Founded in 1943 by the United States Council of Catholic Bishops, originally to aid the refugees of was-torn Europe, it has evolved and grown into a world-wide agency. It now provides assistance to 130 million people in more than 90 countries and territories in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East and Eastern Europe. Assistance is based solely on need, not race, creed or nationality. CRS programming includes emergency relief in the wake of disasters and civil conflict, long-term development programming in the areas of agriculture, water, community health, education, health, HIV/ AIDS, micro finance and peace building. All Churches in the Archdiocese received a special memo from the Archdiocesan office of the Clergy which stated (in part), the following: “In response to the major storms and severe flooding that have hit the South and Midwest regions of our country, and hearing that similar storm patterns mighty well continue in these and other parts of the country, the USCCB (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) has asked that we take up a collection to help address humanitarian and Church needs caused by the severe weather. It is suggested that this Storm Relief Collection be taken up the weekend of January 30/31. Donations will be forward to Catholic Charities USA.� The memo further noted this special collection is not to be confused with the collection taken this weekend for Catholic Relief Services. These two collections are for two different organizations which address different groups. Catholic Relief Services focuses on foreign needs; Catholic Charities USA addresses needs in this country. Thank you for responding to this need.

Sunday Scripture Reflections Reading 1 Nehemiah 8:2-4a, 5-6, 8-10 Today's reading presents an interesting picture of the priest Ezra standing above the people to deliver his interpretation of the law of God. His reading goes on for hours and saddens the people as they consider how much they need to reform their lives. Perhaps their weeping finally convinces Ezra to "take it easy on them." He and Nehemiah, the governor of Judah, then encourage the people to celebrate their observance of the law. The people, they say, should have a great feast because "rejoicing in the Lord" will be their source of strength. Reading 2 1 Corinthians 12:12-30 or 12:12-14, 27 Human beings have a desire to belong—to another person, to a community, or to God. We can imagine how the Christians at Corinth welcomed Paul's letter assuring them that they were all "one body." They were not to create divisions among themselves by identifying as Jews or Greeks, slaves or free people, women or men. Because they had all been anointed by the Holy Spirit, they had become together the one body of Christ. Each was a member; no one was left out. Gospel Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21 Just as Ezra, in our first reading, read to the people from Scripture, Jesus reads from the book of the prophet Isaiah about the Servant of the Lord.
