From the President Overwhelming Feeling is Gratitude That was the headline chosen by the Enquirer for their thoughtful story announcing that I would be leaving St. X in the summer of 2018. I am incredibly grateful for the experiences I’ve had over the years, both during my years here as a scholastic in 1991-1994 and my time as president since 2009. I am grateful for the wonderful people I have met and whom I now call friends. St. Xavier is a warm community of students, teachers, staff members, alumni, parents and benefactors; and I consider myself lucky to be a member.

So the other feeling I’m also experiencing these days is a kind of peaceful sadness. I’m going to miss everything about being at St. X. At the same time, I am peaceful because I trust the Society of Jesus. A monk knows that he will die in the same monastery he enters as a young man. When I joined the Jesuits, I knew that I would be asked to pick up and move every few years and put down roots in a new place. St. Ignatius is said to have asked Jesuits to live their lives “with one foot in the air,” always ready to take another step down the path of God’s greater service and

praise. In each of my Jesuit assignments, I have always found God there waiting for me. And I am confident that I will find him again in my next.

In the meantime, I get to spend another year of my life at St. X! And I want to make the most of it. Initiatives will continue to help us be “the best at getting better.” As I mentioned in the spring magazine, a group of teachers from Science, Art, Engineering and Computer Science have been collaborating with the Library and Information Technology staffs to design a MakerSpace which will occupy a section of our library. A MakerSpace is filled with innovative technologies like 3-D printers and more that foster a culture of inquiry and innovation.

We are building phase one this summer and will bring you pictures in our magazine next fall.

We’ll also press on in our efforts to build the scholarship endowments, so that St. X can continue to serve an economically diverse group of talented students, as we have since 1831. I am especially grateful to the Gardner Family Foundation for their challenge grant to establish a scholarship in my name (see page 17.) Like Harry and Linda Fath and so many other generous benefactors to St. X, there is nothing I would rather have my name on than a fund that gives poor and middle-class boys access to the incomparable St. X experience.

I thank God and I thank you, for what these past eight years have been and what the coming one will be!

Men in Black Strings Concert a Bittersweet End to the Year Traditional sounds of Handel and rocking guitar riffs of Henley were part of the program that featured 54 of St. Xavier’s finest musicians.

The freshman showed off the skills they learned over the year with traditional tunes “Josephine’s Waltz” and “Rights of Man” and the guitar ensemble brought down the house with their rendition of “Hotel California” by The Eagles. The Strings Ensemble performed a series of Romanian folk dances before Director of Strings, Isaac Watras, took the stage to announce some special awards.

After thanking the Music Boosters for all their help over the past year Mr. Watras gave out the following special awards:

After the awards the Seniors took the stage to perform a beautiful song — “Amelia’s Waltz”— as their last performance as a class. The entire Strings Ensemble took the stage to end the show with Handel’s “Finale from the Water Music” and a reprise of “Josephine’s Waltz.”

The show was a wonderful way to end the school year and special thanks to Mr. Watras for his dedication to our students! Bravo!

2017 Senior Class Gift An outstanding rate of participation was achieved by this year’s Senior Class! Thanks to the generosity and hard work of the Class of 2017, 94% of seniors gave to the class gift and raised a total $18,043.22!

The money will go towards funding a need-based scholarship for an incoming class of 2021 freshman.

Special thanks goes to the Senior Development Chairmen who showed great leadership this year by explaining the benefits of giving and encouraging their fellow classmates to give. Congratulations to the Class of 2017 – truly being Men for Others!

Great Turnout for Father/Son Communion Breakfast!

Over 416 Fathers and Sons attended the Annual Father/Son Communion Breakfast on May 21 at St. Xavier High School.

Mass was celebrated by Fr. Howe in the chapel of the Holy Companions and was followed by breakfast in the Cafeteria.

St. X Brings Benefactors and Students Together for Lunch St. Xavier High School continued a new tradition of holding a series of informal lunches designed to connect benefactors that assist in funding tuition assistance through a named endowment or through a Loyola Club sponsorship with the students who are the recipients of their generosity.

Seniors Headed to the Military On Monday, May 15, St. Xavier recognized four seniors who have accepted an appointment with a military academy or who have received a four-year ROTC scholarship.

Military representatives spoke on behalf of the respective branches and presented the seniors with their official offers of appointment/scholarships.

Success with Everything But The House Thank you to everyone who participated in the first ever Everything But the House auction with St. Xavier. This year the auction collected 314 items and earned $25,259. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the 40%

of St. Xavier High School students receiving tuition assistance which totaled more than a $3.9 million need for the 2016-2017 school year. Thank you!

Spring Choral Concert Delivers Strong Performances It’s always hard to say goodbye to our seniors, but the Spring Choral Concert is always a great send off! The evening was filled with one show-stopping performance after another and many strong soloists were featured within the songs!

The X-Men started off the evening’s program with “Cantate Domino” and Mozart’s “Ave verum corpus.” They even had accompaniment by St. Xavier’s newest musical group, the Percussion Ensemble, on a Haitian song “Pye Aleman.” The Percussion Ensemble, led by Mr. Dave Thomas, also performed “Excalibur” as their concert debut.

Ensemble X showed off their impressive vocal range with performances of “Good Old A Cappella,” a more traditional version of “Cantate Domino,” “The Long Day Closes” and the spiritual “Joshua.”

Choral Director Dr. Jeff Stern announced awards for the past year and the following students were recognized:

The Oscar for Best Event Goes to...

X-TRAVAGANZA! On Saturday, March 11, guests were treated to a red carpet affair at X-Travaganza 2017: HOLLYWOOD NIGHTS – Lights, Camera, AXtion! From the welcome marquee, red carpet and Oscar statues to the guests in fabulous gowns and debonair tuxedos enjoying Beverly Hills Bubbly, this annual fundraiser for St. Xavier offered an A-list experience while raising funds to benefit the students.

The 44th Annual X-Travaganza weekend kicked off on Friday, March 10 with Opening Party 2017: A REEL PARTY. Opening Party Chairs Christine and David Dauenhauer and Julie and Gary Shipley welcomed guests to the popcorn and movie poster-decorated Berning Gym. The St. Xavier Marching Bombers’ Drumline entertained the crowd as guests enjoyed the delicious Lenten buffet dinner, dropped tickets into the Basket Raffle and bid on Silent Auction items. Parents of the Freshmen Class of 2021 were welcomed to the St. X community by Fr. Howe and Principal Terry Tyrrell, who reinforced St. X’s commitment to the incoming freshman class, the importance of the summer study skills classes and early involvement in the numerous activities available at St. X.

As the gourmet dinner was served, the fast-paced excitement of the Live Auction kicked off with auctioneer Mr. Lance Walker as the emcee. Live Auction packages included trips to Paris and LA, a concert suite to Faith Hill and Tim McGraw, Chicago Cubs rooftop tickets, Harlow and Tillie, the X-Travaganza puppies, golf packages, Hamilton Broadway tickets and many other fantastic items.

Thanks to the generosity of the St. Xavier community, X-Travaganza 2017 raised more than $850,000 to benefit our students! Thank you to X-Travaganza Director Cathy Cionni and her staff, X-Travaganza Chairs Lynne and Tom Donnelly and Shannon and Mike Grause, Opening Party Chairs Christine and David Dauenhauer and Julie and Gary Shipley, as well as the hundreds of volunteers, donors, sponsors, supporters and attendees who made X-Travaganza 2017 a blockbuster success!

On Saturday night March 11, X-Travaganza Chairs Lynne and Tom Donnelly and Shannon and Mike Grause rolled out the red carpet to welcome guests to HOLLYWOOD NIGHTS: Lights, Camera, AXtion! in the Ellis Gym. Guests mingled and enjoyed cocktails and

7th Annual Taste of Diversity Celebrates Our Multicultural World Our 7th Annual Taste of Diversity in May was a festive, multicultural mix of great food, amazing performances and fun!

Parents Across Cultures and the Foreign Language Department host this annual event to celebrate the diverse cultures our students represent and to share all the wonderful attributes that makes a culture unique and special.

Students prepare weeks ahead of time creating 3-D displays highlighting a country’s unique culture, which often includes historical facts, food, costumes and photos/videos! This year’s celebration was no different and included displays for 28 different countries/cultures including: Indonesia, Malaysia, China, Peru, Colombia, France, Russia, Argentina, Mexico, Germany, US (New Orleans), Canada, Luxemburg, Serbia, Greece and many more.

We are proud to celebrate our multicultural community and work towards a unified world! Thank you to all the faculty/staff, students, parents and attendees who made this a spectacular event!

St. X Welcomes Back Alumni for the Young Alumni Career Forum On Friday March 1, Alumni came back to St. X to be part of the 2nd Annual Young Alumni Career Forum. The Forum was created to allow students to interact with Bombers grads, who are newer to their fields and can give students more recent perspective on how they got to their current position.

The informal event was kicked off by the Alumni introducing themselves and then breaking off into broad groups by profession.

Engineering, Medicine, Business/Finance and Legal were just a few of the professions represented.

Just over 90 students participated and asked for information on a number of topics including college majors, value of internships, typical days and career paths for the various professions.

Thanks go out to all the Alumni who participated and especially to Young Alumni Committee Chairman Patrick Berning ’08, who organized the Alumni coming back to the event, and Director of Alumni Relations, Will Reilly ’09, who arranged the event.

University of Cincinnati Cancer Panel Discussion Educates Students St. Xavier hosted a panel discussion on Cancer Prevention and Careers in Medicine that included new UC President, Dr. Neville Pinto and St. Xavier grad Dr. William Barrett ’78, Director of the University of Cincinnati Cancer Institute. The panel discussion was moderated by former Olympian and author Julie Isphording.

Dr. Pinto quickly ingratiated himself to the students by saying how much he appreciates the students that choose UC after graduating from St. Xavier. He told the students a personal story about how he connected with Physics in high school and knew that science would be his path for the foreseeable future. He encouraged the students to choose a path that they have 6

passion for and then they will be fulfilled by their work. He also explained to students that science is perceived as only technology and gadgets, but that success in science is based on both technological gains and the human passion for science.

Dr. William Barrett also gave his personal career path story telling the students that a stint working in the emergency room as a college student helped him make his decision to follow medicine. He urged the students to be Men for Others and to not only work for success but to work to help others along the way.

Our students asked a number of insightful questions that resulted in discussion revolving

around the topics of cancer prevention, the changes in cancer treatments and the possibility of a future cure for cancer.

Our thanks go out to Dr. Pinto, Dr. Barrett, and Ms. Isphording for visiting with our students and to our Health and Physical Education Departments for arranging this panel discussion!

Words From The Principal Terrence Tyrrell

People often ask me, “What makes St. Xavier High School so special?”

It is a great question and at the heart of who we are. How do we explain the devotion of our alumni, the passion of our faculty and staff, the pride of our parents and the great spirit of our students’ year in and year out?

What separates St. X and makes it special is the graduates it produces.

Is it the number of National Merit finalists, the high ACT average, the large amount of scholarship dollars our graduates receive, the number of state championships our athletic teams earn or the awards our students in theater or music win? While they are all outstanding accomplishments, they do not provide the answer.

What separates St. X and makes it special is the graduates it produces. Young men who grow tremendously over four years, in body, mind and spirit, and who are challenged to be their best, to be formed as leaders and Men for Others through rigorous college preparation in the Jesuit tradition.

Every year, parents of graduates thank me, in person or through email, for St. Xavier’s role in the formation of their son. Here is one example of many that essentially have the same message:

It is hard for us to describe the many different areas that we have seen [our son] grow. He actively looks for community service opportunities…He morphed from letting others take the lead to seeking out numerous leadership roles and opportunities. [He] learned to confront difficult challenges head on and the humility to seek out others (teachers, friends, classmates) for help in order to be successful.

His mission trip to Ecuador during the summer between his Junior and Senior year was impactful from a variety of perspectives. [He] truly learned what it means to see the face of Christ in others, be it in a 90-year-old man suffering from Hansen’s Disease, or in the faces of children playing soccer on school playgrounds. He also learned how blessed we are and fortunate we have it in the US. He was able to see and experience poverty and conditions that do not exist in the US. Yet, the people he met were happy, friendly, and respectful, plus felt a deep sense of gratitude to God for their family and their possessions. Seeing this joy first-hand without any of the trappings (video games, cell phones, cars, clothes, etc.) will be a life-long lesson for him.

What makes the graduates of St. Xavier so special is the men they become: men who will accomplish great things in their chosen professional field, but also give back to their community. What makes St. Xavier so special is being part of the foundation of faith and family that provides young men an opportunity to discover who they are meant to be. As we celebrate the graduation of the St. Xavier Class of 2017, I am proud of the men they have become and can’t wait to see what they will accomplish.

Year in Review THEATRE XAVIER (TX) Theatre Xavier has had a very exciting year. The shows were well attended, especially by students! Student tickets sales broke new records this year for both the fall and spring shows.

In the fall, Theatre Xavier wowed audiences with its production of The Lord of the Flies. Members of the St. Xavier choir contributed to the outstanding performance.

St. Xavier thespians provided the usual plethora of talented actors/actresses, gorgeous melodies and stunning scenery in the spring performance of My Fair Lady.

TX joined the International Thespian Society which means, starting with next season, TX will be competing on a national level with schools from around the country.

They also announced the creation of XBOX, a place for theatre students to work on more experimental theatre. The first XBOX show will be an original

piece which will be performed at the 2018 Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland!

Most notably, they added the fantastic Elizabeth Harris as co-director of Theatre Xavier. Harris directed her first show for TX with My Fair Lady, which was a resounding success.

BANDS The Marching Bombers had an extremely successful season. Their opening show entitled Wheels, featured the songs “Vehicle,” “Low Rider,” and “Car Wash.” The band was proud to support the football team all the way to the state championship.

The St. Xavier Drum Line had a great year and continued their tradition of community service with performances for the Buddy Walk for Down Syndrome, the Butterfly Walk for Cancer Free Kids, and the Walk to Defeat ALS. They continue to be a big X-Travaganza auction item for a performance at a private party dinner event catered by Smoq BBQ. The Jazz Ensemble A performed for Open House, the Christmas Concert, President’s Dinner, Band Spring Concert, and the 18th Annual Michael Benson Concert, which featured renownd alto sax player Charlie Young.

Alto Sax player Peter Bradbury ’20, Bassoonist Andrew Lu ’20, Clarinetist Ryan Chen ’19 and French Horn player Jean Pierre Baillely ’18 were selected to perform with the Southwest Ohio Catholic High School Honor Band.

The Wind Ensemble and Jazz Ensemble A had excellent performances at Festival Disney in April.

In its second year, the Percussion Ensemble developed, expanded and performed in the Spring Choral Concert and joined Jazz Ensemble B, Wind Ensemble, and Jazz Ensemble A for the Spring Band Concert which was the culminating event of the year for the band program.

Arts and Services Wrap Up

STRINGS

The choirs at St. Xavier wowed audiences this year once again. They performed extremely successful fall and spring concerts at St. Xavier, along with a touching Christmas Dinner and Christmas Concert performances.

The St. Xavier High School string ensemble, Men in Black, had a great school year. The Fall String Recital welcomed the string players from the class of 2020. The Men in Black joined the St. X Jazz Band and choirs for a school-wide Christmas Concert.

The singing voices of the choir were found all throughout the city as they sang in the Men’s Chorus Festival concert with Xavier University, with the Cincinnati Boychoir, at Anderson High School and at Christ Church Cathedral.

The voices of the select group, Ensemble X, performed the National Anthem at a football game, at the Mothers’ Club Christmas event, Walk for Hope, the St. Xavier President’s Dinner, Academic Awards Night and the National Anthem at St. Xavier Night at the Cincinnati Reds.

Both the X-Men and Ensemble X groups earned top rating (“Superior”) at Festival Disney in April. Ensemble X also took home the “Best in Class” award for top men’s ensemble at the Festival. Chancellor Waye ’19 also took home a top soloist award for his performance in “For the Longest Time” by Billy Joel.

Other accolades throughout the year include: • All singers participating in OMEA solo competitions received top ratings.

• Nate Wilkens ’17 was a finalist in the Overture Awards competition in voice, and was also a member of the Ohio All-State Choir.

• JT Ruhnke ’18 was selected to be part of a choral ensemble that performed at Carnegie Hall in February.

• X-Men skyped with composer Alec Schumacker from Hawaii.

They discussed his work, gained his feedvback and ask about his composition process and experiences.

Finally, special thanks to Dan Dery, who has served as choral accompanist the whole school year!

After the Christmas break, musicians from St. X met at Elder High School for the Ohio Music Educators Association Solo and Ensemble Adjudicated Event. St. X presented 20 student performances and received ten ratings of 1 (the highest possible score), nine ratings of 2, and one rating of 3 (out of 5).

These performances were a mixture of violin, viola, cello, bass, guitar, piano, voice, and instrumental ensembles.

The Men in Black traveled to Orlando, Florida with the band and choir students during spring break to participate in the Disney Performing Arts Festival. Shortly after this trip, the Men in Black returned to the stage at St. X for the Spring Strings Concert. This concert featured solos from Bryan Yan ’19, Brooks Nieberding ’18, and William Shoaf ’17 as well as an electric guitar ensemble performance lead by Sam Smith ’18.

In addition to these performances the Men in Black also provided music during Open House, the Mothers’ Club Boutique and the President’s Dinner.

SERVICE Once again this year, more than 80% of the St. Xavier student body participated in community service, proving once again they are true Men for Others.

• The Junior Big Brothers Program paired 125 Big Brothers with Little Brothers.

• The Big Buddies program had almost 200 students changing lives.

• Community Service classes had 200 students enrolled. Once each week, these students leave school as part of class to volunteer at various service sites.

• The Big Buddies/Big Brothers Car Wash took place in mid-September at five sites around the Greater Cincinnati Area with more than 220 students participating.

• The After School Community Action Program (C.A.P) had 150 students involved.

• The Saturday Morning Service Program worked with 375 students.

• More than 55 students participated in Special Olympics.

• The St. Joseph Home Program sent 55 students to be with others in need.

This year’s Canned Food Drive collected nearly 175,000 pounds of food: • Food was delivered directly to 600 families in need including two Appalachian communities.

• About 25 different social service agencies came to St. X to get food for their food pantries.

This summer about 140 students will go on 11 Mission Trips.

With the expansion of service programs this has necessitated finding more and more chaperones. There are now more than 150 parent volunteers involved in the program.

Year in Review The St. Xavier Bombers’ Athletic teams enjoyed great success during the 2016-2017 school year which will go down as one of the best in school history. St. Xavier captured the GCL South All Sports Trophy for the 6th consecutive year, finishing 10 points ahead of second place LaSalle. The Bombers won 4 State Championships (3 OHSAA titles) and continue to hold the 2nd spot for most team championships in OHSAA history (54).

CROSS COUNTRY

SOCCER

The Bombers had a great regular season that was highlighted by winning the St. Xavier Invitational on their home turf. The school also hosted the GCL Championship Meet at the last minute and the Bombers protected home turf again by taking home the GCL South Championship for the 6th straight year led by senior Chris Reischel who took home 1st place individually. The Bombers used that momentum to win the OHSAA Div. I District Meet at Voice of America Park and the OHSAA Div. I Regional Meet at Troy HS. St. Xavier finished 3rd at the State Championship Meet led by junior Peter Dauenhauer who finished 20th in the race.

The soccer Bombers played to a 9-5-2 regular season record and finished 2nd in the GCL with a 4-1-1 record. St. Xavier took home runner–up in the annual Jesuit Cup at the beginning of the season where they lost to eventual State Champion, St. Ignatius, by a score of 1-0. The Bombers hosted a home playoff game where they took down Wilmington by a score of 8-0 and won their OHSAA Div. I Sectional Title by defeating Fairfield by a score of 3-1. St. Xavier was led by a trio of seniors, Jacob Huber, Josh Neal and Ben Piller, who were selected to the SWOSSCA All Star team.

BOWLING

FOOTBALL The Bombers finished the regular season at 5-5 and needed a win in the last week of the regular season to secure their spot in the Division I Region 4 playoffs. After playing one of the toughest schedules in the country, the Bombers were well prepared for the playoffs. They beat Fairfield in round 1 on the road by a score of 35-14. In the second round, they came back from a 20-7 deficit late in the 3rd quarter to take down state ranked #1 Colerain by a score of 29-23 in overtime. In the Regional Finals, the Bombers also came back from a late 14 point deficit to defeat Sycamore in 2 overtimes by a score of 35-28. In the State Semi-Finals, St. Xavier kicked a late field goal to win the game 29-27 over Pickerington Central HS. They capped the improbable run with another come from behind double overtime win over Cleveland St. Ignatius in the Division I State title game by a score of 27-20 to capture the program’s 3rd State Championship. It was the first time in Ohio history that a 5-5 team won the State Championship in any division. Senior Brady Stoll took home 1st Team All-State honors while senior Carl Grimm garnered All-State Honorable Mention recognition.

The Bombers enjoyed a 17-10 overall record and finished 2nd in the GCL with an 11-7 record. St. Xavier ended the regular season with a victory over #3 ranked Fairfield and headed into postseason play with a head of steam. At the OHSAA Div. I Sectional Championship, the Bombers rolled to an 8th place finish to qualify for the OHSAA Div. I District Tournament. St. Xavier was led by juniors Garrett Litzinger and Jared Tuerck who were both named All GCL 1st Team.

GOLF The 2016 St. Xavier Golf Team became the first golf team in school history to repeat as State Champions after winning in 2015 as well. They completed one of the best seasons in school history as they won numerous events and were undefeated in dual matches. The Bombers won the GCL South Championship and the OHSAA Div. I Sectional Championship. They won the State Championship after the first day of the tournament was rained out. St. Xavier shot a team total of 303 at Ohio State’s Scarlet Course in Columbus, OH to capture the title.

The Bombers were led by junior Cameron Frazier who shot a 1 under 71 to become the school’s first time individual State Champion.

Frazier also broke the all-time season scoring record during the season. It was the program’s 5th State Title.

BASKETBALL St. Xavier’s basketball program took positive steps as they improved on their record and finished 9-15 overall. The Bombers got national exposure with a trip to Windermere Prep Academy over Christmas Break. The Bombers won their 1st round OHSAA Div. I Tournament Game, the first tournament win in 3 years, by beating Lakota West 51-40. Senior Daniel Keyes led the Bombers and received 1st Team All GCL Honors.

RUGBY

The St. Xavier Ice Hockey team finished 17-5-2 in the regular season and won the SWOHSHL regular season title with an 10-1-1 league record.

The Bombers won the school’s first SWOHSHL tournament championship by defeating Elder HS in the championship game by a score of 5-2.

St. Xavier was led by senior Roppe Ketola who was nominated to the Ohio Senior All Star team.

The Varsity Rugby team continues to improve and continues to attract a lot of student interest. The Bombers traveled to Elkhart, IN for the Midwest tournament and played nationally ranked teams.

The Bombers defeated Walnut Hills, Lakota Jets, Hilliard, Carroll, Louisville Trinity, and Withrow during the season.

TENNIS WRESTLING The Bombers continue to improve as they took their annual trip to the Wheeling Park Duals in Wheeling, WV and finished 5-3 in their 8 dual matches. St. Xavier was selected to host Regional OHSAA Team Tournament Matches. The Bombers were led by senior Connor Yauss who finished the year 41-11 overall after qualifying for the OHSAA Div. I State Championships in the 152 lbs. weight class.

BASEBALL St. Xavier’s Baseball program enjoyed the most successful season since the 2003 season which ended with the program’s only State Title. The Bombers finished the regular season with an 18-4 overall record and won the GCL South Championship outright with a 7-2 league record.

The league title was the first since 2011 and the first outright title since 1999. St. Xavier advanced to the OHSAA Div. I Regional Finals for the first time since 2003 after victories over Turpin, Mason, Lebanon and Lakota West. The Bombers were led by junior Nathan Kappers who won GCL Pitcher of the Year and seniors Michael Cleary, Peter Fisher, Trevor Kuncl, and Alex Markley who were all recognized with All GCL 1st Team honors.

LACROSSE The Varsity Lacrosse Bombers had a special regular season as they finished 14-4 overall and finished the season as the #1 ranked team in the Midwest according to Laxpower.com. The Bombers advanced to the OHSAA Div. I Regional Finals during the first ever OHSAA Boys Lacrosse tournament. St. Xavier was led by seniors Caleb Anderson and Brady Stoll who received US Lacrosse All American honors and 1st Team All-State honors. Juniors Duke Alf and Donny Stock also received 1st Team All-State honors.

The Bombers’ tennis program continued their GCL South dominance as they won the program’s 50th straight GCL Title by finishing with a 6-0 league record. St. Xavier finished the season with a 21-3 overall record and ranked #5 in the final OTCA Coaches Poll. The Bombers doubles team of senior Peter Schulteis and sophomore Max DeCurtins won the OHSAA Div. I Sectional Doubles Championship and finished 2nd at the OHSAA Div. I District Doubles Championship to advance to the OHSAA Div. I State Doubles Tournament. Freshman Ronit Hiryur advanced to the OHSAA Div. I State Singles Tournament after finishing 2nd at Sectionals and 3rd at Districts

TRACK AND FIELD The St. Xavier Track and Field program made great strides this year as they were very competitive at multiple meets. They won the Elder Skyline Open and finished 2nd at the Coaches Classic and Colerain Invitational events. At the GCL Meet, St. Xavier recorded their best finish since 2014 as they finished 2nd. The Bombers finished 3rd at the OHSAA Div. I District Meet at Mason HS. St. Xavier qualified two throwers, junior Sean Mesue and senior Jonah Yates, for the OHSAA Div. I State Meet after they finished 1st and 3rd, respectively, at the Regional Meet at Welcome Stadium.

VOLLEYBALL The Bombers’ Volleyball team finished the regular season with a 19-4 record with wins over Hilliard Darby, St. Ignatius, Moeller, Archbishop Hoban and Centerville who all finished the season in the top 10 of the State Rankings. St. Xavier advanced to the OHSBVA Div. I State Tournament at Capital University where they defeated Centerville in the Quarterfinals to advance to the State Semi Finals. St. Xavier was led by junior Henry Huber who received 2nd Team All-State honors and junior Ben Pung who received All-State Honorable Mention honors.

WATER POLO The Bombers repeated as State Champions in 2016. They finished the regular season with a 70-44-14 overall program record and finished 19th in a national tournament in California during the year. St. Xavier dedicated their play in the State Championship tournament to a fallen US Navy Seal, Charles Keating, IV, whose family has done a lot for St. Xavier HS. The Bombers rolled through the State Tournament as they outscored their opponents 60-29 in the four games which was capped by a 13-11 win over St. Charles in the State Title Game. It was the 3rd State Title in the history of the program as St. Xavier was led by senior Patrick Hudak who was named Ohio Player of the Year.

SWIMMING AND DIVING The AquaBombers team scored a state record 434 points at the 2017 OHSAA Div. I State Championship Meet in Canton, OH at the end of February. The AquaBombers took 1st place in 8 of the 12 events and set 5 OHSAA Div. I State Records in those wins.

Senior Grant House was named Performer of the Meet as he won 4 events, setting State Records in all of them. He became the most decorated swimmer in Ohio history with 13 State Championships during his 4 year career.

Head coach Tim Beerman was named Ohio Coach of the Year as he led the program to its 38th State Title and 9th straight.

President’s Dinner

A Culture of Champions St. Xavier High School benefactors and supporters gathered for the annual President’s Dinner on May 2. Fr. Tim Howe SJ thanked guests and led the evening of honors and awards.

As guests arrived they were greeted by the melodic tones of the St. Xavier Jazz Band.

Mr. Adam Bohan SJ began the dinner with a prayer and guests enjoyed dinner music provided by the Strings Ensemble.

The choral group Ensemble X performed the National Anthem and then delighted guests with the musical performance of the song “Joshua.”

Faculty and staff members Mr. Michael P. Meyer and Mrs. Janet M. Reder were recognized for their 25 years of dedicated service to the St. Xavier community.

St. Xavier High School board members Mr. Michael N. Schuster, Mr. Michael G. Stenger ’79 and Rev. William L. Verbryke SJ ’71 were honored and thanked for their service.

The evening ended with two very special award presentations.

Mr. John V. Ravenna ’87 was honored as the 2017 Magis Award winner and Mr. Joseph H. Dillhoff, Jr. ’50 received the 2017 Insignis Award.

The theme of the evening was celebrating the culture of champions at St. Xavier High School. Guests were inspired by a video narrated by faculty member Paul Reiselman that featured seniors who excelled in multiple areas, including academics, arts, athletics and community service, during their time at St. X thus creating a culture of champions.

St. X Board Chair Mrs. Ann Berger addressed guests giving them a brief report on the presidential search and thanked all those in attendance for their dedication to the students of St. Xavier High School.

Graduation On May 24, the Class of 2017 was welcomed into the Long Blue Line of St. Xavier alumni. The 374 young men ceremoniously followed the members of the Class of 1967 into the Cintas Center for the graduation ceremony upholding the tradition of the 50 year anniversary class leading the procession.

Principal Terry Tyrrell welcomed the graduates, alumni, parents and family members supporting the members of the class on this special occasion. He encouraged the graduates to continue to live the Jesuit motto of Ad Maijorem Dei Gloriam, All for the Greater Glory of God. Samuel H. Klare ’17 spoke on behalf of the senior class congratulating his fellow classmates for their many accomplishments as Men for Others. John F. Barrett ’67 encouraged the class to use their gifts and what they learned at St. Xavier to change the world.

Faculty Focus Dan Lynch You were part of the St. Xavier family years ago, left and now you are back. What brought you back to St. Xavier?

During my first stint at St X, I married a bright and talented business woman (nee, Anne Kronenberger) who worked at GE in Evendale. It was her career path that led us from Cincinnati and on a tour of the world for the next 20 years. During that time she found new job opportunities with various GE businesses and we landed in a host of cities (Columbus, Milwaukee, Sydney AU, Philadelphia, Fairfield CT and London UK). Along the way, I was fortunate enough to find work at a number of Jesuit schools including: Marquette High School, St. Aloysius College, St. Joe’s Prep and Regis High School (NYC).

What is the most rewarding thing about being part of the St. Xavier community?

Dan Lynch began with student teaching at St. X in the fall of 1990. It was the following school year when he says he was lucky enough that they expanded the Math department and was hired on full time. At that time he coached freshman football and then freshman soccer, worked with Jim Brower and Dan Klare with the newly developed intramural golf program, served on the Kairos Board, served as Treasurer of the St. Xavier Faculty Association (SXFA), lead two mission trips, and worked on a committee tasked with reimagining the structure of our school (the precursor to the current house system). Additionally, he became involved in the Jesuit Schools Network (JSEA at the time) through summer workshops. Since his return to St. X in the fall of 2014, he is once again teaching math, coaching soccer (JV), participating in the Kairos retreat program, serving as an officer of SXFA and, beginning this fall, serving as the Chair of the Math department.

I have the greatest job in the world. Each day I have the opportunity to live out my faith by working with a tremendously talented faculty, staff and administration all in the effort of enriching the lives of our students. Helping them on the path of discovering and developing their own unique gifts and talents. One thing I have found consistent amongst Jesuit schools is the mission driven nature of each community. With fewer Jesuits in the schools, it is the shared foundational documents (like the Graduate at Graduation) which keeps the common focus regardless of the location in the country or in the world. Each school certainly animates the mission in its own way, but the schools share far more in common than what differentiates them. St. Xavier can be very proud of the role they have played in this effort. Former principal Mike Trainor was part of the original members of the JSEA sub-committee which drafted the original “grad at grad” document which is now used by all member schools. Furthermore, St. X has taken these documents and brought them to life in all aspects of our community. For example,

the Freshman Family Conferences, Junior Family Conferences and Senior Exit Interviews are all directly tied to the “grad at grad”. One component of Ignatian Spirituality is “finding God in all things.” One of the things I have most appreciated about my return to St. X is the intentional efforts to incorporate prayer into all that we do. The sports chaplaincy program is one such example. Mr. Paul Rieselman is the chaplain for the soccer program.

Each week of the season the soccer teams gather together to reflect on how God is working with them on the pitch and in our community. For many in the soccer program, “Chapel Visits” are one of the favorite memories from each season.

Relationships that begin at St. X continue long after the date of graduation.

Describe the St. Xavier student.

St. X students are great. Generally, they are engaged in class, open to learning and hardworking students. The rapport between student and teacher is something that sets St. X apart from most other schools in the area. There is mutual respect and admiration with each other, both in and out of the classroom. For example, after almost every class, students will thank their teachers for instructing them that day. It’s a small gesture, but one that almost every new teacher at St. X is pleasantly surprised by.

What is the St. Xavier Advantage?

In the short term, students and adults alike are cared for as individuals, pushed to develop themselves in all aspects of their lives and supported in that pursuit. In the long term, members of the Long Blue Line form a community throughout the city and beyond. Relationships that begin at St. X continue long after the date of graduation.

Being Friends, Becoming Family Since the announcement that Fr. Tim Howe will be leaving us next year in June 2018, there have already been many questions about how we will honor what Fr. Howe has meant to St. Xavier High School. Of course Fr. Howe has been many things to many people during his years at St. X. Teacher, Priest, Friend, Leader. But to the Gardner, Mueller and Johns families, he is more than those roles –he is family- and they have taken the first step towards cementing Fr. Howe’s legacy at St. X. Fr. Howe first met Adam Mueller ’96 when Adam was a student at St. X who participated on the Mock Trial Team. Fr. Howe came to St. X in 1991 to teach Spanish and was also the Mock Trial Moderator.

When asked about that time at St. X, Fr. Howe described Adam and the Mock Trial team as a special group that bonded during their time together, which included going to the State finals. During the season at various Mock Trial events, Fr. Howe formed a friendship with Adam’s parents, Tom and Linda Mueller and met their other children – Adam’s younger brothers and future Bombers, Eric Mueller ‘99 and Jonathan Mueller ‘03.

Having left St. X after reassignment, Fr. Howe returned as President in 2008. He reconnected with the Muellers and met new family members, Kyle Johns ’08, cousin to Adam Mueller, and his parents, Gary and Peggy Johns. Peggy and Gary were very active volunteering at X-Travaganza events, allowing Fr. Howe to get to know them and learn of their family connection to the Muellers. Linda Mueller and Peggy Johns are sisters and the daughters of Jim and Joan Gardner.

They understand my passion for helping young men of any background or socioeconomic status receive a St. Xavier education.

Very active as grandparents in the St. X community, Jim and Joan Gardner often attended St. X alumni events in Ocean Reef, Florida. Fr. Howe was able to finally meet Jim and Joan in Ocean Reef and found the Gardners to be kind and generous. He enjoyed trading stories with them about their grandchildren he knew as students and discussing his teaching experiences in the US and abroad, given the Gardners’ own passion for the subject of education.

He would often see them in Cincinnati afterwards at St. Rose’s Church, where he celebrated Mass, and they would catch up, chatting about the latest family news.

But Fr. Howe became an official Gardner Family member when Joan Gardner invited Fr. Howe to celebrate Mass for Jim’s 80th birthday party in 2013.

Fr. Howe was able to reconnect with Adam, Eric and Jonathan, who he remembered as children, and Kyle along with their parents and extended family.

After years of friendship, the Gardner Family received the news in April of Fr. Howe’s new assignment with mixed emotions. They were happy for him to be taking on a new challenge, but disappointed because he will be greatly missed.

The family knew they had to help preserve Fr. Howe’s vision and legacy at the school and they knew how they were going to do it. The James J. and Joan A. Gardner Family Foundation made the decision to match the first $500,000 donated for tuition assistance endowment at St. Xavier in Fr. Howe’s name.

Adam explained “We have been looking for opportunities to help support the St. Xavier community and creating the Fr. Timothy Howe SJ Scholarship Fund fits our family mission by supporting education and provides an opportunity to honor Fr. Howe in appreciation for everything he has done for St. X and for our family.”

Adam and Eric Mueller and Kyle Johns invited Fr. Howe to lunch in May and delivered the news of the Fr. Timothy Howe SJ Scholarship Fund in person. Fr. Howe was profoundly moved when he heard the news.

He explained afterwards, “You know the feeling you get when someone gives you a gift and it is exactly what you wanted? You realize that they really ‘get’ you? That’s the feeling I had when I heard that The James J. and Joan A. Gardner Family Foundation was doing this with my name attached.

They understand my passion for helping young men of any background or socioeconomic status receive a St. Xavier education. This family and this foundation truly embody our Men and Women for Others ideal. I’m so grateful for their support over the years.”

The Fr. Timothy Howe SJ Scholarship Fund will enable future generations of academically qualified young men, who qualify for need-based financial aid, to grow and excel academically and spiritually.

Thanks to the leadership and pastoral strength of Fr. Howe, St. Xavier High School continues to be the destination school for families who want their sons to get a nationally renowned education and become critical thinkers who can become future leaders.

Student Spotlight Delan Stallworth ’17 During his high school career, Delan Stallworth ’17 took advantage of all that St. Xavier has to offer.

Delan played football and ran track. He was also part of the Hands Across Campus group, a member of the Leadership Team and an Ambassador of Excellence, helping with future Bombers. Delan will be attending Princeton University. He will be playing football, plans to study Mechanical Engineering and one day hopes to work in the automotive industry.

Why did you decide to attend St. Xavier High School?

My parents decided for me, but I’m glad they did.

This was probably the best decision that could have been made and set me up in the best possible way for the future.

Talk about your experiences in the classroom and on the playing field.

My experiences in the classroom and the playing field have both been very challenging during my four years at St. Xavier. Although it has been hard, these experiences have pushed me to grow as a leader and taught me to persevere in the hardest of times. Through both, the fond memories made with friends and teammates, and the trials and tribulations, I have grown into a better Man for Others.

This was probably the best decision that could have been made and set me up in the best possible way for the future.

What words of wisdom do you have for future members of the Long Blue Line?

My best advice is to get involved early. The friendships gained and lessons that can be learned will last a lifetime. Early involvement will help new students to acclimate through the transition from grade school to high school. Also, make the most of every moment. Looking back at my four years, it flew by faster than I would have ever expected. Just appreciate the opportunities given, even the little things, and work to make an impact whenever possible.

The St. Xavier Advantage to me means the opportunity to flourish and become a leader. It is different for everyone, but St. X has changed me from a quiet, shy kid, to a young man who is willing to lead others. None of that would have been possible without the connections I have made through X, pushing me towards continuous growth.

Have you ever received an email from somebody that has a quote after their signature and business information? I am one of those guys that does that. I started doing it because I saw it on someone’s emails years ago and thought it was a neat idea. Here is the quote that I have been using at the bottom of my emails recently:

“You can’t live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you.” – John Wooden John Wooden was a legendary basketball coach known as the “Wizard of Westwood.” He won 10 national championships while coaching at UCLA. He has been attributed with a lot of great quotes. He was a master at motivation and he coached basketball like a teacher.

I really like that quote because I think it gets to the heart of one of the tenets of a Jesuit education. It is being a man or woman for others. As our Ignatian prayer for generosity says, “to labor and not seek any reward, except that of knowing that I am doing your will.”

There are a lot of people that I see or hear about on a daily basis that help people and do it knowing that that can never be repaid for their acts of kindness. Just look at John Ravenna, our Magis award recipient this year. Through his work with community service, our retention and enrichment program and his work as our Director of Multicultural Initiatives I can guarantee John has touched more lives of young men here at St. X than he will ever know.

I truly hope that those of you who support St. Xavier High School financially each year realize that perfect day that John Wooden was talking about. You are doing something for someone, namely our

students, for which you can never truly be repaid. You are fantastic examples for our students of what it means to be men and women for others. It is because of your support that we can continue to provide a Jesuit, Catholic education to young men each year who turn around and make a difference in our communities and world.

And thankfully, these young men learn from you and give back to St. X to keep the mission here thriving.

I ask that all of you really think about the words of John Wooden and live that perfect day by reaching out in some way to help someone who will never be able to repay you. I can almost guarantee that person will pay it forward as you have done. Thank you, St. Xavier community, for being so generous and willing to make that perfect day happen so often here on North Bend Road.

’76 Ohio Supreme Court Justice Patrick F. Fischer took his ceremonial oath

As the Supreme Court’s 157th justice, Fischer won election in November to an open seat and began his six-year term on Jan. 1. His judicial experience includes six years on the First District Court of Appeals. Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor administered the oath.

’78 Michael Mack was named the 12th editor of Christian Standard magazine. Mack comes to the position with 28 years of experience in publishing, local church ministry, and national small groups leadership. He is a graduate of the University of Cincinnati and received the Master of Arts in practical ministries from Cincinnati Christian University. Mack has written as a columnist for the magazine for six years. He has also written eight books, more than 25 discussion guides, and hundreds of magazine and newspaper articles. He has served as a freelance editor and ghostwriter in several fields. Mack lives in Pewee Valley. Kentucky with his wife, Heidi. They have four adult children.

Mr. Peterson will report to Mr. Fabian Garcia, President & CEO of Revlon. Prior to joining Revlon, Mr. Peterson served in a number of senior executive positions at Ralph Lauren Corporation, including most recently as its President, Global Brands, a position he held since 2015. In this role, Mr. Peterson was responsible for overseeing Ralph Lauren’s Global Brand Presidents, as well as its Chief Financial Officer, Investor Relations, Information Technology & Real Estate.

’85 Jim Kraimer earned his Executive MBA from the Technical University of Munich in November 2016. The program was taught in both English and German. Thanks to former St. X German teacher Ed Hausfeld — as well as many years of living in Munich — the two languages really enhanced his experience. The program also included modules at Tsinghua University in Beijing and St. Gallen, Switzerland. He is currently the Director of Industrial Design for Crown Equipment Corporation and has lived with his family in Munich for the past ten years. ’87 Mike Michel will be releasing a new recording “ On The Mend” in conjunction with Think Piece Publishing. “On The Mend” is dedicated to raising awareness for tinnitus, hyperacusis and mental health. Mike will be touring the Midwest, performing his new music but will also be heavily involved with speaking engagements regarding invisible conditions that deal with the brain. Mike was forced to take 3 years off from playing music but now has rebooted his career and his new partnership with Think Piece. Think Piece is a Minnesota-based publisher that puts out books and music that focus on resiliency and wellness. ’88 Chris Mack, along with making it to

Coach Mack’s Corner is designed to encourage elementary-aged kids to read, has bean bag chairs for comfortable reading and wall-sized decorations featuring Xavier University’s basketball court and Coach Mack.

’89 Mike Rossman, his wife, Michele, and their three children, Will (15), Joey (14) and Lucy (10) moved to Glenview, Illinois. Will attends Loyola Academy where his brother, Joey will join him next year. The family belongs to Our Lady of Perpetual Help and the other children will attend grade school there. The award is given to recognize and reward teachers at Fenwick High School who stress and strengthen the self-esteem of students who are struggling academically and emotionally. The award is created to stress and highlight the importance and sensitivity of faculty members working with all types of students. Today’s teachers have to be sensitized for a new society, family, structure, and student learning styles. Poplis is an Intervention Specialist at Fenwick.

’13 Rahul Rege was one of the three students who was presented with the Edward G. McDonnell Award at 2013 Academic Awards Night. He will be graduating from the University of Pittsburgh’s Swanson School of Engineering with a major in Bioengineering with minors in Neuroscience and Chemistry after receiving a full tuition scholarship.

After his sophomore year, he participated in a two-summer summer internship called the ROSE program at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. This internship was also early acceptance into the medical college. He has also been accepted to the Ohio State University College of Medicine and will be starting medical school in the Fall at one of these colleges.

’13 Zak Morse and Jackson Bowers ’13 are taking on a service opportunity this summer through a program called Bike & Build. They’re raising money and riding bikes from Virginia Beach, VA to Cannon Beach, OR over the course of three months. The program works with affordable housing organizations along the way, and once or twice a week we trade our helmets for hammers and actually build housing along the way.

’13 Andrew Weller has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Nepal.

In addition to teaching English to his students, Weller hopes to volunteer in a clinic or visit hospitals to learn how medicine is practiced in Nepal. Weller, a chemistry major in the Health Professions Advising Program and a member of the College Honors Program, plans to attend medical school after completing his Fulbright. He hopes to incorporate international medicine into his professional career, an interest that developed during a Holy Cross immersion trip to Haiti where he had the opportunity to interact with Haitian and U.S. healthcare providers. On campus, Weller was a mentor in the First-Year Research Advancement Program; co-chair of the Spring Break Immersion Program; and a Student Programs For Urban Development program director for Plumley Village, an elementary after-school tutoring site, and Let’s Get Ready, a nonprofit organization that provides SAT preparation to low-income high school students.

Argentina was the departure country and for 6 days Jim spent large parts of each day exploring ashore via inflatable boats seeing whales, sea lions and hordes of penguins.

As it was summer days often reached 20 degrees Fahrenheit, but most nights were below zero.

Aaron, swimming for Missouri S&T, qualified in the 200 Butterfly and the 1650 Freestyle. Dad and Grandpa were proud spectators, cheering on Aaron and MS&T. 2. Fishing Club The St. Xavier fishing club started six years ago and has grown into a popular activity. Ted Mechley, Steve Bleh, and Jason Ahlers work with the young men planning fishing excursions across the area, and accompany the young men on the water. This year the fishing club visited the Great Miami River, the Little Miami River, Campbell Lakes and some smaller private waters. The mission of the club is to get young men outdoors, and to introduce them to different methods and styles of fishing.

The club would benefit from any ponds, lakes, or stream access that you may have. Although we fish the public areas, some of these anglers are new to the sport and would benefit from water that sees less action. The group is always accompanied by adults,
