AQUINAS: GREAT BOOKS WHAT IS AQUINAS: GREAT BOOKS? Aquinas is an opportunity for you to do something different with your first year of university. Typically, first-year students take five courses; in Aquinas, three of your courses are linked together to create an interdisciplinary learning experience unlike any other. You’ll take these three classes with the same group of students. Enrollment in each section is typically under 30, so it’s easy to have discussions and to get to know your classmates. Your professors teach as a team and are often in the room simultaneously.

Students who take Aquinas: Great Books in first year move on to complete any academic major they choose with a solid foundation in multiple fields.

In Aquinas, you will be part of a tight-knit community of scholars. You will get lots of personal attention from your professors, and you will discuss ideas that have shaped human history.

Depending on what section you chose, at the end of your first year, you will receive credits in English, Philosophy, and Political Science or English, Human Rights, and Political Science. After you’ve finished Aquinas, you can major in any number of subjects at STU. Graduates have gone on to careers in law, education, journalism, government, publishing, and theatre.

Aquinas: Great Books and Human Rights

English, Philosophy, Political Science Aquinas: Great Books introduces you to some of the most influential works in the history of Western civilization. You will encounter writers with diverse opinions on subjects like justice, freedom, happiness, love, friendship, politics, and religion.

You will read Greek epics and Renaissance drama, medieval poetry and Enlightenment philosophy. Readings fuel lively conversations and energetic debates. If you’ve always wanted to read Homer and Plato, Aristotle and Dante, if you want to know more about the limits of knowledge, the difference between justice and injustice, and the political power of art, Great Books is a terrific option.

English, Human Rights, Political Science By reading case law, literature, and political philosophy you will examine the foundations of our modern conceptions of freedom and equality. These readings will help contextualize conversation about modern human rights issues such as torture, the right to privacy, and gender equality. You will explore how ancient works inform our modern sense of the relationship between states and citizens and you will learn how the scientific method changed politics forever. With help from John Locke, William Shakespeare, and Mary Shelley, you will learn about human dignity, cultural diversity, and political equality.
