Bella Festa 2022
2
Welcome to Bella Festa 2022 Dear fellow travelers, Here we are, my Catholic friends, in 2022, at our annual fundraiser and evening with friends, “Bella Festa.” I see you. You have been living amid an unprecedented pandemic for two years now. You have been traveling through uncertain times, worried about jobs, our elderly and our children, the shape of our country and the world. Tonight we celebrate! We celebrate by being together, by bidding on auction items and Fund-the-Need as well as buying raffle tickets. Whether you attend Bella Festa in person or virtually at home (enjoying your wine, sweatpants, and slippers), your support creates value for the parish. I see you enjoying authentic international cuisines and sharing them with friends. The pandemic has made traveling—and most everything else—challenging, so discover international culture with us tonight. Follow me to Ireland and the USA in the Mainelli Center, Italy in the Narthex, Mexico and Spain in the hallways and Germany/Austria in the old gym. Watch Irish dancing and listen to Mexican music, Irish singing, Scottish bagpipes, and a German polka band. I see your big heart. In a world full of uncertainty and change, one thing has remained constant - your support. It is the core of our parish, and a reflection of the community’s strength, when people care about others and come together. When we help people in need, we help them come to Christ. To paraphrase St. Augustine, “Charity is a virtue that unites us to God.” Your generosity is an important ingredient in our parish; it helps meet the needs of the church and school, provides excellent education, and keeps tuition affordable for families. More importantly, it sets us up for success down the road. Finally, let me close by thanking you for your support. Whether you are our Pastor, a parish leader, donor, faculty, staff, Bella Festa guest or volunteer, I am truly glad we are on this journey together. Safe travels! I hope you enjoy tonight. May God bless you and our Parish. Peace and Love, Ursula Treinen

Spirit of St. Robert Bellarmine Award MEET THE TREINENS In 1989, Ursula married Mark and left her job as translator for an Austrian manufacturing company to move to Omaha. Mark was a member of St. Robert’s Parish for a few years and in order to meet people, Ursula began volunteering. Little did she know that it would change her world! Without family or friends in America, the European immigrant was welcomed with open arms by the St. Robert’s community and it gave her a much-needed sense of belonging within her new parish family. As she settled in Omaha, St. Robert’s truly became a home. Monsignor Kerwin was pastor when she joined the Board of Education and went on to serve on St. Robert’s Parish Council, Home & School, Athletic Commission, and Development Board. Ursula was also working as the German teacher at Creighton Prep from 2004-2011, mentoring at-risk kids as a Big Sister and joined the Board of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Midlands before volunteering at Methodist Hospital and UNMC. Mark, an Omaha native and executive at Valmont Industries, was active in community causes. He served on the boards of Youth Emergency Services, Catholic Charities of Omaha, Catholic Charities of Omaha Foundation, St. Robert’s Foundation, Marian High School, Roncalli High School, Teens Finding Hope, Lester Electrical, and The Sheltering Tree. Two years into his retirement, Governor Pete Ricketts appointed Mark to the OPPD Board in 2017.

St. Robert Bellarmine
Together, Mark and Ursula chaired several large fundraisers for church and community causes. In 2005, they founded and co-chaired the first “Bella Festa”, a beautiful celebration to raise funds for St. Robert Bellarmine Parish and School and foster a strong sense of community. Ursula continued as Bella Festa Advisor until 2012. Mark and Ursula were happy to work, serve, and help build a stronger community. By doing so, they met many wonderful people and lifelong friends, and most importantly, modeled service and generosity to their six children (all of who attended St. Robert’s, by the way!) and eight grandchildren. Their kids got the message and Mom hopes that they will follow their example wherever they live. After all, volunteering is one of the most uplifting rewards in life. When you help others, you end up helping yourself, too. In 2020, Mark was diagnosed with leukemia, and the community answered with overwhelming love and support in ways both big and small. Along with their extended family, the St. Robert’s community truly carried Mark, Ursula, and their children through the awful journey. “We found the generosity, kindness, and mercy of Jesus in our parish family. It’s that same family that walked with us, with their hearts wide open, when Mark lost his battle to cancer last year,” says Ursula. Ursula continues to volunteer at St. Robert’s and Nebraska Medicine. She is looking forward to help further the mission of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as a local board member.

St. Robert Bellarmine Alumni Award ROSEMARY GAZDA
As a kid, Rosie Gazda wanted to be a nurse when she grew up. But when her sister fell and hit her head, the sight of blood put her on a different career path. She chose teaching and has made a difference in the lives of nearly 5,000 students and their families during the past 38 years. Thirty-four of those years have been right here at St. Robert’s, first teaching Social Studies to 5th and 6th graders, and for the last five years, serving as the Religion teacher for the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. Teaching Religion is Rosie’s true calling. A woman of faith, she’s excited to witness her students grow in knowledge and faith. A dedicated professional, she’s attended several National Catholic Education Association conventions over the years and collaborated with a friend and former St. Robert’s teacher to make a presentation at the 2013 meeting in Houston. Rosie often works six or seven days a week during the school year. She’s committed to her family and friends, and is among the first to say “yes” to a fun time. Rosie enjoys country music and is a big fan of the Huskers and Buffalo Bills football teams. Attending concerts and games are some of her favorite things to do, as is collecting Mickey Mouse souvenirs. Rosie is grateful for the opportunities St. Robert’s gave her to participate in pilgrimages to Medjugorje and the Holy Land, where she stood in the Jordan River and bought wedding wine from Cana later used at her daughter Kelsey’s wedding. A 1971 graduate of St. Robert’s school, Rosie is all about sharing her many talents with the world. If she could add one more talent, she said she’d like to be able to dance. “I have no rhythm,” she said. Maybe not, but Rosie Gazda certainly has the moves that makes her a great friend and a teacher who has influenced so many young lives over her 38 years in teaching.
