From the President For those of you who are old enough, maybe geeky enough too, our journey to the opening of the school year was reminiscent of Captain James Kirk of the USS Enterprise calling for warp speed and getting the reply, “we are giving it all we’ve got.” We have certainly gone to where no man has gone before: Opening the school year in a world of COVID-19, racism and presidential elections. Our faculty, staff, administration and 1400 students have certainly given it all they can—and it seems to be working well. The summer of 2020 will be remembered as one where auto pilot was off and our course was set week by week, with clear directives: minimize health risks and maximize the St. Xavier experience for students. A tireless task force of faculty, staff, and administrators certainly modeled what it means to be open to growth. Following the collective wisdom of that group, coupled with support from Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, TriHealth, Hamilton County Public Health and the Ohio Department of Health, we opened the school year on August 19 with options for in-person or online learning and teaching. Masks, MERV 13 filters, expansive plexiglass barriers, one-way stairways, hand sanitizer, outdoor classrooms and reconfigured lunch options were all part of what is the temporary normal. What is normal is that the students, faculty and staff went about finding the most effective and efficient ways to fulfill the mission. This place is full of amazing people who want to be here and will do what they need to do to make it happen. That impressive effort has resulted in no known cases of internal spread in the opening months! Progress on securing the mission also continues behind the scenes in many areas. We are in the final stage of preparing surveys to gather data for our next strategic plan. Plans for the Keating Natatorium refurbishing and renovation are

progressing. The Diversity web page was launched. Clubs and extra curriculars are being innovative in how to march forth safely. Theatre Xavier has generated a COVID-19 resistant strategy for the fall production of War of the Worlds. The performance will be recorded and edited as a film and shown as an in-person movie. Campus Ministry has been able to schedule retreats and even a socially distanced Mass of the Holy Spirit in the stadium. Likewise, Community Service has adapted to facilitate the growing of Men for Others. Some service programs like Big Brothers are doing a hybrid model of service while some options are totally digital. Others, like recent mission trips, are in-person. All of these opportunities to be Men for Others have been set up with social distancing and COVID protocols.
As we look to find God in everything, even in the challenges of 2020, it is easy to find His presence in the Long Blue Line. Mass of the Holy Spirit It was the perfect day for the long-standing tradition of the Mass of the Holy Spirit which is celebrated across the world at all Jesuit schools. The Mass was held at Ballaban Field to accommodate social distancing as the Class of 2024 was welcomed by the community. The Mass was celebrated by Father Matt Gamber SJ and was a team effort including many departments within the school. The Mass was live-streamed for remote students and parents. It was a memorable event for all involved and a chance to finally gather the entire St. Xavier community together.

Tech for Others Vincent Thiemann ’20 began a significant invention while he was a student at St. Xavier. For the majority of his senior year he worked to incorporate computer technology and a desire to help others into an exciting invention. He has prototyped, programmed, and built a wearable feedback device for the visually impaired that provides feedback so they can self-navigate. He first presented the invention at the Tech Olympics last school year. His team showcased the headset for three judges from Vora Ventures, Kroger Technology, and P&G. The team placed 2nd overall out of 10 schools. He has continued to develop the project while attending Case Western.

Welcome to the Class of 2024 St. Xavier kicked off the school year on August 19 welcoming the Class of 2024. This class adds 360 members to the Long Blue Line!
Theatre Xavier Fall Performance Did you know that the student broadcast team—ESPX—livestreams most home, and some away, contests in football, soccer, cross country, basketball, wrestling, swimming, volleyball, lacrosse and baseball throughout the year? This team of more than 40 students brings the

Changes Reduce Risk Each day the students are in-person is an experience the community no longer takes for granted. Many adjustments have been made to follow the CDC and Department of Health guidelines to reduce the risk for all students and staff. While many changes have been made to the environment the community and spirit remains the same. As usual, students are encouraged to use frequent and thorough hand washing as the most fundamental effort. Proper handwashing procedures have been made more fun with the introduction of popular song lyrics in the bathrooms to encourage everyone to continue good habits. A few of the physical changes made to reduce risk: •
One-way stairways at the change of class.

Plastic partitions in the cafeteria and library. The Berning gym and Reynolds rooms have been turned into study spaces for attending virtual classes if the teacher is not physically present.
•
Teachers have the ability to reserve outdoor spaces to conduct classes when weather allows.
•
Teachers and students who are quarantining or have approved need can teach and learn remotely.
•
The athletic department has enacted several new procedures to keep gear clean and only handled by its owner.
•
MASKS UP! Masks are required by every person present in the building. A variety of St. X branded masks are available in the Spirit Shop.
•
MERV 13 Filters.
•
Consistent sanitization of shared spaces and deep sanitizing every night.
As always, our students are being true Men for Others following the new guidelines to keep themselves and others safe.

Hands Across Campus Celebrates Hispanic Heritage Hands Across Campus, HAC, celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with a variety of experiences. Starting the week of September 14 students shared information pertaining to Hispanic culture to educate fellow Bombers, administration, faculty and staff to raise awareness and education. In addition, the display cases in several hallways were decorated to coincide with Hispanic Heritage Month by PAC, Parents Across Cultures, and from the support of Hands Across Campus students. Each Tuesday and Friday through October 15, students made announcements during flex that enlightened and educated students on the culture. The fundamental purpose was to let our Hispanic students and community share the pride and knowledge of their culture and for the community to learn to be more understanding and respectful of our differences. On September 21, the Hands Across Campus Core Team enjoyed a sample tasting from an authentic Mexican restaurant as a way of supporting small

minority owned businesses and getting educated on cultural cuisine. Food and conversation have always been a disarming way of engaging and this allowed our HAC leadership to become advocates and Men for Others with respect to cultures. Lastly on September 30, St. X hosted a Hispanic Heritage Month Cultural Sharing Event in the theater coupled with Mexican style sweet treats from a Hispanic vendor. The goal of the cultural sharing was to educate others on what has cultural value and what could be deemed culturally offensive or lacking in sensitivity. Based on our exit interviews with last years HAC Core Team, additional cultural holidays have been added to the calendar including Diwali and Native American Heritage Month, to name just a couple. We continue to educate our students to build an inclusive culture at the school and help grow global citizens — students prepared to live and thrive in a multicultural world.

PAC Ice Cream Social The results are in: Chocolate, Vanilla, and Black Raspberry Chip are the top three favorite ice cream flavors of the Class of 2024! PAC hosted its first-ever virtual Ice Cream Social on Sunday, August 30. Principal Tyrrell, President Reilly, PAC parents, and student volunteers all enjoyed getting to know the newest members of the St. X community, addressing questions and hopefully easing concerns as well. We engaged in a fun Kahoot game during which we polled our freshman families about ice cream, vacation spots, favorite subjects, and the beginnings of high school life. Some families also shared selfies with us. We appreciate everyone's willingness to adjust to the digital way of interaction, and are so grateful to have had the opportunity to spend time with each other. Thank you to all attendees and volunteers, and we hope you enjoyed the free ice cream that was generously donated for us to share! Have a great school year! Vice President’s Message Tony Schad ’81 People around St. X amaze me. And I mean that in the very best way. Look at the names in this magazine who give of their hard earned treasure so that young men, regardless of financial means, can attend St. Xavier High School. This honor roll magazine is an incredible measure of the strength of the Long Blue Line of St. X. This year more than 40% of our students will receive more than $4,321,000 in need based assistance so they can be a part of what is so special at St. Xavier. We ask you for your support of young men who are not only academically educated, but also nurtured and formed so as they leave the confines of our campus and they are prepared to take leadership roles in every aspect of our church, community, country and world. That starts with you, our benefactors. Without your help, these young men would not benefit from our incredible faculty and staff while profiting from our wonderful campus and its facilities. Just to give you some examples of what happens because of your support, here are some quick facts: • The St. X curriculum offers more than 200 courses, including 27 advanced placement courses in seven subject areas. • St. X students benefit from more than 80 clubs and organizations, not including athletics and intramurals. As an example, one such program is Career ConneXions which boasts an incredible 1,200 students participating either through attending presentations from guests speakers, mentor shadowing or actual internships while they are a St. X student. • Our students have the opportunity to voluntarily attend Mass on campus every day, plus get to attend all class and school Masses throughout the school year. • 90% of St. Xavier students voluntarily participate in community service opportunities. • The average college scholarship dollar amount award to the class of 2020 was $124,103. • In addition to nationally recognized theater, choir and band programs, St. Xavier fields 17 Division 1 Athletic programs. In fact, 80% of our students are student-athletes. • We have a student body that is 77% Catholic with 23% of our students coming from other faith backgrounds. • 20% of the St. Xavier student body is multicultural. • This past year, our students average ACT score was a 28.5, 92% of students who took an AP test scored a three or higher and 99% of our graduates have gone on to attend a four year college, university or military academy.
So yes, I am amazed by the people around St. X. I am amazed by the talent of our students. I am amazed by the dedication and skill of our faculty and staff. And I am amazed by you, the people who support our mission of educating and forming young men in the incredible tradition of the Jesuits. Career ConneXions unveiled their new logo, designed by Trevor Tiemeyer ’21
Students and Alumni Make Great ConneXions in Summer Internships
Through the ages, the wisdom and knowledge of the masters have been saved on parchment and paper. Now, for the St. Xavier community, they’re being saved digitally. “Masterclass” the latest component of Career ConneXions, the three-year-old experiential learning program designed to help St. X students choose their college majors and careers. The brainchild of St. X student John Piehowicz ’21, the program fills a void that was created when the Covid-19 pandemic canceled in-person school activities and programs in March 2020. “Masterclass is our online learning platform to bring educational and career content to students where and when they want to view it,” said Christine Dauenhauer, director of Career ConneXions. “It was launched this summer as a response to two factors: Covid made in-person learning events more challenging, and students are time-constrained during the school year. A Masterclass is an online video in which John interviews a subject-matter expert. Accompanying the video is a workbook “that summarizes the video, builds on it and provides actions steps a student can take to further develop the skill,” John said.

Mrs. Dauenhauer said the Masterclass platform’s benefits extend beyond current students. “It can engage also our young alumni, who until now have not been served by Career ConneXions. We’re excited for our full St. X community (current and past students) to benefit from this content. Beyond Career ConneXions, the Masterclass format and learning platform can be used to help any department at St. X better operate by incorporating video/online learning – Admissions, College Advising, and Counseling, for example.” If you’d like to get involved, head to the adult registration page, https://www. stxavier.org/academics/careerconnexions/career-connexions-adult-volunteer and when it asks about interest area, select "Record a Masterclass."
John got the idea for these Masterclasses after his parents gave him for Christmas a subscription to MasterClass, “a Web site where famous people teach different skills, from cooking to dog training,” he said. “I thought that, hey, we could do this with Career ConneXions, but we should ask people to do only one, instead of a series. Mrs. Dauenhauer loved the idea as a way to move some of our educational materials online. “So, we sent out some mass e-mails, and during June we had the videos produced, edited and ready to launch, which we did on July 10.” John produces the Masterclasses himself. He meets the expert before the interview to outline what will be discussed and to answer any lingering questions. John conducts the interview on Zoom, which he records. He exports the video to Adobe PremierPro, edits it, and adds program graphics. Either he or his brother, Joseph ’22, writes the workbook and tends to any last-minute changes. Finally the video is uploaded to YouTube and the Career ConneXions Canvas Page by Trevor Tiemeyer ’21. The process takes from a few days to a week to complete. Masterclass was launched July 11 and marketed heavily through social media. Reminders were sent at the start of the school year, and messages will continue through the years. As of September 1, there have been 265 views of all of the Masterclass videos – 185 during the week after the launch. As summer ended, there were five videos published: interview tips; entrepreneurial mindset; a two-parter on resume writing; leadership skills. Pat Wilson Then and Now
There were several examples of excellent teachers that had a positive impact on me and my time at St. Xavier; but the most powerful was Paul Lammermeier. I moved back to Cincinnati in the summer of my junior year and up until that point in my life, I had done very little in the way of community service activities. When I took Paul's Community Service class, all that changed. I truly understood and adopted the St. X motto of being a "Man for Others.� My weekly visits to Drake Hospital and spending my Saturdays at the 8th & State Boys Club on the North side of downtown Cincinnati had a profound impact on me then, and now.
I truly understood and adopted the St. X motto of being a "Man for Others.� I continue to try to live by that credo in both my personal and professional life. Paul made all that possible. He related to us like a friend yet maintained the respect of a teacher and mentor. He could laugh at the goofy things 16-18 year old boys do and say; but in the end, he was always about the service. I love when I meet fellow St. Xavier students and alumni, particularly those younger than me. All I say is "The Long Blue Line" and I automatically get a fist bump or a hearty handshake. Without really knowing that person, there's a bond that automatically creates a kinship like none other. That doesn't exist at other high schools. I especially appreciate that the school has made a tremendous effort in ensuring that every student now knows the St. X Fight song and Alma Mater. I believe that the St. X Advantage is the school's ability to instill ethical values and critical thinking skills in its students while ensuring that they recognize the need to serve their community not just while in school, but throughout their lifetime.

St Xavier Grad ’05 Attended the Ohio State University Marine Corps Staff Sergeant 9th Expeditionary Support Battalion Tanner Huskey’s Long Blue Line connection came full circle recently during a training session in Okinawa. He ran into Jake Denman ’05 who was attending the Basic Jungle Skills Training serving as a Staff Sergeant for the 9th Expeditionary Support Battalion. Tanner was an outstanding wrestler while attending St. Xavier and during his career was a team captain for Coach Tim McDonald. He also received the Father Muenchen Spirit Award. During his freshman year, his Freshman Head Coach was none other than Jake Denman. Jake also excelled at wrestling while at St. Xavier. He was a three-time Varsity Wrestler and a State Qualifier. Long time St. Xavier assistant coach Jerry Teuschler coached both Tanner and Jake and was influential in Jake becoming a wrestling coach at St. Xavier. Jerry and Jake remain close friends even today. Jake and Tanner recalled some of their St. X memories while standing on a bridge overlooking the jungle in Japan (Picture). Tanner commented on how the sport made him the man he is today. Jake still to this day competes in Open Wrestling Tournaments in the Marine Corps. Tanner’s home is in the Marine Home Unit Core Base in Hawaii. His first deployment was in Okinawa, Japan then onto the Philippines. This is his second deployment to Okinawa. He mentioned that whenever he comes home, he loves eating whatever his mom Sarah Huskey, serves (she is a gourmet chef ). The next stop is Skyline Chili! Then his next stop is out to St. Xavier to see his friends, former teachers and coaches.

Faculty Focus Fr. Rick Millbourn SJ Fr. Rick Millbourn SJ joined the Jesuits in 1988 and has served the St. Xavier community since 2010. During his time at St. X he has given tirelessly of his gifts and talents to serve the students of St. Xavier High School. Rick teaches religion as well as serving on the Kairos team. He does community service with Saturday service at People Working Cooperatively and has gone on the Peru Mission Trip. Serving a variety of co-curriculars Rick has worked with the Rugby team, served as an X-Ray Moderator and the Bowling team chaplain. Recently, he has become the Theatre Xavier mentor and chaplain. He does Reconciliation and Mass for retreats as well as performs multiple Masses per year for teams and clubs. During the recent COVID pandemic, Rick has been a lifesaver to the St. Xavier community offering knowledge, research and guidance for the back to school plan. Rick is truly a Man for Others.
What is the most rewarding thing about being a part of the St. Xavier community? The high school years are a privileged time in people’s lives; they are years of great discovery and immense growth. The freshmen arrive in the building really still young boys and over the four years grow and mature, develop intellectually and emotionally into young men. The opportunity to help our students in that process of discovery and growth is a gift to me. We provide opportunities for them to explore their faith, their ideas and predispositions, their dreams and plans, their relationships, and their commitment to their fellow human beings. Getting to share with them in their discoveries of the world around them, made by God so that they could grow into their best selves, delights me. Each year some alumni come back to school to visit, write emails, or call to share how they are doing, to let me know how their time at St. X helped them to grow into the people they are becoming. At a purely personal level, it is a great reward for me to get to hear of their continued personal growth even after graduation.
You have been a student and now a teacher at St. X. What is the one constant you have seen over the years? The sense of community here at St. X remains constant from my time as a student through the years up to the present. When I was a teenager, many of my best friends were here at St. X with me. However, even beyond any question of my personal friends, there was a sense of community, of a group of people caring for one another, caring about one another. I get that same feeling today. The reality of being a Xavier man forever (as stated in our alma mater) intrigues me. It would seem likely that I and our students today would graduate and leave these four years behind, but I did not and they do not. The experience of four years at St. X, shared with so many others, becomes a part of each person’s being. This community is woven into the very fabric of us.

You have been a leading force in preparing for this unprecedented school year. What have you taken away from this experience? At a purely personal level, diving into the emerging scientific understanding of SARS-CoV-2 and COVID-19 has been fascinating. Getting to watch the process of discovery and exploration of this small part of nature invigorates me. When I graduated from St. X I went to Miami University in chemistry and physics; I did my student teaching in chemistry. I tend to see the world through a scientific lens. As a Jesuit my intellectual focus has been in faith, theology, and especially ethics. Working with St. X’s COVID-19 task force has allowed me to join with others as we look for the best balance, the most ethical pursuit of how to continue the active mission of St. Xavier high school in these COVID times. Working with the other members of the task force has been affirming of how much each member of the faculty, staff, and administration want the best for our students. Each person has brought her or his own experience and perspective. Together we have done our best as a group to balance safety protocols for physical health with the psychological and educational needs of teenagers. That being said, our best scientific understanding of COVID-19 is still evolving; we keep looking at our policy to make sure it is addressing the situation as best we can.
How would you describe the St. Xavier Advantage? God calls each of us to live fully, whole-heartedly, offering ourselves completely in service. St. X provides an environment that encourages such living, that helps provide direction for greater dedication of purpose. Our St. X community as a whole cares about each member of the community and about the members of larger society.

FACULTY REISERT English Instructor, Tim Reisert wrote an article “Essential / Non-essential,” in the summer edition of OJELA (Ohio Journal of English Language Arts, the state level of NCTE). For several years now, incoming Juniors read a novel for English classes titled Station Eleven, about a flu pandemic and a troupe of actors who stage plays with a Traveling Symphony. A great book, and relevant – perhaps too relevant – for our experiences. Tim’s article is a reflection on remote teaching and thoughts from a teacher of literature and writing. 1. Alec Keith ’20 celebrated at Grand Lake St. Mary's after graduation with his dad, Matt ’93. Alec follows in Matt’s and grandfather, Bill’s ’65, footsteps into the Long Blue Line.
2. Greg LaLonde ’22 traveled to Switzerland for a semester abroad with 50 other kids from the US and London. The rigorous academics were based on “learning by doing”. He read Frankenstein while he ate dinner on Lake Geneva, studied Art History in Venice, performed The Merchant of Venice on the Rialto, spoke French in Annecy, and had geology labs in the mountains. In between class days he would have activities such as hiking, climbing, and skiing led by teachers. He had 3 weekend trips where he climbed Breighthorn Ridge (4,164m), biked 100km across a mountain range, and ice climbed on a glacier on Halloween.

A group of juniors and seniors traveled to West Virginia on a mission trip to make up for the one canceled this summer. On the trip, students volunteered at local nonprofits that work to end food deserts and give jobs to people with disabilities. Cultural immersion experiences added another layer to the experiences and students learned about life in coal country. Four more mission trips to Appalachia will take place throughout the school year.
