From the President Welcome to St. Xavier’s 2019-20 school year. It has been a fast and energized opening. When I walk down the halls, I see the 1,440 energetic and happy students and the faculty, staff, and administration maintaining the right balance between what is possible and what is practical.
When I stop to look at all the opportunities for good men to lead in Cincinnati, the USA, the world, and the Church, it is unacceptable if seats are unoccupied due to finances. Sometimes, when I see an empty seat in a freshman room, I can’t help but wonder what capable young man in Greater Cincinnati may have missed this academic opportunity. We know the number one reason students do not enroll is the cost. When I stop to look at all the opportunities for good men to lead in Cincinnati, the USA, the world, and the Church, it is unacceptable if seats are unoccupied due to finances. Financial aid, salaries, maintenance, safety, and improvements are all budget items that compete for attention. This year just under half of our students received need-based financial aid. We need competitive and fair salaries to enable us to attract the best teachers. The stubborn (sensible?) Cincinnatian in me believes we need safety and maintenance as top budget priorities. Tuition alone can’t cover all the costs, but tuition can

become a line separating who can be successful at St. X and who can afford to pay. What is the right balance that allows us to fill the seats? Our draw on the current endowment covers close to half of the financial aid awarded. In round numbers, we are spending just over $20K per student this year while tuition is just under $16K. We receive about $1K per student from tax dollars, and many parents willingly cover all, or a portion of, the remaining $3K gap through financial gifts of their own. Of course, many parents cannot cover this gap, and we do look to the long and wide blue line to help us with the shortfall. The Bomber in me wants to do it all and do it right. Combined with savvy fiscal oversight from our Board, management by our capable staff, and generous support from the long and wide blue line, we are well on our way to doing just that. I am sure we all agree, we need as many Men for Others out there as we can generate. When you match your generosity with the mission of St. X, good things will happen. In this issue we attempt to acknowledge all those who help us maximize our efforts. Thank you for your part of the mission. We are Xavier men forever. My Best,

Strings in Spain Strings director Isaac Watras, his wife, Ms. Sujean Kim, English teacher Alison Roberson and school counselor Peggy Schmucker, along with 20 strings students joined Joey Voss ’18 and traveled to Toledo Spain this summer. Students performed three concerts and attended a workshop with classical and flamenco guitarist Enrique Pastor Morales. Among the iconic places visited were Madrid, Monserrat, Barcelona, and the old Capitol, Toledo.

Students in X'ian China Luke McMurry ’20 participated in an internship with Sichuan Kayts Valve company (“Kayts”) of Zigong, China and arranged to have classmate Avery Juszczyk ’20 join him on the trip. The two traveled with representatives of Kayts and US based J Flow Controls, taking high speed trains to five different cities to meet with manufacturers, all the while learning about global trade. Luke and Avery were also able to take a side trip to the city of Xi’an where they not only viewed the Terra Cotta Warriors, they also met up with Chinese teacher Wei Yuan for dinner. Luke enjoyed using his Chinese speaking skills and both guys enjoyed the hot pot and Karaoke!

2019 Young Alumni Golf Outing On a hot, humid mid-August day in which the heat index approached 100 degrees, 124 alumni from the Classes of 2003-2013 teed off at the Glenview Golf Course for the 2019 Young Alumni Golf Outing. Despite the heat and the flak received from the competition, the Class of 2006 came out firing on all cylinders with the foursome of Mark Veith, Frank Morand, Michael Aluise and JT Torbeck winning the coveted blue blazers with a final score of -17. Next year’s outing will be on August 16 at Glenview Golf Course. Stay tuned for more information!

2019 Alumni Golf Outing 160 alumni enjoyed a beautiful day golfing at Clovernook on September 9. Both flights had excellent pace of play, which can only be attributed to one thing…excellent golf by our alumni! Classes ranging from 1961 to 2002 where represented, with the class of 1966 having the largest representation for the second year in a row. Thanks to all of our sponsors, alumni, volunteers, and the staff at Clovernook for making it such a joyful day.

Mr. Wayne Miller Mr. Wayne Miller joins St. Xavier as the Director of Diversity. Wayne has an extensive background in Diversity and Inclusion, having served as Manager of Diversity for Hospice of Cincinnati, Senior Diversity Consultant for V. Randolph Brown and led his own Diversity Consultancy. He has facilitated trainings for Jefferson County Public Schools, Lexington Catholic, and Barnabas Health, to name a few. He also produced the innovative guide "Respecting Diversity: A Guide for Addressing Unique End of Life Beliefs and Cultural Perspectives for Diverse Patients and Families" and developed training models around Implicit Bias and Symbolism. Wayne states, "I am very excited and blessed to join the St. X Family and continue the work that John Ravenna and Jaleria Burt have done with respect to Diversity. We want to continue the sincere welcoming environment for students of all cultures, their families and our community; and support equity and inclusion among our Administration, Faculty and Staff."

Parents Across Cultures Annual Ice Cream Social Parents Across Cultures held their annual Ice Cream Social on August 11 to welcome incoming freshmen families. This year’s event included 250 participants! Parents Across Cultures strives to build a more inclusive culture within the St. Xavier community by supporting the student’s growth and development and also cultivating partnerships with parents, faculty, staff and the St. Xavier administration.

New Garden on the Campus of St. Xavier High School The St. Xavier campus courtyard is more vibrant than ever, thanks to the dedication and hard work of senior Alec Keith. Alec consulted with President Tim Reilly ’76, Peggy Schmucker, moderator of the Culinary Club, and Tim Marston, Director of Grounds, to create a beautiful garden on campus. The garden highlights the growth and environmental potential on campus. Alec worked diligently to plan, design and plant the garden as part of his Eagle Scout project.
Center, Reading Feed & Garden, Horizon Landscaping Services, and Funke’s Greenhouses provided supplies and plants. The garden continues to flourish and not only feeds the St. Xavier community, it also serves as an inspiration for what more can be done on campus to help the environment. Funding was provided from a variety of sources including a donation from Henry and Rose Ann Dabek (parents of Frank ’96). Thank you to Alec and all involved in this project!
The garden has a variety of food including: tomatoes, peppers, beans, carrots, strawberries, squash, pumpkin, cabbage, lettuce, basil, chives, onions and two trees (one cherry and one apple). The food produced from the garden is being used in the school’s kitchen and by the Culinary Club. Leftover food is donated to nearby soup kitchens. “I am proud of the garden and what it brings to the school,” said Alec. “In my opinion, it not only brought food, but a better vibe to the courtyard. I am happy that it is creating a better environment at St. X.” The Boy Scouts of Troop 871 at St. Jude helped with planting of the garden and businesses Holscher & Hackman’s, White Oak Garden

Vice President’s Message Tony Schad ’81 It’s been a while, but this year I have been given the privilege to coach Freshman Football at St. X once again. The last group of freshmen I helped to coach won a state championship when they were juniors in 2016 so it has been a few years. And believe me that accomplishment was theirs and their varsity coaches, not mine! It is wonderful to coach at the freshmen level. This year I will get to see 92 boys begin to grow into young men. It is as much, if not more, about growth and becoming introduced and welcomed to the Long Blue Line and what it means to be a Bomber as it is about football. You form a bond with these kids as they begin making the incredible four-year journey and beyond as a St. Xavier Bomber. I get to work with some amazing men who share a passion for football, but even more, a passion for helping to form young men in the tradition of the Jesuits. It’s about doing things the right way. As coach Ed Nardini tells them, “Look yourself in the mirror each night and ask that question. Was I the best student I could be today? Was I the best friend, co-worker, son, brother and teammate I could be? How can I get better?” By the way, there is not a person I know better than Ed Nardini in terms of keeping what we try to do with freshmen football at St. X in the right perspective. He’s the best and we are lucky to have him work with our young men. Varsity head coach Steve Specht ’86 jokes that we have the most veteran freshmen coaching staff in the state. That’s a nice way to say we are old! Except for Nick Lyle, class of 2000, we all have some sprinkles of grey on our head… when there is hair present! By the way, my son, a 2013 grad, had Coach Lyle as a position coach and would run through
a wall for him still today. Coach Jim Telles has helped to produce some great offensive linemen over the years but when you listen to him talking with our players it is about so much more than football. It’s about life. Life lessons. It is very safe to say that Jim has had a major role in producing many, many more wonderful young men. With coaches like Jim Telles ’78 (and yes, from Elder), Ed Nardini ’81 and the rest of our staff which includes, “the Silver Fox” Don Brichler ’75, Tim O’ Toole ’75, Nick Lyle, ’00, my partner on Bomber football broadcasts and fellow St. X Advancement Officer, Ralph Nardini ’77 and a parent of an alum and former college teammate of Ed Nardini, Gregg Prebles, our young men are in great hands. It is not a meaningless statement when we say at St. X, athletics and co-curriculars are an extension of the classroom. It is spiritual and formational for our students/players. We also have a great time working with each other and these kids.
It’s about the experience young men have here. We are striving to carry on the tradition of some of the wonderful coaches I played for as a student at St. X. Coaches like Steve Rasso, Bill Slinger, John Sabatalo, Phil Reichle, Tim Banker Sr., Dick Piening, Pat O’Leary ’58 to name just a few, were men who had a tremendous impact on my life. I could also go back for other alums and list names like Tom Ballaban, Dick Berning, Paul Zook ’57, Myron Kilgore, Mike Arata ’65, Russ King ’63 and many, many more. All these men were not only wonderful coaches, they have set fantastic examples for thousands of Bombers through the years. Why do I expound on this? Look at the names of thousands of wonderful benefactors in this magazine. People outside St. X ask me why so many continue to support the school. It’s about the experience young men have here. It’s the experience they have in the classroom, in athletics, in theater, band, choir, mock trial and many more. So thank you for your support and please know your support is Igniting the Fire in what makes the Long Blue Line so wonderful. Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam – For the Greater Glory of God

The incredible generosity of the benefactors assist our faculty and staff in igniting the passion of the newest members of the Long Blue Line each and every year and provide the fuel which inspires our young men to be difference makers in our school, community, nation and world. Our benefactors’ generosity gives our students the ability to take part in more than 200 courses including 27 Advancement Placement courses. It is through benefactor’s support that our students participate in more than one hundred clubs and organizations while being rigorously challenged in every facet of their educational and formational time at St. Xavier. This year 716 young men qualified for need-based tuition assistance. That is 49% of the St. X student body receiving $4.6 million dollars in
financial assistance. Our endowment covers $2.7 million of the assistance need leaving $1.9 million needed to be raised. In addition to the need-based assistance that is awarded, each and every student gets the benefit of a $2,822 GAP between what it costs to educate them and what is charged in tuition and raised for financial aid. In total the GAP amounts to $4,063,680. That means we are asking our alumni, current parents and friends to support the $6 million needed to make a St. Xavier education possible for our 1,440 students. The need is real. The challenge is great. The reward for our students, however, is incredible. Thank you for your support and your investment in the young men of St. Xavier High School!

Career ConneXions Students and Alumni Make Great ConneXions in Summer Internships
During the summer, Career ConneXions canvassed internship sponsors and participating students for comments about their experiences. Their responses showed that it was rewarding for both groups. Dawson Adams ’19 was a marketing intern this summer with LOTH Inc., a furniture, design and workspace full-service solutions company. Said LOTH’s Kelly Schoembs: “Dawson exceeded expectations in all regards this summer. He demonstrated drive, initiative, flexibility and an interest in learning new skills. . . . Many people asked for Dawson to help collaborate or contribute to projects . . . because he offered value in such a broad way.” “Everyone here I spoke with had nothing but positive things to say about you and the effort you put forth,” wrote to Anthony DeCarlo Jr., COO of TWC Concrete Services about intern Alex Wentzel ’20. Mike Prus ’91, vice president of Prus Construction, sponsored several interns again this summer. The St. X students, he said, “have been involved in a variety of tasks. They are doing some good work. . . . Michael Sidenstick ’19 has been doing a lot of data analysis, which should serve him well in the future. Overall, I am getting good feedback about the boys.” Added Michael Sidenstick: “My internship has been going great! I work alongside (students) Tommy Walters ’20 and Andrew Gebhardt ’20. We’ve been very productive and completed a lot of projects already. One task I’ve been working on is the creation of an Excel spreadsheet that can take in data from Prus’s GPS systems and tell when an entry for a certain piece of equipment is running into problems. . . The company Prus purchases GPS equipment from has already started to use my data to diagnose problems.” “This was a great experience for me,” said Matt Meyer, Director of Field

Career ConneXions is “a really great program and you are developing more and more partners every year. . . . I am looking forward to being a part of it again next year.” The success of Career ConneXions has caught the eye of the school’s Board of Directors. We asked a few St. Xavier graduates to reflect on their time at St. Xavier and identify faculty and staff who made a memorable impact on their lives. Jack Wild ’53 (Fr. Ladislaus A. Majerowski, SJ) As a freshman my first class was Latin with Fr. Majerowski. He impressed upon us that we would learn Latin and we would have two Latin classes a day and plenty of homework every night, so be prepared. For all our classes, you had to be ready for a 4x6 quiz. We all carried tablets of 4x6 sheets of paper. You always too had to remember to put AMDG at the top of any written test or assignment.

Respect for life was a theme that was always present in all of our classes. Those were the early days when there were only hints of what would eventually happen with Roe v Wade. You were not allowed to smoke within a block of school but when you were a Senior you could smoke at lunch time in the Senior Lounge. That room was like walking into a dense fog. We were taught to care about others too. We were told about the Patna Missions. We would collect food items for the poor at Christmas. In the Jesuit tradition of giving of oneself for others. My education at St. X was a big part of establishing my overall success. It set the ground work for learning how to learn. Learning to be open to an idea other than your own. Learning how to listen and to understand.

The philosophy of sharing and doing for others is something that I think came with my St. X education. I feel that I have been truly blessed with a good life. I enjoy giving back and sharing my good fortune. I hope that what I do to help out in any way that I can will help make someone else better too.

Mike Freeman ’80 (Jim Downie and Joan Whittaker) There were two teachers who, looking back, had a profound and lasting impact on my life - for two very different reasons. Jim Downie, who taught Major British Writers my junior year, brought a combination of joy and rigor to the study of literature that rubbed off on me in an imperceptible, almost magical way. I ended up majoring in English at college, dabbled at getting a PhD in the subject and, ultimately, ended up in the advertising business, tying to delight and influence people with words. As anyone who took a course from Mr. Downie will remember, he was a notorious task-master. Five-page papers it seemed like every other week - handed back with comments on every page. His commitment to making a group of scribblers into disciplined writers amazes to this day. Then there was Joan Whittaker, my Calculus teacher, who decided on an under-attended snow day to teach class the rudiments of Bridge (the card game) in lieu of the regular lesson plan. That, along with her continuing encouragement (she even sent me a copy of the Encyclopedia of Bridge upon graduation) resulted in a passionate hobby that lasts to this day. There is something called the “Great Man Theory of History.” It’s a 19th century idea that history can largely be explained by the impact of great and influential people, who through their superior intellect, or courage or charisma, have a decisive impact on their times. In my history, Jim Downie and Joan Whittaker, were two of the Great people. Looking back, what strikes me most wasn’t a particular philosophy or phrase but the overall service orientation of the teachers and staff at St. X. They were intensely dedicated to the educational success of students, including their moral and religious formation. Undoubtedly, for many of them, teaching was an economic sacrifice. Theirs was very much a vocation.

Men for Others - To me, this is the essence of Jesuit education - the notion that service to God and to others should inspire and guide our journey through life. It’s a hard principle to live in a relativistic, materialist age. To me, St. X has always been an example of the principle in action.

Faculty Focus Mike Noszka Mike Noszka joined the St. Xavier community this summer. He will be teaching in the Math department and serve as the head varsity basketball coach. Mike grew up in Pittsburgh, PA and went to Pittsburgh Central Catholic High School and Purdue University. After college, he taught math and coached basketball in Indiana for 12 years. His wife Kellie is from Cincinnati and attended The Ohio State University. Together they moved to Wilmington, Ohio in 2005 where he continued teaching and coaching at Wilmington High School. Their daughter, Taylor, is currently a freshman at Wilmington where she starts on the varsity soccer team. Their son, Michael, is a 6th grader and is looking forward to coming to St. X and being a member of the Class of 2026!
Why did you choose to make the move to St. Xavier High School? There are many reasons my family and I wanted to come to St. Xavier. I have always believed in Catholic Schools and that a Jesuit education is the finest. I believe that a student-athlete who is disciplined in the classroom, will be poised on the court, especially when it matters most. From a coaching standpoint, I feel that St. X is a place where you have an opportunity to win championships by going about things the right way. It is simply a great opportunity and something that I have wanted for a long time.
What are you most looking forward to in the classroom and on the court? I look forward to building relationships here at St. Xavier. Friendships and relationships are sacred in life. Teaching and coaching is a great way to foster those relationships. I absolutely am looking forward to building a championship basketball program at St. X. After 26 years in public education, I am very excited to teach and coach with God as “The Foundation.�
What do you feel is the St. Xavier Advantage?
You have been around the St. Xavier community for a few months, what has made the biggest impact on you so far?
It is just that, The St. Xavier Advantage. I feel that St. Xavier is a great place. St. Xavier should play second fiddle to no one in anything we do.
The Brotherhood and The Servanthood has impressed me so far and it is evident that it is impactful. Everyone I have met puts others first. It is more than a motto, it is a model. I am confident that in the winter season you will see it in our basketball program.

Michael Finley ’89 was promoted to Senior Principal Scientist in the Lead Discovery group of Janssen R & D, a Johnson & Johnson company. He leads a team of assay development and screening scientists to identify small molecule starting points for new medicines, supporting disease areas including oncology, immunology, and neuroscience. He recently purchased a property in Covington, KY that has been in his family for over 70 years. Michael lives with his family in Allentown, PA.
Patrick Foppe ‘06, is the Director of Golf Instruction at the company he founded, "1 Under Golf". He works with many of the top PGA golfers and collegiate golfers. Patrick spoke with the students in the History of Capitalism class in August.

Senior Assistant Solicitor General Andrew Amend ’97 has been named to the position of Assistant Deputy Solicitor General for Criminal Matters, effective August 1. Andy joined the Appeals and Opinions Division of OAG in 2012, where he has written, argued, and supervised many challenging cases and issues. 10’s Alex Brokamp ’10 studied Industrial Design at the University of Cincinnati. He is currently pursuing his master's degree in furniture & fixtures design at Art Center College of Design. He has recently been one of six designers selected to represent the United States in Paris at the renowned design fair Maison&Objet. At this exhibit Brokamp will be presenting a collection of his furniture and lighting pieces that focus on juxtaposing simple lighthearted notions with a technically refined aesthetic. The show took place September 6-10, 2019. While in Paris he also showcased work at Galerie Joseph. This past May Alex's Collate Table collection received a NYCxDesign award from Interior Design Magazine for best student design of the year. Brandon Knox ’11 is currently the Manager of Fan Development for the St. Louis Blues organization. He is responsible for the fan experience in the St. Louis area as well as inside the Stadium during games. His work has grown attendance and revenues significantly in his 4 years with the organization. He celebrated the Stanley Cup victory with the organization.

weeks in Moshi, Tanzania conducting research with Kilimanjaro Christian Medical University students. The project on energy insecurity in health facilities was very engaging and he learned a great deal about the health system in Tanzania. The research will be outlined in an upcoming paper.

Charity event. For a few years, they would golf 100 charity. This summer, classmate, Henry Baker ’20, resurrected the tradition with the help of Cincinnati Bell. On June 14, St. X golfers and their dads joined Will and Matt to raise $27,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. The proceeds helped send Parker, a 7-year-old boy, suffering from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, to Disney World. Fall 2019
