From the President Be still and know that I am God. PSALM 46:10

This verse was spoken to me by a student while we were on a seven day retreat during this past spring break. These words had been part of a morning meditation before the students had time to explore nature in silence. He followed the quote by saying, “I get it. I really get it.” And so it goes; young men experience the thousands of facets of a St. Xavier education, one of which is reflection and they grow into exceptional young men.

As I was taking time to be still and to reflect in the midst of my exhilarating journey this year, I thought about reunions with alumni on campus, around the city, and around the country, and how members of the Long Blue Line attest to the life-long impact that St. Xavier has had on them. I have found the tradition of singing the Alma Mater as a way of celebrating that impact to be very moving. I checked with some of my classmates from the Class of 1976 though and we came to a consensus that if we ever sang the Alma Mater, we certainly don’t remember singing it.

As I happily embrace this newer tradition however, I have noticed that few of the women and some of the dads don’t join in. I was told once that was because they did not graduate from St. X, and they don’t feel like it pertains to them. I understand this feeling, but I also know St. X is successful not only because of the students but because of the extended St. X community. At a presentation to parents of the Class of 2023, Mr. Ralphfiel Farrar, not himself a St. X graduate, invited all the parents to take the opportunity to become members of the “Wide Blue Line.” That is the concept that escaped me! It is a long and wide blue line, and I officially invite all members of this “Wide Blue Line” to join in the singing of the Alma Mater at future St. Xavier events.

On May 30 at the Cintas Center, St. Xavier added 385 new members at a joy-filled graduation. As you see on the cover of this magazine, our graduates experienced another fairly new St. X tradition as they were greeted by an honor guard from the Class of 1969 who were celebrating their fiftieth reunion.

I hope this year’s graduation was as satisfying to the classes of ’69 and ’19 as it was to me.

I have found the tradition of singing the Alma Mater as a way of celebrating that impact to be very moving.

We will be spending the summer prepping for the next school year and beyond, including the beginning steps for our next strategic plan. We thank Ann Berger and the Board of Trustees, the faculty and staff, the Long and Wide Blue Line, and all our students for a successful ‘18-19 school year, and we look forward to our students returning on August 15. I hope you have some time to “be still” this summer and reflect on what is important in your own life.

Taste of Diversity

Ignatian Values Day

Over 90 students shared information, food, and cultural notes about 30 countries at the Taste of Diversity. This was the 9th annual celebration held in February each year. The event, sponsored by the World Languages Department and Parents Across Cultures, has grown to include music, dance and food and welcoming over 400 guests. President Tim Reilly offered a prayer for peace as the event began. Held in the Ellis gym, the students displayed posters, imagery and artifacts and shared native foods with the St. Xavier families, staff, guests and friends. A buffet tasting from multiple countries was offered while guests enjoyed performances from students, faculty and local performers.

Students gathered on Wednesday, February 13, for the 4th annual Ignatian Values Day. Students Michael Srinivasan ’19 and Robert Waddell ’19 (shown) shared their stories of Companionship and how connection with others is a value of St. Ignatius of Loyola.

Students also attended other storytelling sessions which included film, dance and music.

Our GRATITUDE goes to the leadership of our school, President Reilly and Principal Tyrrell, The Department of Multicultural Initiatives, Director John Ravenna and Ms. Jaleria Burt, our faculty liaison, Mr. Kris Holmes and the advice of Dr. George Jacob, the teachers of the World Languages Department and their Families, Parents Across Cultures Families, Friends and Volunteers, Mr. Todd Treon, AVI Food Systems and all the St. Xavier teachers and guests, participating faculty, staff, and administration.

Finally, the biggest thanks go to our students: presenters, performers, volunteers and attendants, the reason and center of this event. Thank you!

This year’s theme was: The I.P.P. (Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm): Telling Stories the Ignatian Way. Students listened to a variety of folks share, through a variety of media, their stories of Experience—Reflection—Action (the three major components of the paradigm).

Ignatian Values Day commenced in 2014 as a way for our school to pause from the normal routine and intentionally focus on our Ignatian charism.

This year, the IVD committee procured, as our keynote, the skills and talent of Zak Morgan ’89, Grammy-nominated children’s musician, to tell the story of his journey to a profession in music.

We also had the talented people from within the building leading “story-telling” sessions as well. Certainly, there will be a “takeaway” for everyone from the stories of the day!

Other presentations were given by: Drama teacher Liz Harris, Zak Morgan ’89, Dancers Kodee Van Nort and Rodney Veal.

Film FEAST by Oscar Winning animated short by Patrick Osborne ’00. Discussions were led by Ms. Lora Pateras and Ms. Katie Collins.

Witness talks were given by Michael Srinivasan ’19 and Robert Waddell ’19 with Dr. Brady Mechley.

The school community gathered in the morning to pray and enjoy the keynote talk/performance. Then, the students moved about with their class levels in four different sessions. The day closed with a short reflection period in the homerooms.

Hall of Fame This winter, St. Xavier alumni and friends helped usher in the St. Xavier Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2019. State Finish Congratulations to coach Jamie Laughlin and the St. Xavier Science Olympiad team, who had their best ever finish at state in 14th place. St. Xavier received medals in two events: 4th place in dynamic planet (Austin Emmons and Gabe Paris-Ebdon) and Sounds of Music (Andrew Lu and Paul Jacobs). This year St. Xavier had 29 student participants in Science Olympiad of which only three were seniors. The future looks promising for this young team!

Mock Trial Team White Congratulations to the White St. X Mock Trial team on competing at the State championships. They won the first round and lost late on Friday night in a split decision.

Congratulations to George Burquest and Robert Castaneros on winning Best Attorney and Joseph Rainford on winning Best Witness. Other participants on this successful team were: Louis Pham, Kyle Powers, Spencer Rabe, Benjamin Dawson, Mason Seitz and Lucas Meyer.

Grand Raffle = Wagner Impact Silicon Valley 20 Current St. Xavier students, along with Ed Franchi, Tim McDonald, and Andy Sweeny, through the Entrepreneurship Club, had a life-changing spring break with the X-perience Entrepreneurship Silicon Valley Expedition.

23 distinguished alumni hosted the students in a variety of ways, sharing their corporate experience, hospitality and guidance. Because of the gracious alumni, the 20 current St. X students were able to see Stanford University and the inner workings behind innovative and globally successful businesses such as Apple, Tesla, Lucas Films, IBM, eBay, LinkedIn, Google, GitHub, Industrious, SNP Communications, Fifth Wall Ventures, and Airbnb.

The students were in awe of the opportunity and power of the Long Blue Line, saying: “I felt very privileged to be part of this once-in-a-lifetime experience. I can’t express how grateful I am to be able to meet the alumni and have the opportunity to create the connection that I did. I would definitely do it again and highly recommend this trip to anyone even if they don’t have any intention of being an entrepreneur.” – Brandon Dinan ’19.

Senior Erik Kenkel said, “I thought the trip was a great experience on clarifying what my next move as a senior is. It was an incredible experience.”

Vikram Meyer ’20 shared, “It was amazing getting to know the amazing alumni that are part of the Long Blue Line and to experience their generosity in donating their time and money to ensure we had a great trip.”

Jack Sayre ’20 said, “The trip gave me a better insight into the many opportunities here in the Valley. I now understand how I can immerse myself into the culture later in life.”

Trip organizers and chaperones hope this trip becomes a recurring event, helping more students benefit from the St. Xavier Advantage.

Tom ’62 and Ginny Wagner didn’t expect to make an extraordinary gift. In the 1990’s their budget allowed for a small gift to be made to St. Xavier High School. This was shortly after the last of their three sons had graduated from St. Xavier and their two daughters completed high school. Upon reaching out to St. Xavier about their modest gift, they learned that if they intended to make a similar gift on a yearly basis, then the gift could grow exponentially through endowment and become a sustainable scholarship fund for many years beyond their initial contribution. Over the years, the nest egg grew significantly with the power of compounding money to create a scholarship fund that transcended any one-time gift.

Tom said that he always made his charitable gifts in December, near Christmas time and the pivotal end-of-the-year window. He felt that giving this donation was a gift he was able to give to himself and others at the same time. He and Ginny have enjoyed reading the thank you letters from the students as the boys learn that donors to the school are real people who are concerned about their education.

Tom recalls that his own sons received some financial aid in the years they attended and he felt that it was fitting that he gives back to the school that made him who he is today. His and Ginny’s spirit of giving has been modest and constant through the years.

They had never attended the St. Xavier X-Travaganza in its 46-year existence because he felt that it was out of their reach financially to bid on the extravagant items. X-Travaganza, though, had always been on their ‘bucket list’ to attend he said. This year he and Ginny decided to attend and were in awe of the generous spirit in the room. He has purchased many raffle tickets over the years and considered the price of the Grand Raffle ticket to be his donation for the evening, knowing that winning would be a long shot. On the ticket, he placed the name of the Scholarship Fund rather than his own name, assuming that he was attending the fundraiser for the benefit of the students.

To his delight the specially addressed ticket won the Grand Raffle and the students of St. Xavier became the beneficiaries of the $20,000 prize! Tom’s message to the students is clear, he places a high value on education and is grateful for the gifts he has received in life. He is happy to pay back for the generosity of others and encourages students to grow into Men for Others and give back one day to the next generation.

X-Travaganza 2019: A Derby Night XTraordinaire For the past 46 years, X-Travaganza has served as the St. Xavier flagship event.

Countless members of the St. Xavier community have worked together in support of X-Travaganza, collectively raising millions of dollars to support the school’s educational and formational programs. This event also provides the opportunity for newcomers to forge a bond with the school and veteran parents to strengthen that bond.

X-Travaganza 2019 kicked off on Friday, March 8 with Opening Party 2019: Out of the Barn – Off to the Races. Opening Party Chairs Christine and Dave Dauenhauer and Julie and Gary Shipley welcomed over 600 guests to the decked-out Berning Gym. The event featured a buffet with an array of Lenten foods and superb desserts, entertainment by the St. X Marching Band Drumline and X-citing raffles and Silent Auction items. Welcoming parents of the Freshman Class of 2023 to the St. Xavier community were President Tim Reilly ’76 and Principal Terry Tyrrell, who reinforced St. X’s commitment to the incoming class, the importance of summer study skills classes and early involvement in the numerous activities available at St. X. The following evening, March 9, X-Travaganza Chairs Colleen and Adam Ireton ’88 (above right) greeted those attending A Derby Night XTraordinaire, held in the transformed Ellis Gym. While browsing and bidding on more than 400 Silent Auction items, guests enjoyed cocktails

and hors d’oeuvres as well as purchasing chances on the Drink Raffle, Bourbon Raffle, Reds Raffle and Duck Pond surprises.

Fr. Baum led a prayer after guests were seated. Not delaying one more minute, the Grand Raffle ticket drawing was held for prizes of $5,000, $10,000 and $20,000. As the gourmet meal was served, auctioneer and evening emcee, Mr. Lance Walker, opened the fast-paced Live Auction. Bidding was constant and ever-increasing for over 55 tempting items including a week in an Italian villa, Hamilton in the Big Apple, a Chicago X-perience, FC Cincinnati Suite and Derby weekend tickets in Millionaires Row. An evening highlight was the return of Greg Scruggs ’08, who shared his inspirational personal story. While a St. X student receiving tuition assistance, he excelled on the gridiron as a Bomber before becoming a University of Louisville Cardinal. Having enjoyed a successful NFL career, including two Super Bowl rings, he now is with the University of Cincinnati football staff as Director of Player Development.

Greg’s moving explanation of the impact the generosity of donors had on his life prompted a standing ovation, followed by an outpouring of donations.

Through the generosity of the entire St. Xavier community, X-Travaganza 2019 raised more than $910,000 to benefit all St. Xavier students. Thank you to X-Travaganza Director Cathy Cionni and her staff, X-Travaganza 2019 Chairs Colleen and Adam Ireton and the Opening Party Chairs Christine and David Dauenhauer and Julie and Gary Shipley. More than 1,500 X-Travaganza supporters – many continuing to support the event years after their son graduates – contribute to make every activity a fun, communitybuilding event. These volunteers, committee chairs, donors, sponsors, auction bidders, event attendees and other supporters bring the event from the starting gate to the finish line. Through their efforts, proceeds from X-Travaganza’s year-round series of events, auctions and raffles benefit all the young men at St. Xavier.

Commissioning Mass

Robot-X

The St. Xavier community celebrated Mass and the commission of those called to serve on May 1, 2019. After the Mass, Principal Tyrrell and President Reilly led the students, faculty, and staff in bestowing Blessings upon the 108 Juniors and accompanying staff who are attending 12 different mission trips this summer. The trips will range from local service endeavors to international efforts. Fr. Manahan encouraged them in the Jesuit tradition to “Ite, inflammate omnia” that is ‘Go, set the world on fire’ with their good works.

Congratulations to the “RoboBombers” who competed in the FIRST FTC World Championship Competition in Detroit, MI. With consistent luck, skill, hard work, and dedication, Robot-X and their randomly-determined alliance partners won 6 and tied 1 of 9 Qualification matches to put St. Xavier in the top 25 of the teams at worlds, placing Robot-X in the top 1% of over 2400 teams WORLD WIDE. Thank you to John D’Alessandro for his dedicated coaching.

The Senior Class was Blessed by the community as they look ahead to joining the Long Blue Line at graduation.

Career ConneXions completes a successful 2nd year; supports the St. X Mission

As Career ConneXions completes its second year, it boasts a record of success that everyone associated with St. X can be proud of.

The program has proven its value to the school’s mission and its young men, and bolsters St. Xavier’s competitive advantage in recruiting students.

Outgoing Board President Ann Berger, in remarks to the 700 people at the President’s Dinner in May, shined the spotlight on Career ConneXions, saying: Career Connections, our experiential learning program, is a brilliant example of the St. Xavier Advantage. Students connect with alumni who share their career experiences, mentor students one on one, invite them to shadow their workplace, and offer summer intern experiences. Internships have doubled from 15 to 30 this summer. Students who interned last year felt they had achieved a competitive edge in applying to colleges because their resumes contained experience in a field that interests them.

Let’s let Paul Rieselman ’71, and member of the faculty, and 2019 Magis award winner, speak to Career ConneXions and the school’s mission: The mission is: “To assist young men in their formation as leaders and Men for Others through rigorous college preparation in the Jesuit tradition.”

Career ConneXions provides rigorous preparation for the college experience. The St. Xavier student is placed into an already thriving workforce, is assigned meaningful tasks and becomes an apprentice under the care of a former grad.

St Xavier wants a boy to discover his unique gift, cultivate that gift and then offer the gift in service to others. The exposure to any internship through Career ConneXions will assist the young man in both the discovery and further mastery of that gift he may possess.

We hope that our boys will make their ways to positions of leadership in the workforce. He is much more capable from a leadership position to ensure that a person’s work is performed within a culture that cares about the dignity of the person. What better way to assert himself as a man for others?

Career ConneXions seeks to unite these boys with an already established graduate in the graduate’s work milieu. This becomes yet another way for St. Xavier to reach out to our established grads and give them yet another meaningful way to reach out and aid their alma mater. Again, these men are asked to seize the opportunity of caring for others. The beat goes on.

Matthew DeBrunner ’18, a member of the first class to go through Career ConneXions, recently expressed his thanks to Career ConneXions Director Christine Dauenhauer and for the advantage he gained from the program: I just wanted to thank you once again for creating this great program a year ago and having me as a member of the steering team. While I realized many of the benefits last year, they became much more noticeable this year in college. . . . Career ConneXions gave me a strong advantage in my freshman year of college that even some upperclassmen do not possess. . . . (L)earning important skills through the program such as interview practice, resume building, e-mail writing, and networking all set me up for two wonderful opportunities this year.

These quotations are well-earned praise, indeed. But to continue its success and to grow, Career ConneXions needs your support. Alumni and friends have responded robustly to the call for mentors and speakers. Now is the time to begin lining up opportunities for job shadowing during the school year and for internships for the summer of 2020. Words From The Principal Terrence Tyrrell In high school, I remember sitting in my freshman World History class at St. Louis University High School and learning that during the Age of Exploration and Colonization, much of Europe tried to spread Christianity in Asia and India by forcing European culture on the native peoples. I then learned that before they evangelized in Asia and North America during the 16th and 17th centuries, the Jesuits, including Francis Xavier, assimilated to the culture of the people they encountered, learning the language and customs. Xavier taught us the importance of being culturally competent.

Jesuit schools have been striving for diversity and inclusion throughout their history. The very first Jesuit sponsored school in Italy broke with the convention (of schools) only educating the aristocracy. The best and brightest from all social classes were invited to participate. When we look at the core principals of Jesuit education, including cura personalis, experience, and missioning to go out into the world and seek justice, it is clear that we are called to create a diverse and inclusive culture in order to prepare our students for the global experience.

Jesuit schools have endeavored to create diverse and inclusive schools for over 450 years. And while cultural competency is not new, at St. Xavier High School, we have been more intentional over the last twenty years.

Much has been done, but there is more work to do. I encourage all of us to take the next steps in working to create a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion.

To this end, in 1999, St. Xavier High School made the decision to change the culture of the school around diversity and inclusion. At that time, our students of color made up 3% of the population, female faculty made up 23% of the population and our faculty of color made up 2.9% of the population. Today students of color make up 18% of the population, female faculty make up 40% of the population and faculty of color make up 7.5% of the population. We have demonstrated statistical growth, but we also look to grow in empathy and understanding of our increasingly diverse student body in our school and beyond North Bend Rd. In 2013, St. Xavier High School worked to define multicultural competency and then began to train faculty and staff through invitation in 2014. Five years later, more than 50 faculty and staff have been trained on multicultural competency. In the same way that making community service an essential part of our school and culture was an intentional movement beginning fifty years ago, growing our individual and institutional cultural competency remains an important priority.

Much of the credit for our work in diversity and inclusion goes to John Ravenna ’87. Since 1999, John has served as the Director of Diversity impacting students, faculty, staff and culture. After 19 years of service in diversity, John is moving into a new role in Community Service and teaching Oral Communication. We thank him for his service.

I am pleased to announce that Wayne Box Miller will begin serving as the Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion beginning on August 1. Wayne brings a large breadth of experience working in the Cincinnati area with diversity and inclusion. I am excited for what the future will bring.

Much has been done, but there is more work to do. I encourage all of us to take the next steps in working to create a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion.

FOOD DRIVE Freshman and sophomore homerooms collected more than 70,000 lbs of canned goods that was distributed to 30 food banks. Junior and senior homerooms gave food to more than 550 local families.

MISSION TRIPS This summer, more than 100 rising seniors will be immersed and serve communities in 12 different locations - in the US and abroad.

TX This year, Theatre Xavier students broke new ground by writing and producing an original show, titled Parents, which premiered at the world’s largest performing arts festival - The Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland! Parents was the first show of the X-Box series, which focuses on new and experimental theatre. The show was a huge success with almost sold-out crowds and even received coverage on the Cincinnati evening news. The students learned a lot, built their resumes and had their horizons widened by experiencing theatre outside of America.

Once back in the states TX produced a heartwarming main stage season with the shows It’s A Wonderful Life and Legally Blonde. Life re-told the classic story of George Bailey and his struggle to find happiness. It opened near Christmas and featured Dylan McKenna as George and Alexandra Leurck as Mary. Also of note was TXer Claire Herrington who took on the role of Potter. Traditionally played by a man, Claire made the character her own and brought the house down with her powerful portrayal of this greedy and conniving villain.

Theatre Xavier ended its season with the timely musical, Legally Blonde. Featuring TXers London Brinkman, Ben Mitchell, Nate Trajano and Chancellor Waye this show delighted audiences by utilizing the St. X marching band to bring a drum line onstage!

Audiences flocked to this show, with many attending more than once to experience this pink cocktail of music, meaning and fun.

Next year TX will be producing the Tony award winning shows The Curious Incident of the Dog In The Nighttime and Fiddler On The Roof. They will also be heading back to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival with another original show!

BANDS The Marching Bombers continued their tradition of wonderful pregame and halftime performances. The halftime show featured the music from movies such as The Greatest Showman, The Incredibles and The Avengers. The band proudly supported the football team through an exciting season enduring many wet and rainy game nights.

The St. Xavier Drum Line had another great year with featured performances for several events and continued their community service with guest performances for the Buddy Walk for Down Syndrome, the Butterfly Walk for Cancer Free Kids, the ALS 5K, and the Disabled Veterans 5K Run. They continue to be a big X-Travaganza auction item for a performance at a private dinner event.

The Jazz Ensemble performed for Open House, the Christmas Concert, the Annual Michael Benson Concert, and the end of the year concert.

The Concert Band and Percussion Ensemble had a wonderful performance at the end of the year concert in May.

STRINGS During the Fall String Recital on October 18th the Men in Black welcomed the string players from the class of 2022 onto the St. X stage.

In December, the Men in Black joined the St. X Jazz Band and choirs for the annual Christmas Concerts.

On Saturday, January 25th, nine students from St. X participated in the 2019 Ohio Music Educators Association Solo and Ensemble Adjudicated event at Elder High School. Six of the nine St. X students earned a rating of I and three earned a rating of II. Seven were string students: Henry Baker ’20 violin; Nathan Dorsey ’22 violin; Brynmore Langley ’20 viola; Raza Adhami ’21 cello; Daniel Dorsey ’21 cello; Luke Black ’20 double bass; Varun Gudla ’21 classical guitar.

CHOIR The St. Xavier choral program completed a delightful year of music-making in and around the St. X community. In total, more than 130 9th-12th graders participated in the choral ensembles this year through both X-Men and Ensemble X. Both ensembles sang beautifully in their fall and spring concerts, and enjoyed joining forces with the other St. X music ensembles at our annual Christmas concerts.

Ensemble X also represented the St. X community at several performances and special events throughout the school year, singing as guest performers at Musica Sacra’s holiday concert, at the ensemble’s annual Christmas Dinner celebration, at the Mother’s Club Christmas luncheon, at Academic Awards Night, and at an Xtravaganza auction winner’s event. As we look ahead, the summer and next school year offer some very exciting opportunities. Over twenty current students will be traveling to France in July to join over 400 singers in a concert in honor of the 75th anniversary of D-Day. The group will visit Normandy and Paris to take in the sights, learn about World War II history, and create a powerful performance honoring the heroes of war. Collaborations are also already in the works for the 2019-20 school year with the composition program at CCM and with the choral program at Xavier University.

Special congratulations to several students: -Max Perrino ’19, Chancellor Waye ’19, and Brendan Lucas ’20, for competing at the Xavier University Vocal Competition. Max Perrino earned 3rd place at the event.

- Max Vale ’19 and Reece Niederhausen ’21, who received phenomenal feedback and high ratings at the Ohio Music Educators Association solo competition this year.

And finally, a huge thank you to Dan Dery, Latin teacher and pianist extraordinaire, who offers so much of his time and talent to the choral ensembles throughout the year.

The Men in Black joined the singers from the Liturgical Music group during the Martin Luther King Assembly on January 25th.

On Friday, February 1st, Daniel Dorsey ’21 performed at the Huntington Convention Center of Cleveland in Cleveland, Ohio as a member of the cello section in the 2019 Ohio Music Educators Association (OMEA) Professional Development Conference All State Orchestra. Earlier this year Daniel had earned a seat at the 2018 OMEA Southwest Regional Orchestra and then advanced to the All State Orchestra.

During the spring concert on May 1st, three of the guitar ensemble performances were led by Adam Satorius, a student teacher from the University of Cincinnati. This concert also presented the first movement from Bach’s Violin Concerto No. 2 featuring Henry Baker ’20 on violin. Kaleb Williams ‘19 premiered his original composition La Familia del Fuego for solo guitar. A few of the Men in Black were recognized for their contribution to the St. X strings program especially Luke Black ’20 who has served as principal bassist for three years.

As in previous years, the Men in Black also provided music during Open House, the Mothers’ Club Boutique, and the President’s Dinner. Many of the string players also consistently serve as Liturgical Musicians during the all-school liturgies.

On June 4th Joel Martinez ’20, Jack Cooksey ’22, Johan Martinez ’20, Carl McKenzie ’20, and Kaleb Williams ’20 departed for a trip to Spain to perform as an electric string ensemble and travel with 15 other St. X students to Barcelona, Montserrat, Madrid, and Toledo.

Their mission in Spain was to explore the history of the guitar and the culture of Spain while sharing arrangements of music for violin, viola, bass, and guitar.

Year in Review

SPORTS The 2018-2019 school year was another successful year for the St. Xavier Athletic Department. The Bombers claimed the All Sports Trophy for the 8th consecutive year as it came down to the wire between St. X and Elder. The Bombers captured their 57th OHSAA title this year and capped the year off with a state title in Volleyball. See a recap for each sport below.

FALL CROSS COUNTRY – The Bombers ran well at several meets during the regular season, which included wins in the Moeller Primetime Invitational, the Tiffin Cross Country Invitational, and the St. Xavier Invitational. They placed 2nd at the Trinity Invitational in Louisville, Kentucky, a meet that draws many of the best teams from Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, and Tennessee. St. Xavier won the GCL Championship for the 8th straight year and all seven Bombers’ starters were voted All-GCL First Team or Second Team. Sophomore Nate Mountain won GCL Runner of the Year and head coach Andy Wietmarschen was named GCL Coach of the year. The Bombers then won the OHSAA Div. I District Championship and finished 2nd in the Regional Championship to qualify for the State Championship. They finished 4th at the OHSAA Div. I State Championship.

FOOTBALL – 2018 was another year of high expectations for the Bombers. The Bombers worked hard and made the playoffs after a very difficult 5-5 season. St. Xavier captured its first victory against Lakota West 34-0 at Paul Brown Stadium to kick off the season. From there they suffered a loss to Colerain (12-14), defeated Walnut Hills (41-7) and then dropped three in a row to Cathedral (14-20), Moeller (14-19) and Elder (26-51). The Bombers got back on track defeating La Salle (42-7), Football North out of Canada (38-19) and then losing a heartbreaker to Jesuit rival St. Ignatius (20-27). The Bombers ended the season in a must win situation for the playoffs and came out on top over Louisville St. Xavier 34-7. In the playoffs, the Bombers once again faced Colerain but this time at their home field. The Cardinals found a way to win as they took the game 9-35.

SOCCER – The 2018 Soccer Bombers finished the season 13-4-3 as District Champions. They finished the season ranked 2nd in the city and 10th in the state. The team was led by a talented group of seniors, including six players who will be continuing their soccer career in college: Will Bronsil (John Carroll University), Luke Rockwood (Hope College), Michael Wampler (University of Wisconsin), Chris Yu (College of Wooster), team MVP Craig Wellens (Xavier University) and GCL and Southwest Ohio’s Player of the Year Gino Geiser (Northern Kentucky University).

Seniors Nick Aronoff, Nick Greely, Matthew Sutton, and Trenten Toliver challenged the team to match their determination and effort.

WATER POLO – The 2018 season marked the program’s 8th as a Varsity team at St. Xavier. Across three competitive levels, the 50-member group played more than 100 games in Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania. The program again held its tournament at Coney Island’s Sunlite Pool hosting eight JV and 18 Varsity teams from Ohio, Michigan, Washington D.C. and Illinois. Both the JV and Varsity state tournament teams played competitively to close out the season.

Paul Splitt was named the new head coach after the 2018 season concluded and he looks to build upon the great foundation of St. X Water Polo.

WINTER BASKETBALL – The Varsity Basketball Bombers were led by Interim Coach and St. X alumnus Brian Kellett for the 18-19 season and went 10-12. After losing their first game at Lakota West, the Bombers bounced back and won four big games in a row over Princeton, Lakota East, Roger Bacon and West Clermont. Over Christmas break, they travelled to Atlanta for the St. Pius X Tournament where they faced some national competition winning one of their three games. On the road, the Bombers had big wins in February as they defeated Elder at the Pit and Covington Catholic. In the OHSAA tournament, the Bombers once again faced Princeton and came up just short in a hard fought contest 55-57.

After the season, a full search took place to name a full-time coach. After an extensive search, Mike Noszka from Wilmington was named the new head coach to lead the future of Bomber basketball.

BOWLING – The Varsity Bowling team finished the season with an 8-16 overall record and 6-12 in the GCL. On the individual side, Seniors Jeremy Roenker and Zach Saupe moved onto Districts as individuals and finished their seasons with finishes of 56th and 13th respectfully. The Bombers saw three varsity members make the GCL All-Star team. A season high game of 2782 came in the upset win against Elder. second round. The team graduates only three seniors and looks to return many players for a great run in the 2019-2020 season.

GOLF- The 2018 St. Xavier Golf Team undoubtedly overachieved all expectations this past season. Few in the know about golf in the city or state believed the team could rebuild after graduating 12 seniors from the 2017 season.

The Golfing Bombers were led by their one returning top five player, senior Oscar Zimmerman, who ultimately won back-toback GCL Player of the Year, back-to-back Enquirer All Stars, and this spring won The Enquirer’s Golf Athlete of the year. His play culminated in a 3rd place individual tie in the State Tournament as he led the Bombers to a tie for 2nd place team finish. In addition to Oscar, the team also featured two additional GCL 1st team players in Senior Henry Perry and Junior Jared DeVille.

The Varsity Golfing Bombers ended up with a combined dual match record for all squads of 29-6, won the GCL Championship by 20 shots over Elder for a 4th straight title, 2nd in the Cincinnati West Sectionals, 3rd in SWOH Districts, and 3rd in the OHSAA D1 State Championship. Varsity won four additional 18-hole Invitational events including the Jackson Polar Bear, Medina Walker Jones, New Richmond, and Best of the West. The team added 16 new par club scores from players including nine from Oscar Zimmerman, which moved him up to 3rd on the all-time list.

For 2019, seven of the top 10 Varsity Scoring Average athletes will return so St. Xavier should be poised to be able to have great achievements for the upcoming season.

SWIMMING – The 2017-2018 team was named the NISCA National Champion last summer. The 2018-2019 team surpassed expectations, producing another great season. They claimed the team’s 74th overall GCL Title where junior Kyle Seilkop won Swimmer of the Meet.

Fourteen Bombers were named to either All GCL 1st Team or All GCL 2nd team. St. Xavier won both the OHSAA Div. I Sectional (50th straight) and District (51st straight) Titles. They captured the program’s 40th overall OHSAA Div. I State Championship and 11th straight. The Medley Relay team of Nate Buse, Scott Sobolewski, Jean-Pierre Khouzam & Owen Taylor set a new team record. The 200 Free Relay team of John Paul Khouzam, Owen Taylor, Ian Van Gorp & Jean-Pierre Khouzam placed first in the State. Jean Pierre Khouzam placed first in State in the 100 butterfly – and also set a new team record. Scott Sobolewski lowered his own team record in the 100 Breaststroke. Nine individuals qualified for All-American recognition, and 10 members of the Class of 2019 were recognized as Academic All-Americans.

ICE HOCKEY – The Varsity Hockey team finished the season with a record of 23-10-1. St. Xavier had many successes throughout the season that included an undefeated league season in the Southwest Ohio High School Hockey League and a third straight league championship.

The Bombers also won the Elder Christmas Tournament Championship, while not losing a single game. The team had several individual accolades including senior goaltender Bailey Hammons being named to the All-Ohio Senior All-Star Team and Cincinnati Enquirer First Team, junior Noah Reidy was also named to the Cincinnati Enquirer First Team, and Coach Elliott Johnson was named Cincinnati Enquirer Hockey Coach of the Year. The season ended in the District tournament against the Olentangy Braves hockey team in the second round.

The team graduates only three seniors and looks to return many players for a great run in the 2019-2020 season.

WRESTLING – The wrestlers fought through season ending injuries from three seniors to end the season in a strong position. Younger wrestlers stepped up and met the challenge. Freshman LaVeall Trimble was a district qualifier. Jame Krusinski, Nolan Hatton and Vinny Bamonte were district alternates.

The team posted a dual meet record of 13-10 which included wins over Loveland, Princeton, Talawanda, Hamilton, and Milford. The team finished 17 of 35 in the prestigious Wheeling Park Duals tournament.

SPRING BASEBALL – The Bombers finished with a 13-12 overall record and 5-4 in the GCL South.

They finished in a three-way tie for first in the GCL South (Elder and Moeller) and swept the season series from Moeller for the first time since the GCL South adopted the current scheduling format of playing each opponent three times each. It was the Bombers second GCL championship in the last three years.

There were five Bombers on either the All GCL First or Second Teams (First Team: Juniors Eli Majick and Tucker Hundley; Second Team: Juniors William Jaun and Hank Thomas, and senior Sam LaRocco).

Eli Majick was named to the 2nd team All-City team by the Southwest Ohio Baseball Coaches’ Association, while teammates junior Hank Thomas and junior Tucker Hundley earned Honorable Mention All-City.

Four players committed to play college baseball during the 2018-19 school year: Junior Wyatt Hudepohl (University of Kentucky); Hank Thomas (Georgia Tech); Chet Larger (University of Indianapolis); and Ben Stacy (Walsh University).

LACROSSE – The Varsity Lacrosse Bombers finished the season with a 17-7 overall record while winning the 2019 Midwest Championship and finishing as 2019 OHSAA Division I State Runner Up. St. Xavier competed against the majority of the top teams in the Midwest and finished the season with the most difficult strength of schedule in the State of Ohio.

Eleven Bombers earned All Region, eight All State, and nine All Midwest awards. Charlie Williams, who will be attending Cleveland State University to continue his playing career, was selected as a 2019 US Lacrosse AllAmerican as well as First Team All Region and FOGO

of the Year for the State of Ohio. Also earning All State position player of the year were, Eddie Krumdieck (defense) and Charlie Hutchins (goalie). Gary Buczek was awarded Assistant Coach of the Year for the State of Ohio and Nate Sprong was selected as Midwest Coach of the Year.

RUGBY – The rugby team had a good year with more than 60 students participating. The Bombers secured wins against Lakota, Walnut Hills, Central Kentucky, Withrow, and Marian (IN). Our young men enjoyed a great trip to the Midwest tournament.

On senior day, the team continued the development of the South campus field with the opening of a new press box. The players can’t wait to get back out this fall for their 7 on 7 Olympic rugby season.

TRACK AND FIELD – The St. Xavier Track and Field team had one of the most successful seasons in recent memory. The 4x400 relay team of Jackson Scroggins, Jay Glenn, Alex Wimmel and Nic Manfroy qualified for the state championships in Columbus.

Sophomores Nate Mountain and Conor Bohrer qualified for the state championships in the 3200m run and ended up being the fastest sophomores in the state in the race. Tommy Walters also qualified for the state championships in the 800m run and ended up 10th in the state. Senior Matthew Hoak took 6th at the state and the 4x800 relay team made up of Nate Mountain, Tommy Walters, Nick Mills, and Matthew Hoak came up just short as they took 2nd place in the state.

TENNIS – The Bombers’ tennis team won their 52nd consecutive GCL South Title as they finished the season with a 22-2 overall record and 6-0 record in the GCL South playing one of the most difficult schedules in the state. They advanced to the OTCA Team Tournament Regional Semifinals (losing to eventual state champion Mason HS 1-4) and finished the season as the #3 ranked team in the State of Ohio according to the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association and the OhioTennisZone.com final polls. Junior Ronit Hiryur won the Sectional singles title and was the singles runner-up at the District and the 100th OHSAA Div. 1 State tennis tournament. Senior Max DeCurtins was the Sectional tournament runner-up in singles and advanced to the State tennis tournament where he eventually lost in the quarterfinal round.

The Bombers’ doubles team of Senior Nick Aronoff ’19 and sophomore Jimmy Gott advanced to the OHSAA Div. I District tournament while the top doubles team of sophomore Charlie Temming and freshman Preston Stearns won the OHSAA Div. I State Doubles title at the State Tournament.

Temming and Stearns won both the OHSAA Div. I Sectional and District Tournaments as well. The Bombers return seven members from the Varsity team for the Spring ’20 campaign and will be favored to contend for their fifth OTCA State team title.

VOLLEYBALL – The Volleyball Bombers finished the season with a 23-5 overall record and ended the season as Division 1 State Champions! It was a great way to cap off the 25th season of Bomber Volleyball. The Bombers beat Moeller to capture the title and also swept the series with them for the year 4-0. St. Xavier beat top ranked Hilliard Darby in the State-semi finals 3-0 to avenge their 0-3 loss to them earlier in the season.

From there, the Bombers couldn’t be stopped winning the championship in four games. St. Xavier finished in a three-way tie with Elder and Moeller for the GCL. Brian Mauch was GCL & Regional Player of the Year and also 1st team All State. Three other Bombers received GCL honors, two All State and four All Region.

2019 President’s Dinner St. Xavier High School benefactors and supporters gathered for the annual President’s Dinner on Tuesday, May 7.

President Tim Reilly ’76 welcomed guests to his first dinner before leading the evening of honors and awards.

As guests arrived, they were greeted by the melodic tones of the St. Xavier Jazz Band.

Rev. Thomas C. Manahan SJ and freshmen Tyler Goodall, Brady Rodgers and Euell Yohannes began the dinner with a prayer and guests enjoyed dinner music provided by the Strings Ensemble.

The choral group Ensemble X performed the National Anthem and then delighted guests with the musical performances of the song “Joshua Fit the Battle” and “Dock of the Bay.”

St. X Board Chair Mrs. Ann Berger addressed guests giving them a brief update on the school and thanked all those in attendance for their dedication to the students of St. Xavier High School. She then thanked Mr. Reilly for a wonderful first year of strong leadership.

The evening ended with two very special award presentations. Mrs. Janet M. Reder and Mr. Paul J. Rieselman ’71 were both recognized and received the 2019 Magis Award.

Mr. Steve Hils ’71 received the 2019 Insignis Award. Following his award he was presented with the news of an endowment that was created and funded in his name- The Steve Hils ’71 Scholarship Fund.

The evening concluded with a note of thanks from Mr. Reilly to all in attendance for their support not only financially, but through prayer and volunteer service as well.

Faculty Focus Fr. Tom Manahan SJ

Fr. Tom Manahan SJ was born in Rochester, Minnesota; he is the seventh of nine children (five boys and four girls). After graduating from the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities and Indiana University Bloomington and working several years in corporate advertising and marketing at The Kahler Corporation and General Mills, Inc., he entered the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) in 1985 at the age of 30. He professed vows in 1987, was ordained a deacon in 1994, and was ordained to the priesthood in 1995.

As a Jesuit, he has worked in the education, retreat, and parish ministries. He served in the College of Business Administration and Campus Ministry at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska from 1994 through 2003. He was missioned to Marquette University High School and Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 2003. He worked in administration, campus ministry, and theological education at Marquette High for fifteen years. In August 2018, Fr. Manahan arrived at St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati, Ohio to continue his ministry in high school education. Fr. Manahan’s younger brother, Chris, is a Jesuit and he serves as the Director of the Jesuit Retreat House in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

How has your first year at St. Xavier compared to what you expected?

Everyone – the Jesuit community, the Religion and Campus Ministry departments, and the St. X community – has been so welcoming to me!

“Overwhelmed” has been my word for this year. The larger student body, more expansive building footprint, and new courses and processes have stretched this 64-year old Jesuit! Oftentimes I have encouraged others to leave their comfort zone in order to learn and grow as a person. This year has been a year to practice what I have preached. “Change” is always a challenge for this homebody, but the gifts and graces of this St. X community and experience have been greater than the day-to-day challenges. God is good… and faithful!

What is the most rewarding thing about being part of the St. Xavier community?

I am engaged in a mission that is important and enduring. I am grateful to all the teachers, coaches, Jesuits, staff members, and administrators who have preceded me. I am humbled by striving to sustain and strengthen the Catholic, Jesuit identity and mission today in a way that makes a difference in our world for years to come. My experience in Jesuit education has taught me that I may not see the “results” today, but the seeds ultimately bear fruit years later in and through the lives of our alumni.

What is so special about St. Xavier?

Our past…our purpose…our people…our place…and our potential for good…are truly distinctive. St. X features a history and tradition that are remarkable. Such longevity and strength provide a foundation that grounds and inspires all that we do. Our faith-based educational focus is developing the whole person and forming men for others. We could not embark on this mission without open, talented, and dedicated teachers and coaches who embrace that mission by living out the cura personalis spirit each day. In addition, we have students and families who are open to growing in and through the rigor, opportunities, and challenges of the St. X experience or St. Xperience.

How would you describe the St. Xavier Advantage?

I have been amazed by the unity and loyalty of St. X’s alumni, parents, and students. Whether it is joining hands to pray the “Our Father,” standing shoulder-to-shoulder to sing the “Alma Mater,” wearing St. X spirit wear, or supporting the annual Phonathon, members of the St. X community – past and present, near and far – are committed and connected. The Long Blue Line is real; it is a line of grateful and humble people, striving to love and to serve in all things for the greater glory of God (AMDG).

Graduation

On May 30, the Class of 2019 was welcomed into the Long Blue Line of St. Xavier alumni. The 385 young men ceremoniously followed the members of the Class of 1969 into the Cintas Center for the graduation ceremony upholding the tradition of the 50-year anniversary class leading the procession.

Principal Terry Tyrrell welcomed the graduates, alumni, parents and family members supporting the members of the class on this special occasion. He encouraged the graduates to continue to live the Jesuit motto of Ad majorem Dei gloriam, for the Greater Glory of God. Cameron Shahrooz ’19 spoke on behalf of the senior class encouraging them to set the world on fire! St. Xavier retiring faculty member Mr. Paul Rieselman ’71 spoke to the class.

He encouraged them to always keep their heads up and to strive for the Magis each and every day.

James Michael Lafferty, ’81 (Ron Stegmann and Jim Ott) I loved my time in X and really appreciated all my teachers who I recognized as being hugely dedicated.

I guess 2 particularly stood out. The first was Ron Stegmann, who was my religion teacher and had worked with Mother Theresa in Calcutta, secondly would be Jim Ott. What I have learned living outside the US for the past 30 years, and recruiting from campuses all over the globe, is how few educational systems really teach critical thinking and problem solving. They master teaching rote memorization and formulae, but often fail to teach those skills that help people cope with a fast-changing world. I learned the huge edge St. X gave me as I sat with young people and interviewed them and worked with them, how I appreciated the education I received. And a key element was critical thinking.

I took Jim Ott’s Communism Class in probably 1979 or 1980 when the world was in the height of the cold war. Even my father was upset I was taking this class and worried I might “convert”. It was eye opening to study one’s enemy and learn about communism in a factual manner. We met people from the Revolutionary Communist Party of Cincinnati and debated with them. It really opened my eyes to critical thinking and how to go beyond the dogma of what you hear in the news, to actually getting the facts and assessing things objectively. To this day I so admire the school for offering such a radical class in that era, and Jim Ott for teaching it. It really was a pioneering concept back then.

The St. X advantage for me is simple—We become a product of our environment. That school surrounds kids with the best in the world. And it forces you to rise to the occasion and become the best version of yourself. I entered St. X as a good student but somewhat of a slacker. I could get away with it in grade school. Entering X shook me up. Everybody was smart. Everybody was good. I had to work hard to make honor roll every semester. It made me work and it made me more disciplined and better.

Looking back, it is no surprise that when I later went to University I finished in the top of my class. By then I was already infused with the principles of hard work, discipline, and rigor. And they would go to serve me not only in university, but in a corporate career spanning 5 continents and over 20 countries. It all started at X. I owe the school so very much.

Robert E. Carroll ’76 (Paul Lammermeier, Community Service) Among the many dedicated faculty and staff, to whom I am so grateful for my St. Xavier education and experience, Paul Lammermeier is a lifelong example of service to others.

Paul arrived at St. X for my 1974-75 junior year, to launch our Community Service Program – both inside and outside the classroom. I was in his inaugural, and memorable, class that had the firstyear challenges of any “start-up” business. Everything was new, many things were untested, and we enjoyed lots of freedom that year. He placed a lot of trust in us to represent St. X in the community.

Fortunately, we were never under the “surveillance” of today’s widespread social media.

We never lacked for assignments of tutoring at nearby elementary schools, working with patients at Drake Hospital (which by coincidence was during the year that Jack Nicholson starred in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest), and many other opportunities that Paul found throughout the city. Interest in the new course certainly benefitted from the chance for us to hop in the car and escape from campus for a period or two. I remember more of our “on the road” experiences, than anything that I can recall from actual community service classes. Paul was probably so busy juggling the fledgling program, that there was minimal time for classroom course work. He likely had no budget for an assistant, or other support, in those initial years.

These were also the years that Pedro Arrupe, SJ as the Father General of the Jesuits introduced his “Men For Others” charge, to the global Jesuit legions.

In 1988, Paul Lammermeier left St. X, bound for Lima, Peru to begin the successive founding of Casa Javier, Casa Ignacio and Casa Teresa – homes (similar to the Boys Hope Girls Hope model in Cincinnati) to support and nurture young men and women, many of whom were Peruvian orphans.

After more than three decades of Paul’s (and his team’s) tireless service, Associacion Casa Javier is a vital part of the Peruvian community, providing a “home” setting for young men and women, who have been blessed my Paul’s selfless energy, enthusiasm, and love for others. His example, to all who are his students and his friends, is priceless. He is the community service “booster shot”, for those who have seen the fruits of his hard work.

Each Spring, the locally organized (by many St. Xavier Alumni) Paul Lammermeier Foundation hosts a fundraising dinner for Paul and the work of the Associacion in Lima. When I am fortunate to see Paul during his annual visits to Cincinnati, I am more humbled now, than I ever would have been in 1974-75, to see his embodiment of Magis – to be more tomorrow than what we are today. To have known Paul Lammermeier, since my junior year, is one of so many lifelong St. Xavier Advantages, for me and for my family.

Student Spotlight Jackson Demmler ’19

Jackson Demmler ’19 truly took advantage of the variety of cocurriculars and opportunities at St. Xavier to figure out his future while attending St. Xavier. Throughout his four-year career he was involved in Engineering club, Robot-X, Bring Change to Mind, Student Council and ESPX Student Broadcasting Club. He was also very involved in community service through Special Olympics, Big Buddies and LADD (at Living Arrangements for the Developmentally Disabled.)

What are you plans for the future?

I will be attending the E.W Scripps program at Ohio University and plan on majoring in Broadcast Journalism.

Do you have any other family members in the Long Blue Line?

Before me, the only other member of my extended family to attend St. Xavier High School is my older brother, Sam Demmler ’17.

Why did you decide to attend St. X?

I chose St. X for many reasons. The one reason that hit me the hardest was that I felt I would be much happier at St. X than any other school. The fact that my brother went here at the time helped influence my decision because he could help guide me.

However, when I shadowed St. X, I felt a stronger welcoming presence than any other school. The reputation of St. X also made a huge impact.

Talk about your experiences in the classroom and in cocurriculars.

My classroom experience varies with the teacher. Most freshman teachers express a much more structured environment whereas some of the upper classrooms have a more relaxed environment. The education 18

experience is very positive and the extracurricular experiences were just as helpful, as those helped open new doors to show me potential job opportunities for my future. Through the ESPX Broadcasting Club I was the “Student Voice of the Bombers,” a title that I came to be very proud of over the years.

In terms of experiences with my classmates, in and out of class are very similar. The overall experience is very positive where I can converse and enjoy my time with friends.

What words of wisdom do you have for future members of the Long Blue Line?

To the Future Members of the Long Blue Line I would say is be smart with your time and use it wisely. I am specifically referring to Free Bells. One of the best thing St. X helps with is improving one’s time management. Another (more important) lesson to share is: Don’t be afraid to get involved. You should not let opportunities pass you by because you may never get them again. While St. X has helped me manage my time better, I truly love St. X because it has gave me many opportunities to know myself and discover a what I truly want to do in the future.

Describe what the St. Xavier Advantage means to you.

To me, the St. X Advantage is summed up to be the fact that though St. X is challengeing, in the end, the reward of graduating a prestigious school outweigh all troubles you face along the way. Many people know the name “St. Xavier High School” and I feel graduating from St. X will get me very far in the world.

Another school year is in the books! Another group of young men join the ranks of graduates from St. Xavier High School. As we wish the class of 2019 good luck, we thank them for their efforts for the past four years. We know they are prepared to take the next steps in their lives as they follow the words of St. Ignatius to go and “set the world on fire!”

Transition continues to happen at St. Xavier as our remaining students take another step towards their respective graduating year, while we prepare to welcome in the class of 2023 to the Long Blue Line of St. Xavier High School. With this transition we also say “until we meet again” to some wonderful co-workers who have left their incredible mark on this school as well as on so many students and co-workers.

This year’s list is larger than normal as the following retired either during or at the end of the school year: Marguerite Bourgeois, Steve Bradley, Tim Cronin, Dave Cappel, Dave Clapp, George Day, Diane Engber, Terry Hale, Dennis O’ Brien, Fr. Ed Pigott ’55, Janet Reder, Paul Rieselman ’71, Marty Roberts ’76, Star Vondrell and Gil Wendling. Just think of the thousands of young men and hundreds of co-workers these people impacted as they forged their lives’ path just like the paths on which the Class of 2019 embarks. Just as things change, the mission of this great school stays solid, although it is much better for having so many so dedicated people through the years.

Our part of the mission in the Advancement Department will evolve too. We have the challenge each year of hitting our Annual Fund goals. The Annual Fund is the backbone of our yearly fundraising efforts and goes hand in hand with our Loyola Club Student Sponsorship program, X-Travaganza, the Annual Fund Student Phonathon and the Walk for X. Thank you so much to the thousands of you who answer our annual calls for support. Your yearly answer to our requests is what makes St. Xavier High School different from so many other schools in the area.

Our ongoing drive to build our endowment will not waver. The vast majority of that endowment ensures that we can help to provide tuition assistance to those that need help to attend St. Xavier. Down the road the goal is to have an endowment at a level that creates a tuition decrease rather than increase! To do this, we need your

This will go hand in hand with another recognition wall honoring those who have remembered St. Xavier in their will or estate plans, thus becoming a member of our Fr. Wieber Society. If you have done so and have not let us know, please do! This helps in our financial plans for the school and we want to be able to thank and recognize your generosity like we have for the 298 current members.

A new initiative is to endow programs at St. Xavier. The first program that we are looking to endow is Theatre Xavier. What a tribute to TX, a program that has touched so many, that we want to make sure that this program lives on forever. If you would like more information about that effort contact Steve Specht in our Advancement Department.

I can assure you that our mission of assisting young men in their formations as leaders and Men For Others through rigorous college preparation in the tradition of the Jesuits will not change. To do this we continue to stand on the shoulders of the Long Blue Line. You are a part of what happens here each and every day and we cannot thank you enough for your unwavering support!

Nick Vehr ’77 was recently recognized by the Cincinnati chapter of the American Advertising Federation for its most prestigious honor – the Silver Medal Award – for his contributions to the community and work to advance the advertising industry. Vehr founded Vehr Communications, a fully integrated marketing communications agency, in 2007 after more than 20 years of community stewardship and leadership. Vehr shone a spotlight on our city and all its potential when he sought to make Cincinnati the world stage for the 2012 summer Olympics. And while that vision never came to fruition, he spent the summer of 2012 overseeing the World Choir Games, a two-week, global choral competition in which more than 15,000 participants from 64 countries spread music, culture and goodwill across Greater Cincinnati.

Mattew J. Miller ’89 from the Lakota Local School District won this year’s Communication Technology Award for Superintendents for using technology and social media to engage district staff and other education stakeholders. He is the first in the state to receive a national award for the creative use of communication technology.

90’s Tim Hunter ’94 designs water (and sometimes fire) features at WET in Los Angeles, California. He designed the centerpiece water feature at Jewel Changi Airport in Singapore.

Known as the Rain Vortex, the feature sculpts rainwater from Singapore’s frequent thunderstorms into a 130 foot (40 meter) tall spectacle within Jewel’s lushly-planted ‘Forest Valley.’ Water is collected and recirculated back to the roof for continuous operation between storms, and water combines with choreographed fog, light, projections and music for nightly performances. One of his original design visions for the feature was to bend the surrounding architecture by Safdie Architects into the Rain Vortex. The multi-disciplinary and multi-year design process was highly collaborative and resulted in a neverbeforeseen water showpiece seamlessly integrated into its surroundings.

10’s continued Congratulations to Scottie Emmert ’15 on earning the University of Cincinnati Presidential Leadership Medal of Excellence. Emmert maintains a perfect 4.0 grade point average and scored in the 99 percentile on his Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). He is a Cincinnatus scholar and last year was named a Barry Goldwater Scholar.

Emmert is part of a team of researchers at Cincinnati Children’s tasked with finding a better treatment for pediatric hydrocephalus.

Congratulations to David Leisring ’15 who was named University of Dayton’s 2019 Male Presidential Scholar-Athlete. The award encompasses so much more than just academics, and David is a great representative of the Flyer football program.

Congratulations to Chris Reischel ’17, who was the fastest 2019 Boston Marathon finisher under the age of 21. He completed the event in a blazing fast time of 2:39.
