Working in education—whether it be in the classroom or in another capacity—is a rewarding field.

The need for compassionate, well-trained educators is one that extends around the world. Children, adolescents, and adults from every corner of the globe depend on good teachers who are dedicated to providing enjoyable and effective learning experiences.

Education students concentrate in elementary (K-5), secondary (6-12), or French second language teaching through co-operative learning and teamwork, along with practical teaching techniques. For Elementary section teacher candidates who have at least nine credit hours of STEM courses in their previous degree(s), we offer additional courses in Math and Science and a recognition of a STEM concentration. A high level of interaction with peers, and challenging demands on time, energy, and ability simulate the work expected of public school teachers.

Students quickly develop close relationships with their instructors as professors take an active interest in the professional development of students.

EDUCATION THEORY & PRACTICE Professional courses coupled with extensive classroom experience The St. Thomas School of Education encourages cross-disciplinary approaches to teaching and learning, while emphasizing inclusionary teaching approaches.

The program is 60 credit-hours delivered in 11 months, and offers the same course work and certification as a two-year program. It builds on previous undergraduate degrees in arts, science, commerce, or other comparable programs, as students are expected to have a sufficient background in a subject area to effectively teach content.

ADMISSION TO THE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION To be considered for admission to the Bachelor of Education Program, you must satisfy three minimum requirements:

A four-year (minimum of 120 credit hours) bachelor’s degree from a recognized university, or be a candidate for the degree in the year you wish to begin your Bachelor of Education degree.

Teachables: 30 credit hours in a List A teachable subject area or 24 credit hours in a List A teachable subject area and 18 credit hours in a List A or B teachable subject area. Teachable subject areas can be found at stu.ca/education.

A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.7 or a minimum of 2.7 on your most recent 60 credit hours attempted.

Applicants who do not satisfy minimum requirements are not considered. Applicants will be assessed on the basis of professional suitability and academic preparation.

Supporting documents will be reviewed for evidence of academic strength, teaching-related experience, and qualities likely to contribute to teaching success. Applicants may be interviewed either in person or by telephone.

If you’re currently enrolled in university, please ensure a transcript of mid-year grades reaches the Admission Office
