THE ST. XAVIER ADVANTAGE What’s so great about St. Xavier High School? Throughout the spring and summer of last year, several groups worked together to answer that question. The Mission Promotion Committee led by Tom Gill, John Bloomstrom and Walter Knox—together with Mimi London, mother of Will ‘10 and Joe ‘12—summarized the many benefits enjoyed by our graduates in one phrase: the St. Xavier Advantage.

We have asked students, parents and volunteer groups to enumerate for us the elements of that “advantage” as they have experienced it. At this year’s Grand Reunion we videotaped alumni answering that question as well. During the admissions season, St. Xavier High School invited potential students to “Get the St. Xavier Advantage!” I thought it would be interesting to share with you some of the advantages of a St. Xavier education, as identified by this broad range of constituents.

It’s Cool to Be Smart. There is an intellectual buzz in the building as fully half of our students scored in the 90th percentile and above on the entrance exam.

Excelling academically is not merely accepted, but truly celebrated among our students. They work hard and take pride in their learning, as they prepare to thrive in college and beyond as life-long learners.

Men for Others. From simple acts like opening doors for each other, to the more than 80% of our students who participate in voluntary community service each year, giving to others is central to our identity as a school. When we asked parents, alumni and students what single phrase best expressed the essence of St Xavier, the vast majority answered, “Men for Others.” Long after they graduate, a great number of our alumni are involved in non-profits as staff members or volunteers.

The Long Blue Line. St Xavier alumni are at the highest levels of business, the professions and public service in Cincinnati and beyond. I just returned from New Orleans where I met with four different alums who serve as CEO of their respective companies. Hiring managers appreciate our graduates for their ethical values and critical thinking skills. And personal bonds of brotherhood are formed among classmates that last throughout life.

Be an Individual, Be Yourself. Anything done in an excellent manner wins the admiration of friends and classmates. Whether he is a football player, a trumpeter or an actor, (or all three) St. Xavier offers each student a wide variety of opportunities to develop his God-given talents and feel accepted and respected for them.

The Examined Life. Monks withdrew from the world to find God in the desert, while Jesuits moved into the big cities to seek God in the busyness of life. Through the examen and other Jesuit prayer techniques, we teach our students to discover God’s presence and action in the midst of their busy lives, to develop a personal friendship with God, as St. Ignatius proposes in his Spiritual Exercises. What better spiritual preparation for the busy lives our students will likely lead in the future, than to develop the ability to live connected to God in this way!

Cura Personalis (Care for the whole person).

Our faculty knows that they don’t teach Spanish or English or Science. They teach our students, each one individually. Stop by the Math office at any hour of the day and you’ll find teachers helping students through some difficulty they are having. Observe a swimming practice and you’ll see coaches teaching life-lessons as each swimmer competes against himself, trying to achieve a personal best. I’ve seen custodians make the difference in a young man’s life when he needed an adult to talk to.

What will we do with this information? Videos of the alumni will be posted online beginning this spring.

We hope to share a different Advantage on our website each week. And we will begin to video our seniors this Spring as they begin their journey beyond the halls of St. Xavier. Let’s all tell the world what makes St. Xavier High School great, sharing with others the particular Advantage we have received.

Growth and change awaits us as we welcome Mr. Terry Tyrrell as our new principal beginning July 1. Terry brings with him all of the skills and experience necessary to write the next chapter of the St. Xavier Advantage. I look forward to sharing with you more about Terry in the summer issue of this magazine.

ST X. Named Endowments Reception Gives Thanks

St. Xavier High School benefactors gathered for an evening of appreciation at the 2012 Named Endowments Reception at the Walter C. Deye SJ Performance Center on Tuesday, October 2, 2012.

The evening began with a reception where current students and benefactors had the opportunity to get to know one another. After the reception, the group gathered for a short program emceed by Fr. Tim Howe SJ.

Something Blue choral ensemble performed the National Anthem and the Chamber Blues string ensemble entertained guests with two pieces. Mr. Brian Shircliff (‘92) religion teacher, student Christopher Merz (‘13) and parent Mrs. Daphne R. Chaney offered presentations to thank the donors who support St. Xavier High School is so many ways.

MULTI-CULTURAL WORLD St. X Makes History and Sweeps the GCL in Fall Sports St. Xavier High School has made history once again. This time by sweeping the GCL South in all four fall sports; Cross Country, Football, Golf and Soccer.

According to GCL South records, St. X is the first school to win the GCL South in all four participating sports. The last team to sweep the fall was the Elder Panthers in 1971 when the only three sports were included (Cross Country, Football and Golf ) before Soccer was an OHSAA/GCL sport.

“I am very proud of each of the young men participating in our fall sports programs,” said John Sullivan, Athletic Director for St. Xavier High School. “Our coaches have done a great job teaching our student athletes that working hard on the little things leads to great success.”

This fall more than 200 St. X students had an in-depth conversation with seven Muslim students and Mrs. Shakila Ahmad, a parent of two alumni. The conversation was connected to student studies of the Middle East.

This informative presentation was a great opportunity for students to learn and understand about those different than themselves. The conversation ranged from religious questions, to politics and even got into dating. The audience was engaged and the students and Mrs. Ahmad were able to share an important part of themselves with the St. X community. This is just one way St. X is helping to prepare students for leadership in a multicultural world.

LONG BLUE LINE AND ADIDAS TEAM UP FOR BREAST CANCER AWARENESS October is officially Breast Cancer Awareness Month and thanks to the efforts of the St. X group Long Blue Line and the donation of Adidas, the St. X Football team was able to bring awareness to the forefront during a varsity football game versus rival St. Ignatius of Cleveland.

The Long Blue Line, St. X football parents, sold t-shirts and 600 pink bandanas to raise money for A Crucial Catch. A Crucial Catch is a nationwide screening reminder campaign to help women stay healthy. Done in collaboration with the American Cancer Society, the initiative promotes breast cancer awareness and encourages women 40 and older get annual mammograms to find breast cancer in the early stages, when it is easiest to treat. The total donation made from the Long Blue Line to the American Cancer Society from the sale of the t-shirts and bandanas is $2,630.20.

During the game, the Bomber football team also showed their support thanks to a generous donation from Adidas. Adidas created bright pink jerseys to show support of breast cancer awareness and donated them to four football teams across the nation. St. X was chosen as one of the teams and proudly wore the jerseys for the game.

Project 2012 Runs “Cross Country” Coach Mike Dehring (‘88) and his Bomber Cross Country team formulated a plan for this year’s Cross Country program— “Project 2012.” This plan led the Bomber Cross Country team to its fourth Ohio state championship. The team finished with 71 points, the second lowest team score in history for St. X at this race.

The Cross Country team continued “Project 2012” placing 3rd overall in the varsity championship race at the Nike Midwest Regional Meet in Terre Haute, IN in November. In the championship race, AMDG harriers placed third overall with 124 points, just behind the second place team by four points. This

success led the team to an at-large bid to run in the Nike National Cross Country Meet in Portland, Oregon on December 1. St. Xavier placed ninth out of 22 teams participating in the Nike National Race.

Throughout the season the varsity team of 16 runners, led by head coach Mike Dehring, was ranked 6th in the country and 1st in the region by Mark Bloom (Harrier) and 16th by milesplit.com.

The team’s success is proof that a plan paired with hard work and dedication reaps huge rewards. Congratulations to the St. X Cross Country Team!

Blood Drive Saves Lives The St. X Blood Drive is an annual tradition.

Each year Bombers take time out of the day to save lives partnering with Hoxworth Blood Center. Thanks to the generosity of many students, faculty and staff the drive collected 70 units of blood. Each unit of blood will save at least three lives.

Mothers’ Club Luncheon Boutique and Fashion Show The Mothers’ Club hosted its annual Luncheon, Boutique and Fashion Show on Friday, November 30, at St.Xavier High School.

Guests enjoyed a performance by Men in Black while shopping at the boutique filled with gorgeous hand-made items from the Mothers’ Club. Shopping was followed by the luncheon and fashion show.

Karl Thomsen emceed the luncheon event which opened with the St. X Drumline and a vocal performance from Something Blue. The Mothers’ Club presented Fr. Tim Howe SJ with a check for $2,500 towards the St. X Canned Food Drive and another check for $25,000 for the President’s Fund.

St. Xavier Mothers’ Club members and supporters modeled fashions and accessories for the crowd followed by a special fashion show from St. X Seniors. Guests were also surprised by the appearance of the four coaches who led St. X to the first GCL Fall Sweep in history and a runway appearance by Fr. Howe SJ. The event concluded with a special dance by the St. X seniors. A big thank you goes out to all who made this event such a huge success!

MASS OF PATRON SAINT The St. Xavier High School community celebrated its patron saint with an all-school Mass on the vigil of the feast of St. Francis Xavier.

Past President Fr. Bill Verbryke SJ (‘71) celebrated the Mass and was quick to point out he is the only graduate to preside over this special Mass the past four years. Fr. Verbryke congratulated students on a successful year so far and offered a homily explaining the two things that connected the scripture and the life of St. Francis Xavier, trust and humility.

NEW SOCCER COACH St. Xavier High School is pleased to announce Brian Schaeper as the new head coach for the Bomber Soccer Team. Schaeper has been coaching in the St. Xavier Soccer program for eight years under former Head Coach Henry Ahrens serving as Assistant Coach and most recently as the JV Head Coach. Schaeper is a Religious Studies teacher at St. Xavier High School and is a graduate of Xavier University where he played soccer. “I am very excited to take on the challenge of leading the St. Xavier soccer program.” said Schaeper. “I think it will be very hard to match the level of dedication Coach Ahrens gave to his players, but I am honored to be entrusted with the soccer program. I am excited to be able provide opportunities for St. Xavier soccer players to discover and develop their own talents, and to ultimately serve the mission of the school in helping young men become leaders and men for others.”

CANNED FOOD DRIVE BREAKS RECORDS

The 2012 Canned Food Drive rewrote the record books this year collecting a grand total of 165,040 pounds of food and items for those in need. St. X helped more than 525 families adopted through more than 25 agencies across Greater Cincinnati. The collection also benefitted three Appalachian communities.

During the drive, The St. Xavier High School National Honor Society collected more than 450 books for children in need. “Books are Good” was the theme for the collection. The books were collected and distributed to families adopted by junior and senior home rooms through the Canned Food Drive. The books added the perfect touch to the delivery food and items to those in need this year through the adopted family program and Canned Food Drive.

Dr. Jamie Laughlin’s homeroom (15B) collected 13,264 pounds, thousands more than any other homeroom at St. Xavier High School. Each student in the homeroom collected more than 250 pounds. Thanks to all who made this year’s Canned Food Drive a huge success helping thousands for the holidays.

CHRISTMAS CONCERTS CELEBRATE SEASON

ST. X BRINGS CHRISTMAS TO WINTON HILLS ACADEMY

The Christmas season was filled with music thanks to the talented musical groups from St. Xavier High School. The season was kicked off by The St. Xavier Christmas Concert at St. Xavier Church in downtown Cincinnati.

Hundreds packed the church to enjoy the holiday-themed music. The evening featured performances by Out of the Blue, St. X’s jazz band, directed

by Dave Thomas, the two St. X string ensembles, Chamber Blues and Men in Black, directed by Isaac Watras and the St. X choirs—Xmen, Rhythm & Blue, and Something Blue directed by Karl Thomsen.

Later in the month many enjoyed a wonderful dinner served

by St. Xavier students and then a performance by the St. Xavier choral groups, Something Blue and Ensemble X at the annual St. Xavier High School Christmas Dinner. The show included beautiful Christmas music, solos and moving monologues delivering the perfect evening to sing in the holidays.

Finally to kick off Christmas break the St. Xavier Choral Groups, Strings Groups and Jazz Band put everyone in the holiday spirit with a fabulous Christmas Concert for the entire school.

Freshman Ignatius House students brought the joy of Christmas to first and second grade students at Winton Hills Academy. Students in this house adopted buddies from the Cincinnati Public School. For months, the buddies acted as pen-pals and the two groups came together for the first time to celebrate Christmas.

“This program is awesome!” said Mrs. O’Nan, second grade teacher at Winton Hills Academy. “We have done this for a few years with St. X students. Our children learn so much from the program. They learn letter writing and they learn about giving.” The two groups spent the Christmas party doing crafts, making graham cracker houses and exchanging presents and books.

Both Winton Hills Academy students and St. X students agreed that being “buddies” was “awesome!” The groups will come together a few more times throughout this school year. The students from Winton Hills will visit St. X for a tour and then the two groups meet up again in the spring for a day at the Cincinnati Zoo. The Adopt-A-Class program is is orchestrated by St. X teachers Mr. Dave Eby, Mr. John Cole (‘85) and Ms. Alison Roberson.

St. Xavier High School Announces New Principal

Mr. Terrence Tyrrell will begin as the new principal for St. Xavier High School on July 1.

President Fr. Timothy Howe SJ is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Terrence H. Tyrrell as Principal of St. Xavier High School.

Mr. Tyrrell comes to St. Xavier High School from Saint Ignatius College Prep in Chicago, IL where he has served as the Assistant Principal for Student Services for the past six years. Prior to his work as Assistant Principal, he served as the Director of Student Activities.

Mr. Tyrrell also has teaching experience in Social Studies at St. Louis University High School, St. John’s College High School in Washington, D.C. and Saint Ignatius, as well as working as a resident school prefect at Georgetown Preparatory School in Bethesda, MD.

Mr. Tyrrell has a B.A. in English and History from Wake Forest University and a M.Ed. in Educational Administration from Loyola University in Chicago.

“Mr. Tyrrell’s passion for Jesuit education and his extensive experience working with teachers in their classrooms will contribute greatly to making the ambitious goals of our strategic plan a reality,” said Fr. Timothy Howe SJ, President.

In regard to this new venture, Mr. Tyrrell said, “I have been blessed throughout my life to have experienced Catholic and Jesuit schools as a student, teacher and administrator. It is this connection with the Catholic faith and Jesuit tradition, and the school’s mission in particular, that has led me to accept the position of Principal at St. Xavier High School. I feel privileged to be able to serve the St. Xavier students and I look forward to meeting and working with the community that supports the task of educating these young men to become Men for Others.”

Current Principal Bill Sandquist welcomed Mr. Tyrrell saying “Terry can count on the professionalism of this faculty and staff to support him in his new position.” Look for more from Mr. Tyrrell as he begins this new position July 1, 2013.

Mothers’ Club Cook Book On Sale Now The long awaited Bomber Soup has simmered and boiled over to become Food for the Journey, a 300-page keepsake book that will satisfy your hunger, move you to tears and fill you with joy as you peruse through page after page of delightful recipes, stunning illustrations and inspiring prayers and stories. Our new title and look better reflect the Ignatian belief that our search for God is a spiritual journey. The book captures many of the highlights and insights into our sons’ journey along this path during their years at St. X. It’s sure to become a treasured keepsake among graduates and veteran St. X moms as well as a valuable guide for those new to the Ignatian traditions of the school.

Books are available for $25 at the St. Xavier Spirit Shop with proceeds benefiting qualified students at St. X through the Mothers’ Club Endowment Fund.

Food for the Journey

Take Home A Piece of St. X History Many Soccer, Football, Lacrosse athletes and Band members played on the turf at St. Xavier Stadium-Ballaban Field between September 19, 2003 and October 26, 2012. After 10 seasons, the field surface is being replaced by the School. The St. X Athletic Boosters have created a fundraiser offering athletes, parents and supporters the opportunity to preserve memories of competition for a lifetime. The Boosters are selling the old turf to raise funds to benefit current and future Bomber athletes. The proceeds will not go towards the new turf.

There are four options available: Turf options include general green or blue turf from the midfield logo. Photo options include a general stadium photo or a personalized photo of your choice.

Orders may be picked up in the AP Office at St. Xavier High School or shipped for an additional $17 each. Personalized orders have a one week fulfillment time and general orders are currently available. Green Turf with a general photo is $100 and with a personalized photo is $125. Blue Turf with a general photo is $150 and with a personalized photo is $175.

Bomber Basketball Visits Washington

Perfect Four

The St. Xavier Varsity Basketball Team enjoyed the sights of Washington, D.C.

The Varsity Basketball team participated in The Father George National Jesuit Christmas Classic hosted by Georgetown Prep High School in Bethesda, Maryland over Christmas break. The team placed second in the tournament losing their first game of the year in overtime versus JSerra Catholic High School. During one game, the team set a school record with 15 successful three point shots in a game and broke a tournament record with 85 points in one game.

The trip was not just about basketball. Bombers had the opportunity to visit and appreciate the historical aspects of Washington, D.C. as well. The team was able to visit the Marine Memorial, Pentagon and the 9/11 Memorial as well as some of the museums of the Smithsonian.

Team members also enjoyed a tour of the Capitol including Statuary Hall, the rotunda, the old Senate chamber, a visit to the House floor, Speaker’s Balcony and a personal tour arranged with Representative Chabot and Speaker Boehner’s offices. Bombers also had the opportunity to enjoy some of the most famous sights in Washington including the Washington Monument, the White House, Lafayette Square, Ford’s Theatre, Union Station and Arlington Cemetery.

Most of the tours and talks were arranged by History teacher and basketball score keeper Ron Weisbrod with help from History teacher, Assistant A.D. and Assistant Coach Joe Molony (‘84). The trip was fun and educational giving the team the chance to experience some of the country’s most important historical landmarks.

Congratulations to the following students who have scored a perfect composite score of 36 on the ACT college entrance exam.

Seniors in the Class of 2013: Alexander Bailey, Jackson Bowers and Kevin Talbot and Junior Eric Stewart (‘14) make up the “perfect group.”

The ACT consists of timed tests in English, mathematics, reading and science. Each test is scored on a scale of 1-36, and a student’s composite score is the average of the four test scores. According to the ACT, the actual number of students earning a composite score of 36 varies from year to year, though roughly only .1 percent earn the top score.

Theatre xavier produces riveting tale

TX presented a winter performance of “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.”

Theatre Xavier was able to produce “A Christmas Carol” during their fall season.

This show was full of ghosts and stories of past, present, and future. It was filled with a riveting tale describing the story of old Ebenezer Scrooge. The Theater Xavier cast swung into action under the direction of Michele Mascari, tackling intense dancing, acting and building the city of London on the theater’s stage. This show was an extraordinarily magical experience. As always, the characters were all extremely unique.

TX’s winter musical brought hysterical “25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” to the Black Box Theatre. Can you spell “h-i-l-a-r-i-o-u-s?” Guests enjoyed entering the world of the comedic tale of overachievers’ angst featuring performers from St. Xavier and surrounding schools.

Stay tuned for Theatre Xavier’s spring musical presenting a world of beauty and peace, struggle and redemption, in the inspirational story of “The Children of Eden.” Double Crossed Forever. Doyle Family Seedling Program Builds Strong Foundation for Catholic Education Denny and Lois Doyle believe that a strong education leads to many positive and wonderful things. Denny, Lois, and their four children, are products of Catholic education. Their three sons (Brian ’89, Mark ’91 and David ’98) attended St. Xavier High School. Daughter Mary Beth graduated from Summit Country Day in 1994.When the family created a Family Foundation in 1991, they soon discovered their true passion was Catholic secondary education.

“I believe dollar for dollar Catholic education offers the greatest return on personal development. Academic excellence grounded in Christian values is an unbeatable combination to develop great people,” said Mr. Doyle.

“While most parents know the value of Catholic education, for an increasing number, it is beyond their reach. Our schools need endowments to remain viable since it is endowment income that makes tuition assistance programs possible,” Doyle stated.

Doyle continued: “We found that many Catholic school graduates with whom we spoke thought starting an endowment was beyond their financial reach. Thus the Doyle Foundation began The Seedling Program. The name speaks to exactly the purpose of the program. The foundation plants seeds (starts endowed scholarships) in the name of other families to create a vehicle to which they can contribute and build out an endowment over time.

Mr. Doyle said, “ For those of us who are able, we need to pay it forward....we stood on the shoulders of others, if others stand on our shoulders they will in turn pay it forward and future generations will benefit and then perpetuate the system.”

One of the first schools to adopt the Seedling Program was St. Xavier High School. To date the foundation has planted 13 seeds at St. X and plans to do more. (see list) To date, the foundation has planted more than 100 seeds at a wide range of Catholic Schools.

“It has been truly amazing to see them grow and generate income used for tuition assistance,” said Doyle. “We intend to plant another 100 seeds over the next 5 years.”

At the end of 2011 Denny and Lois were approached

by St. Xavier High School alum Rev. Thomas Kreidler (‘69), Pastor at Immaculate Heart Mary parish in Anderson Township, about starting a Seedling Program for the parish elementary school.

“When Fr. Tom pointed out to us that the grade school tuition now approached the high school tuition extant when we started with our high school endowments, we saw the need to at least do a pilot with him to test parish receptivity,” said Doyle.

It has always been Fr. Tom’s philosophy that no child be denied a Catholic school education because of lack of financial resources. This can be a challenge because of the economy and pressures on parishes and families.

“Denny and Lois are simply the most generous of persons who care about the Catholic faith and how Catholic education develops the individual. Their program will really benefit those in need and help me to be able to successfully follow through on my goal. Their challenge gift has generated over three-times their gift, and before long it will reach four-fold.

What a blessing!” said Rev. Kreidler.

Under Rev. Kreidler’s leadership, 14 seeds were planted in 2012 and should reach 20 by the middle of 2013. His work has demonstrated the need for more endowments at the grade school level. The Doyle Family Foundation hopes the success of the pilot will convince other primary schools to adopt the program.

“Rev. Tom is emblematic of the St. Xavier ‘Man for Others.’ Not only did he pound the pavement to get the parish families involved, out of his modest salary he was among the first to plant a seed for the parish endowment,” said Doyle. “He is ‘a parish priest that is on fire for Catholic education and his effort and commitment are incredible. He is truly an icon for St. Xavier graduates.”

The Seedling Program through The Dennis M. and Lois A. Family Foundation has truly flourished into many successful things for Catholic education. Time will tell how many influenced by their generosity will plant their own seeds and pay the gift of education forward.

AN APPOINTED TIME FOR EVERYTHING The appointed time for a new principal at St. Xavier High School has arrived. The administration, faculty, and staff, along with students, parents, alumni, and friends of St. Xavier will each have occasion to welcome this new principal, Mr. Terrence Tyrrell, with open arms.

Mr. Tyrrell is no stranger to Jesuit education, having served most recently as an administrator at St. Ignatius High School in Chicago. There will invariably be new initiatives, just as there were with Mike Trainor and Dave Mueller, the two previous principals I have had the privilege of working with during my tenure for the last 32 years. Mr. Tyrrell will find St. Xavier an incredibly fulfilling place to work with the finest faculty/staff in the land. One of the things that has made the school such a successful institution is its ability to draw on all of its community to work together for the good of the students and to help bring about the accomplishment of the mission, that is, to assist young men in their formation as leaders and men for others through rigorous college preparation in the Jesuit tradition. That has been at the heart of all we have ever done.

I am halfway through my appointed time as interim principal at There is an appointed St. Xavier. I have been busy, as you can imagine, but I have also had some time for everything, time to reflect on my 45 years of working in schools. I began my Cincinnati and a time for every affair under the heavens. high school career teaching Religion. Fresh from the study of Theology and anxious to serve the Church, I threw myself into that task at first as an older Ecclesiastes, 3:1 brother figure. Somewhere along the line I morphed into a father figure, and then further on—I cannot remember when—I slid into a grandfather lead role. Each of the periods has had its blessings and its limitations. As a principal during this grandfather period I have had the privilege of directing the work, which entails empowering faculty and staff to utilize their gifts to influence the young men of St. Xavier to grow and become what God intended for them. I have to say I have been awed by the challenge.

The appointed time for seniors to leave St. Xavier is fast approaching. For three and a half years they have been asked repeatedly to become men who are open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving and committed to justice. Their senior year has been filled with meetings with counselors, preparation of college applications, writing college admissions essays, visiting college campuses, and, at the same time, keeping up with their studies, their sports, their service work, their clubs and activities.

The school has created additional opportunities for leadership roles and encouraged seniors to serve as team captains, TX crew leaders, Band and X-men leaders, Blueprint editors, Bomb Squad members, Advent Canned Food Drive Coordinators, to name a few. Our patron, Francis Xavier, was sent to bring God’s love to foreign lands. Later this year, these seniors will be commissioned to take what they have learned here at St. Xavier and spread that to their new worlds.

Our God sometimes has a way of springing things on us without our seeing them coming. My guess is that Mr. Tyrrell had no idea last summer that he would be moving his family to Cincinnati to assume the role of principal at St. Xavier. Trust me, I had no idea at graduation last year that I would be asked to serve as interim principal. And I would venture to say that our seniors, as juniors, did not grasp what senior year would actually entail for them in terms of opportunities and choices. The takeaway from all of this may simply be to keep our eyes and ears open to the opportunities that God sends our way and to discern what appointed time is present in the gift.

Students and Alumni Connect It is a fantastic combination. Three hundred seventeen young men willing to give of their time to help support the mission of St. X plus the generosity and tradition of the Long Blue line of St. Xavier Alumni. For six nights during the last week of October and the first few weeks of November that combination connected 1,517 times to raise nearly $170,000 to benefit students at St. Xavier via the Annual Fund.

It’s the Fall Phonathon that connects current students with past students. The Annual Fund is the backbone of St. Xavier High School’s fundraising efforts and no one can see the results more than our students who are involved in the program. Assistant Vice President for Development Tony Schad (‘81) has been involved with the Phonathon since 2005.

“I think our kids get a lot out of calling our alumni. At first it is difficult to call someone they don’t know and to ask for financial support. Then they get over it when they discover that our alumni really do love this place. Not a night goes by without a student caller relaying a really neat conversation with an alum,” said Schad.

One such conversation happened this year with former Phonathon chairmen Jake Denman (‘05). Our student caller reached Jake in California.

They had a great conversation and after Jake pledged he actually apologized because Phonathon callers had not been able to get a hold of him the past couple of years. It just-so-happens Jake had been serving our country in Afghanistan as a member of the United States Marine Corp during that time. It had a real impact on our student who could not believe he apologized for not being able to be reached in that situation.

The bottom line is there is an incredible energy and synergy when you have more than 300 young men bonding together to help their fellow students and their school.

“We want the experience to be positive,” Schad said. “We make sure that they have a good time and do good work and that only happens when you have great people working with you. We could not do this without the help of our faculty coordinators John Cole (‘85), Jim Telles and Ed Nardini (‘81). Mrs. Cheryl Asper and John Schrantz (‘96) are also integral contributors to making sure things run smoothly. All in all, we have great people working with great kids talking with great alumni.”

Thank you to Cincinnati Bell who generously supplies cell phones so that such a large number of students are able to be involved. Thank you to our wonderful alumni for taking our calls and for the continued support they provide. Thank you to our 317 student volunteers. Without the students and their time and dedication the Annual Fund Phonathon would not be such a success.

It’s not just history to Karl Hauck… its memories that last a lifetime and beyond. Hauck is a retired faculty member and the first official St. Xavier High School “archivist.” His preservation of St. Xavier High School goes well beyond the papers and the trophies. His work is an archive of the history, memories and traditions surrounding the institution as well.

Hauck began his teaching career at Roger Bacon, but during that first year a professor at Xavier University told him about a possible position at St. Xavier High School. He applied and says accepting the position was a major turning point of his life. He started in 1962 and taught at St. Xavier High School until his retirement in 1999. He came to St. Xavier with two other teachers whose careers spanned four decades; Jack Emmett (’53) and John Hussong. “They are two great teachers and the three of us became fast friends,” said Hauck.

Hauck is currently working with Fr. Denny Ahern SJ on creating a compilation of students who fought in the Civil War. Many students at that time fought for either the North or South. Prior to the Civil Ware students traveled from Southern states up the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers to Cincinnati to attend St. Xavier College as boarding students.

In the spring of 1968 The Yardbirds played for the junior/senior prom. Hauck is working with students from that time to gather information about the event and trying to create an article surrounding the event.

auck taught in the Social Studies department and spent most of his career teaching Advanced Placement (AP) History.

“Karl was the quintessential teacher and kids really liked him. He got them interested by his passion for history,” said Julie Conlon, media specialist at St. X. “I still hear from grads who talk about what a positive influence he was on them.”

“What I remember most about Mr. Hauck was how he made us organize our papers using note cards before we could get started with any of the writing. This forced his students to think about how to best to organize their thinking, sorting out the main ideas from the supporting points and identifying gaps in our thinking that required further research. This technique helped make our papers more compelling and persuasive. Whenever I organize a large amount of data into a set of findings and recommendations, I know that I am leveraging the foundational communication skills that Mr. Hauck first instilled in me while at St. X,” said Erik Sandquist (‘91).

Jim Ott, current St. X faculty member, remembers Karl as a man ahead of his time. Ott claims Hauck was not a pushover as a teacher but that he knew his material and the students and colleagues loved him for it. Hauck wanted to try some new approaches to teaching and when he helped to hire Ott, they began the process of inquiry method of teaching where students read documents and issues not focusing on chronological history, but instead focused on thinking

“He was teaching methods and proposing approaches in social studies that are popular in this day and age. Even with the criticism and negativity, he was ahead of time, but his process is now valued because people see the benefits of his methods and know this is the best way to teach.”

Karl states “There were not many days I didn’t look forward to coming to teach. Every day was different. I would close the door and I would learn as much from the young men as they learned from me. My late wife, Trish, a nurse, was very instrumental in whatever success I had.”

Hauck believes the advantage of St. Xavier High School is an academic one. “Students who attended St. Xavier began with a step up on any other students in the city because of the demands of basic skills and I still feel that is the same for students today. There is a certain drive in our students. They fill the needed requirements and because of our rigorous academics and excellent teachers they left, and continue to leave, St. Xavier able to handle issues a step or two above the rest.”

Karl held a variety of positions during his tenure including department head, faculty committees and he was instrumental in the creation of the current faculty association as well as participation in the summer enrichment program. The program was created by Myron Kilgore, Paul Zook (’57) and others. The entire program had the blessing of the Jesuit Community.

“Surround yourself with good people and that was Karl.

He was very creative and very intelligent. We used to do so many creative things,” said Kilgore. “During the summer program once SPRING 2013

we had students do their own report cards, and we had to quit. They were too hard on themselves.”

Hauck “glories in the fact” that he was able to teach and learn from students of all religions and diverse backgrounds stating he learned more from these groups than from any academic exercise.

Current Social Studies Department Chair Steve Bradley said Karl was one of the most respected faculty members.

“I knew after the interview I had with him on a Sunday, down in the cafeteria back in 1985, that the St. X Social Studies Department was the place for me. Karl’s leadership style was unassuming yet always assured and in control. I think almost everyone at St. X in those days had asked Karl for his advice or opinion on something,” said Bradley.

Beyond the classroom, Karl enjoyed the day to day interaction with the faculty. “Our faculty is outstanding. I remember in the early years the departments had one room together including a pool table and dart board. When you’d have time between classes we would do some work and then chat and learn from these outstanding people. We had great camaraderie,” remembers Karl.

But, says Hauck, the students were what made each and every day special. He has kept a log of all the students and grades in each and every one of his classes. If you were in one of his classes, he has since thrown away the grades and just kept the book of names which Karl claims is “quite large.” He is still extremely proud to read something about a former student and hand-write a congratulatory note to those men.

Through the years, Hauck’s love for St. Xavier and his passion for history grew, and he began to combine the two. In 1985, he and five students from the class of 1982 (Bryan Froehle, Will Damico, Joe Moone, Mike O’Neill and Jeff Chung) wrote a book to reflect the 150th anniversary of the school. “The five students were so dedicated spending evenings, weekends and their summer to complete the piece,” said Hauck.

A Century and a Half (The History of St. Xavier High School from 1831-1981) is largely a compiled history of the school but a partially written work as well. And although it was not a best seller, it can be found in the Library of Congress.

“The book was a highlight in my career,” said Hauck. “It was the genesis of the St. Xavier archives.”

A few files from the old school remain; everything else was thrown away. The real St. Xavier Archives are in a landfill in Northern Kentucky. “The current archive room was provided by the efforts of Fr. Walter Deye SJ, a past president of St. X,” stated Karl. “Most of our records are from the post 1960s.”

The working room has helped with many projects and historical articles about St. Xavier High School. Items and information collected through Karl’s efforts were of assistance in helping Fr. Denny Ahern SJ create The Living Walls found at St. Xavier as well as the historical display case.

Karl is retired in name only. He now works in the archives room twice a week while still spending a great deal of time with his family and volunteering for Matthew 25 Ministries.“I see Karl as someone with tremendous energy and enthusiasm for life,” said Ott. Bradley continues “Karl is the quintessential example of Men for Others.”

Hauck just hopes that someone will want to continue to preserve and maintain the history. “My hope is that someone will take the archive project over and get through it. The nearly 200 year history of this amazing place is too valuable to lose,” said Hauck. “St. Xavier is too important to not preserve its history and memories.”

WE ALL ARE DRIVEN BY THE sAME MISSION I just returned from a conference that included 15 other Jesuit high schools from the mid-west region of the country. The focus of the conference was development, communications and alumni relations. What was very clear is that all of us are facing similar challenges. What was also obvious is that we all are driven by the same mission, the academic and spiritual growth of the young men attending our schools.

Our students are excited to become the next generation of the Long Blue Line and they understand the responsibilities that go along with that honor.

It is our role as faculty, staff and administration to do all we can to help the young men at St. Xavier High School become that “man for others”.

Over the years there has been a long line of educators at St. X who have modeled that Ignatian mantra, and with less Jesuits available the lay educators have taken up the charge. Karl Hauck is one of those special teachers who understood, and still understands, that education is both academic and spiritual at St. Xavier High School. He could make his students strive for the magis in the classroom and in their community.

And good educators don’t just affect their students, they also have an effect on the parents. We are blessed to have many parents of alumni who truly remain a part of our community and continue to support the mission of the school. As you read about Lois and Denny Doyle and their work with Fr. Kreidler, think about the many St. X families you know who work hard to continue to improve the lives of people in their community.

While the focus of our conference was to share best practices and look at ways to improve our work, we also made the time share in prayer.

Whether we led the group in an Examen or simply a prayer reflection, the goal was the same. To ask God to be with us every day as we continued his mission for us and to be with the young men and women at our Jesuit high schools as we helped them to “find God in all things.

LIVE THE FOURTH For a group of St. X alums, this statement epitomized a calling to be “Men for Others” and help a fellow classmate in need. This desire to help turned into something larger than any of them could even imagine… The Kairos Foundation.

The Kairos Foundation was founded by members of the Class of 1989, just a few weeks before their 20th High School Reunion. Earlier that summer, after a seemingly routine car accident, one of their classmates suffered two severe strokes, leaving him with extensive brain damage, paralysis through the right side of his body, the loss of his income and a daunting climb back to a normal life at home with his family.

“At the time there was no charitable foundation at St. X to channel financial support for such a situation,” said Drew Overbeck (‘89).

“A group of us wanted to help and worked with the St. X development and alumni team and with class captains and within 2 ½ weeks we raised $26,000 to help.”

“For many of us Kairos was a common bond, a witness for all of us to come together,” remarked Robert F. Sheil (‘89).

Thus, The Kairos Foundation was born: in response to a single, acute crisis, but with the intent, over time, to serve as a resource for other families in our community who face similar hardships. The Kairos Foundation exists to provide financial assistance to alumni, faculty and staff of St. Xavier High School, and their spouses and children, who suffer financial hardship due to prolonged medical disability.

“Many of us hear a need and want to find a way to help,” said David W. Burleigh (‘86), Chairman. “We decided that if we formalize the process, we could be effective in the future to service the need.”

“All of us are involved in other organizations, but we wanted to do something to help fellow alumni, families, faculty, staff, and those that meant so much to us,” said Sheil. “It is a fabulous thing.”

Now the group is a formal philanthropy with board of trustees, officers and an official process. The group includes many members of the Long Blue Line, but a list of others who just want to help.

I have served under six different school presidents and five different principals, and the constant theme is the Ignatian vision of ‘God in all things’. The Jesuit philosophy has always promoted the Magis (quality of being moved internally to give oneself in love to greater service of God). Students here can take pride in their gifts and talents and are applauded for excelling in whatever interests they have—it’s okay to be a good student; to be the best you can be. Students have been encouraged from the first day of study skills class of the summer program prior to their first class as freshman year to the last day of senior year to always do their best.

YOU AND YOUR WIFE CINDY HAVE BEEN INVOLVED WITH X-TRAVAGANZA FOR YEARS. WHY HAS THIS BEEN A CONTINUED PART OF YOUR ST X LIFE?

WHAT HAS BEEN THE MOST REWARDING PART OF BEING HERE AT ST X?

Being part of an educational system that is throughout the country and widely known for excellence is a wonderful feeling. St X is one of the oldest Jesuit high schools, and being a part of this community is a tremendous honor. We at St X should always take pride in our traditions and heritage, which dates back to 1831. I am energized in seeing young freshman enter the school and four years later graduate as fine men. I have witnessed a couple of generations come through the front door. The generation of 40 years ago, have become good citizens and parents, and now their sons have come and graduated. It has always been rewarding to talk with past graduates and hear about their growth and memories from when they walked these halls. Over my time here, I have seen students have multiple opportunities to be involved in a plethora of clubs, sports, activities, and classes.

I believe one of the strong characteristics of a St X grad is his ability to communicate, both in written and verbal format.

When our son, David, was a student here from 1991 to 1995, Cindy was able to serve on the Mothers’ Club Board and as a result was very active on the executive committee of the X-Travganza. She developed a close relationship with the late Margo Lacaputo (the former director of X-Travaganza).

Cindy and I have always felt a need to give and serve. Working with X-Travaganza was a way to do this. We have understood the proceeds of the X-Travaganza go to help students, but more importantly working on the event builds community. X-Travaganza has given us the unique opportunity to meet and work with some outstanding parents and volunteers. It is overwhelming the good spirit of the many people who unselfishly donate their time, energy, and treasures to make the event such a success. We are just two people trying to lend a helping hand among the hundreds who get involved. In 1995 Fr. Bill Verbyke (‘71) honored our family with the Magis award.

At the time Cindy was treasurer of Mothers’ Club, David was president of student council, and I was president of the Faculty Association. We were indeed humbled by this honor.

YOU HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK ALONGSIDE SOME LEGENDARY ST X FACULTY. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORATE MEMORY OF ONE OF THEM?

When I started back in ‘69 there were 19 of us new to the faculty and staff (Fr. Ed Pigott (‘55), Sylvia Betz and Jim Ott are the only other ones still remaining). There have been many outstanding teachers, coaches, students, and administrators I have had

the honor to know and work with. Coaching with Dick Berning for 20 years was a remarkable experience, filled with many great memories. Dick liked to win and was a fierce competitor, but was also gracious in defeat. He was an excellent role model.

Teaching with Fr. Bob Thul, Joe Puthoff (‘64), Lindy Michael and Joan Whitaker in the math department inspired me to do my best. Other excellent teachers that have influenced me are Tom Meyer (‘63) and Karl Hauck because of their dedication and professionalism.

YOU HAVE SEEN ST X FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF A TEACHER, PARENT, PARENT OF ALUM, AND AS A GRANDPARENT. WHAT IS THE ST X ADVANTAGE?

I believe St X instills a sense of self worth to each student. Early in my career the St. X community reflected the turmoil of the late 60s and early 70s. In the ensuing years we made it our mission to instill a spirit of community and mutual respect for each other. The five characteristics of the Gradat-Grad are emphasized and nurtured with each student. Starting with freshman family interviews, junior family conferences, retreat programs, senior exit interviews, the school is constantly challenging each student to evaluate his connection to God and community. The process is not perfect, but I believe its foundation in Ignatian principles will keep our compass needle pointed in the right direction. I always recall words from Jack Emmett saying, “Even Jesus Christ didn’t have a perfect following of his chosen 12. So if we can target 11 out of 12 (92%) as a success rate, I think our Lord would be pleased.” St X grads take great pride in being part of the LONG BLUE LINE. There is a bond of comradarie that lasts long after graduation. Community is the advantage. Go Bombers!

Richard J. Piening

Dick Piening has been teaching mathematics at St. Xavier since 1969.

His current and former students know him to be, business-like dedicated teacher with a sly sense of humor. He has been involved in several other areas of the school community beyond that of classroom teacher of Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Precalculus and Calculus. Piening has coached several sports but most particularly basketball for twenty years with legendary coach Dick Berning. He served as head of the Math Department for seven years, and in 1976 he was first elected to the disciplinary board and has served this advisory board off and on for 22 of the last 36 years. Also in 1976 he was one of the original officers of the St. Xavier Faculty Association and has served in all capacities of this association. In 1996, Piening replaced Tom Meyer (‘63) as summer school director and has held that position for the last 16 years. He and his wife Cindy have been involved with X-Travaganza as workers since its inception in 1973 and have taken on the role of floor managers each year since 1996. Piening, who enjoys a round of golf, has organized the faculty and intramural golf programs since their inception. He and Cindy have 3 children. His son David graduated from St. X in 1995 and their oldest daughter now has a son who is a sophomore Bomber.

RINALDI EMBRACES BOTH ACADEMICS AND ATHLETICS Your brothers Dominic ’08 and Michael ’09 preceded you at St. X. Was there ever any doubt that you would be a Bomber?

You have been very involved with the St. X Hockey program. What has been the highlight of that experience?

While the choice was up to me, and I was offered scholarship money elsewhere, I knew I wanted to come to St. Xavier. I loved the environment whenever I was around school with my brothers, and I was impressed by the academics I experienced while shadowing

The highlight of the hockey experience was when we beat Talawanda in a close game last year, winning the SWOHSHL south for the first time. That being said, we have a great team this year with a lot of young players and we always have a blast. We have the opportunity and ability to have a special postseason again this year.

Tell our readers about your classroom experience at St. Xavier.

I have found the strong “academics” at St. Xavier to be the attitude around the school toward schoolwork. In the classroom, we are pushed very hard, and the teachers move quickly through the material. However, I am always able to get help from teachers when I need it.

What has been your favorite class and why?

I currently have a love-hate relationship with my physics class. It is the hardest class I’ve taken so far, and it requires a lot of work, but I’m always interested in the lessons. It combines math and science, my two favorite subjects.

You have been very involved outside the classroom. Tell us about some of your experiences knowing the next question will be about Hockey.

Your four years as a current student will end in June. As you look back what would you say to a young man wondering if St. X is the right choice for him?

I would say that he should shadow and visit to learn about all St. Xavier has to offer. It is hard to find a school with such a great academic atmosphere matched with an equally strong school spirit and camaraderie. If St. Xavier feels right to him, I believe it is a great opportunity.

Describe the St. X Advantage and what it means to you.

The “St. X Advantage” is the ability at school to try new things, and do whatever it is you have a passion for without judgment. This comes from the large size of the school, which I consider an advantage. I am thankful to be able to have a unique combination of interests without being seen as “weird” for it.

After playing soccer and baseball freshman year, but getting cut from both sophomore year, I involved myself in several different activities. I started peer tutoring at school, and later tutored at Children’s Home High School and Mt. Healthy North Elementary through the service department. I have also been playing both intramural sports and recreational soccer since sophomore year, and participated in math club since freshman year.

GRAND REUNION

Reunions Bring Hundreds Back to Campus The fifth annual Grand Reunion weekend welcomed back the classes of 1967, 1972, 1977, 1982, 1987, 1992, 1997 and 2002. Throughout the weekend, more than 500 members of the Long Blue Line enjoyed a day of golf at Glenview Golf Course and then came together once again in the Berning Gymnasium for an alumni only celebration. Alumni enjoyed tours of the school from the St. Xavier High School Student Development Chairs and caught up with fellow classmates for an evening featuring a “taste of Cincinnati” with food from Skyline, Montgomery Inn and Graeters. Saturday alumni enjoyed the football game, Mass and an evening out in Mt. Adams.

“The Grand Reunion is really one of the most exciting events for the Alumni office,” said John Schrantz (‘96). “We have the honor of welcoming back those alumni who have helped to make St. Xavier High School what it is today.

Seeing father’s, son’s and brothers all celebrating St. X together is special.”

Class of 2007 reunion This winter St. X was also excited to welcome back the class of 2007 for their first reunion. “Gathering a group of guys after five years is always a great time,” said Alumni Director, John Schrantz (‘96). “The energy and enthusiasm surrounding their passion for St. X says a lot about their experience here as students.” More than 100 members of the class of 2007 converged on St. Xavier High School to see changes at the school and catch up with fellow classmates.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

Joe Kernen is currently co-host of CNBC’s Squawk Box. Kernen came to CNBC in the 1991 merger with Financial News Network, having joined FNN after a 10-year career as a stockbroker. Kernen grew up in the Western Hills section of Cincinnati and graduated from St. Xavier High School in 1974. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado and a master’s degree in molecular biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he worked on cancer research. He is married to Penelope and has two children, daughter Blake and son Scott. Kernen authored Your Teacher Said What?!: Defending Our Kids from the Liberal Assault on Capitalism (2011) with his daughter Blake. Kernen still gives back to St. X. This year he is donating a back stage tour of the show for X-Travaganza.

Kernen Built on Strong St. X Education to Lead CNBC’s Squawk Box Joe Kernen (‘74), co-host of CNBC’s “Squawk Box”, is proof of the age old story that following your true passion will reap big rewards. After graduating from St. Xavier High School, Kernen thought he wanted to become a doctor or work in cancer research. His graduate work focused on mouse erythroleukemia cells, and resulted in a series of publications in well-known scientific journals including CELL, Developmental Biology, and Cold Spring Harbor Symposia on Quantitative Biology.

Throughout his time at MIT, Kernen found himself reading the Wall Street Journal during one of the first technology stock bull markets. Kernen used his new-found knowledge, and a small amount of money from his father, to invest in tech companies.

This small investment grew into a complete career shift.

After completing his master’s degree, Kernen tried to become a stockbroker, but couldn’t get hired because he had no experience. Eventually Kernen was given an opportunity at Merrill Lynch, and during his 10 years in the business, he rose to the level of Vice-President at both EF Hutton and Smith Barney.

Eager to get out of the business, Kernen tossed around ideas of becoming a bio-tech patent attorney or analyst and then heard about an opportunity to write for the Financial News Network (on typewriters Joe points out.) With no experience on how to write a news story, he read Writing Broadcast News: Shorter, Sharper, Clearer by Mervin Block. This quick research led to a three week freelance position which turned into a fulltime. In 1990 FNN was acquired by CNBC. His first gig at CNBC had him writing an hourly segment entitled “Winners and Losers.” Kernen moved up quickly in the organization

but wasn’t always comfortable behind the camera.

“At one point I had to read the one minute report once a day on camera,” said Kernen. “I would do the minute and then I would be nervous for 23 hours and 59 minutes until the next report.”

After just months, the show became a big deal in the financial news arena.

“The show started scripted,” said Kernen. “One day, a breaking news story about ATT happened and we had no script. Mark and I just explained what was happening in our own words. That was the beginning of the current format.”

“Squawk Box” became ground-breaking mixing gags and entertainment with hard-hitting business news. In recent months, Kernen has led the show, and its viewers, on a ‘Rise Above’ campaign advocating both sides of politics to meet in the middle to do what is needed to make the country strong.

Self-proclaimed high school rocker/geek, Kernen gives St. Xavier High School credit for his success.

“Being a Bomber was more important in preparing me for life than either my undergraduate or graduate opportunities,” stated Kernen. “I have always said St. X had more to do with giving me a foundation, learning that it was not necessarily about what you learn, but how to learn.”

Department SPOTLIGHT Social Studies Department Vision and Mission The crux of an effective social studies education must focus not only on content, but also on process and context. It is in the process skills and context (themes and concepts) that students are able to take in future knowledge outside of the classroom and most effectively utilize this information to understand complicated Economic, Social, and Political trends that impact their daily lives. The ultimate goal is for students to make well informed and rational judgments about the information/ knowledge based world that they reside and must thrive in. Accordingly there are three basic process skills they will need: 1. the ability to do critical thinking and problem solving 2. the ability to communicate effectively and 3. the ability to collaborate.

The St. Xavier Social Studies Department continues to have passion for the subject, bring history alive and make it relevant, clearly articulate and illuminate difficult and seemingly unconnected ideas. Individual creativity and nuance—the art, in other words, of teaching - is still the bedrock of quality instruction. However, it must be recognized that the delivery of this instruction as well as the focus must be tweaked and adjusted in accordance with the world the students inhabit. We must meet the students where they are, must live the Jesuit credo of being part of the world, not apart from it.
