Thursday December 8 Feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary In 1854, Pius IX solemnly proclaimed: “The most Blessed Virgin Mary, in the first instant of her conception, by a singular grace and privilege granted by almighty God, in view of the merits of Jesus Christ, the savior of the human race, was preserved free from all stain of original sin.” “Adorned from the first instant of her conception with splendors of an entirely unique holiness, the Virgin of Nazareth is, on God’s command, greeted by an angel messenger as ‘full of grace’. To the heavenly messenger she replies: ‘Behold the handmaid of the Lord, be it done to me according to thy word'. Today we celebrate this solemnity on December 8th and it is a Holy Day of Obligation
Friday December 9 Feast jof St. Juan Diego In the year 1531, Our Lady appeared four times to a native convert, Juan Diego at Tepeyac, near Mexico City. The Lady told Juan she was Mary, the mother of Jesus, and he was to go to the Bishop and ask that a temple be built to honor her on the site where they were standing. The church would be for his people. Juan did as the Lady asked but the Bishop wanted a sign as proof that Juan’s story was true. For the sign, Mary told Juan Diego to go to the top of the mountain and pick some flowers. He went up to the hill, which was dry and barren and found roses like those grown in Castille, but foreign to Mexico. He gathered them in his tilma, a garment like a poncho, and brought them to Mary who arranged them and said to take them to the bishop. Juan Diego did so and when he opened his tilma to present the roses, the bishop saw not only the beautiful flowers but also the beautiful image of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The bishop asked forgiveness for doubting, took the tilma and laid it at the altar in his chapel. By Christmas of that year, an adobe structure was built atop Tepeyac Hill in honor of our Blessed Mother, Our Lady of Guadalupe. Known for his holiness, Juan Diego devoted himself, tradition says, to the pilgrims who came to see the miraculous image of Mary imprinted on his cloak. Pope John Paul II canonized him July 31, 2002.
Second Sunday of Advent The second candle is lit …… The second candle is called the “Bethlehem Candle” or the Candle of Preparation and symbolizes FAITH. God kept his promise of a Savior who would be born in Bethlehem. Preparation means to “get ready”. Help us to be ready to welcome YOU, O GOD ! As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the Prophet: “A voice of one calling in the desert, Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. Every valley shall be filled in, every mountain and hill made low. The crooked roads shall become straight, the rough ways smooth. Today’s prophecy from Isaiah dates from a period when Judah repeatedly turned to various foreign nations for protection from war and invasion. There is widespread social injustice in the land. and the people no longer fulfill their responsibilities in the covenant made on Mt. Sinai. Although Isaiah confronts Judah with this reality, he also expresses hope for a renewed future. He envisions the coming of a righteous king descended from Jesse's son, David, who will fulfill his proper role in leading the people back to faithfulness to God and who will establish a future kingdom of peace, justice, and right relationships in all creation.
