Fifth Sunday of Easter

SAINT MARK—FEAST DAY APRIL 25th St Mark was an evangelist, or Gospel writer. In fact, he was the pioneer in Gospel writing. His is the shortest and the oldest of the Gospels. The second Gospel was written by St. Mark, who, in the New Testament, is sometimes called John Mark. He wrote the Gospel in Rome sometime before the year 60 A.D. He wrote it in Greek for the Gentile converts to Christianity.

ST. CATHERINE OF SIENA FEAST DAY—APRIL 29th St. Catherine of Siena was born in Siena, Italy on March 25, 1347. At the age of 16, Catherine’s parents proposed that her sister’s widower husband marry Catherine as a replacement for her deceased sister but Catherine opposed this.

She began fasting and this plus her devotion to her family convinced her parents to relent and Tradition tells us that St. Mark was requested by the allow her to live as she pleased which she did , Romans to set down the teachings of St. Peter. He is honored by that republic with extraordinary very active; dictating letters to scribes; calling for devotion as principal patron of Venice even to this day. Mark’s Gospel was a great contribution to the Church . It included oral and written tradition concerning the words and deeds of Jesus. He shows Jesus as the suffering Son of God. Mark knew that to accept the Risen Jesus meant to come to terms with the cross. Jesus was glorified because he willingly allowed himself to suffer death for our salvation. Mark writes that anyone who wishes to follow Jesus must accept the cross.

Mark wrote to proclaim the Good News to a community of both Jewish and Gentile Christians. His Gospel is direct and simple to read. He speaks to Christians about Jesus, who understands their difficulties and sufferings and will one day bring them to share with him eternal joy and glory.

reform of the Church; was instrumental in restoring the Papacy to Rome and in brokering peace deals during a time of factional conflict and war between the Italian city states. She also established , in 1377, a monastery for women outside of Siena. St. Catherine is credited with composing over 400 letters, her Dialogue, which is her definitive work, and her prayers. These works are so influential that in October, 1970 St. Catherine was declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Paul VI. She was also named one of the 2 Patron Saints of Italy and one of the 6 Patron Saints of Europe. St. Catherine of Siena, mystic & virgin, died on April 29, 1380 and remains one of the most popular and influential saints in the Church today. 214-3

Segunda lectura Apocalipsis 21:1-5

If today's reading from Revelation sounds like a dream, that may be because it symbolically represents a dream most human beings share.

Si la lectura de hoy del Apocalipsis parece un sueño, es porque simbólicamente representa un sueño compartido por muchos humanos.

That dream looks forward to a final union with God and the end of every suffering people have ever endured--no more starving children; no young people ruined by drugs or alcohol; no divided families or abusive parents; no broken hearts or cries in the night.

Ese sueño mira hacia la unión final con Dios y el fin de todo sufrimiento, no más niños desnutridos, no más jóvenes arruinados por las drogas y el alcohol; no más familias divididas o padres abusivos; no más corazones rotos o llanto en las noches.

Gospel John 13:31-33a, 34-35 Jesus is saying farewell to his friends at the Last Supper. He tells them that he will soon be "glorified." They still do not really get the message about his death and resurrection. They love him too much to face the reality of his crucifixion. So Jesus gathers them close and says, "My children, I will be with you only a little while longer."

He tells them how they are to keep his presence alive within them after he is physically absent. "Love one another," he says.
