jesuit education, but also understand that they are obligated to be leaders and men for others. This transformation of young students who think mainly of themselves to young men who are taught to think critically and see God in others is why st. X is considered one of the best schools in the country. as you read further in this issue of the magazine you will be presented with our newest strategic plan. This plan came from more than a year of collaboration and work from all of the various constituencies of st. Xavier high school. The vision presented in this plan assures our alumni, parents, students and friends that we are committed to staying in the forefront of Jesuit education and ignatian spirituality. The faculty, staff and administration at st. X are as committed as ever to making sure our students leave us prepared academically for their future and with a deeper and closer relationship with God. as we move forward and strive for the magis with our new strategic vision i want the st. Xavier long Blue line to know that we need your continued, and even enhanced, support. Thank you for all you do and

for your investment in the future of the fine young men of st. Xavier high school. Our students learn by example from what they see daily in our faculty and staff and from the example you set with your philanthropic support of our mission. st. Xavier high school is more than bricks and mortar. you know that and so do we. That is why our students continue to stand on the shoulders of those who have come before them, and why together, we will continue to educate our future community leaders as selfless “men for others”.

“As we move forward and strive for the magis with our new strategic vision, I want the St. Xavier Long Blue Line to know that we need your continued, and even enhanced, support.” FALL/WINTEr 2012

t. Xavier high school continues to look for ways to improve and enhance the spiritual and academic formation of our students. everything we do, every decision we make, is prefaced by the question “how will this help us fulfill our mission. We are leaders in secondary education and st. X remains committed to the ignatian spirituality that makes us different. as you can see by the accompanying graphs and charts, st. Xavier high school remains financially strong. We strive to keep our tuition increases as reasonable as possible while increasing outside support from alumni, parents and friends of the school. Our goal is to be good stewards of your support while continuing to enhance our academic and spiritual programs. Our biggest challenge is the need for financial aid. This year 33% of our student body qualified for, and was awarded, $2,900,000 in need based financial aid. The graph to the right shows the growth of our financial aid awarded each year. The needs continue to grow and we are committed to providing this need based tuition assistance to any young man academically qualified to attend st. X. st. Xavier high school does have approximately $21m in bond debt remaining from our initial borrowing of $25m in 2003. a plan to repay has been in place from the beginning and we are on schedule to retire the bond in 16 years. Thank you for helping us to continue our very critical and important mission. Thank you for investing in the futures of the fine young men who will receive a quality Jesuit education at st. Xavier high school.

ather Timothy Howe, S.J. came to St. Xavier High School as President more than three years ago. With him, he brought his background as an educator—first as a Spanish teacher at St. X in the mid-1990s and then at St. Procopius Elementary School in Chicago. Father Howe, together with the Board of Trustees, members of the faculty, staff, parents, alumni and students, worked energetically throughout the past year to articulate a vision for the future of St. Xavier High School. This vision has culminated in The St. Xavier High School Strategic Plan, For the Greater Good. The strategic plan gives the leaders of St. X a road map for the school to follow as we move forward and continue excelling as one of the finest schools in the country. The planning committee was guided by John Kucia, administrative vice president at Xavier University, and chaired by trustee Bill Mulvihill (’65) and past trustee Tim Schroeder (’75). More than 52 individuals and five committees participated in the process, looking at all facets of the school from academics to faith to finance. This representative group of constituencies worked diligently to design the St. Xavier High School of the next five to seven years, building on the great traditions of the past. “The two central themes I see in this plan are learning-centered and relationships matter,” said Mulvihill, co-chair of the strategic plan committee. “Planning for the future will guarantee that St. Xavier High School continues to produce young men that are leaders in the community, serving others in the spirit of St. Ignatius. The strategic plan guides St. X down the road toward a brilliant future.”

The opposite page presents the goals and objectives of the strategic plan. The first goal is to establish a learningcentered culture where our students actively participate in creating their own knowledge. Students learn in very different ways and there are numerous avenues to reach them. “Success is not defined by one aspect of a young man’s life,” said Schroeder, co-chair of the strategic plan committee. “Success is when our young men find meaning and purpose in their lives and this plan guides our students to do this in the name of God.” At the same time, the plan seeks to help our students better develop their relationship with others and with God, using the tools of Ignatian spirituality. “It was important to me to create a plan that focused on our students,” said Fr. Howe, “putting them on a path of lifelong learning and ever-deepening relationship with God and with others.” The St. Xavier High School Strategic Plan will be shared as widely as possible over the next few months with alumni, parents, families and friends; so that all the members of our community understand the direction the school is headed. The help and support of all close to St. X is vital, as we move forward with the implementation of this plan. A big thank-you goes out to everyone involved with the planning process. Without the dedication of this group, and the input of many others that make up our St. Xavier community, the end result would not have been possible. St. Xavier High School is a community, a community that is committed to advancing the school and helping our students to be the finest men of their generation.

St. Xavier High School Mission: To assist young men in their formation as leaders and men for others through rigorous college preparation in the Jesuit tradition. St. Xavier High Vision: At St. Xavier High School, a Catholic school in the Jesuit tradition, we are committed to being the rigorous college preparatory school in greater Cincinnati where exceptional boys from diverse backgrounds transform into academically accomplished men for others who are prepared to discern and successfully carry out God’s plan for their lives and to serve as leaders in our rapidly changing world. Fundamental Aspirations Establish a learning-centered culture, deepen relationships, grow in faith, attract the best students from diverse backgrounds, communicate the brand and obtain new resources to achieve the Mission and the strategic Vision. LEARNING-CENTERED GOAL 1: Establish a learning-centered culture that serves all of our students. • Move from a teaching-centered culture to a learning-centered culture that recognizes students as active learners engaged in critical thinking, problem solving, communication, innovation, and growth in multicultural competence. • Increase student improvement over time on standardized test scores and on schoolwide and classroom-level measurements of achievement in the concepts and skills most critical for college preparation. • Develop additional programs and strategies for gifted students to extend learning gains within this group. RELATIONSHIPS GOAL 2: Deepen relationships between students and educators, among students—especially between underclassmen and upperclassman mentors—and among different ethnic groups on campus. By this means, improve student growth in all areas of the Graduate at Graduation. • See that each student experiences true cura personalis from at least one educator as role model, advocate and guide towards the ideals of the Graduate at Graduation and development of individual leadership potential.

• Foster strong personal relationships among

students from diverse backgrounds and cultivate multi-cultural competence. • Deepen relationships among students by developing new initiatives for existing homeroom and mentoring programs. GROw IN FAITH GOAL 3: Foster greater growth in faith and relationship with God throughout the St. Xavier High School community. Broaden and deepen opportunities for spiritual growth, for community service, and for understanding Ignatian Spirituality as rooted in the Spiritual Exercises. • Develop new programs and assess and modify existing activities to help St. Xavier students develop a healthy, growing relationship with God. • Strengthen and expand current programs that instill Ignatian spirituality in the students at St. Xavier High School. • Expand and promote multiple opportunities for faculty, staff, administrators, parents, board members and alumni to complete the Spiritual Exercises and participate in other Ignatian Spirituality programs. • Promote and develop St. Xavier High School’s relationship with the larger Church as a servant of the larger apostolic mission.

STUDENTS: BRIGHTEST / DIVERSE GOAL 4: Attract, develop and retain the best and brightest students from diverse backgrounds who have the desire to be formed in a rigorous, Ignatian educational experience. • Purposefully recruit and enroll the most academically accomplished candidates. • Promote greater socio-economic and geographic diversity by developing and successfully implementing policies and targeted marketing plans directed to these audiences. • Position St. Xavier as a destination school for multi-cultural and international families and all those interested in interacting with people from diverse backgrounds. BRAND GOAL 5: Develop and communicate the St. Xavier High School brand that includes its promise, positioning, character and attributes. • Communicate the St. Xavier brand identity to all stakeholders, including prospective students and their parents. NEw RESOURCES GOAL 6: Acquire and sustain the appropriate physical and financial resources needed to effectively carry forward the Mission and achieve the Vision of St. Xavier High School. • Develop a campus master plan which would repurpose existing space and provide the IT infrastructure necessary to support the learning-centered approach on a landmark campus. • Embark on a comprehensive campaign to support our Mission and the strategic initiatives outlined in this plan.

Faculty Q & A Paul Rieselman is an alum from the class of 1971. He is known at St. X as a Teacher, football, lacrosse, soccer, basketball and Something Blue team Chaplain, and an incoming freshman Study Skills Teacher. His best memories at St. X are those when he witnesses “breakthrough moments” that a boy experiences when he chooses to see something or someone differently than he had before. He has been teaching at St. X since 1989. ST. X: what are some of the more notable differences/similarities between St. X in 2012 and St. X in 1971 when you were a student? PR: A challenging environment has

always been one of the hallmarks of Jesuit education. A boy who faces challenge grows; no challenge, no growth. St. Xavier has always been blessed with parents, trustees, administrators and faculty who have dedicated themselves in the fostering of an appropriately challenging experience wherein a boy can find his intelligence, creativity, his resilience, his capacity to love, his faith. I remember as a young boy in my junior year being challenged by Karl Hauck to consider becoming a Big Brother to a boy at St. Al’s Orphanage. The discoveries I made about myself were life changing. I believe it was at St. Al’s that I “found the teacher” in me. Thanks

Karl. The St. Xavier of 2012 still seeks to introduce a boy to his best stuff. The real difference now is that we have created so many more opportunities in which these challenges are offered and personal discoveries are made. I can quickly think of a couple such examples. One that I am especially proud of is the evolution of the fine arts at St. Xavier. The band is awesome for a huge number of our kids. Drum Corps? Strings? Jazz Band? Awesome. Committed. Professional. TX is the “Captor of the Cappie” because our kids work unbelievably hard to hone their skills. Did you see Les Mis? Even larger numbers of boys find “the artist within” because our art department is stellar. I am often astounded by what our kids create. I think they are as well. The St. Xavier Choir has welcomed hundreds of boys. Those boys are not just learning to sing beautifully. They are constantly challenged to live the songs that they sing. The diversity of our student body is certainly not what it once was. We have wised up to the larger make-up of the world and have intentionally sought inclusion of the wider community. Painful mistakes of the past have found their way to joyful success stories in the many kids whose inclusion to St. Xavier has been a blessing upon all of us. God is good. There are many more significant areas where St. X has “answered the call” over the years. I just named a few of my favorites.

ST. X: you have been a faculty member since 1989. what is it about St. X that keeps you here and so engaged at so many levels? PR: The kid in front of me. I see more

16

than a kid just trying to find his way to the next step. I see our students as young men who want to make a difference in the world. I see kids who long to have huge lives. They want to use their gifts; they want to be part of something bigger than themselves. Ignatius called it Magis.

Paul Rieselman (’71) We have a chance to influence how a boy connects his life to the world around him. That keeps me wide awake each day.

ST. X: Please tell our readers about your role as team chaplain. PR: I am so proud of St. Xavier Athletics.

We have coaches that know the sport they coach. We have coaches who love the kids they coach. They use their sport to teach kids lessons that will serve them a lifetime. They use their sport to teach kids how to love each other. You cannot imagine the privilege it has been for me to be invited into what the coaches and the players create through week after week of grueling practice and seemingly endless sacrifice. My role in this is small and it is a role that I share with many other talented folks who simply offer a few moments of reflection, encouragement, challenge and prayer in each weekly “chapel visit”.

ST. X: you were featured a couple years back on videos talking about why our alumni and friends should support the efforts financially here at St. X. you have supported St. X with your time, talents and treasures. why? PR: I am unabashed in asking folks

to support us with their time, talent and treasure. If we do our job right at St. X then we are sending confident, intellectually capable, caring, generous young men into a world that needs confident, intellectually capable, caring, generous young men. It is what Jesus asks us to do. Such “missioning” is at the core of the Gospel. I also believe that folks WANT to be partners in the meaningful, life giving endeavor that St. Xavier has embraced since 1831 and continues to embrace every day. Generosity always uncovers a seemingly endless grace. Our alumni are remarkably generous. I pray that their generosity continually uncovers a seemingly endless grace.

ST. X: The St. Xavier Advantage—what is it to you? PR: The rich tradition of Jesuit education

is a real advantage for St. Xavier. We know who we are. We are clear as to the mission that drives our work. We are deeply reflective upon our practice as educators. We are always getting better.

Young Alumni Committee Q & A ST. X: why did you think it was important to create the young Alumni Committee? wEIDNER: When I was driving in for my

first meeting I realized just how much I missed St. X. It was such a big part of who we all have become and I think it is important we give back to future generations. This group is all about engaging younger alumni with activities they enjoy and making it easy for them to give back to the school. The Golf Outing and Personal Hygiene Drive do just that. BERNING: Right after college I started attending First Friday and going back to football games, but I was not a board member or parent, so there was a huge void on how I could get involved and make a difference at St. X. This group offers me the opportunity to give back, not just with my money but with my time as well. SCHEPER: I wanted to get involved to help guys in this age group continue to stay engaged with St. X whether it is through community service or events, this group of alumni in the Long Blue Line have a lot to offer the future of St. Xavier High School. ST. X: what impact do you hope the young Alumni Committee has on St. Xavier? wEIDNER: We are ultimately graduates that are earmarked as the entitled generation, but it doesn’t mean we need to buy into that stereotype. This group of alumni is ready to prove that we are ready to take the reins and continue the rich traditions that make St. Xavier High School one of the finest high schools in the country.

n THE yOUNG ALUMNI COMMITTEE

CHAIR: John Schrantz (’96) CO-CHAIR: Jason Wittekind (’99) MEMBERS: Jonathon bennie (’00), Michael berning (’05), Joshua Williams (’02), Jordan Weidner (’02), brian Murphy (’97), Jon McEvoy (’01), blake Estes (’03), Jeff Scheper (’03), Eric Fehr (’02), David Hall (’07), and Alex Ewing (’01).

Jordan weidner (’02), Michael Berning (’05), and Jeff Scheper (’03) members of the young Alumni Committee.

In 2010 the St. Xavier Young Alumni Committee was created to serve as a resource for the development department and alumni functions of the school. The continuing purpose of the committee is to assist in engaging, re-connecting and interacting with recent graduates (between 5 and 15 years) of St. Xavier and strengthening their relationship with each other and the community. The committee also provides input on young alumni development strategies, events and general counsel in helping facilitate the requests of this very talented generation of St. Xavier Alumni. Jordan Weidner (’02), Michael Berning (’05), Jeff Scheper (’03) and Alumni Director, John Schrantz (’96) sat down to talk about this new committee at St. X. BERNING: It is pretty powerful when

you get a group of young professionals together and watch how they approach their own age-group. We continue to think of activities that apply to the guys to keep them engaged with the school. SCHEPER: This group gives young alumni the opportunity to fill the gap between when you graduate and before your first born son becomes a Bomber. If you are a legacy, your experience was better than your fathers’ and his was better than the generation before him. It is our job to continue to help St. X move forward for future generations. ST. X: How was the First Annual young Alumni Golf Outing? BERNING: It was a great event. We will continue to choose activities that

apply to the masses. That’s the best way to continue to grow the impact of what this group of alumni has the potential to offer St. Xavier High School. SCHRANTZ: I want to thank everyone that came out and participated. Everyone enjoyed the camaraderie with fellow alumni. We will continue this event through the efforts of the Young Alumni Committee and brainstorm as a group to what other events this generation of alumni would want to be involved in. I want to thank our sponsors Joe Lanni (’96) of Currito Burrito, Wellington Orthopaedic and Greg Ruther (’97) at the Sandbar and Four Entertainment Group for their support of this new event. Those contributions to St. Xavier and the alumni office help us facilitate best in class alumni events for our community. FALL/WINTER 2012

Planned Giving William Russo (‘73), partner and tax and estate planning attorney with Katz, Teller, Brant & Hild, has a long history with St. Xavier High School. After graduating in 1973, he returned during the 1980’s after his graduation from law school. He worked with the development department for a few years before becoming an official member of the Development Committee, and ultimately became its chair. Bill also served on the Board of Trustees from 1997 to 2003, and along with the rest of the Board, was responsible for the two recent building expansions at St. Xavier. In the past, he worked directly with students as one of the legal advisors to the St. X Mock Trial team. Bill’s two sons Will (’98) and Michael (’01) are also members of the Long Blue Line. His dedication to the mission of St. Xavier High School is evident as he discusses monetary gifts to the school. ST. X: what is your view of the St. Xavier Annual Fund? wR: An Annual Fund is the life blood of a giving program for any institution. At St. X, these annual gifts help to bridge the “gap” between annual tuition revenues and annual operating expenses, and the gap is real. Gifts to the annual fund directly and immediately benefit all of the current students at St. X.

18

ST. X: Explain how Planned Gifts can help an individual support an organization like St. Xavier High School. wR: First, just let me say that I hate the

term “Planned Gifts.” That implies that there are “accidental” gifts made to an organization, but no one makes a gift accidentally. People consciously make “gifts” to organizations when they decide that they no longer need the object of the gift, which could be time, money or securities, to take care of themselves or their family. If it is money or securities that they are ready to part with and they want to benefit a charity, then “planning” that gift can benefit both the donor and the charity. Hence the term “planned gifts.” The most basic “planned gift” is a bequest. A bequest is simply a gift made by a person in his or her Last Will and Testament. A bequest can be viewed as a way to endow your annual gift to St. Xavier High School. If you currently give a gift of $1,000 to St. X for the annual fund, a bequest of $20,000, which could earn 5% a year (or $1,000 a year) is a simple, but “planned” way to perpetuate your annual fund gift. As a tax and estate planning lawyer, I have the privilege of helping wealthy individuals design a number of different types of planned gifts for charities. A planning device that has recently become very prevalent due to the current low interest rate environment is a Charitable Lead Annuity Trust. Like shoes, however, one size does not fit all. This is where the St. X Development Office can help. The Office has the knowledge and the volunteers who can help any motivated individual mutually benefit St. X and his or her family.

William Russo (’75) ST. X: what Advantage did St. Xavier High School give to you? wR: The biggest advantage St. X

provided me was the confidence to think independently. My parents might have called it “rebelliousness,” but I view it as “independent thinking.” Students aren’t encouraged to think in one certain manner, but to evaluate, question and reflect. To achieve “discernment.” It’s like the old saying “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” So I guess I’m trying to say St. X taught me how to fish, which is ironic because I am more a golfer than a fisherman. Part of thinking independently is realizing that God gave us free will because He wants us to make our own decisions; He hopes we will make the right ones and choose Him, but He wants us to act freely and to understand the consequences of our actions. By training St. X students to think for themselves, to accept responsibility for their decisions, and then to help others make better decisions, St. X positively impacts the entire Greater Cincinnati Community. Helping others to make better decisions is ultimately what it means to be a “Man for Others.” It means teaching someone how to fish, rather than just giving him a fish. By contributing to the Annual Fund and engaging in planned gifts, we help St. X, and the Jesuits, continue this tradition.

ST. X: what advice do you have for other grads? wR: I would encourage all graduates to

come back and visit the campus of St. Xavier High School and re-experience the great work that occurs here each and every day. You can actually feel God’s presence in the halls. If you haven’t been back in a while, there is always an open invitation to come back for a tour. The Development Office is always willing to take you on a tour. Be warned though— they just might help you to decide to make a difference and contribute more of your time or treasures to St. Xavier High School! St. X was and remains a very special place. I am blessed to be part of it.

Student Q & A

Chris Merz (’13)

ST. X: Tell us a bit about your decision to attend St. X… CM: Even in grade school, my favorite

Senior Chris Merz (’13) is extremely busy. He is the coordinator for the Student Sports Information Directors, as well as writing the weekly football articles posted online. Chris is a co-host for the weekly web broadcast ESPX bringing news and team to cheer for was St. X. When it came information about everything St. X to the world. His passion for serving others is time to decide my high school career, it most evident in his work with Pastries for Peru and through the work he did on his became clear why St. X was my choice. My X-perience or shadow day truly made mission trip to Peru. Along with a job at LaRosa’s, Chris finds time to tutor students in the decision for me. I walked through the Spanish each week at Su Casa, plays recreational sports, serves as a Eucharistic school for the first time and everything Minister at school masses and is a member of the Student Leadership Team. seemed to feel right. All the wonderful opportunities and energy our school has called out to me and I just couldn’t refuse. The entire atmosphere of the school won me over and I am glad I chose St. X. ST. X: Can you please elaborate on your

academic experience here at St. X? CM: When it says St. X is a rigorous college preparatory school, it is correct. My academic road has been a challenge at times with the amount of work I have and trying to balance it with everything else in my life. But, every once in a while, I think back over the time and realize that all the late nights and early mornings were worth it. Not only because of the grades on my report card, but more because of the knowledge and experience I have gained with the help of teachers and friends. ST. X: Outside of the classroom you have

been very involved. Tell us a bit about your mission trip to Peru. CM: This past summer I had the opportunity to travel to Peru with 10 classmates for my mission trip. It was the best experience of my life. It was hard adjusting to life in poverty, eating rice everyday but yet still knowing I had it way better than the Peruvians. But, the smiles of the kids everyday and their energy when interacting with us was unbelievable. On TV we see ads soliciting money for people around the world by showing distant blank faces, but my experience of poverty was not that and yet even more gripping and saddening. How people can have so little and be so happy is almost unrealistic especially if possessions make us happy. I can’t even explain everything but I would jump back there in a heartbeat.

ST. X: you are a featured guest host on ESPX. How did you get to that position and become involved with the studentbroadcasting club? CM: Sophomore year I was looking for more ways to get involved at St. X. I always loved sports, but I am not quite good enough to make our teams. At the urging of my parents, I contacted Mr. Schad about the broadcasting club. That year I was able to start working the basketball games by either filming or sometimes getting to be on the call. Junior year I continued through the basketball season and now I wear a microphone for most of the basketball games. In the spring, Mr. Schad asked me and senior leader Rich Hidy if we wanted to start a sort of weekly sports show on St. X. My broadcasting career took off from there and I was able to be on-air a couple times last year as we brought information to the website on everything St. X. Once again this year, I am lucky enough to co-host ESPX.

ST. X: you are midway thru your senior

and final year at St. X. Any words of wisdom for the class of 2016? CM: I would tell them to make sure to get involved and do something at school because those are the memories you keep. Push through the struggles, maintain academic excellence but let St. X make its mark on you and you leave a mark on St. X. The earlier you realize St. X is more than just a school, your experiences and memories will start to impact your life even more.

ST. X: you have been on kairos and have just led a kairos session… tell our readers about that experience. CM: Kairos, like Peru, is one of the things I will never forget about my time here at St. X. It is tricky to describe this four-day retreat but it is one of the most relaxing and learning experiences of my life. I truly was able to grow in so many ways with just simple things done on this retreat. My experience truly was amazing and that is the reason I applied to lead the first Kairos this year. Each Kairos is unique, but I wanted my classmates to have the same end result and feelings about Kairos I had. I know you may think I am avoiding the question but the mystery is part of the retreat—if you have attended you know, and if you ever have the opportunity to go, don’t pass it up.
