Love one another with brotherly affection Dear friends, The longer I serve as president of St. Xavier High School, the deeper relationships grow. Whether on a Kairos retreat or at a class reunion, time and time again I see Bombers love one another with brotherly affection. (Romans 12:10) I am inspired as I travel around the country getting to know more of our alumni. Groups of men—often spanning decades— come together to share their love for St. Xavier High School. The relationships within the Long Blue Line are deep and lasting, and men are proud to call themselves Bombers.

In this issue you will read about an amazing achievement of the Class of 1961. Drawing on their relationships of fifty years, in a remarkably short period of time they were able to establish the first-ever fully-funded scholarship from an individual class.

Their close-knit bond as classmates inspired them to work together and do something significant for future Bombers. Furthermore, our Young Alumni Saturday Morning Service program has young graduates serving the community as Men for Others while mentoring our current students. Also, The Healy Society builds connections among our students, graduates and the overall St. Xavier Community.

I thank you for your relationship with St. Xavier High School and your faithful dedication to the Long Blue Line. It is this personal commitment from our alumni, parents and friends that guarantees the success of present and future Bombers!

St. X Students Bring Christmas to Boys & Girls Club Christmas came early for many young men involved in the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Cincinnati.

St. Xavier students volunteer for many different organizations in the Cincinnati area through the community service department. Many are involved in the Big Buddies program.

The Big Buddies program pairs St. X students with one child at different branches of the Cincinnati Boys & Girls Club. Bombers spend time with their little buddies by helping them with their homework, tutoring and playing.

I thought that it was a very easy way to do something nice for the kids who mean so much to our sons and who

may not be as blessed as us during Christmas.”

The group got together and stuffed stockings full of gifts and brought Christmas early to their little buddies.

A true example of Men for Others!

Canned Food Drive This year’s Canned Food Drive collected more than 143,000 pounds of food for those in need. Despite this year’s extreme winter weather, 538 families were adopted.

Christmas Music to Our Ears The St. Xavier High School choirs, string ensembles, and bands presented the annual St. X Christmas Concerts. The concerts took place December 18 and 19 in the Walter C. Deye S.J. Performance Center.

Mom Prom More than 250 seniors and their moms enjoyed Mom Prom 2014 this winter at Music Hall. The Mom Prom is a St. X tradition mothers and their sons look forward to each and every year. Thanks to all the moms of this year’s senior class for everything you do for your Bomber!

Phonathon More than 150 St. Xavier students volunteered their time to call alumni from all over the country on behalf of this year’s 2013 Fall Phonathon.

Our students called for six nights and secured 1,452 pledges for $141,798.64!

Thank you to our students and our fantastic alumni for their continuous generosity and support of the mission here at St. Xavier High School. St. Xavier also thanks Cincinnati Bell for their generous ongoing support of our annual phonathon efforts.

Theatre Xavier’s Sherlock Holmes And The Case Of The Jersey Lily Theatre Xavier once again wowed audiences with excitement on the stage. More than 100 students worked tirelessly to put on Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Jersey Lily for Theatre Xavier’s annual fall performance.

Hundreds enjoyed this “steampunk” twist to the ever popular TX performances.

Honda Math Winner Congratulations to senior Dane Morey (’14). Dane was awarded the Honda Math Medal for 2014. The award is a collaborative effort between the Honda Corporation and Ohio State. Each school in the state gives the award to a junior who is deemed to be a top mathematics student who is interested in engineering as a field of study. That student is then nominated for an engineering scholarship at Ohio State.

Dane received the award from St. X last spring and attended a dinner in October where he received the award.

2013 Named Endowments Reception

Shantytown Shantytown is an attempt to imitate the simple lifestyle of the homeless for two days in order to experience the challenges that form a part of their daily lives. Shantytown demands a willingness to be open to whatever the experience of the two days brings to mind or heart. It is a call to build community both with the homeless and with each other.

This year at the ninth St. X Shantytown Retreat more than 70 students were challenged to imitate the many ways a day in the life of the homeless.

Sleeping outdoors in a box shelter that each one constructs, living and eating with few resources are part of the experience. But so are conversations with a formerly homeless person and with an outreach worker. Role-plays challenged the participants to openness, and prayer services helped frame the experience as a spiritual challenge as well.

“I truly enjoyed my Shantytown experience,” said Rusty Kautzman (’17). “I learned so much about what the homeless truly go through and it pushed me to look at my life in a different way and appreciate that I am lucky to have so much.”

St. Xavier High School benefactors gathered for an evening of appreciation at the 2013 Named Endowments Reception at the Walter C. Deye, S.J. Performance Center on Wednesday, October 16.

The evening began with a reception where current students and benefactors had the opportunity to get to know one another. After the reception, the group gathered for a short program emceed by Fr. Tim Howe SJ. Something Blue choral ensemble performed the National Anthem and the Chamber Blues string ensemble entertained guests with two pieces. Ms. Tami Prophater provided insight into a faculty experience thanks to the endowment program. Student Joseph R. Heyob (’14) spoke on student impact and Mr. Dennis M. Doyle provided special words about the benefactor’s perspective. The evening was enjoyed by all.

The St. Xavier Advantage Academic Pride—It’s Cool to Be Smart The average ACT score of the top 10% of the Class of 2013 was 34.5. The median ACT score for the Class of 2013 was 31.5. The national average ACT score is 21.

St. X Cross Country Brings Home State Title/6th in the Nation The St. Xavier Bombers raced to become the Ohio Cross Country State Champs for the second year in a row! The team set a state record with 46 points, the lowest score ever for a team racing 5000 meters. Senior Michael Hall finished 4th with a time of 15:28, Evan Stifel (’14) - 5th with 15:29, Michael Vitucci (’15) -8th with 15:42, Cole Grabowski (’15) - 29th with 16:09, Brad Eagan (’15) - 34th with 16:11, Jack Krug

(’14) - 82nd with 16:41, and Jax Talbot (’14) 92nd with 16:48. Additionally, the team finished 6th at the Nike Cross Country National meet in Portland, OR. The team achieved two Ohio firsts: the first team to automatically qualify to nationals and the first Ohio team to qualify in multiple years, with a 9th place finish last year in addition to this year’s top-ten finish.

St. Xavier High School and the Cross Country Team would like to thank Coach Mike Dehring for his service to Cross Country. Coach Dehring has decided to step down as the varsity head coach after 21 years of service to the program. Dehring served as the Assistant Cross Country coach under Larry Merkel from 19932004 and served as the head coach from 2005-2013. He was part of three state championship teams under Merkel and has now won two state championships (’12 +’13) with a second place finish in 2009 and taken the team to national competition twice. Congratulations to the Bomber Cross Country team for their continued success!

Blood Drive Saves Lives Bombers once again took the time out their daily lives to save the lives of others during the annual St. X Blood Drive with Hoxworth Blood Center. The proof is in the dozens of vials and bags collected.

Hoxworth Blood Center came to campus working with student council. Students, faculty and staff participated in the drive collecting 51 units of blood. Each unit of blood will save at least three lives.

Student Council President Armando Simpson (’14) and fellow council members worked the drive to welcome and provide snacks to donors so they were able to regain some strength before heading back to class.

Student Council says thank you to all who participated. Another blood drive is planned for the spring.

Habitat for Humanity Award

Jazz at its best will be performed on Friday, May 1 at the 15th Annual Michael Benson Concert, held in the Black Box Theater and the Walter C. Deye, S.J. Performance Center at St. Xavier High School. Special guest performer is world-renowned bassist Paul Keller, with featured artist the Phil DeGreg Trio. In this two-part concert, the Jazz Showcase begins at 6:30 p.m. with St. X grad, Phil DeGreg (‘72) and his trio performing with Paul Keller in the Black Box Theater. The cabaret style setting offers coffee and desserts available for a donation. At 7:30 p.m. the Jazz Concert will take place in the adjacent main theater with performances by the St. Xavier Out of the Blue Jazz Band joined by Paul Keller.

Tickets - $15 for adults, $5 for students/children 18 and under may be purchased at the door the night of the benefit. Proceeds fund scholarships for two Jazz Ensemble musicians to attend the Jamey Aebersold Jazz Clinic in the summer.

On Wednesday evening, October 30, St. Xavier students accepted a major award from Habitat for Humanity. St. Xavier High School was awarded the “Window to the Future” award, which is given each year to a group of young people recognizing their hard work and dedication exhibited by their countless hours of service to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Cincinnati.

The Saturday Morning Service group, administered by Linda Gloeckler, volunteers at Habitat sites once a month throughout the school year. Through our football community service program, Habitat was one of the agencies with which a majority of the 120 varsity players had the opportunity to volunteer.

These students have made a positive impact on Habitat for Humanity of Greater Cincinnati, and they truly exemplify what it means to be a Man for Others.

Mothers’ Club Luncheon and Boutique Great Success The Mothers’ Club hosted its annual Luncheon Boutique and Fashion Show on Friday, December 6 at St. Xavier High School. Guests enjoyed special musical performances from students while shopping at the boutique filled with gorgeous hand-made items from the Mothers’ Club. Shopping was followed by the luncheon and fashion show.

Karl Thomsen emceed the luncheon event which opened with the St. X Drumline and a vocal performance from Something Blue. The Mothers’ Club presented Fr. Tim Howe and principal Terry Tyrrell checks for more than $27,000.

St. Xavier Mothers’ Club members and supporters modeled fashions and accessories for the crowd followed by a special fashion show from St. X Seniors.

Guests were also surprised by the appearance of the principal Terry Tyrrell and Fr. Howe. The event concluded with a special dance by the St. X seniors.

A big thank you goes out to all who made this event such a huge success!

modern art— an unXpected Xperience X-travaganza is an exciting and fun-filled annual dinner auction attended by parents, alumni and other friends of St. Xavier high School to raise funds to support many educational programs and co-curriculars which benefits the entire student body.

Since 1976, this event has been the premiere fundraiser for St. Xavier high School. this year’s event, entitled X-Travaganza 2014: modern art—an unXpected Xperience will be held Saturday, March 8. 2014.

X-travaganza 2014 chairs heidi Mechley-Felton and Mike Felton are the first second generation chairs. heidi’s parents, eileen and Braden Mechley chaired X-travaganza in 1987. creativity will surround guests as they kick-off the weekend, on Friday, March 7 with Art Xpressions chaired by Jill and John o’Shea and Michelle and Rob Morgan.

Both nights offer guests the opportunity to be surrounded by X-ceptional decorations inspired by this year’s theme of modern art. St. Xavier student art was used in all print pieces like the grand Raffle tickets, reply card, invitation pieces and will be used for the decorations as well. on Saturday night, guests may participate in a variety of raffles while sampling hors d’oeuvres before enjoying an elegant sit-down gourmet dinner. A complimentary bar is open all evening, with a Silent Auction – offering hundreds of tempting items in a wide range of categories and values. What makes a Jesuit school Jesuit?

What makes a Jesuit school Jesuit? With over 60 Jesuit high schools in the United States serving a diverse population of students and communities, this is an important question to ask in order to ensure the safeguarding of the mission of Jesuit schools. As a graduate of, and having worked in Jesuit education my entire professional life, I understand that there are fundamental attributes that make a school Jesuit, including the mission to the Catholic faith, an emphasis on service to others, and educational excellence. In the ever-changing world of education, this is an important question we need to continue asking ourselves.

What makes St. Xavier High School Jesuit? Beginning this spring, St. Xavier will be embarking on a self-study to identify the characteristics that makes the school Jesuit. Utilizing the Jesuit Conference’s document, “What Makes a Jesuit School Jesuit? The Relationship Between Jesuit Schools and the Society of Jesus,” the community will be invited to reflect on ten specific dimensions that the Jesuit Conference has identified as critical to Jesuit schools, including the spiritual dimension of Jesuit education, teaching and acting justly, and the global dimension of the educational mission. This will provide an opportunity for the school community to identify the strengths and weaknesses of St. Xavier in regard to these dimensions and, along with our strategic plan and the recommendations from a visiting team of Jesuit educators, endorse a plan for growth.

In late January, I traveled to Pine Ridge, South Dakota to spend two days at the Red Cloud Indian School, which is a Jesuit school located in the Midwest province, the same province that governs St. Xavier. I was part of team that was given the task of identifying the characteristics that made Red Cloud a Jesuit school. What I found was a school that, on the surface, was as different from St. Xavier as one could possibly imagine, with a population of 200 high school students who were Native American and from the Lakota reservation in southwest South Dakota. Most of the students came from low income families and had never left the reservation on which they were born. Receiving no money from tuition or traditional fundraising, the school had to raise 12 million annually just to operate. It is a true mission school.

However, when I began to meet the faculty, staff, students and parents and started to understand the heart of the institution, the similarities to St. Xavier were striking. What I found was a school culture that was loving, built on a foundation of supporting and serving one another, and where God was at the center of all things. Attached to this article are two pictures identifying Lakota phrases and their English translation that were prominently displayed in the school: “Wachantognaka” or “In Service of Others” and “Woyunonihan” or “Finding God In All Things.” When you walk around St. Xavier, you will find the same messages.

My hope next year is that the Midwest Province visiting team assigned to visit St. Xavier comes away with the same experience I had at Red Cloud: that St. Xavier High School, at its core, truly represents the Jesuit and Catholic mission that the school was founded on. Based on my experiences over the last six months, I have no doubt that they will.

An experience unlike any other Why did you choose to attend St. Xavier High School?

I wanted to attend St. X ever since I was in the second grade, follow in my dad’s footsteps and become a Bomber. As I grew older my reasons changed a bit, and I chose to come here for St. X’s great academic reputation. I really wanted to challenge myself in high school, and I felt that St. X was the right place for me.

Describe your classroom experience at St. Xavier.

There’s never a day that goes by that I’m not amazed by something that goes on in class. Each debate I’ve heard, presentation I’ve watched, and paper I’ve read has not only amazed me but also has pushed me to do my absolute best in the classroom. I feel that I’m surrounded by some of the most intelligent high school students in the country, day in and day out, and that atmosphere has helped me become a better student.

Tell us about some of your experiences outside the classroom.

I am a wrestler, a member of the Student Leadership Team, a Bomber Pilot, involved with Saturday Morning Service, I have a job at an ice cream shop, and this year I also joined the World Affairs Council. I am most involved with wrestling, but all of these activities have been an important part of my high school career. The Student Leadership

Team has been particularly interesting. It consists of about 15 other seniors and around 20 juniors who were selected to the team, and we help to organize a variety of different events for St. X as well as offer our help to the school in any way we can. The mindset of the team is to be servant leaders, and that’s something I think I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life.

What has been the highlight of your experience with the St. X Wrestling program?

I think honestly the best part of my wrestling experience has been the experience itself. My freshman year I had no prior wrestling experience, and it was very frustrating at first. Wrestling is such a complex sport, with countless moves to perfect, each of which has to be trained to become an instantaneous reflex to whatever situation presents itself. It takes time and energy to really succeed in wrestling, so getting from that little freshman who struggled to do the basics to the wrestler that I am now has been an awesome thing.

Describe your experience having been on Kairos and having just served as Rector.

It’s an experience unlike any other. Going on Kairos presents an atmosphere unlike anything else in this world, and it really opens your eyes. It was without a doubt one of the best experiences of

my life, and I suggest to all future seniors that they attend this retreat.

As you look back, what would you say to a young man wondering if St. X is the right choice for him?

I would tell him that at St. X he’ll find a community unlike any other, that there’s a sense of unity and camaraderie you just can’t find anywhere else, and because of that he’ll always feel like he belongs.

He’ll always have someone to talk to when he needs it, someone to support him when he’s down, and someone to help push him forward when he starts to fall behind. I’d let him know that he’d have 400 brothers by his side to back him up whenever he needed it.

Describe the St. X Advantage and what it means to you.

I think the St. X Advantage is the atmosphere of the school. Being around such skilled students and teachers is such a great opportunity. No matter what class you’re in, what activity you do, at St. X you’ll always find yourself surrounded by people pushing themselves as well as those around them to be the best they can be. I believe that it’s the people here that make St. X so special.

The Class of 1961 uses food, memories, and friendship to pay it forward with a fully-funded scholarship Pay it Forward. Thanks to the generosity of members of the St. Xavier Class of 1961—they can all truly say they have Paid it Forward—to St. Xavier and future members of the Long Blue Line.

Nearly 12 years ago, the development office at St. Xavier High School began working with classes after their 50-year reunion. The conversation was focused on classes as a group giving back to X. Thousands of dollars have been raised thanks to these projects and effort, but in the fall of 2013 the Class of 1961 accomplished something no other class was able to do before them. The Class of 1961, as a whole, raised enough money to endow a fully-funded scholarship worth $250,000 for future Bombers.

So what makes the Class of 1961 so special? The group says it has to be food. They have celebrated a Christmas Luncheon together for over 30 years. At the luncheon, they have enjoyed photos taken by classmate Bob Mackey of every reunion and get together since graduation. This annual get together continued a camaraderie that has grown within the class over the years.

Rick Reynolds (’61) states “We were all kids from all different neighborhoods when we came to St. X. We were different when we first came together and now we are all the same—Bombers and Men for Others.”

The class credits Mike Ehrensberger (’61) for his efforts to push the class to reach the goal.

“At some point, thanks to Mike, we all thought, I have to be a part of this thing” said Lou Esselman (’61).

“Our cohesiveness helped achieve this monumental goal” says Ehrensberger.

“As a group, we are thrilled that this fully-funded scholarship sets us apart” said Bill Wolff (’61). “As the first class to graduate from the current school, we bring together the old and the new, what a better way to complete that circle than with this scholarship.”

The group acknowledges that their St. Xavier experience was not just about the classroom, but relationships as well.

Joe Nesselhuf (’61) states “This scholarship drive made it possible for me to partner with my classmates to make the Bomber experience happen again and again for someone else.”

Barry Aldemeyer (’61) encourages, “I would simply ask other classes to remember the people – faculty, staff, students – who inspired them and helped them grow from timid freshmen to confident seniors, who helped them broaden their horizons in ways they

could not have imagined, who in short gave them a priceless gift.

We, members of the Long Blue Line, cannot really ever pay back for all we received, but we can at least make a down payment.”

The classmates realize the group might be a little different than many classes, but the message was clear. They want their class wide success to encourage all St. Xavier classes to Pay it Forward.

St. Xavier is grateful to the Class of 1961 for their efforts in raising funds to fully endow a scholarship at St. Xavier. This gift will continue forever and ensure students from future generations the St. Xavier experience.

The fabric of St. Xavier High School Men for Others. It sounds like a great tagline. It sounds like great branding. It sounds like a phrase thrown out to get your attention. I guess it can be seen as all three of these, but IT IS a part of the fabric of St. Xavier High School. It is, and always has been, the part of the Jesuit education that just can’t be explained, that has to be experienced. Men for Others is one of those intangibles that is very hard to describe but becomes clear to those who have been a part of the St. X community.

Many of the stories in this edition of St. Xavier Magazine highlight the Men for Others characteristic that becomes a way of life for our graduates. Men for Others is a phrase that was coined in the 70’s, yet graduates from the 60’s, 50’s, 40’s and before instinctively knew they were supposed to step up, make a difference and be an advocate for those in need.

The Class of ’61 felt so strong about their St. X education, and the lifetime values they came away with, that together they fully funded an endowment. This endowment will ensure in perpetuity that academically qualified young men, not financially able, will get the opportunity to experience a St. Xavier education. The Class of ’61 is ensuring future generations of Men for Others.

Fast forward to the Young Alumni Association and their work with the Community Service department and the current students involved in those programs. Not only do these young alumni want to get involved so that they can give back, they also want to be an example for the current student body.

The Class of 2018 will have their Freshman Family Conference at some point in the next couple months.

Even before they begin their high school career, they will be introduced to the Grad

at Grad. They will hear about the characteristics of the Graduate at Graduation: Open to Growth, Intellectually Competent, Religious, Loving and Committed to Justice.

These young men and their parents will come to know that there are expectations for St. Xavier alumni. These expectations come from their fellow alumni, and speak to the need to be an advocate for the marginalized among us. Men for Others is a way of life for the St. Xavier High School community.

I want to thank the Class of ’61, the Young Alumni Association and all of our St. Xavier High School community who continue to live their lives as men (and women) for others. This is one of the intangibles of a St. X education that just can’t be explained-it has to be experienced. Men for Others is not just a brand, motto or tagline, it is a description of the St. Xavier High School alumnus. It is who we are and what we expect of each other. It is what Ignatius Loyola would expect of all of us.

Man for Others Doesn’t End at Graduation Young Alumni Saturday Morning Service Program Gives Back In a Multitude of Ways

It’s the trifecta of service. It’s giving back to the community, mentoring students and together creating a better world. This tremendous impact can be found in the Young Alumni volunteering to chaperone the St. Xavier Saturday Morning Service programs.

The St. Xavier Young Alumni group was formed just a few years ago. Part of the goal of the group (comprised of alumni between the ages of 23 and 33) was to create service projects to continue what they learned as students at St. X. “What we found was that it’s sometimes difficult to find community service geared toward our age group,” said Jeff Scheper (’03).

With this in mind, the service committee of the Young Alumni group partnered with the St. Xavier Community Service Department and the Alumni Office to create an official Saturday Morning Service chaperone program. This is the first year St. Xavier Saturday Morning Service groups have been joined by a number of young alumni working side by side with our students and parents on various service sites including Finn Meadows Farm, St Vincent de Paul, Matthew 25 Ministries and Over the Rhine Community Housing. (see side bar for entire list) “The Young Alumni Saturday Morning Service chaperone opportunity is a perfect example of alumni who truly want to give back,” states John Schrantz (’96), Director of the Annual Fund and Alumni Relations. “They are able to make a noticeable difference in many ways in just a few hours per month.”

Scheper comments “The impact I make with service through the Young Alumni group is doubled with Saturday Morning Service. There are not a lot of other places where you can give back to the community, give back to your alma mater and connect with current students in a unique way.”

For Scheper, the experience is even more special because he has the opportunity to serve with his brother, current junior Sam Scheper (’15).

“It’s awesome to do service with my brother. He and the other alumni inspire me to do the same thing and give back to the community and St. X after graduation,” beams Sam. The Scheper’s volunteer at Our Harvest Cooperative, a sustainable, organic farm run by St. Xavier alumni Steve Dienger (’04).

“With the help of Saturday Morning Service, we are doing tasks that take a lot of man-power to do,” comments Dienger. “The farm gets the help and then we give a donation of food to St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry in return. The students see what agriculture is and learn about our food system and how they can make a difference.”

Dienger credits his experience at St. X for his desire to follow and pursue his passion in life.

“The St. Xavier atmosphere is one where service is encouraged, but not required. Not only did we receive an education, but we also learned about morality, justice and how to identify injustices in the world and figure out what we can do in small ways to create big change.”

It is in that spirit Dienger is impressed with his dealings in the Saturday Morning Service program.

“I see eager students and alumni who want to complete tasks and help in any way possible,” said Dienger. “They are very interested and want to know how what they are accomplishing is making a difference in the farm’s work.”

St. X Saturday Morning Service Coordinator Linda Gloeckler states, “I have seen what a positive impact our young alumni chaperones have had on our students. Working on projects together, our students not only see the young alum’s commitment to service as a life long response of what it means to be a Man for Others but they look to them as mentors and friends. It has become a living acknowledgement of the Long Blue Line and the difference we can make in our own St. Xavier Community, our city and potentially the world.”

The program, even in its infancy, is growing and encourages more Young Alumni to get involved.

“It’s a pretty limited commitment, but you get a lot of mileage and help a lot of groups and individuals all at the same time,” said Scheper.

“Being a Man for Others doesn’t stop when you graduate—it goes on the rest of your life and this is the perfect opportunity to get involved.”

A community that values growth

Elizabeth Heile has been teaching English at St. X since 2007. Mrs. Heile is the moderator for the Young Writers’ Forum, she serves on the Academic and Kairos Boards, and also serves on the Academic Selection Committee. She is a former St. Xavier Faculty Association secretary, was chosen for the JSEA Seminars in Ignatian Leadership program and serves on the Campus Master Plan Committee. She is married to former Bomber Jeffrey Heile (’96).

Why did you choose to teach at St. Xavier High School?

So many of the smartest and best men I know are St. X grads, including my father (Joseph Boneau ’67), and my husband (Jeffrey Heile ’96). As an undergrad at Xavier University, I felt the impact of Jesuit education firsthand and knew I wanted to teach in an environment that required that same sort of rigor and call to do justice for others. I knew I could expect talented students and faculty here, and that’s certainly been the truth.

As the moderator of the Young Writers Forum and teacher in the classroom, what stands out to you about our students?

Our students love this place, and they make this place better for it. Our students are clever—this great combination of being really smart and really funny at the same time. A sense of humor and a relaxed atmosphere pervades our school, so that even though we are working hard, it’s never drudgery. W. B. Yeats said that “wisdom is a butterfly and not a gloomy bird of prey,” and I think we bear out that idea very well here. I’m also continually impressed by how much our students do, whether it’s writing novels in their spare time or spending hours at practices or rehearsals. They demand a great deal of themselves.

You serve on the Kairos Board, tell our readers about this experience.

I teach freshmen and sophomores, so one of the neatest things about going on Kairos is seeing how my former students have grown up. I am also always reminded that everyone has a story, and we need to take time to listen. Kairos is such a key experience for the seniors because they are poised on the edge of leaving it all behind, and it affords them that pause to look back, look around, and reflect on who they are in this world and who they want to become.

As part of the Academic Selection Committee, what do you look for in a St. Xavier student?

Beyond what is dictated by our rubrics, I like to see an applicant whose grades show growth, whose recommendations indicate integrity and initiative, and whose essay shows originality, depth, and personality.

How would you describe the St. Xavier Advantage?

The St. Xavier Advantage is rooted in community. I’m from Lexington, Kentucky, so as a relative “outsider,” I was struck initially by how Cincinnati is so geographically divided. Yet, I’m so impressed by the way the love for St. X seems to supersede geographic boundaries and unite a diverse student community. I think this stretches our students and creates a community that is really representative of the whole city. Our students come in with many innate gifts and talents, but the community here pushes them to become even better. The advantage lies in a school community that values growth and has high expectations of and high support for its members.

Healy Society growth and impact continue IMPACT! That is the consistent theme that envelopes you when you talk to Healy Society members. Everything that is done at St. Xavier happens to impact and form the lives of the young men that are educated while in the classrooms, clubs and athletic teams of St. X. The Healy Society supports that impact and formation by affecting the entire St. Xavier Community through its outreach and support.

The Healy Society, named after Patrick Francis Healy SJ, the first African American president of a predominately white university, is open to any alum, alumni parent or faculty member who want to help support and promote the multicultural initiatives of St. Xavier High School. Motivated by a portion of the St. Xavier mission “to form leaders,” the group helps St. X promote close relationships and form leaders for every community.

The goal of the society is to help students in their preparation to lead in the 21st century by creating opportunities for students to work comfortably around people who are of different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

“The world is becoming flat and it is very likely that the students graduating today will spend part of their work life outside of the US. It will be very beneficial long term for students to become comfortable interacting with people who have a different perspective and different experiences,” said Rank Dawson (’02). “I think the Healy Society is trying to foster this interaction.”

Keeping alumni engaged at St. X helps build stronger relationships.

“Having our multicultural alumni engaged at St. X benefits the entire community,” boasts John Ravenna (’87), Director of Multicultural Initiatives. “They serve as informal mentors, guest speakers and help to motivate all of the students, but especially the multicultural students, take advantage of this opportunity and get the very most that they can out of their St. X experience.”

Alum Elliot Walker (’04) knows firsthand the impact he is able to make on current students.

“The Healy Society has allowed me to stay involved with St. X and help to impact not only alumni, but current students as well. I think the Healy Society is important to continuing to strive for a multicultural environment and keep multicultural alumni involved in continuing to grow and make St. X an even greater institution.”

The Healy Society’s calendar of events is as diverse as the group offering a variety of ways for all to get involved.

Alumni have the opportunity to participate in the Brother to Brother Speaker Series through Parents Across Cultures, attend Hands Across Campus’ Multicultural Night at the fall and spring plays, as well as the opportunity to be a mentoring resource for Hands Across Campus, and the Retention Programs. The Healy Society is available to support multicultural students and to help all students develop the multicultural competencies to succeed in the ever changing world.

“With an initiative like the Healy Society, it shows the St. X community is comfortable in its own skin and confident in the advantages that diversity offers us,” states David O’Toole (’62).

The impact the society is making on students, parents and alumni is evident. The group is working diligently to raise funds in hopes to join the Loyola Club and raise enough funds to sponsor one full-tuition scholarship to a deserving

multicultural student.

“With opportunities like the Healy Society, students come to St. X as children and teenagers, and leave as men prepared to take on any number of challenges life has to throw at them,” comments Zach El-Sawaf (’03). “Outside of my family, St. X has been the number one biggest influence on my life and helped lead to where I am today.”

JOHN HUSSONG

Thank you for your dedication and passion The 2013-14 school year marks the 50th year that Mr. John Hussong has taught at St. Xavier High School. Over the years, Mr. Hussong has taught many subjects, but is best known for teaching Creative Writing and British Literature. He is also very well known for his work with the Quiz Bowl Team.

For many, Mr. Hussong is known as an icon for St. Xavier High School. Even after 50 years, he is still creative and passionate about teaching, literature, and the beauty of words. He loves working with students, especially those who can craft good sentences and images. Students, faculty and staff alike enjoy engaging Mr. Hussong’s wit and verbal give and take.

During the Mass of the Feast of St. Francis Xavier, Mr. Hussong was honored with a medal commending him for 50 Years of Distinguished Service to St. Xavier High School. He clearly loves St. X and in this issue of St. Xavier Magazine, we encourage friends and former students to take the time to share thoughts and memories about his many years of teaching in appreciation for his service. i had Mr. hussong for creative writing class my junior year. i looked forward to going to his class because he always found a way to make us laugh, enjoy the topics and relate the subject matter no matter the topic that was being covered. i am putting writing concepts i learned from Mr. hussong to work in college. i am so grateful to have had the opportunity to be one of so many who have had Mr. hussong as a teacher.

We were among the first of a large group of lay teachers employed by St. Xavier, and we stayed together through the many ‘ages’ of St. Xavier. our families partied together, our children played together, and our sons attended St. Xavier together. now, in 2014, only one remains as teacher, John. early on Jack and i decided that John was a master teacher and a good friend. now in his 50th year at St. Xavier he is still as master teacher and a good friend.
