NATIVE STUDIES UNDERSTANDING THE EXPERIENCES OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLE Native Studies is designed to provide both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students with the opportunity to explore the cultural, historical, and contemporary issues of Indigenous people of North America, with emphasis on Native cultures of Atlantic Canada and the eastern United States.

You will acquire invaluable insight into the relationship of Indigenous individuals and communities and the immigrant societies across Canada.

St. Thomas was the first university in Canada to establish a Chair in Native Studies.

After graduation Your background in Native Studies will prepare you to pursue a career in law, social work, policy and government, education, research and academia, and many other fields of work.

Language courses Language courses are a key offering of the Native Studies Program. Courses in Maliseet and Mi’kmaq include introductory, intermediate, and full-immersion levels to meet you where you are, and take you to new levels of proficiency.
