THE PHILLY BLOCK PROJECT You may recall that this group asked for your photos not too long ago for an exhibit to celebrate the neighborhood. Their aim is to form a relationship between the Philadelphia Photo Arts Center (PPAC) and its neighbors . As part of their program they are collaborating with South Kensington artists to offer a series of free art-making workshops to take place on the first Saturday of the month from 10 am to 1pm. The next workshop is scheduled for Saturday, June 4th It will take place on—the “ Grassy Lot” at the corner of N. Mascher Street & W. Colona Street. The workshop will be on: “Cement Planters and Block Decorations”. Under the guidance of Iris & Julio Rodriguez you will learn how to make a cement street planter that you can take home to your block. You can register as a team of people (i.e. residents of a specific house) or as an individual. The workshop is for ages 13 or older. THE FEAST OF CORPUS CHRISTI Today we celebrate the Feast of Corpus Chrisiti; also called The Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. This festive celebration of the Church calendar dates to the early 1200’s when a nun named Juliana had a vision of the Church under the appearance of a full moon. The full moon appeared to contain a single small black spot with no light or brightness coming from it. Now Juliana had loved the gift of the Eucharist from early childhood and she believed this vision was God telling her that the Church was missing a feast in honor of the Eucharist. The black spot represented something the Church was lacking, something the Church had forgotten. And so Juliana began to petition the hierarchs for a day completely in honor of Holy Communion. Although it took several years and varied attempts, and the help of friends and followers, the feast was eventually added to the Latin Christian calendar. The feast was placed following Trinity Sunday shortly after the Paschal season comes to an end.; a time when people tend to drift away from services and settle back into normal life. The Church, however, calls us back to remember that God has gone no where, God is continually being revealed in our thoughts, prayers and experiences and today we celebrate the God who gives us heavenly food and drink.
Juliana was not special because she had a vision, she was not special because she added a feast to the Church calendar. She was special because she took time to notice God and wanted to help others do the same. She did not seek to propagate doctrines nor to try and define the Eucharist. She simply sought a day of reminder for the Church. A day where everyone would stop and turn towards the holy table, the altar and be reminded of the words of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew, “Lo , I am with you always even unto the end of the age.” Celebrate the Body and Blood of Christ this day made present before you on the altar. Celebrate that God is truly amongst us, in the breath and movement of every human being we pass in this lifetime; in your neighbor and in the stranger outside on the street. Celebrate this truth: Seek the Lord & He shall be found. God is near, God is here with us! 214-3

The scene in our Old Testament reading is the city of Salem, which would later become Jerusalem.

The king of that city, Melchizedek, was also a priest. He came out to give Abram, whom God later called Abraham, a blessing, and to share bread and wine with him. Melchizedek's blessing celebrated how God had protected Abram, the father of the Israelites, in a battle.

Today, on the feast of the Body and Blood of Christ, we listen to Paul's account of the Last Supper.

Jesus takes the bread, gives thanks, breaks it, and says, "This is my body." He repeats the same actions with a cup of wine, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood."

In the same way, the celebrant repeats the words and actions of Jesus in the Eucharistic prayer at each Mass. When we gather together for Mass, we share the Body and Blood of Christ, just as Jesus invited us to do at the Last Supper.

Have you noticed how all the readings today speak of feeding people?

Our gospel story shows us Jesus and the Twelve surrounded by a huge, hungry crowd. When the Twelve protest that they cannot feed everyone, Jesus has them divide the crowd into smaller groups.

Then He takes what they have—five loaves, two fishes—gives thanks (blesses the food),breaks it, and invites the disciples to pass it around and share it. There is more than enough for everyone!

We can, of course, see this story as a sign of the Eucharist, in which Jesus continues to feed the multitude of his followers. But we can also see it as a challenge to do what we can to feed the millions of hungry people in our world today.
